    So beautiful any doo wop group that came in the 50s or 60s, is at least still capable of having that good old voice of singing. this is my favorite 70s live video of a doo wop song and how they sure dressed that era.

    Wrong about Ben not singing Save The Last Dance With the Drifters. He sang with the Charlie Thomas line up in America, also joined up with Bill in an unofficial Drifter line-up who I saw at Blazers in Winsor. Also joined up with Johnny Moore for a while until the Treadwell organization took them to court to prevent them using the Drifters Name. Apparently they had no right to use it!!!!!! Now to rub it in the Treadwell organization have sacked the present line up and there are no official Drifters out there at the moment. The last line-up with lead singer Michael Williams are now appearing in the Stand By Me Musical Revue ironically playing the Drifters

Aloud me to attend Johnny's funeral whish was a great privilidge. Cannot even enjoy them live anymore, no more official Drifters as the Treadwells sacked the last lot. They are now appearing in the music revue Stand By Me ironically playing the Drifters!!!!

    The Drifters, like many groups over the years, changed personnel more often than a hippie changed their underwear. They (and we, the listening public) were blessed with several great lead singers like Clyde, Ben E, Johnny, Rudy, plus all the other guys. Frankly, Bill Fredericks does a great job on this, vocally and also with charm and personality. Thanks for posting this.

      +Carolyn Gibbs Yes they are. See my post above. One of those guys is Johnny Moore. The lead singer there is Bill Fredericks who joined Charlie Thomas and Johnny Moore in the Drifters in 1966.
      The original lead singer of this song, Ben E. King, left the Drifters in mid- 1960 BEFORE 'Save the Last Dance for Me' was even released. No one ever got to see him sing it live with the Drifters, it's always been sung live by someone else.

      +Michael Schauer
      Yes, they are. They're the "Treadwell Drifters". George and Faye Treadwell owned the name (after Clyde McPhatter sold his share in the group in 1955) and over the years they hired Bill Pinkney, Johnny Moore, Bobby Hendricks, Ben E King, Charlie Thomas, Johnny Lee Williams, Rudy Lewis, Johnny Moore again, and Bill Fredericks as lead singers, along with numerous 'back-line' singers. And that's Johnny Moore second from the right -- he sang lead for the Drifters 1955-1957, then was drafted, but rejoined in 1963 and as you see was still there in 1974. The lead singer here is Bill Fredericks who joined Johnny Moore and Charlie Thomas in the Drifters at the beginning of 1967. The other two are Butch Leake who joined in mid-1970, and Grant Kitchings who joined in May 1971, both while the Drifters were still signed to Atlantic Records.
      You're looking for Ben E. King? he stopped performing with them around June 1959 and stopped recording with them after May 1960. Rudy Lewis? he died of a heroin overdose in May 1964. Charlie Thomas? he walked out in August 1967.

    • @billlloyd4029
      @billlloyd4029 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +carnack53 Slight correction to my post -- Bill Fredericks joined Charlie and Johnny in the Drifters in late 1966 not early 1967.

    • @michaelschauer1291
      @michaelschauer1291 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +carnack53 Johnny Moore would of course have to be considered a "real" Drifter (with both the first and second recording groups writ large) and he is here, so that's something. But he was not on the "Save The Last Dance" recording. Otherwise, Treadwell owned the name and rights but trotted out various generations of non-recording (on the hits) Drifters. Moore went on to lead various UK aggregations which scored big over there but failed to click stateside.

    • @billlloyd4029
      @billlloyd4029 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Michael Schauer
      "Treadwell owned the name and rights but trotted out various generations of non-recording... Drifters."
      If you're talking about the Atlantic years (1953-1972) virtually every member of every line-up (with the exception of a few short-term replacements who were in the group for only a few months, such as Constantine van Dyke, Eddie Bowen or Charles Baskerville) appeared on Drifters recordings.
      As to singing lead on Save the Last Dance for Me, Benny (the original) left the group in stages in 1959-60 -- stop performing live with them after June 1959, and stopped recording with them after May 1960 -- were they supposed to never perform that song again because he was gone? Of the five singers who sang on the original three were gone by the beginning of 1961.
      Bill Fredericks, who sings it here, joined the group in 1966 when it was still led by both Charlie Thomas and Johnny Moore, and probably took over this song in 1967 after Charlie left. The Drifters released 5 singles on Atlantic 1967-1971 including 1 a-side and 3 b-sides featuring lead vocals by Fredericks. Fredericks was a 'real' Drifter and this group led by Moore and Fredericks are the 'real' Drifters.
      Although four of the Five Crowns were hired as replacement Drifters in June 1958 they spent the first 9 months of their tenure touring as a 'fake' Drifters, performing songs made popular by Clyde McPhatter, Bill Pinkney,Johnny Moore and Bobby Hendricks; and at that time Charlie not Benny was their primary lead singer. It wasn't until the March 1959 recording session that yielded There Goes My Baby that the producers pushed Benny forward as the primary lead, and then the record was not issued until May. So the fabled "Ben E. King and the Drifters" existed for no more than a year or two -- May 1959 (There Goes released) to May 1960 (the last King-led session) or maximally March 1959 (There Goes recorded) to Dec 1960 (I Count the Tears released, the last King-led single).

      Thanks for all the "inside" info. Somehow, I still can't see my way to considering Bill Fredericks to be a "real" Drifter, notwithstanding the fact that in all likelihood I saw him perform live one or more times, as he only recorded with them after their salad days in the states. That said, I do see your point. As for Charles Baskerville, who had a terrific voice, he was more famously with The Videos and The Limelites. Grant Kitchings also did time with The Ravens and Ink Spots, among others.
