Michael Ostrog - Jack The Ripper Suspect

  • In 1894, Melville Macnaghten compiled a list of three suspects who the police may have considered as viable suspects for the mantle of Jack the Ripper.
One of those suspects was Michael Ostrog of whom Macnaghten wrote that he was:- " "...a Russian doctor, and a convict who was subsequently detained in a lunatic asylum as a homicidal maniac. This man's antecedents were of the worst possible type, and his whereabouts at the time of the murders could never be ascertained."
    But, who was Michael Ostrog?
In 2019, Richard Jones gave a talk to the East End conference in which he charted Ostrog's criminal career whilst, at the same time, weighing up his viability as a suspect.
This video features that talk along with accompanying images that help tell the story of a suspect who, according to one newspaper, was "a fashionable rogue."

To be honest, I am inclined to believe that none of the known suspects has a strong enough case against them. If I was asked to choose I would have to say either Cutbush or Kosminski.

From watching mainly yours, and a few other videos, this is why I'm 'nearly' sold on Kosminski.
      - barbers had surgical experience
      - jewish writing on wall
      - identified by eyewitness (Schwarz) but as fellow jew failed to testify
      - rough (but inaccurate) dna match from shawl
      - killings stopped after asylum lock up
      - identified as foriegn (jewish) appearence
However, I thought he was meant to be more 'scruffy looking' than the 'well-dressed man' witnesses say. So this brings me to question slightly. Though, if there is evidence of him being 'well-dressed', I'd love to know because it'd confirm my suspicions even more.

@@ThRealOJT Kozminski can't be Jack The Ripper he lived longer than the Kozminski that was named Aaron Kozminski died 1921 the Kozminski that was named as the most likely suspect died in 1889, Ostrog is a fair stab in the dark but as Richard has stated he has a good idea that he isn't JTR...
I always believed that JTR was cunning never forced the victims to follow him and that sadly the prostitutes led themselves into dark places where they wouldn't get caught, Charles Allen Lechmere aka Charles Allen Cross is JTR so many coincidences of living working and walking too and from work in the early hours in Whitechapel he walked past at least 6-8 crime scenes maybe and possibly more but also was born near the double event as his mother lived not far from where the Jewish note was found by police.. Lechmere worked for Pickfords had his own horse and cart carrying caresses of meats from Cows to Pigs meaning he already had blood on his clothing and would easily get away with it and fit into any normal life,
My Opinion is Charles Allen Lechmere aka Charles Allen Cross is Jack The Ripper

Any proof lechmere was violent? No
Any proof he was ever in trouble with the police? No
Any proof lechemre had any mental health issues? No
Any proof lechmere was an expert in human organ removal an could perform such skill in the dark under 14 minutes like what happened with Catherine eddowes?
He isn’t a bad suspect he is suspicious but Jacob levy or kosminski even Francis Thompson are better suspects

Most of the Leather Apron murder suspects are Jews or were eventually committed to an asylum or jail, or both. My observation is this...using current subjects like: Bundy, Ed Gein, Gary Ridgway, Dennis Ryder, John Gacy, etc. None of these guys were asylum material. That is to say none of them would have been considered insane by social standards so why do we use that as a criteria when assessing the identity of the killer. So many of the official suspects died or spent a significant amount of time in mental institutions. Many investigators see that as evidence of guilt. I believe the "Criminal Profile" that produced a belief that the suspect was linked to an asylum was well founded but incorrect.

Are there any virulent swindlers known to also be mad killers? I'm not being rhetorical, I really don't know, but it does seem counter-intuitive.
If the most violence you can find is pulling a weapon when cornered, the pool of suspects would grow a great deal.
