This has been the video that has included actual helpful detailed information presented in an organized manner. Was about to sell or burn my brand new dyneema trailstar. Thank you.

Another good video. Have you considered turning the outside pole upside down and using a karabiner clip over the tip of the pole?

Excellent idea, friend. I'll definitely play around with it a bit, as it would be nice to take that extra step out of the setup.

Why wouldn't you just turn the front pole tip up?

Did you have any problem with site selection on the AT due to the larger footprint of the trailstar? I hike w/ a medium size dog and i'm in between the cricket & trailstar. I like the idea of extra space but was wondering if it was a hinderance at all as far as find a site.

Remember you can actually pitch the trailstar over a boulder or other obstacle and still have much of the tarp for yourself. Remember about abrasion though...the tent material should not touch anything, especially if DCF.

Great video. You mentioned that you used the silnylon trail star on the AT. Which do you prefer?

I know no one who prefers the silnylon to the CF version....especially if there is rain a'comin'. I know plenty who want to switch up tho...EDIT: I have since encountered three hikers who do prefer the sylnylon version. I am unsure which to buy...I will just pull the trigger on one or the other...

Did you use a bivy as well?

so if if you dropped the main pole by 5-10cm, the sides would be touching the ground?

    • @bwb03

Yes, but my current trekking pole is a Leki Micro Vario Carbon and won't allow for that range of adjustment. Besides, bringing the shelter all the way to the ground reduces ventilation and thus, greatly increases condensation.

Good video, ive been looking at the mld patrol tarp, watching as much video on tarp set-ups as I have no experience using a tarp. You used it on the AT, did you have any trouble finding campsites due to the large footprint of the trailstar?

Could you improvise and use this as a hammock tarp as well?

    • @geraldhenrickson7472

That the beauty of backpacking and hiking in general...you can macguyver just about anything. I have seen a hammock or two under a trailstar. It can work not s well as a dedicated hammock tarp..
