- On this one I headed up to the Southern Uplands , this time west of the M74 . Really it was just an excuse to try out my new shelter the MLD Solomid XL in DCF, I love my Duomid but have always fancied a DCF shelter.
It was also back to the cold again , I am really looking forward to some warmer weather now though.

Great looking tent, nice video. Thank you for sharing. Wishing you a wonderful day. Take care.
Thankyou for passing by atb Dave
Thank you for sharing your adventure! Beautiful sunset. Cheers!
Thanks for watching atb Dave ⛺️👍
@@BorderRambler You're very welcome, my friend!
Tent looks good. You did well getting sun at all the way it’s been bloody rain though it wasn’t guna stop. Hopefully now it’s on the turn looking forward to warmer drier camping.
Thanks mate , yeah March has been proper poor weather wise . Hopefully it will start improving soon . TFW atb Dave
Another very nice video. I can see why you choose these areas, complete solitude - not another soul anywhere. You had some gorgeous light as well. Keep 'em coming.
Thanks Mal , yeah it’s real quiet in this neck of the woods . Light played ball for once . Atb Dave ⛺️👍
Looks a really nice tent and look forward to see how you get on with it. Just gone back to a Dcf Duomid myself.
Thanks Ray , it’s not that much smaller than the duomid . Happy so far , just struggling to get out with crap weather and work in the way . Is the Duomid a keeper then ? And what inner have you got for yours now , did you sell your lanshan 1 inner with your old Duomid ?
I can see why you like to camp in these your favourite areas, I’m already dreading Easter in the Lakes !
Yeah I seem to be drawn to the quieter places to camp , it’s the roads and traffic I dread in the Lakes . I have a few 2 night trips up this way when the weather improves . ⛺️👍 atb Dave
Class sunset marra 😀
Cheers mate it’s was a good one 🌅 ⛺️👍
Nice one Dave a DCF tent no excuse now not to do some proper long distance! 😉😁
Ok I will do 2 nights 😂⛺️👍
Another superb pitch Dave - you do find em. Liking the solo mid there - plenty of tie outs I notice. The Six Moons could do with that. Good going mate. All the best out there. Mark
Many thanks Mark , yeah it’s basically a souped up duomid in DCF , yeah a few extra tie outs would make a massive difference . Hope your well atb Dave ⛺️👍
@@BorderRambler A pleasure Dave. A decent souped up one there. I've been working on a hack for the Six Moons guy outs. Sussed it I think. Peace.
Another canny camp Dave. Loved the DCF duomid I had and regret letting it go! lets hope we start to get some warmer weather...cheers ATB Steven
Thanks Steven , it’s the never ending search for the perfect tent lol . atb Dave
That was a lovely location and camp Dave 🙋♂️👍🏽
Cheers Gary , always good to be out in the hills ⛺️👍
Hi and a great camp, like the tent I have often looked at them, but I think you need to see these things prior to purchasing, especially from afar, watching this, loving the rolling hills, as I am on a forced one month lay off due to a health issue, which ends in two weeks so need the videos to keep the spirits up
Keep em coming
Cheers
Thanks , I already own another tent from this company and it’s been very good so far . Nothing worse than being laid up , hope you are up and in the hills soon . Atb Dave
Just searching on google for a solo mid and who should pop up ! Thanks , that looks great, reckon I could still go for the standard size tho, that still looks very generous! A
The XL is slightly smaller than the Duomid, the standard will still be roomy tho ⛺️👍
Beautiful location to test the new tent Dave.Yeah, roll on those warmer, dryer days! Lol! 👍👍
Thanks Anthony , you know me and the quieter areas to camp , we need some sunshine soon 😎⛺️👍 atb Dave
Cracking camp Dave, good to see you back out. I was out Sunday night too on a spot above the beef tub.
Thanks mate , I nearly headed your way but carried on up the M74 . ⛺️👍
@@BorderRambler I’m putting my one out next week so you can compare sunsets but it was a bitter night and morning. Don’t think I’ve stripped camped as quick
Nice to see a camp in wide open hills with decent daylight. Feels like spring is here watching your video- although I bet it was a bit nippy! Really nice looking tent, ATB 👍
Thanks Graham, it’s been a long time coming but enjoyed a nice bit of sun . And yeah it was still a cold wind . TFW atb Dave ⛺️👍
Nice new tent Dave and not a bad camp either mate . I actually bought a Doumid in Silnylon a few months back but I’ve still to get it out , hopefully next week sometime… cheers Stevie
Thanks Stevie , hopefully you get a trip using the duomid soon , hope you get your trip in the hills next week ⛺️👍 atb Dave
I'm liking the new tent Dave 👍 that sunset from your elevated position was beautiful. Good test of the tent 👍
Cheers Lee it was just good to be back out in the hills atb Dave
Nice one Dave, looked great weather compared to what we’ve been having so picked a good day out there mate, cracking scenery, well jel😁, looks a great lightweight shelter, bit of a Tardis with the room inside👍🏻
Cheers Ian , I dropped really lucky with the weather on my days off . Shelter weighs 396g lol without the inner .
Looks a good new shelter mate , plenty of room for gear and stuff, weather looked decent, it's been non stop rain lately, all the best 👍 🏕
Thanks Gaz , pleased with the new tent and yeah it was a rare few days of decent weather .😎⛺️👍
Excellent Dave. The tent looks fab. I've been looking to upgrade my Notch to the dcf version too so I'll be interested to see how you get on with it. Looks an interesting sort of place Durisdeer. ATB, Chris
Thanks Chris , it’s a lovely quiet area with lots of history . It’s my first foray into a dcf tent ,and so far very pleased . ⛺️👍
Always enjoy your videos.. beautifully filmed... it's amazing what a difference the sun makes.
Dumfries and Galloway is nice though we always struggle to find footpaths into the hills.. nothing much on the maps
Thanks Andrew , yeah it was lovely with a bit of sun . If you look online at OS maps and open up the area you want . Then click find routes this will give you a lot routes people have done and I find this a good guide.
Nice video again Dave, I’ve often toyed with the idea of a tracking pole tent but I’d begrudge the import duty.
Cheers Darren , no import duties from MLD don’t know how I’ve bought twice and never had any to pay 🤷♂️
Happy New tent Dave 👍👍that looks like a great area the sunset looked great atvb Jimmy 😎😎👍👍
Cheers Jimmy always a good day when a new tent is out lol TFW atb Dave
It's always good to see new shelter Dave. It will be interesting to see how you get on looks like it pitches just right. I did have a dcf Trailstar but it never sat right. Great views and not a person to be seen. Great. Atb Grant 👍.
Thanks Grant , the flatter the ground the better but as you know that’s rare in the hills for pitching. It was a lovely peaceful trip atb Dave ⛺️👍
Wowsa Dave...DCF at last....you just couldn't resist it😉. I bet you notice the difference in weight. No soggy sil'...😀any more!!! Im gagging to get back up there on the tops but weather has been the pits. Whats that Pack??.....Look after that DCF; it needs a lot of TLC; handle it gently😇.
Thanks Annie , yeah it’s supa light and yes handle it like a baby lol … the sil does go very saggy in wet conditions 🌧️🌧️😂 the pack is my frameless 3FUL with a few mods I have made . Weather has been really poor for March let’s hope April is better 😎😎⛺️👍
@@BorderRambler April HAS to be better as all my tents and shelters are going rusty with underuse. But the MSR is worn out...
@@catherineweaver9302 so what you are saying is you need a new tent 😂⛺️👍
@@BorderRambler needing a new tent Dave.?...no wrong there!!! I need MANY new tents🤣...Living in the Hubba as my home for 3 months gets boring...so this year sod the bank account.....Im buying...😂
@@catherineweaver9302 Annie go for it we only live once , now what are you going to buy ??? And we will deffo have a camp this year in our new tents ⛺️😂👍
Are you still liking the MLD Solomid? Which inner net were you using in this video, one from Lanshan? Do you always remove the inner from the outer tent before packing up?
Yes still liking my Solomid , it was the Lanshan inner on this camp , but I now have the mld inner . Yeah I strip inner down but that’s just my preference . Atb Dave
@@BorderRamblerthanks for the response. Do you prefer the MLD inner to the Lan Shan inner? I asked Ron at MLD about the possibility of having a custom inner made with solid sidewalls about halfway up and he said they weren’t doing anything like that for now. Do you find the Lan Shan InnerNet with the partial solid sidewalls makes a significant difference when the winds are cold and blowing?
@@wanttogo1958 obviously the MLD inner fits perfect unlike the Lanshan which fits ok but droops a bit on the ends. I havent used the mld setup on a really cold windy night , but watch this space as I’m heading out soon to give it a try. But the Lanshan 1 inner did protect you from the wind .
Hi great video and love the look of the solo mid. Where did you get the inner from? Do you have a link please. Regards Paul.
That inner is from AliExpress the T door version, however I have upgraded it to the plus version. It’s a little longer and wider and fits much better in my opinion.

Excellent thank you, I’m now watching your Luna solo video, which do you prefer? Luna solo or solomid?
@paulhartley2709 lunar solo is easier for summer camps and the solomid for more wilder weather camps as it anchors much better ⛺️👍
Will a wide pad fit in the solomid xl? i.e. the new xlite nxt wide?
I can’t see why not as the shelter is plenty big enough, but all depends if you use an inner and that is wide enough . I use the regular thermarest and no issues .
Sorry, you what inner tent you are using here?
Would you recommend mld solomid xl for this kind of conditions? Is it really that strong amd wind resistant as they claim? I m after a trekking pole tent, but dont want to compromise on protection during bad weather..
Thank you
The inner is a 3ful gear one , however I have replaced it with another 3ful gear plus size one which fits much better as the one in the video wasn’t the best fit .
I have always found it a solid shelter in bad weather. But it ain’t no Hilleberg and of course it’s all about where you pitch it.
Pitch on a ridge in a howling gale in any tent and you will feel it.
I have a few trekking pole tents , MLD, Lanshan 1 and Lunar solo and have had no issues in bad weather . Atb Dave
Yey! Great to see you back out Dave - and with a new toy to play with! Loving the new tent, it looks great & it's very photogenic ⛺💚 I'm sure with a few tweaks you'll have it exactly the way you want it. Stunning clouds up there and the colours were beautiful. Weather didn't look too bad either for a change, no gale force winds or rain - I'm so looking forward to the warmer months coming, winter feels like it's gone on for ever this year. TFS :) What quilt do you use Dave?
Dave needs to put a padlock on that tent if you get near it LOL
Thanks Donna , it wasn’t cheap but PayPal pay in 3 eases the pain lol … still tinkering about with it and getting it to suit me . It’s a beautiful area and so quiet , I’m sure you and Annie will be up that way . And we all still need to do a camp together for sure this year eh . The quilt is the UGQ bandit rated to -12 for my cold arse . Roll on some warm weather 😎 Dave ⛺️👍
@@catherineweaver9302 No, lol - I'm not a DCF girl. Pretty to look at but too see-through for me.
@@BorderRambler Cheers Dave, I'm thinking about making a quilt out of my sleeping bag, see how I get on with one first. Some small tarp clips and elastic should secure it under my mattress. And yeah, a camp sometime this year would be neat....in the warmer weather 😁
Some really nice landscape photography in your video, beautiful.
Can I ask where the solid inner came from? I'm tempted to get one of these or a duomid but the mld mesh inner seems a bit too spartan for me.
Thanks , the inner is from a lanshan 1 the 4 season version with the T zip , got mine from Aliexpress . Takes a little bit of adjusting here and there to make it work . Atb Dave
Hi!
Great video. Maybe I missed it, but what kind of inner is that?
It’s the 4 season inner from a

Dave, your as bad as me for having “yet another” new tent ... I’m now upto 5 wild
(+ a 3-man ‘campsite’ tent) camping tents/shelters! 🙈
I’ve also just gone down the trekking pole tent route recently, and brought myself a Lanshan-1 Plus in brown, still waiting for it to arrive, but can’t wait to try it out in the wild when it does..👍🏻
I’m not sure about this Cuban Fibre material, it doesn’t really blend into the natural surroundings that well, and it seems a bit too transparent for my liking 😳
It is extremely light, waterproof and strong though!
I know I need treatment , I might have to offload a couple … maybe lol I have been using a mid type tent for about 4 year now so we’ll used to them now. just don’t forget your trekking poles tho 😂 I was the same re the dcf colour etc but so far I am very pleased and only 396g 😎
Will you consider using it like a tarp without the inner in the warmer months dave? Is it cuben fibre?
I sure will when it warms up a bit , and yes Cuban fibre Geordie
Where do I get solid inner?

Awesome thanks.
Great review. Thinking about this tent for winter use. Is there one for the Duomid XL? Have you used this version.
Maybe you explained, but my English isn’t the best… What kind of innertent are you using? Thank you!
It was the 4 season inner from a Lanshan 1 . Thanks Dave
Nice Vlog as ever Dave. That looks like a cracking tent. Can I ask why you got this when you have a duomid? Dcf aspect aside what are the pluses for you? And did you consider a Cricket. Very tempted by the MLD stuff. Always looks spot on in terms of quality.
I suppose there is nothing between the two as they both pitch and look the same , I just fancied owning a DCF shelter and loved the duomid so went for the slightly smaller Solomid XL. And I wasn’t really keen on the cricket , atb Dave
Nice vid Dave, I’m doing a bit research on the solomid, really tempted in buying one tbh. Can I ask what you paid, and delivery time? Also what made you go for the DCF? Cheers. Atb Dave
Cheers Dave , I paid £470 inc delivery and probs around 4-5 week wait for delivery . I didn’t get any custom/import charges either , I have bought twice from them and avoided it both times ? Lucky I don’t know ?
I just fancied a dcf shelter as have only ever had silnylon , pleased with it so far only negative is doesn’t pack down like silnylon and you have handle it more carefully . But I do anyway . Thanks Dave
@@BorderRambler cheers for that Dave, appreciate it mate 👍
Hi, good video as always! Is that a new pack your using? Like the look of it!
Thanks , it’s my old 3FUL frameless pack which I have added a few mods to it . Atb Dave
Great video as always, thank you for sharing. Do you think they are taking the piss with the cost of these tents? It seems to me they are charging a lot for the material provided. I've been looking for a value trekking pole tent but they all seem way overpriced to me.
Thanks for watching Sean , yeah they are a bit heavy on the price . I done it via pay in 3 on PayPal it doesn’t feel as bad then 😂 and also no import duties from the states . Twice I’ve bought from MLD and avoided charges.
Good stuff dave. Is it a new pack? You normally have the Exos? Gordon
Thanks Gordon , the pack is my 3ful gear which I have had a few years now , I have added a few mods to add my poles and added cord to the front and a few other useful additions. it’s a frameless one but is working better with the mods . atb Dave . ps still have the exos tho ⛺️👍
@@BorderRambler ah right. Thought you’d splashed out on a dcf bag too or something :-)
Hi Dave. Nice vlog again. Very nice tent as well. Can I ask what this gives you over the duomid? (Dcf aside). I’m looking at MLD. But interested to hear what you think between the 2 tents. And were you tempted with a Cricket? Cheers again. Sean.
@sean B I suppose there is nothing between the two as they both pitch and look the same , I just fancied owning a DCF shelter and loved the duomid so went for the slightly smaller Solomid XL. And I wasn’t really keen on the cricket , atb Dave
