  • Would you like a Rooftop Tent for your truck? Rather not spend that much money? This video shows how to build a deck on your truck's bed that allows mounting an inexpensive truck bed tent, providing most of the benefits of elegant rooftop tents. And the design offers several additional advantages as well.
    Got time on your hands during the Wuhan Flu pandemic? Spend a day and build one yourself. Dimensions for my 2018 Silverado are included; you'll need to modify them a bit for other trucks.

    Great video, very well explained and easy to listen to. I haul my ATV so I don't think it would work for me. But I still enjoyed watching

    I always wondered why I couldn't just put a regular tent in the back of my truck. This answered a lot of questions. Thanks for sharing!

    This is a genius idea! I had watched many videos trying to find a solution to lack of storage space whilst camping; there are things that you just don't want to put in the cab. Brilliant! Thank you!!

    Very good video content, presentation, editing, etc. Thanks for not adding music. Creativity for enhancing remote camping, two thumbs up, as I’m on my second truck bed tent and this has given me ideas to improve and build on. Beautiful property you are on as well. Appreciate you sharing this to others who have likeminded interests.

    i think getting a cot is more cost and effort effective although laying a underside insulated plywood floor would go a long way in controling the temp inside the tent...

    Consider a Softopper, it folds down in a minute for full bed excess. It is a weather tight sleeping area, if you build a drawer system it's even better. No set up or take down, just unload or load any gear that doesn't fit in the drawers.

    This is a fine idea for a tent camper. You may be able to use a short length of cold roll steel as a roller for you drawer.

      Thanks, Abimael. Unfortunately for me, I'm actually USING it right now, having been evacuated for wildfire (August 2020--This is not a joke!). It is working out OK. A follow-up video will show experiences on the road--whenever I get a suitable computer to do the video processing.

    3/8" Teflon strips of those plastic cutting boards screwed to the bottom of the draws in line with the ribs of the truck box will work awesome at keeping draw sliding easy n straight

    You are a very creative individual! Me, not so much. Can you please share how you attach the tailgate piece with dowels? Thanks in advance

    • @k6xx793
      @k6xx793  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Brian. Thank you for your kind words.
      I had some 3/8" dowel stock (you can get it from the 'big box' home improvement store or any lumber yard) and cut a few 3/4" lengths from it. Then I assembled the truck deck and drilled 3/8" holes in the right positions. The dowel pieces were glued into the plywood. The matching holes in the 2x4s were drilled out the next size larger so the dowels fit easily. Pretty simple, really. There most likely is a better way, but as you saw, I was using materials on hand.

    Can you think of anyway to provide security for your items in storage area, as, if you left the setup area, your generator, solar battery, etc., would provide easy, quite visible, pickings.

    • @k6xx793
      @k6xx793  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The philosophy is "out of sight, out of mind". When we were evacuated (Aug 2020) and actually needed this thing for a few days, used screws to attach the plywood decking to the frame, preventing easy access to riff-raff, but it certainly isn't high security.
      The generator is going to be visible--it is too big to fit beneath. You could store it inside the cab when parking in town.

    I guess I must have missed something. Where did you get the tent and what kind is it? Why is the bottom of the tent stuffed inside the bed? Won't that allow rain to get in the bed of the truck bed? Did the tent come with the awning over the tailgate? How are the risers attached to the truck? You also said you use the bottom as a tonneau cover. Does that mean that you raise it high enough to be level with the bed of the truck? If so how do you do that?

    • @k6xx793
      @k6xx793  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      K6XX
      - It is just the cheapest tent designed for a full-sized truck found on ebay. Was $99 in March 2020. Looks like they are about $140 now. It came with the awning. Search for "truck bed tent" and you'll find lots to chose from.
      -bottom is inside the bed because that's the way the design works. It is a _truck bed_ tent.
      -It woks in the rain OK. The tent bottom is waterproof and the truck bed drains, so water does not accumulate.
      Risers attach to the truck in the holes along the sidewalls.
      The deck is NOT flush with the sidewalls, since this wouldn't work with the tent. It is similar to a tonneau cover.

    Well done... so this tent is a truckbed tent just set on a platform... not a ground tent ? Regards

    • @k6xx793
      @k6xx793  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the comment. Simple answer: yes.
      The truck bed tent (see eBay, etc.) fits into the truck bed very neatly, but with the deck installed you get three main benefits:
      1. No wheel well humps to deal with
      2. A flat surface, which is much more comfortable than the corrugated metal truck bed
      3. Storage. Whether in motion or set up for camping, you may store your things under the deck. They don't have to be moved every time you move.

    What about toilet storage & supplies, & water?

    • @k6xx793
      @k6xx793  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I purchased a plastic toilet and sink from an e-bay vendor. The toilet would easily fit in the generator cut-out, or in a second cutout as you prefer. Water fits beneath the deck, just like gasoline for the generator.
      Unfortunately the plastic toilet & sink burned up along with my house last August, so I can't show you what they look like.
      Yes, as a matter of fact I did evacuate using this truck bed tent deck. It worked well, especially given the circumstances.

    Airbedz makes a air mattress that goes around the wheel wells and the bed would be lower and then you just get a truck bed tent done put all the gear in the cab
