@@rac1equalsbestgame853 I think those allergies work differently, because there are no proteins for the IgE to attach to. So calling them allergies might be a misleading in the first place.

I was quite surprised that people comment negatively ever about this channel. So much research is clearly done and lots of effort is put into staying relevant and not biased when delivering the information. Just wanted to say people should be thankful that this level of quality is available for free. Also, I always have found the narration to be compelling in terms of calm delivery and tone. As a person who suffers from allergies from sources such as seasonal, pets, dust and mold, I appreciate a video that delves deep into this topic. It's good to know that researchers are working on this. Glad to get here via Tom Scott

@@VantageX what? Im defineatly NOT allergic to dust and most people arent (though it surely isnt rare either), my body doesnt have allergic reaction to dust.
And WHAT? "Nearly everyone has thoose allergies"?? Majority defineatly have one of thoose allergies, but "nearly everyone" isnt allergic to PETS (sure, many people are allergic to some pet type).
Mold allergy? Ok, that is something nearly everyone(or just everyone? I dont know) has.

@@VantageX Wow, it's rare for someone to be as completely wrong as you are.
I had a scratch test done when I was 5 back in the '60's and was allergic to over 200 things. Through my teen years, my sinuses would close completely during certain times of the year with no meds available. Then in adulthood, the allergies lessened to just a mild annoyance. Now past 60 they have come back with a vengeance but at least we have meds for it because without the meds the allergies are overwhelming. I enjoyed the video.
God I couldn’t imagine not having meds available. I’m in my 20’s and as a child I suffered horribly from allergies. Didn’t help living in an old farm house. My well meaning mother didn’t want me taking any pills so I had to always tough it out with strong cups of coffee and steam.

Good job bringing this topic to light. I've read enough BS on Facebook regarding allergies & the crazier treatments prescribed there. This video needs to go viral for everyone to get the basics.
Also, amazing revision on how it's the histamines that get released post-allergies. The animation really cemented it for me.
Those crazy ppl tend to have numerous followers. And to some ppl with fallacious reasoning, more followers = more credible.

I feel the same way, then I often explain topics I learned from the videos to my friends or family and they are often intrigued as well. The topics are often interesting and in-depth, which I highly enjoy.

hay fever takes all the joy out of summer for me, the times i spend as a kid chilling outside on the lawn or at bbq with my family is just not fun anymore, its a real bummer, but it makes me enjoy the winter all the more, so thats nice atleast ^^

Dude actually means: man of fashion. A man that cares alot about his physical image. It used to be a word for gay or metrosexual guys but thats because those guys tend to voice/show their care for fashion while other guys dont want to be assosiated with women and/or gay and therefore look flatout messy/uncaring.
Anyways: while not meaning what most people think it means, its from histories perspective an inherently gendered word.
Doesnt however means it has to stay that way. We give meaning to words and without us they are meaningless nor even existent. One thing people can do is own the word and give it their own meaning.

I've been on antihistamines for the last sixteen years - no idea what I'm allergic to, but its literally everywhere it seems xD ... So I'm especially happy you decided to shine your light onto this particular topic.
This is so weird... Both of my parents are from central Mexico, like several hundred miles away from any ocean. Their family has been at that same town for generations now. My great grandma has pictures dating back to the early 1900s of her family in that town. There is even this picture from my now deceased grandfather, of his grandad that looked exactly like him. He claimed that his grandfather and his family had been living there since the 1800s.
For whatever reason, my sister was born with an allergy to fish. Even the smell of fish, especially when being grilled or deep fried is enough to kickstart her allergies. The first time we found out about her allergies she almost died. Her throat and face swelled up and needed hospitalization. This was after she put a piece of fish in her mouth, didn't even swallow it as her reactions started kicking in immediately from touching and tasting it. So I have no freaking clue how she developed that allergy, based on this. Our family never really ate fish since they lived hundreds of miles from any ocean and several miles from any large body of water or river and my family had been living isolated from the ocean for hundreds of years. No one in my family has this allergic reaction to fish, actually nobody in either of my families has any allergic reactions other than my sister. Sister is also allergic to pollen... Also doesn't make sense since the town where my parents and their family is from doesn't really have flowers, its all like a desert.
Very strange. Maybe evolution is actually working the other way around.. maybe we started with deep allergic reactions but then when we needed to eat fish or to walk around the flowers we had been selected to have lesser responses and perfectioned the binds against venom
It could be a mutation her DNA or maybe your parents had recessive genes carrying the allergies
It’s probably just a molecularly similar protein to one that she could have been exposed to (unknowingly) as a baby, like the video goes into? Just my thoughts
Wow, the narrator has such a soothing voice, with great clarity and enunciation. Coupled with in depth research and excellent presentation too. I watched the entire video and was delighted to hear new information on the topic of allergies. Usually I don't leave comments, but seeing the negative feedback at the end pushed me to write this. I have a terrible, grating voice that many people despise, and so I was personally offended to see them hating on someone who sounds perfectly normal. Ignore them, keep making great videos.

This is wonderful information!! I am 78 years old and have been allergic to lots of things all my life, tho thankfully not to the point of death, just eczema and sneezing & eye-reactions. As a result, I’ve kept up with the research all through the years. This is the most amazing presentation I’ve ever seen! Thank you!! 👍🏻❤️❤️❤️
After I know how difficult it is to learn the immune system and how much a medic student has to study to remember all the details, I have a lot of respect for you being able to condense it down into a short 15 min video while not just simply skimming over important facts. Well done video!
The only thing left for me to ask: Are there any studies out there that ask why people who have allergies often tend to get even more, a lot of the times not even connected or crossed ones, but completely random new ones. E.g. I started with a Penicillin allergy, added a peanut allergy on top of that and now I am reacting to almost any kind of nuts and certain drugs like Amoxicillin and Penicillin.
This is a great question and I am no biologist this is my speculation as someone also with compounding non related allergies; could it be related to the fact that allergic reactions increase in severity after each exposure, therefore priming the immune system to be overly sensitive to the allergens but are so reactive that they assume any small potential allergen or one molecularly similar in structure to be of high risk, therefore triggering the response? Would love to learn more from academics on it!
@@smears6039 I would disagree with that hypothesis just on my own personal experience. While I have multiple allergies, I didn't get any new ones in the past few years. Secondly, for your guess to hold true, I should have developed a dust or dust mites allergy already or even sooner than my more outlandish ones, as those are allergens everybody is confronted with on a daily basis.
When it comes to antibiotics or other drugs I would tentatively agree, as those are direct applications to the body besides the norm.
So yeah, it is easier to discard theories than to come up with a good one myself, I'm still clueless :D
My first video of you I watched and it's very well made . You have no reason to doubt yourself , considering how successful you are here . It's funny how the human mind tends to focus on the small negative things , instead of the much larger pool of positive things right in front of us . A survival behaviour that when you learn how it works , you also learn to ignore it . Stay positive ! Cheers !

@@TKUA11 You obviously didn't read all the comments shown; there were at least three anti-evolution comments and one general anti-science comment.
And "haters gonna hate" doesn't always mean literal hate. It encompasses negativity of all kinds, including passive-aggressive.
Unless you've had a public platform with a big following, you can't really understand the toxic levels comments can get to. And it's worse when you're a female because of general systemic sexism, and disturbingly-obsessive misogynistic trolls online whose only purpose in life seems to be to make any prominent woman miserable.

One can 'not like' something and/or disagree with something without being rude, crude, and abusive. When some are negative like that, it says much more about them...not you.
More relevant to this vid...
I've had allergies my entire life. Mostly Hay Fever (pollens), cat dander, soaps/detergents, a couple medications and foods. My allergies were much worse when I was younger. But over time and by not always rushing to take medications for pollen allergies mainly, unless I absolutely had too, and letting my immune system deal with them, they became less sever. Until Covid...but again, I am giving my immune system the time and space to naturally deal with the changes.
As for cats. I found a stray a long time ago. Took him to the vet for medical care. I really liked that cat...there was something special about him. Asked the vet about my cat allergy. He said: 'if I can naturally deal with my immune response (no meds) for about 3 months that my immune system would adjust'. It did.
I had Artemis (my cat) for almost 15 years.
This is a great video; I knew nothing about this topic before, and this video has really opened my eyes.

To add to the discussion of strange allergens, I'm allergic to abrupt temperature changes. I'm not sure why, and it could be genetic or a side effect of some other condition. But my reaction is immediate and vicious, often covering my entire body(and sometimes the inside of my throat) in hives. It's not my only allergen, I also have more typical ones like dust, cat saliva, oak mold, and others. But it's worth discussing because while it is an allergic response, I am unsure if there could or would be a potential evolutionary reason for such a reaction.

I used to be addicted to opiates and just about every opiate binds to histamines/ acts like histamine (not exactly sure which) but causes a histamine rash when you inject and miss a vein. Wonder if that place any part is the evolution of it
Sure, not that evolution is going to "know" what an injection is. Evolution is blind and random. But any response that you have is part of an evolutionary pathway that for whatever reason, provided our ancestors with better survivability.
The bit in this video about sickle cell anemia... NO good reason for that to exist at all!!! But in places where malaria is high and endemic, sickle cell allowed people to be somewhat immune to malaria and just... SURVIVE! Long enough to have kids. That's all that evolution does. You don't see sickle cell in places where there is no malaria. The detrimental aspects of it are far too bad if there are plenty of partners around that do NOT have it.
It really breaks my heart when I see negative comments to a such a informative video, go girl you are delivering much needed information to the masses.

I think it’s just people who are biased against female voices, I too personally prefer deeper male voices for narrations, it’s why a lot of documents have deep male voices narrating. I don’t know the physiology behind it but I for one know I definitely prefer male narration, not that her voice is bad.
In relation to this hopefully you can also create a vid about autoimmune diseases . It has always fascinated me as to why our own immune system would attack our own body. Great content btw.

Loved the video! I was reading about the shellfish allergy thing and the proteins that make up the exoskeleton of insects and the cell walls of fungi are similar which can explain why people have some shellfish allergies.
What about allergies that make you stuffy? There's no expulsion there, just slow suffocation.

It reminded me of how some of the dieterian restriction from kosher cuisine may have happened as a way to avoid foods that did not keep well in the heat and could cause diseases in the ancient times.

The weird thing is I was playing outside on grass in forrests and so a lot as a child even when growing up and I deffenitly had some accidents and things like that but with about 14 I one day suddenly got a massive pollen allergy I never had before and since then I still have pollen allergy

Pollen is not “tree sperm.” Plant sexual reproduction doesn’t work the same way as animal sexual reproduction. The pollen grains are microgametophytes, that is, multicellular organisms that produce male gametes (sperm cells). For a succinct explanation read the Wikipedia article “Alternation of generations.”

Your body probably cleared out those IgE antibodies at some point from lack of use. Antibodies and the cells that make them don't live forever. Same with the mast cells they're attached to.
@@thisisatonofbs But that raises the question, how were they gotten in the first place? Presumably they've had processed cheese more than once as an adult and not re-acquired the allergy. So why did they get the allergy once but not again?
Im allergic to cats and have one, everyday I wake up struggling to get air past my throat until I take quadruple the prescribed dose of albuterol to reopen my lungs. Thanks immune system 👍
