  • Feasts - Mexico 2 of 3 - BBC Culture Documentary , recorded 17.09.2011
    Series in which food writer and presenter Stefan Gates immerses himself in some of the most extraordinary feasts and festivals on earth. By joining ordinary people in these strange and wonderful distillations of their culture and beliefs, he hopes to gain a revelatory insight into how the world thinks and feels.
    Stefan goes on a wild emotional and spiritual rollercoaster ride, starting with a teenage girl's bizarre coming-of-age ceremony and ending with the Day of the Dead, a cacophonous cross-cultural festival of the senses during which Mexicans truly believe that their loved ones come back from the dead for three days every year to spend the day with them.
    In Oaxaca, he is dressed up as a dead woman and made to dance like a lunatic at the head of a procession as it makes its way through town. He is turned into an emotional wreck at the moment the dead return, bursting into tears as Dias de los Muertos makes him experience grief and loss for the first time.
    But then in the next breath, the family Stefan is living with teach him to celebrate and laugh at death. They turn his views on their head, allowing him to embrace and conquer his fear of death through an extraordinary sensual onslaught of food, flowers, songs and smells. The sight of the graveyards overflowing with flowers and mescal-drinking revellers is a truly life-changing experience.

    When my mom passed away I did my first alter and I felt more peace then when I was in my own tradition. It was like I got that extra time with my mom that I believed was taken from me. Now even though I have no Mexican heritage I replace Halloween with Los Dia De La Muerte. The children in my neighborhood love it. The children of Hispanic heritage have hugged me for having this. I made a lot of new friends. ❤😊

    My mom, Tia's and grandma all cook molé. I'll tell you this much: that its definitely an acquired taste like wine, but then you start to taste everything that is in it. It's a Smorgasbord of flavors in your mouth. I hated it as a child/teen but i love it now. My favorite is covering chicken on it and making burritos with sopa de arroz (spanish rice) and refried beans with mexican white cheese and homemade flour tortillas. God, I'll stop now. I'm getting hungry.

    Some celebrate it for fun and to remember the culture and tradition of their ancestors. Others do it as a spiritual native tradition to reconnect with their roots and remember their family who have passed away. We remember the happy moments with them and celebrate that and not mourn them.

    It's pretty insulting how he keeps on using the conditional and questions their beliefs. Like when he ponders aloud wondering if they "actually" believe the dead are returning, or when he says Catalina isn't the only one that "thinks" the dead are returning. These beliefs have endured enough criticism and mockery from white people, don't you think?

    • @Samiamgreeneggsandchicken
      @Samiamgreeneggsandchicken 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with what you think. Though I don't think it's "white people" rather than people who don't embrace and appreciate different cultures especially considering he's making a documentary out of it. All cultures have done this to another in history. I've been mocked for my religion in the past, and it has to do a lot with ignorance and not willing to accept differences on outlook of life.

    Yep! But for us as mexicans. Halloween "doesn't exist". It is not part of our culture. Its just Dia de Muertos. And we celebrate it for two days (1st and 2nd of November). The first day is for kids or under 18 years old people that. passed away and the second day is for older people like over 18 years old people that passed away. This celebration is not just for Oaxaca. It is celebrate it in all around Mexico. But every state has its own way to celebrate it because eche one has different cultures like Maya, etc. So Dia De Muertos is a beautiful and Special fay for Remembering our lovely friends and family that have passed away but they "never die". They will always live in our hearts. Ben noneofyourbeeswax

      ***** the Chinese Ghost Festival would intrigue you.
      It has a similar purpose to Dia de Muertos, in that it is about honoring the dead and to give them offerings. There are no big parties, but the Chinese burn paper money and paper mache goods shaped like objects to their ancestors at the graves (the belief is that when an object is burned, it is transported to the realm of the dead).
      Its also said that during the Chinese Ghost Festival marks the day where ALL of the dead come and visit the living, not just your ancestors. This would even include chinese opera performances for the dead (in empty halls.....empty...of the living at least) and entire meals set up with chairs for the dead.

    The Day of the Dead is celebrated differently threw out Mexico. Most Mexicans don't really believe the dead are coming back. It's more about remembering loved ones that are no longer hear and respecting Dead rather than fearing it. Like the historian lady had explained.

      Danny Fenty I think it's primarily a Catholicism vs. Protestantism thing. Protestants seem to never feel totally comfortable colorful and lively art in the church or cemetery or other religious places. They prefer reserved and somber decoration. Of course there are some beautiful huge altars in America, but they are all in catholic homes and churches! I wish there were more Catholics in America so art would be more vivid and religious here. I love paintings and mosaics and statues of Jesus and Mary and all the saints. ❤️🌹💎🌙👼👩🏽🕊🌞✨🍷🍞
