@@DarrellBraunGuitar looked this up a while back. From what I read and found out from a rep. They use poly finish (even in the matte finishes) and the Necks are "unfinished" but have some sort of hand rubbed coating to protect it. Whatever that means 😂 Note this was in 2017. When the Solid body line was introduced. May have changed since.
You're such a great player that I always have to remind myself that know matter how much I love the guitar (and I do) it WILL NOT sound the same in my hands. Still, that is one beautiful guitar. Thanks Darrell. Kevin O'Rourke
Purchased the D'Angelcio Deluxe Excel a few years ago. Looks pretty much like the same guitar with Dimarzio's instead of the Tim Armstrong's. Of course adding the Coil Splits is a bonus. My Excel SS is FAB!! Playability, tone and build quality are well above expectation. D'Angelcio doesn't get enough Love. Since they were purchased in 2015-6 by a guy who truly was a fan of the Original, the quality has gone up considerably. This new owner has done such a great job in a short period of time, quality control and attention to detail is terrific. bringing on new products and improving the old. Fret finishing is the best of ANY Korean made guitar I've tried. Thing is, these comments are made without usually touching or playing the instrument. In other words judging the Country of origin and not the guitar. Too bad. Congrats Darrell, very nice Guitar!! Enjoy !!
D'Angelico is really on a roll these days! Some stunning looking and sounding guitars coming out of that factory. I don't really need a new guitar, but...
You definitely got your groove on with this guitar! Nice playing! The six way switch is a no brainer, giving a player a multitude of options. This will catch on with other makers, just wait and see.
I bought a similar guitar a few years ago, an Ibanez AM153-DBS Artstar. I like the 335-style guitars - who doesn't - but I'm not a fan of the size, which is about 17" across the lower bout. The size of the body on the Ibanez AM153-DBS is 14 ½" across the lower bout, and much more comfortable to play. As a reference, a solid body Les Paul is round about 13". It's fitted with a 'Tri-Sound' mini toggle switch, which changes the humbucker neck pickup from a normal series configuration, to a parallel configuration, or you can have a single coil. It gives you a few extra sounds in conjunction with the 3-way toggle switch. My version came in a stunning figured Bubinga body, and is finished in dark brown sunburst, which gives it an antique vintage vibe. It has an Artstar 3pc Mahogany/Maple set-in neck and super 58 (H) Alnico pickups. I fitted a B5 “Horseshoe” Vibrato using a Vibramate V5 Quick Mount Kit, and also fitted a Vibramate String Spoiler. I also changed the bridge for a Schaller STM roller bridge, all in gold to match the rest of the hardware. It came supplied in a very nice Ibanez black faux alligator leather case, and I paid just £599 (2016) for it, it was an absolute bargain considering what you get. It's a versatile guitar and can produce some interesting sounds. It's one of my favourite guitars and I absolutely love it!
Played one of these a few days ago at GC and fell in love instantly. It was bright, not boxy and dull sounding like a 335, played like butter, was light as a feather and beautiful. I'm in love and must have . Wringing hands ~~ The 12 string is also SWEET
@@ravecaster May try that sometime. Of course I'd need to source the 6-way switch and would need to have a guitar that has 2 tapped humbuckers (or swap 'em out). But it is a cool switch and I'm hoping more guitar manufacturers take notice.
Maybe the thought of a six-way switch isn't enough to make this vintage manufacturer look hot, or get me going. The guitar stands alone, that's for sure. That "Empire State Building" could use etching.
Some people just don't like his content. I wouldn't go as far as to actually downvote him he's very talented, but I can see why people would dislike him.

Hi Darrell. I just order one of these. Can’t wait to get it and it was an absolute bargain. €899 on thomann for the matte royal blue with hard case and free shipping to Ireland. This review really helped my decision. Thank you.
I just bought one and wanted to share: ProAudioStar sells them for $799 for Black Friday. In case you have been dreaming of one. I have no connection to ProAudioStar except that I bought one from them myself and now waiting for the delivery.
Great video, it swayed me to buy this exact model on Proaudiostar's Black Friday sale, I can't wait for it to come! If it's as nice as it seems from what I've watched I'm going to grab a few more if they're still around.
Great review as ever. I bought a Premier DC (in gorgeous ocean turquoise) after your review of that guitar. The Excels area way outside of my budget and I was worried that the Premier would always be a compromise guitar, but not at all. I tried Epihone, Ibanez (artcore AM/AS series) and have to say the D'Angelico really stood out - it seemed to have something that the others didn't - maybe it's the headstock - but I definitley got a sense of heritage about it. Although it didn't factor into my original purchase, I'm glad that I went for something a bit different, not the usual Gibson/Fender/Epi/Ibanez. The guitar is also incredibly versatile in tone.

I am flabbergasted at the seemingly limitless range of guitars being made. It seems like only a few years ago it was Gibson, Fender, Rickenbacker and a few boutique brands. There is a builder on youtube, Highline Guitars , that look fabulous. His guitars that are not custom built for a customer, sell on Reverb for about $1500. Mahogany body, Hipshot tuners, SS frets, Rosewood, mother of pearl, and other 1st class stuff. I think it would be interesting if Darrell compared a boutique guitar like this to a mass produced guitar of similar stats.
That’s probably one of the Free-Way switches (available through StewMac). I installed the Tele version on my Warmoth Tele when I built it a couple of months ago and I love it. I'd been hoping for months that DBG would review these switches.
I love the tones from that guitar! They're all great, but the clean sounds are unusually beautiful! The six-way switch is very cool, but I wonder how well it will hold up when used by a working musician playing a lot of gigs. Who makes it? Switchcraft? Thanks for this great demo!
I actually don't like 6-way switches and much prefer push-pull pots for coil splitting. It's a lot easier to see if you have a coil split with push-pull pots, and if you use a 6-way and need to switch fast, I don't like having to think if I need to switch it in the right orientation. Seems like a more complicated mouse-trap to me. With that said, GREAT video! Always love your reviews.
I've never liked pull pots, so if that switch is reliable, it would be my preferred option. But I would still prefer a separate coil split switch over either.
These D'Angelico guitars seem really awesome. On my list of "aspirational brands" along with Duesenberg, Heritage, Collings, etc ... What I wonder about that 6-way switch is: is it "too easy" to switch into the "wrong" position? I.e. if I'm in the middle of a solo and want to switch from (for example) the neck pickup to the bridge pickup, and if I quickly flick the switch, is it likely to go instead into one of the single-coil positions? Will I have to really concentrate on that switch for a second while I make sure it's in the right one of those 6 positions?
Stew-Mac offers a 6 way switch (Freeway Ultra) for those wanting to install one into their single-cut guitar (as I now want to do with my ESP Eclipse, lol).
That pickup selector basically works like a manual gearbox lever and I absolutely love it!
Its called a Free-Way Switch
Might be hard to resist the temptation to make engine noises while "shifting"
Yeah. Would jave neen cool if they called it a 6speed switch. Then they could have variants like, 3speed switch etc etc
I believe they have three different variants... two of which are 6 speed manuals. No BS paddle shifting here.
I bought the prewired version of the freeway switch and put it in a LesPaul to do coil splitting. Works fantastically well and has made that guitar much more versatile.
Always thought by far dangelico has by far the sexiest headstock
I am a simple man, I see a D'Angelico with Darrel in it, I click. Always a pleasure to tune in! Cheers!
