After being diagnosed with terminal cancer 7 years ago, I decided that my bucket list would be a British Shorthair cat. My Alfie sat on me when I came home from my daily radiation. I got another one from the same wonderful breeder in Washington state. These Brit boys have enriched my life, as well as my kids. They are one of the reasons why I'm still alive for all this time. Buying pure breed cats is not evil. No one tells people not to get purebred dogs. How sad would it be if all purebred cats died out? This almost happened to this breed after WWII. I also have 3 rescue cats. Are you depressed? Pet a BSH, then you won't be anymore.

Hope you’re still here and as healthy as u can be. I lost my dog a few years ago, the month after I had appendicitis and went to ER, they found a tumor on my kidney while looking for the pain I went into ER for. Had to have kidney removed the month after my appendix came out. Had started a new job w a decent amount of overnight travel, so a dog would be tough. But I had a month off of work to recover from the surgery and I knew it was the best time to get a new pet and bond. I started looking for cats but the adoption process was long and was flat out told I’d be lower on the list since I was a single guy working and living alone. I have the means so I went to a pet store (the one where I bought my perfectly healthy puggle that recently died after 14 years) and got my Harlequin Cream BSH. He’s likely the best pet I’ve had. Also the opposite of most everything this video says. Loves to cuddle, sit on my lap, be held, not lazy, pretty trim. I also chose not to neuter him, first pet ever, so I do believe that changes attributes, it seems it would have to. Doesn’t spray or hump or moan like everyone said he would. Also, breeders are gonna breed. Me deciding not to buy one doesn’t stop the breeder, it just means instead of my home the cat is left in a box in the woods 20 miles from their house. Aren’t people who buy from a breeder also just rescuing a cat? It’s already birthed, gotta go somewhere.

This isn't all true. (with my 13 years of experience)
    1. You're saying that they don't like being picked up and that is not true, every day instead of my cat wasting her energy that took her 5 hours of sleep to gain, I pick her up and she gladly walks into my arms.
    2. British Shorthairs like being in their families and sometimes feel lonely if they were bought alone. All other cat breeds are just the same as British Shorthairs if they did not grow up with them as they feel jealous since they're not getting all of the love from their owners.
    3. My cat is rarely ever naughty, she never intentionally does the wrong thing. She only ever makes bad decisions when she genuinely needs to do something for herself as she does not understand how all of the other people would feel about it.
    3. I don't live in an extremely busy place and she has never been hurt by animals because she went outside. She only ever goes outside when either there are birds or the sun is out so she can sunbathe.
    4. It's not fair to just blindly say "You're not committed" as it takes effort to take care of any cat breed and not only British Shorthairs.
I don't believe that all of this is fair to just talk about British Shorthairs badly and say things like "You're not committed" when it takes effort and responsibility to take care of any cat breed.

Maybe because there are so many stray cats it ridiculous and inhumane to buy from a breeder. Even here in my area of Canada BC where stray dogs aren’t common there’s still overflowing stray and feral cats everywhere. It’s wrong. Dog breeds serve a purpose for specific jobs and lifestyles atleast so I can understand why many people go for breeders, although I encourage to always try rescuing first, especially in areas in where stray dogs are a problem, but cat breeds don’t serve a purpose they’re literally just for looks, and cuteness. You can literally get any cat you bond with in a shelter and it works out. Cats are low maintenance, don’t require the extensive training dogs do, there’s no excuse for going for purebred cats either than looks and maybe personality but…
Fun Fact: cat colours play a roll in personality all of which are in shelters so finding the right cat for you is way easier. Black cats for instance are known for being dog like in behaviour, orange cats are huge clowns and goofballs, tortoiseshells and calicos are full of sass, tuxedo kitties are the lovable trouble makers and do on. The only exception would be allergies and someone needs a hypoallergenic cat, other than that please rescue from shelters. There are dozens in need of homes.

My four year old grey British boy, my best friend who was an adored and very loved member of the family, died a few days ago due to complications after a medical operation. He survived the first one well a year ago, he started to have urinating problems at the age of three, and all was good, he healed well. I took care of him every day like I would care for a baby. Then later a problem in his bowel was found and two days after the operation he perished. I keep thinking what could I have done differently, I blame myself very hard about this. I promised him always that I will hold his little paw until the end, and this I did. I had never experienced a cat so well behaved, so smart and sweet, who really can look directly in your soul with his golden eyes. Getting over losing him has been more difficult than losing a person in my life, he had become such an important part of my existence. I was not ready to lose him so quickly. He lived a happy life, not one day passed that I did not tell him how much I loved him and showed deep affection. I could always truly feel how he loved me back, with his actions. Now I try to bury the sorrow by watching videos of grey Brits...

We lost our 6 years old Reggie almost 2 years ago to a sudden illness, and I still shed tears when remembering him. Reggie was a true gentleman and so very polite at all times, and brought much joy during his years with us. We adopted another BHS last year and guess what? It turned out that Ziggy is a cousin of our late Reggie, they have the same great grandfather named Huggy Bear. This discovery filled us with amazement, especially because the boys could not be further apart in temperament. Ziggy is a wild beast who enjoys killing small creatures like crickets, moths, dragonflies, spiders, and even small frogs. Oh and he has no manners whatsoever, bites hard and scratches even harder, and vocalises every single displeasure at the top of his lungs :)

Some good advice, but my old friend is the most polite and friendly companion, I wouldn't change him for the world. When he is not sleeping he sits with me in the evenings, runs to greet me in the mornings and follows me everywhere. He doesn't scratch, bite or damage furniture. He always purrs when I give him attention or if he is just sitting next to me. Yes he is not a lap cat but given his size that is probably for the best.

This video is all wrong. I rescued mine off the streets at just 9 weeks old. He was probably dumped earlier but that is how old he was when I found him. Dumped with his father because they were male. Animals dumped in this area of the city is a real epidemic. I have rescued, fostered and help find homes for over thirty. I kept him though he was my first adoptee in my home. Near death I nursed him to health. He is my healthiest, friendliest and most lovable cat. Best potty trained and most well behaved. He is also the most playful with humans and other cats.( in fact I call him the welcome wagon). I have taken care of all breeds of cats. Cats need respect and time. Although it also comes down to human treatment. If poor they will be poor. If great they will be and develop loving, respect, and undying loyalty to you. My sisters cat she adopted from us. After a human threw him from a moving car on or yard. He protected her from an intruder over her Husky( who is too loving) to protect her. So cats really can be humans best and most protective friend.

All the British shorthair cats that I have met are very friendly and like to be picked up and enjoy a cuddle. Plus they are cute and boofy!
I agree re going to a shelter to get a cat . But if people want a pure bred that is their choice I guess. Sometimes people choose a pure bred cat/dog due to their temperament etc.

    • @BK-is5fj
      @BK-is5fj ปีที่แล้ว +1

Temperament doesn’t matter with cats. Any cat can suit anyone’s lifestyle, they don’t require training like dogs, are way easier to take care of so temperament doesn’t matter. And you can find every cat temperament in a shelter. Cat colours actually play a huge roll in cat temperaments. Black cats are known for being dog like and super friendly, orange cats are known for being clowns, tuxedos are mischievous, tortoiseshells and calicos are all sass, white cats are typically gentle and calm. :)

It's so interesting to see the difference in cat culture between USA and UK, in terms of letting them outdoors or not. I only recently became aware that Americans keep their kitties indoors. It sure must save the birdies (a cat - not mine - left a headless pigeon in my back garden yesterday). I don't think that purposeful harming of cats is a problem in the UK, though. At least, definitely not in my cat-loving neighbourhood.

    • @newuk26

I think in some parts of the US it’s also to do with predators.
In the UK there are very few wild animals that could hurt a Cat. Maybe an Adder? Not sure their bite is strong enough to take down a Cat.
Perhaps a Fox? But to be honest a fully grown British Shorthair would be a match for a Fox.
The US has to worry about a Wolf or Bear getting their Cats

Ive got a british shorthair thats my best friend in the whole world. He really likes men only for some reason and has attached himself to me hardcore. There friendship is hardcore and demanding. Its true about everything they say on here about them. Mine has a problem with eating plastic garbage on the ground so I have to watch him for that. They tend to be big cats from what ive seen and mine is pretty bulky with a big round head large mouth with very big sharp teeth and a little curved tail tip. They also need lots of brushing compared to my siamese that needs little to no brushing. They also tend to not like to be picked up much so little children may get bitten when messing with them but they absolutely love being on laps.

My british shorthair chocolate tortie is pure pedigree and a very healthy cat and I have not seen mention of major health concerns in the breed hence their long life span which you raise. You do not elaborate on what these claimed nasty health issues are and best you clarify if you expect your comments to be taken seriously.

If you are at poland and looking for adoption one, just comment.
We already have 13 dogs, he seems scared to be around them.
He is cold (cause it's winter) and doest move alot probably sick or depressed.
My gf mom says that he hear this cat days before, means he possibly spend 2 days at the backyard.
There is not alot neighbors here and as far as we know, nobody claims him.

My advice: don't get a British Short Hair since they are too soft, affectionate, loving. You won't be able to leave the house anymore without missing them, or seeing people without talking about them and showing pictures of them that will take all your phone storage space. You will not enjoy vacation as much if they are with petsitter. Those things will only get problematic more and more overtime with the bond you'll form with them.
True story. My spouse and I became crazy cat parents the first day we met our British Shorthair girl.

You obviously haven't got a clue, the only true comment is they need lot of combing and they love every moment of it. Further more pets (cats and dog) mirror their human. Ours have been/are the cuddly, lap cats, passive lovable breed we have ever owned.

Never seen a happier cat than one that lives both in and outdoors as they choose. Yes, it's potentially dangerous, but freedom is worth the risk. I feel bad for cats locked inside; their whole lives restricted to the tiny world of the apartment/house.

  • @BrixiDieHexe

Wow, such weird generalization's. Brits are affectionate and though laid back, they do play. They do like other animals, I have sisters who think every dog they meet is their friend. Just like other long haired cats, they have to be brushed. Reasons you might not want to watch this persons videos? They know absolutely nothing outside of ordinary knowledge of cats. Just another, "Get a shelter cat first" Duh.
