As if the madness wasn't quite enough, remember that German Football is now rising up, which is exactly 10 years since that nation's World Cup triumph in Brazil. The presence of Borussia Dortmund in the Champions Final this year (despite not being in the best form of the Bundesliga) and Bayer Leverkusen's incredible season under Xabi Alonso (ironically, he was the scorer of Spain during 1-5 humiliation vs the Netherlands), potentially winning the Invincible Treble (Bundesliga, DFB Pokal, Europa League) showed that the Bundesliga is one of the best league in Europe. What's crazier is that if Bayern Munich played better and didn't get caught by the unlucky things against Real Madrid, the Champions League Final this year will be the same final that happened at Wembley in 2013! It might be a good opportunity for the national team to finally win the Euros in front of their home fans this summer, especially because they had won 2 big friendlies this year.

I think people also don’t realize how important this tournament is for Messi.
Imo I feel like if Messi wins this World Cup, he doesn’t do what he does in 2014/15 for the treble. He doesn’t stay as great or develop into as great of a playmaker in 2018.
I think if he wins the 2014 World Cup Messi ends his career at 33/34. He might leave Barcelona early and just do whatever like Xavi or Iniesta.
So Messi not winning is actually what contributes to 2021 Copa America and 2022 World Cup.
Maybe everything does end up happening the same, but if Messi had won the World Cup, I’m pretty sure the only trophy he wouldn’t have won yet would’ve been the Copa America, but it’s not like that would’ve given as much flack as he got from 2014-2020. He has a World Cup, he actually wouldn’t need to win a Copa America.
So basically what I’m saying is, Messi’s career is drastically different, had he won the World Cup. If I’m being honest, I think Messi was extremely pissed off from what happened from 2013/14. His injuries, Barcelona’s losing in the league, Ucl and etc.
So yeah that’s what I think.

    Thank you for this recap.
At the time of this world cup I was 12 years old. Being German, a kid and an avid football fanatic at the time really made for a special experience. People often underestimate the significance of Germany's performance that year. Choked in the Euro final in 2008, choked in the World Cup semi-final 2010 to the same opponent, choked in the Euro semi-final 2012.
At that point everyone knew that Germany without a doubt belonged to the top of the top and had no problem with passing through to the final two rounds. Insane games like 4-1 against a strong English team were nothing uncommon as long as they happened in the group stage. But we had built up a reputation of failing the truly important matches.
2014 was different. It was the perfect team. The year before, Bayern Munich had dominated the world of club football, and like half of the national team was made up of Bayern players. The chemistry was just right and everyone knew it. We had TV shows coming up with original songs on how 2014 would mark the 4th star, football enthusiasm was at a high, the German people just KNEW it was going to happen. And then there was the semi-final - in my opinion the highest peak German football will ever reach. I remember being on the phone with a friend from school that night and it was such an unreal experience. The 7-1 closed all doors of doubt. This time we were gonna make it - like, actaully. It's hard to describe the overall vibe in Germany at that time. Because it was the last year to date when it felt that everyone was a football fan and everyone supported Germany.
The victory in the final was apparently some kind of closure to the choker-reputation from the past two decades. In the following years the legends retired from football, the youngsters failed to live up to their expectations, and our statespeople have allowed the population to dilute to a degree where hardly anyone residing in Germany actually cared about Germany anymore. Including in sports.
At the time of writing this, we have just defeated Scotland 5-1 in the 2024 Euro Cup. Surprisingly, 2024 does have a "different" vibe with more optimism for a great performance of the team. But it's not "different" enough to hope for another title. Another choke in the quarter or semi final is my quess but we shall see.

Something to note: Colombia had a goal disallowed against Colombia because it was "offside" at the 65th minute, but people went back and proved it should've been allowed. I still wonder what would've happened if the refs hadn't blown the whistle as a mistake...

There is a new German documentary about that World Cup.
The best thing in it was the coaches reaction to the first half against Brazil.
He reminded the team of a friendly against Sweden where they led 4-0 and the game ended 4-4.
he also told them that he doesn’t want to see anybody to humiliate the opponents. For example doing tricks, nutmegs etc.
He told the whole team that whoever does that will be subbed out immediately and will NOT play in the final. No matter the name.
Was a huge respect moment. That and the teams behavior in their camp (like meeting with natives, eating with them and watching Brazil games together) was a reason why they were beloved in Brazil even after the 7-1.

I remember watching Germany-Brazil with my gf at the time, we were home because we weren't feeling well enough to go out and watch with others. For whatever reason our livestream was lagging behind by a few minutes, and with the windows open, we could hear the public viewing event that took place a bit up the road from my apartment. So every time Germany scored, the people at the event cheered, more or less "spoiling" the game for us. I vividly remember the look of disbelief on my gf's face, the cheers came in so rapidly, but for us it was still 1-0 for a while. I'll never forget that, it was an incredible experience.

      Because it already had:
      1. Netherlabds vs Spain matchup after 2010, Van Persie Header and 5-1 for Revenge
      2. Portugal premature Group stage exit
      3. The Historic 7-1 against Brazil on their soil
      4. People watching Neymar as rising star and he got out on injuries
      5. And Finally, now they Appreciate Messi at least reaching the World Cup Final. Because he ultimately won it 8 years later making much more of a Fairy tale. So it doesnt hurt much. And the Germans won
And the Songs like : Magic in the Air and Jennifer Lopez/Pitbull song was fire. Shakira's La La La song was just fine. The opening of 2014 WC was also cool with nostalgic feeling already.
The Weather was great to look even on TV

Great vid! Hearing it narrated in a Brazilian accent, the Kings of football, really added to it all.
That semi-final will always be remembered as the most shocking scoreline in a WC as the giants never get thrashed like that.
I read some where, the German players in the dressing room at halftime, being 5-0 up, knowing the match was done with that scoreline, spoke about not disgracing the Brazilians further, whether true or not IDK, but they did come out in the 2nd half as if there was some truth to that.
Goetze goal was sublime but that Brz-Germany game stole the headlines of that tournament.
Losing Neymar & Silva for the semi, was the writing on the wall that it just wasn't meant to be for the hosts.
Only for a Theirry Henry handball, Ireland would've have been there, for I would have loved to seen the joyous Irish fans mixing with the carnival joy of the Brazilians.
But for me the most thrilling WC game ever, was the 2022 WC final of Argentina v France.
It had so many subplots, amongst them the Messi/Mbappe match up, Messi's last WC (?), Frnace the defending champions, Mbappe scoring a hatrick, it was just electrifying entertainment!
It was the last game of football my dad ever watched, what a sporting memory to take with you.

this world cup was good for a number of reasons: 1 a healthy mix of countries; 2 having more than the usual five south american representatives; 3 two african countries making the round of 16, but it could have been three had ivory coast claimed the maximum three points against greece in their final group game, not played for a draw; 4 there was no VAR to influence the outcome of matches; and 5 the last tournament to be overseen by sepp blatter before he was ousted as president of the world game the following year as payback for not awarding england the 2018 world cup and USA the 2022 world cup. if he had remained in charge he would have kept the number of teams at 32 and awarded morocco or egypt the 2026 world cup; europe would have the 2030 finals with england, turkey, portugal, poland and greece in with a chance of hosting the 2030 world cup meaning some smaller countries in europe and other continents would have had a realistic shot at staging the competition on their own in future world cups based on tournament pedigree and infrastructure not human rights records.

You had one big miss information. And i will give you one of the greatest quotes in football. Del Bosqe was not the coach of Spain on the first euro they won. he took over for the world cup in South Africa 2010. Luis Aragones was the coach in the Euro 2008. And prior to the final he was asked what he thinks about Spain chances of Lifting the Trophy. And his response was : " I think that this team will win the world cup in 2 years". Even at that point he was quite old and sadly enough he didn't live enough to see them win the world cup in 2010 as he passed away.

There is so much more to the final. Germanys player kramer who was not at all a starter started in this match and played with a head injury he got early in the game. He didnt know where he was and what game he played in. He got known as the player who forgot the WC final. Then the Penalty that many wanted for neuer clearing the ball and also higuain. Schweinsteiger was bleeding and played untill the end, and he played the dirtiest football I have ever seen. Messi getting also the chance for a freekick right before the end and kicks it out of the stadium.
