Hi, Im portuguese and didnt know at Portugal footbal history, really enjoyed the video. As portuguese Im happy that other nations are more aware of us. But just want add some info. Cr7 injury wasnt an accident, Payet was triyng it from the start, it was a game plan. They played dirty because they were afraid, serves damn right. Just because of that we have saying, E foi o Eder que os fodeu. In Portugal he had its spotlight on tv sport shows. Apreciate your hard work I really like it, and was all emotional when you show Eder scoring, it makes us cry no matter how much we see it.
Santos will always have the respect and gratitude of Portuguese fans, anyone abusing him is out of order for what he achieved in his first years. At the same time, the football and results declined massively from 2018 onwards, when it should have gone to the next level with the amount of talent that came through.
Youre smoking, most portuguese people i know. As im portuguese and literally live in portugal, despise the man, for good reason. He helped us win a euro, sure thats amazing. But how terrible we were since is almost unforgivable. Prime ronaldo, bernado silva, bruno fernandes, i mean i could go on, and our results are consistently lackluster.
I watched the game at work. I'm a nurse. It was an afternoon shift that ended at 9 pm. We all ordered take out, some beers and we stayed there, in our nursinf uniforms watching the game. It was one of the happiest days of my life. The game ended, and I worked in Montijo (south bank of the Tejo River). I took my car, crossed Vasco da Gama Bridge (18km) in like 10 min, parked the car near the subway, took a subway downtown and celebrated with everyone all night. The next day I was working again but I couldn't care less. Memorable. Unforgettable. Major bucket list goal checked out. After Euro 2004, I never thought this could happen to us. One of the most beautiful and happy days of my 34 going on 35 years! ❤

I remember watching this match back in the day with my old lady, now my mom did not give a rats care about football but for some reason, she just decided to support Portugal cause I was supporting them. If only I realized then how precious those moments were. The 2016 Euros were just "you had to be there moment".
To be fair or Éder when he played in the portuguese league he was known for scoring a lot of goals like these, seemingly little chance or reason to go for a goal, or whenever everyone was expecting him to slow the pace and hold possession, he'd just go for a goal and score. I think he used his strength and balance well in all the goals I've witnessed, that's why he is in the national team. A valuable target man up front that can keep the ball and get you a goal on a seemingly dead play. Sadly his not so consistent form didn't let him have an accomplished career as a national team player but he was one of my favorite players.
1x Euro, 1x Nations League, 2nd place in euro 04, 3rd place in 66 WC, 3rd Place in Confederations Cup, 4th place in 06 World Cup. It's a so far decent resume for Portugal and most of it was built after 2000.
I feel like them winning this Euros ended up being a blessing and curse for them. Coz it meant they couldn't sack Santos but it was still on the other side a fantastic achievement especially coz most people thought that France team had it in the bag. And to do it with just winning 1 game in 90 only adds to it. They had to sweat for every victory. But ultimately I'm sure they won't mind coz they had a generation that should have won Euro 04 so the 16 team was making up for lost time. Great watch as always bro 🫡🙏🏿👊🏿
@@oldskoolmusicnostalgia Yep 💯 that's why I was laughing that it for sure felt like they were making up lost time especially that 04 team that team falls into the category of great teams to not win something. Very hilarious how football can be funny sometimes coz the 16 team is easily the least talented from those sides (00, 04, 06, 16) but the one that managed to get it over the line 😂👊🏿
Great video!!! Will never forget that evening when we won the euro! All Portugal was partying all night!!! When Eder Scored, in my city we could only listen to crazy celebrations at the balconies and inside people's houses! It was Crazy!!!!

With all the lazy content in Football TH-cam being really superficial, this was a breath of fresh air and exactly what I wanted from such a topic. Even teaching me new fascinating things that I never knew of and still condensed in a manageable amount of time. Well done!!!
Absolutely loved this story!! Such a great video. It reminds me of the last Euro winners. Very few people expected Italy to win but they were the dark horse of the tournament. This tournament brings out the best in even the "lowest-rated" teams. I'm excited about what Euro 2024 will bring.
The biggest thing I think nobody talks about is that in the 3-3 draw versus Hungary in the last minute a Hungarian player called Elek Ákos hit the goal post, if he scored there then Portugal lose the game and will be eliminated in the group stage. It was so close and it would change a lot in recent football history
I think seeing this 2016 Portugal side as one that would simply frustrate the opponent is seriously underselling it. At some point you have to commend the strong defensive play the team showed. The defensive organization shown by players like Pepe (who was probably the best player in the whole tournament), Fonte, Guerreiro and even an ageing Ricardo Carvalho was something beautiful to behold at times. As a portuguese myself, yes, it's not as flashy as the Euro 2004 team. But we were sick of getting eliminated while playing attacking football, making an effort to take 20+ shots per match. I'll take the 2016 win any day. For my money, we *were* the best team in pretty much every match we played, because most of the time, the team was in control of the match even if it didn't have possession.
Why is everybody talking about that they didn‘t win a match in regular time, why is not everybody talking about that they didn‘t lost a obligatory match since santos took over???
Football Iconic dropping video just as i was looking for something to watch while eating. My man always coming clutch 🔥🔥😪. Great video as always. Keep up the incredible work❤
Cédric Soares is still cashing checks with Stan Kroenke's signature on em on the back of this one tournament eight years ago, you simply love to see it
As a portuguese person, this had the be one of the greatest day in my life! A day that i never saw coming , and when it did i counldnt believe it. Thank you for revisiting this day, this truly made me happy . And please always remember: " E foi o Éder que os fudeu !"
We still don’t understand how we won this, the fact that Rui patricio and Pepe were our best 2 players in this competition shows how awful our football was, luckily after an awful group stage finishing third got us on the easiest side of the knockouts and then the final was history, gett dominated by a much better french side and somehow the striker who never scored was very contested how he got called up ended up scoring the most important goal in our history. Patricio Pepe and Eder our heroes of 2016🇵🇹🏆
Worth noting that there were a big mistakes in this video. The inaugural edition of Euro is taking place in 1960 (not 1958). Portugal lost 3-7 on aggregate during the 1950 World Cup qualifiers. During the 1966 World Cup, Portugal had a 100% record in group stage, winning all 3 group games, including a 3-1 win over Brazil (they didn't draw), while Eusebio scored a quattrick for the country in a 5-3 comeback win over North Korea (not a hattrick). Finally, Portugal also won the U-20 World Cups in 1989 and 1991, which featured key players for the golden generation team (Luis Figo and Rui Costa, particularly). They also played in Euro 1996, going unbeaten in the group stage, including a 3-0 win over eventual 1998 World Cup third place Croatia, before narrowly losing to Karel Poborsky's iconic banger in the quarterfinal against Czechia.
Great video, that only things I’d add would be Fernando santo’s first interview as the national team manager. He said “We’re going to win the euros” and the whole country laughed at him. The other thing would probably be to dive a bit deeper about Eder. He was an excellent striker in his early days and was meant to be a serious contender for the ST spot. He suffered from a nasty knee injury very young and that side-tracked his career. Was never the same player since but he was kept around because of his quality pre injury
I remember watching the final. I had eye surgery some weeks before os my eyes were very sore. But i was feeling so nervous i had to take a sedative cause i was feeling my eyes popping with my high and pulsating heart rate. Man, when i saw Ronaldo cry i knew the team would leave their skin on the pitch to play for him. I knew that and they did it.
Another aspect of the group stage is that the three draws nearly would have been enough to finish second in the group. When the game against Hungary finished the result in the parallel game Austria Iceland was one one. If it had stayed like this Portugal would have finished second which would have meant they would have met England in the round of last sixteen, France in the quarterfinals and Germany in the semis. After watching the Portuguese game I changed to the other game thinking: If one of the teams scores and Portugal drops to third it might be possible to reach he final. I celebrated Iceland's last minute winner almost as much as the Portuguese goals.
You forgot some homework sir, forgot to mention that William Carvalho, Joao Mario and Adrien Silva they all played for the same club back then, Sporting clube de Portugal and their routine was crucial in order to accomplish this feat :)
Great video! I think you're forgetting one important reason for Eder's goal. Only a few minutes before the goal, Koscielny got a yellow card for a hand ball. To me, it much looked like Koscielny let go on purpose to avoid a second yellow, probably not believing Eder would shoot from so far out.
And funnily enough, that handball was wrongly attributed to Koscielny, as of all people, Eder was the one to have commited the handball. It happened roughly around a 1 minute and 30 seconds before his goal.

Thanks very much for the video! All those dirty tricks when ENG and MEX hosted. I’m sure glad nobody does those things anymore …
Funniest thing about that final match was Cristiano Ronaldo basically acting like a second coach, yelling orders at his teammates after he was injured.

@2:00 ☝🤓 Argentina actually has 11, if you count Messi (8), Di Stefano (2) and Omar Sívori (1). The latter two are often counted as Spanish and Italian respectively due to their double nationality (only reason they were allowed to qualify, as only "Europeans" could win the award at the time).
The 2004 team was ridiculous but I think that now Portugal has an even better side. Diogo Costa, Inácio, António Silva, Nuno Mendes, Cancelo, Ruben Dias, Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes, Jota, Félix, Gonçalo Ramos, Matheus Nunes, Palhinha, Dalot, João Neves, Vitinha, Leão, Guerreiro... even the aging Pepe and Ronaldo. Top players.
they are a pretty good team, don't get me wrong, but I don't think they are on par with the massive generation we had back then in 2004, Deco, Rui Costa, Luis Figo, Ricardo Carvalho, Ricardo (the goalkeeper), Maniche, Petit, Simão Sabrosa (when he was actually good), Pauleta, Nuno Gomes and more, our midfield and offense was STACKED and defense wasn't that lacking either.
I remember that Final. After Payet injured Ronaldo, all of my friends were pissed off and we were wondering if this was the end of the Portuguese fairy tale run. And then out of nowhere, Eder steps up, shoots a shot outside the penalty box and underneath Umtiti and wins it for Portugal and Ronaldo ❤😂
Srill my favorite championship run. My cousin is french and was so unbearable about the team in 2016. Add to that i was Ronaldo fan and the victory was so sweet and tasty
Little heads up on pronunciation of Portuguese and Spanish my friend: The double LL in Spanish sounds like the Y in English: Saltillo = "Saltiyo" And the Ç in Portuguese sounds like an S: Seleção = "Selesao" The double RR in Portuguese sounds like a strong H = Guerreiro = GueHeiro And in both languages the E at the end is loud, just like it is in Italian: Fonte = FontEH, Bosque = BoskEH, Conte = ContEH
Heads up on pronunciation by a portuguese, just minor corrections The "ç" sounds like a double SS like in maSSive, preSSing and also the "E" is most of the times close mouth sound like "uh"(has a logic but no details needed for now) and open mouth sound like the "A" in pAssive Ão sound is hard so it's ok to say it like that So Seleção = Suhlassao Double RR is the French R, where you have to use the part of the throat that makes sound when they snore, so you go Guerreiro= Gue(snore)eiro In portuguese, we DON'T say the final E in the words, it was right the pronunciation of the player named José Fonte. In Spanish is different yes
Go to the translater of google, hearing the bot will help you. As well of learning any language... you get to see how to pronounce and obviously to get to see the translations of words you struggle to remember.
I'm portuguese and even I expected Portugal to get fragged after the group phase. When we beat France I just took it as karmic justice for the loss against Greece in the 2004 final match.
I was 12 at the time and as a big hungarian fan i couldn’t understand how we were knocked out so early when we drew the eventual champions. Had no idea what a group stage was lol :3
The day after I couldn't believe what had happened the night before. But it wasn't that we had won, I couldn't believe that it was Éder who scored, something that many said would happen before the game in a joking way, but that actually came true and is still the single most important goal in our long footballing history. Éder may have faded from sports headlines, but he is still revered here, Lord Éder forever and ever.
We will never forget how Éder scored on the french and how the portuguese flag wasn't shown on the eiffel tower like it was supposed to, in fact they showed the french flag. Then they made a petition to repeat the final which didn't happen. Lost all respect for the french that day.

The information this man digs through to make a quality video is insane you go back to 1930 to make a football video, respect ❤
2016 KO football Cedric was one of the strangest phenomenons in the sport's history
He waited his whole career to cook, did for 4 games and was never that good again
Yeah he's probably the best definition of an average player

I remember watching this match back in the day with my old lady, now my mom did not give a rats care about football but for some reason, she just decided to support Portugal cause I was supporting them. If only I realized then how precious those moments were. The 2016 Euros were just "you had to be there moment".
As an Icelander, I approve ❤
I appreciate the research you put into this and your other videos, and the great storytelling. It was really a wild Euro win for Portugal.
Thanks!😇🤗😁 Youre AWESOME!!! KEEP IT UP!!!
Appreciate that a lot! Thank you !

It was maybe not entirely deserved in 2016 but when you think of Portugal's tournament runs in 2000, 2004 and 2006, I do feel fate owed them one.
Bro I love the consistency in your videomentaries. I'm emotional rn coz I used to watch your vids with my girlfriend back in 2020. Your vids were part of our downtime. She's not here anymore but the momeries live on. Thank you for your contribution in our story.

So sorry to hear about that, man. Hope you’re doing well.
You are amazing man, great video! Cheers from a portuguese subscriber
Cheers man!
With all the lazy content in Football TH-cam being really superficial, this was a breath of fresh air and exactly what I wanted from such a topic. Even teaching me new fascinating things that I never knew of and still condensed in a manageable amount of time. Well done!!!
Ironically, France’s Antoine Griezmann also has Portuguese blood on his momma’s side
Love your story telling mate, favourite football TH-camr on here
As a Portuguese I give you mass respect absolutely loved your video and analysis.
Why do i have to relive this? Im ethnically Croatian. I very much remember this tournament.

As someone who was on holiday in Budapest during Hungary's insane 2016 run I would love love to see a video about how magical that was.
As a portuguese person, this had the be one of the greatest day in my life! A day that i never saw coming , and when it did i counldnt believe it. Thank you for revisiting this day, this truly made me happy . And please always remember: " E foi o Éder que os fudeu !"
Excellent video, Portugal is a top team in football, futsal, beach football, roller hockey, etc etc
In a popular street in my town there are two pretty big "official" graffiti art pieces, one of them is Ronaldo, the other is Eder
Amazing piece man! Always appreciate the depth of knowledge shared in these videos. Keep it up!
I celebrated Iceland's last minute winner almost as much as the Portuguese goals.
top video needed this after the breakup fr thanks brotha 😊
You forgot some homework sir, forgot to mention that William Carvalho, Joao Mario and Adrien Silva they all played for the same club back then, Sporting clube de Portugal and their routine was crucial in order to accomplish this feat :)
A very, very well done summary of the history of the Portuguese national team ❤
Great video! I think you're forgetting one important reason for Eder's goal. Only a few minutes before the goal, Koscielny got a yellow card for a hand ball. To me, it much looked like Koscielny let go on purpose to avoid a second yellow, probably not believing Eder would shoot from so far out.
And funnily enough, that handball was wrongly attributed to Koscielny, as of all people, Eder was the one to have commited the handball. It happened roughly around a 1 minute and 30 seconds before his goal.
Excellent Hard Work 🍷 hopefully 2024 Will be Portugal Year again 🏆🍷🇵🇹

@@l0c0k0k0fun fact even if messi won those tournaments still would’ve gone on bcs those tournaments were already scheduled a decade ago u really don’t know how international tournaments u don’t js give international tournaments out hs for the sake of it u gotta announce it before hand to give the host country time to prepare for it ffs u don’t give euros, copa america, and a wc with 3 years to go u js can’t bcs stadiums have to be built, others remodeled and that takes time in the recent wc the stadiums were still being built months before the wc started
I remember I screamed so loudly that I woke up the neighborhood 😂. Eder's banger was just unexpected.❤

As portuguese, i praise your video. Fair and square! Thank you!
I remember thinking of course France was gonna win that 2016 final (“home field advantage”) and I didn’t even wanna bother watching it so I didn’t. Well that taught me a lesson.
Thanks very much for the video! All those dirty tricks when ENG and MEX hosted. I’m sure glad nobody does those things anymore …

Awesome content. Thanks so much.
The 66 championship was cooked for England.
Portugal was harmed by the change of stadium and in the game.
AMAZING deep dive into Portugal 2016. Thank you ❤️❤️❤️💪💪💪
imagine in 2024 portugal and argentina win continental competitions again
I still remember that game. What a game. And the goal scored by the least expected player 😃
The way you dictate situations is amazing to listen to.
Funniest thing about that final match was Cristiano Ronaldo basically acting like a second coach, yelling orders at his teammates after he was injured.
tbqh id like cris better as coach now but hes rather off be staying out the pitch with this poor performance all due respcect for his legacy he's my goat in the end of the day... 🐐(still mirin him though quite objecitvely my guy fell off grace this time its over☹)
@2:00 ☝🤓 Argentina actually has 11, if you count Messi (8), Di Stefano (2) and Omar Sívori (1).
Awesome video. I’m looking forward to this years Euro
Srill my favorite championship run. My cousin is french and was so unbearable about the team in 2016. Add to that i was Ronaldo fan and the victory was so sweet and tasty
This channel is ICONIC.
Little heads up on pronunciation of Portuguese and Spanish my friend:
The double LL in Spanish sounds like the Y in English: Saltillo = "Saltiyo"
And the Ç in Portuguese sounds like an S: Seleção = "Selesao"
The double RR in Portuguese sounds like a strong H = Guerreiro = GueHeiro
And in both languages the E at the end is loud, just like it is in Italian: Fonte = FontEH, Bosque = BoskEH, Conte = ContEH
Thanks! Will do better next time !
Heads up on pronunciation by a portuguese, just minor corrections
The "ç" sounds like a double SS like in maSSive, preSSing and also the "E" is most of the times close mouth sound like "uh"(has a logic but no details needed for now) and open mouth sound like the "A" in pAssive
Ão sound is hard so it's ok to say it like that
So Seleção = Suhlassao
Double RR is the French R, where you have to use the part of the throat that makes sound when they snore, so you go Guerreiro= Gue(snore)eiro
In portuguese, we DON'T say the final E in the words, it was right the pronunciation of the player named José Fonte. In Spanish is different yes
In brasilian portuguese the final E sound might be even close to the English "E" and is not silent like Portugal's portuguese
Go to the translater of google, hearing the bot will help you. As well of learning any language... you get to see how to pronounce and obviously to get to see the translations of words you struggle to remember.
Thankyou for this video ❤️
Need more of these please
We need more videos like this for "other"(all) national teams.😉
@footballiconic Portugal won against Brasil in 1966 group stage. 3-1 I guess, 2 from Eusebio.
Pele went out injured in the middle of the game.
I was hoping for FIFA 2022 to finish with Argentina vs Portugal... Can believe how hard Portugal fumbled
as a Croat, 2016 hurt more then World cup final and Nations league final. i would put 2008 to agaisnt turkey but i was too young to remember
Portugal should not have lost to Greece in 2004 either… its football, so if it happened then it means Portugal is European Champion fair and square.
We will never forget how Éder scored on the french and how the portuguese flag wasn't shown on the eiffel tower like it was supposed to, in fact they showed the french flag.
Then they made a petition to repeat the final which didn't happen.
Lost all respect for the french that day.
Hi I'm french and I'm still in pain because of this game
Man love your videos!
