The birth of the first settlement on today's Arpinian territory can be traced back to the Volsci. However, dating is difficult. Some scholars fix its birth around the 7th-6th century. BC, others, however, around the middle of the 4th century. B.C. Beyond Arpino there are several cities founded in the Ciociaria area by this ancient population.
That of the Volsci was a population that lived above all on agriculture and pastoralism, but it was also very warlike. The wars with Rome are proof of this. The choice to build the first settlement on such high ground was due to defensive objectives. In fact, that of the Volsci was not the only population in central Italy and Marsi and Sanniti were among the most dangerous. It is for this reason that huge cyclopean (or polygonal) walls were erected to defend what would become Civitavecchia di Arpino, still visible today.
    𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝘆𝗴𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀
The walls of the Acropolis of Arpino are made up of large irregularly shaped boulders wedged together without foundations. About half of the original total of 3 km in length is still visible today. Probably the fact that the inhabited center has developed in part far from the walls has allowed its conservation. Over the centuries, the settlement has undergone changes: one of these was the construction of the square-based tower that stands out over the neighboring area. Its function was defensive and is known as 'Cicero's Tower'. It seems, in fact, that the famous orator's family lived inside the acropolis.
    𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵
4.20 meters high, the pointed arch of Arpino is also formed by superimposed monoliths that narrow towards the top. In ancient times it was one of the main access gates to.....

WOW! My mind just wandered walking here with you. All the questions that came to mind: What was it like in the past, how did the people live etc. I suppose all the inhabitants living there now live in the new buildings and all those huge stone houses are mostly boarded up. Such beautiful views of the area. And everywhere you go there is some ancient wall, tower.....
I also wonder if some of the cats living in these areas are descended from ancient cats as well🤔 sorry, as I said, my mind started to wander..... thanks for another great video☺️

Dear Geraldine, I have often the same perceptions as well in those old towns, especially when there aren't many tourists around. To think the walls were built hundreds of years ago... and to think of who passed under those gates as well, makes one wonder. There was a very cute cat under the tower, I couldnt' film her because I was changing the battery, she was sunbathing in the middle of that big harden near a tree... lucky I thought!

The sad, very sad thing, is that everytime I upload such a video, they get so very few views and the channel altogether is in a way "punished" by the mighty TH-cam Algoryithm :( It's a real real shame and everytime I get a sad outcome out of this, but... I'm just glad there are indeed people who enjoy unknown towns like these like me, and not only the big names and the shining paths. They are cool too of course, but the idea for this channel was to show unusual places too! Glad you like them as me anyway. Indeed.. after the walk, I walked a little more to be honest, without recording, just around without camera with my backpack.. so quiet environemtn, such a peaceful place... I loved it immensely to be honest.
I'll show more unusual towns for sure. This evening I upload again a new version of the first video I uploaded here in the channel, the beautiful town of Sperlonga. It will be nice to compare what the difference have been in 2 years, more like an experiment I guess)

Beautiful as always. I think you're my favorite walker by now! May I ask if you are still using the Osmo Pocket 2, as you were back in your Civita di Bagnoregio walk when I inquired? As a keen observer of walking videos, including my own, I see very little bobbing up and down in this one, which is the enemy of all walking videos! We really feel like we are gliding along each incredible street. Would you mind updating me on the gear you used for this particular one, especially your gimbal or z-axis stabilizer? Is this gopro or Osmo? And how did you keep it so smooth? Keep it up! You can read this and other comments and you can clearly see how much you are a part of peoples' lives. They sit back with a fresh cup of coffee or a glass of wine and just drift back through time. You are extraordinary.

Yes, still use the DJI Pocket 2, quite a beast... I updated my setup though, I custom-made many modifications (added a 1/4 socket on the back of the axis one to attach the external mic, so it's more comfortable as it's balanced with weight back and front, added a piece from another x axis, added many other features, also added weight... it would be too long to explain. Every time I try to modify a bit, after 2 years I've almost reached the ideal setup, though not the perfect...write me an email, I'll explain)) Have a nice weekend!

How long does it take to travel from Rome to this town or vice versa

    • @StillWanderer
      @StillWanderer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Jessica, surely only by car up there, as I didn't see any public transporttation (maybe there are! But...). I guess that from Rome it takes about 1 hr and 30 minutes driving!
