- Bill K0WHW joined me for this VERY EARLY activation of Lone Mountain Summits on the Air. This was the first day of summer bonus points, and the first time I was able to meet Bill.
Bill brought is LAB599 TX-500 along and I got an opportunity to operate with it a little. But honestly, VHF contacts stole the show on this activation. We both had our points in 1-2 minutes on VHF.
Bill has an excellent TH-cam channel called Ham Radio Tectonics:

Great to watch your dawn activation and hi to Bill (like the Indiana Jones look) admirers of both channels. 73 de M0AZE Mike
Hi Mike and thank you so much for your support. I was looking at your QRZ page. The Air Cadets thing sounds interesting... and what is a cobweb antenna?
Good video Charlie and a very enjoyable activation with Bill. Decent weather too and nice views. Well done qualifying the summit on 2m FM. Keep up the good work.

Hi Chris, my friend! Thank you. I hope things are well. It's been a couple months since you've released a video. You must be busy with summer vacations.
@@RedSummitRF Hope all is well with you & Sandy. Natalie & I just had a week in the Lake District. We activated four SOTA but I didn’t make any video. I must try harder!!!

Great job! Dan took me up there in January. It was my first SOTA activation. Nice hike.
Oh yeah, It's a nice hike in January. Not bad now too if you are early. So I suppose you could relate to this video more than the others with the context you had, being up there before?
@@RedSummitRF for sure. It rained us off the mountain. We didn't want to hike down a slippery unsafe trail. We definitely think about sure footing the older we get. I had 14 CW contacts that day. I had to leave a pile up to get down before the trail became hazardous.
Wow.. What a view.. We don't have views like that here in Iowa, LOL... Bill was busy taking all those calls.. Good job Bill.. Nice YT channel by the way.. Thanks for sharing your adventure guys ! !. k0klb
Hi Kevin - Iowa is unique and has different beautiful things. Yes, it gets busy on these morning SOTA events. It's fun. Your channel is great to! Love it. Thanks for the visit.
great video Charlie and Bill nice to see the activation in both modes and looks like I missed you again, keep checking SOTA page. but we keep passing like two ships in the night. but some day we'll hook up on cw Charlie Tnx agn de Ellis WA1RKS
Thanks for your determination and for your consistent support, Ellis.
Fun activation! I've been focusing on HF lately, but boy VHF is a lot of fun when there's a ton of action! 73 de Tim N7KOM
You are the VHF OG! As you saw from the Slack comment, I tried chasing you on HF today. Just not enough propagate umph. Thanks Tim.
@@RedSummitRF Trying to make Thursday mornings a SOTA day. Two weeks in a row, let's see how long I last 😅
@@N7KOM great idea! It's a good day for me too, but as you know I have to be up on the hill by 1300 and can't be up there for long. So probably no S2S in the future unless we coordinate something. Good luck spearheading "Thursday SOTA"
Charlie, I bought one of those TX-500 radios earlier this year (it was an ordeal to get it here from Sweden). It is taking me a bit to get used to it. I turned up the monitor volume for CW operations so I could hear my sidetone.
I love the display! The CWSpeed setting is odd, I think it is in characters per minute, not WPM as we are accustomed to. I find that 100 or so works for me.
I think an external speaker would be an advantage over the speaker/mike. An adapter from the DIN connector to a speaker is available and a small speaker would be great.
I like the radio. OH8STN really likes this radio for digital modes. It is a beast coupled with the PA500 and is current efficient.
Great to see you with another ham on the mountains. Did Bill catch the SOTA bug?
Hi David - thank you for your comments. Yes, I hear they are hard to purchase. Especially now with the war. OH8STN has great content. And yes, Bill is enjoying SOTA. I don't believe this was his first activation. 73
Great job Charlie and nice to see Bill in action too. Be interested in what his transformer was on the end of that wire.
That was the K6ARK EFHW with the 49:1 transformer. Once he got home and put it on the analyzer the SWR was back to normal. I'm confidant it was something to do with the big rock we were on and how the antenna was deployed that through the SWR out of whack.
Nice work Charlie & Bill! 73 de Jeff K3JRZ
Hi Jeff! Looks like your channel is making progress with number of subs 👍 You have some fun POTA videos. Thank YOU!
@@RedSummitRF Slowly but surely. Thanks Charlie! 73
The 500 is as quiet as the kx2 I think. Looks hot up there
Hi Jeff - another radio knowledge nugget I didn't know about. So that is normal for the 500 huh? Very cool!
I've been tangled a bit. It wasn't as easy for me to put up the dipole with closer trees that are in NC. This desert dweller isn't as used to antennas in forests as others.
oh yes, all the briers of north Georgia gave me fits deploying my antenna.
Is your short antenna for 2m/70cm? Make?
I purchased it off of Aliexpress years ago. It was discontinued from there and I have not found much that is similar since. This is about as close as you'll get but I don't have this antenna and haven't used it: www.americanradiosupply.com/hr-601vu-bnc-vhf-uhf-dual-band-portable-ham-radio-ht-antenna/?gclid=CjwKCAiAzp6eBhByEiwA_gGq5FnkXfr27g1aOI7Oglxa8-RxEEDdnjGkZ3cu-a0jvt8y8hZ4uUwephoCpioQAvD_BwE
You call those little dumplings summits? Come on out to British Columbia...I'll show you real summits. 😉
Just kidding...nice video. Ivan VE7IVN
Hahaha! Hi Ivan. There's actually truth to your funny statement. I would love to join you for a "real" SOTA experience in BC sometime. But not sure I'll ever make it up there. Thanks for the note.
nice charlie thanks 73 VE7JYD
