At first I regretted getting the 3.0 over the famous 22re but I have to say I've really gotten to love it. And the "three point slow" joke never gets old.

Love the V6 despite whatever negativity that is thrown at it. It takes me from point A to B.

@@donsale6301 if anyone has a 3.0 v6 Toyota engine, remove the rear crossover pipe for the exhaust. this causes extra heat on the rear valve/head cover gaskets. I had a 1995 Toyota 4runner SR5 5 speed with the 3.0, had that problem and then removed the crossover pipe i mentioned, problem solved.

I'm on my 3rd 2nd gen and I've grown to appreciate the 3.0, she's a very capable vehicle... Two of my 2nd gen 4runners are getting close to hitting 300,000... I only drive manual and haven't played with the automatics...

Nice video of comparisons! I have a 1985 Toyota 4runner SR5 5 speed with the 22re and sits on 35's with 5:29 gearing, gets 22mpg using pure gasoline not E10.

So...the 22R/E rear differential was not stronger than the turbo/V6 differential. The 22R-E differential was a 2 pinion carrier and the turbo/V6 was a 4 pinion with a bigger pinion bearing. Both use an 8 " ring gear and are interchangeable, that's why you see the turbo/V6 differential swapped out in the 22R/E trucks. You can tell on the outside, 22R/E differential having 3 horizontal gussets and the turbo/V6 differential having 4.

The v6 unfortunately, eventually will have back side coolant hose failure. It’s a pain in the arse. I know. Happened with my 94. My 86, 22re won’t have that issue. Of course, being a vintage 4runner guy, I dropped the 2000$ to fix the 94 plus valve cover seals while was in that area. Keep them both, I’ve got 3

Great breakdown brother. I'm in N. Idaho so possibly not too far away from you.
I've had my 1986 EFI SR5 4Runner for many years now and it is still one of my favorite trucks to drive around and will, hopefully, be one of the last vehicles I will ever sell. It spends most of it's time locked up in a garage to preserver it as much as possibly but I appreciate the comparison. Especially the V6 vs. 4 cyl. Mine is a standard manual transmission but I do also have a 1995 Land Cruiser that it an automatic which I love for daily driving. Both have over 250K miles so it's only a matter of time before time catches up with them. The Land Cruiser only ever gets from 10 to 12 MPG because it is full time 4WD but it is literally built like a tank from the factory so it has it's pro's and cons in that respect.
Again, great breakdown my man. Maybe I'll do one in the future.

Thanks for your time and watching the video! Definitely my favorite vintage truck so far. You got a sweet stable with the 80 series as well. I love land cruisers as well and have a 2001 100 series which I love, but you're right, the MPG is the only downside with current gas prices. Thanks again! Cheers 😊🙏

That 89 is a crossover year. Probably the reason for the quieter cabin. They added more noise Insulation in the fifth generation Toyota pickup although the 4runner kept the classic body style up until I think 91

All I can say is anyone who had a v6, there is a catalytic converter on 1 Bank behind the motor seriously kills power and fuel economy. 500 tho and still does 140 with 33s in the Canadian mountains np
