Probably the most unique drummer I've heard, yet he _never_ loses the groove. Every song, he's trying to be original. He never does what a _proper_ rock drummer would do. He's a big reason why the Police were gods of the punk/new-wave era.
The Police--such an amazing combination of rock, reggae, and pop. Disbanded when ranked the #1 band in the world at the time. Nothing like going out on top.

The lyrics are mostly a series of vignettes of moments of intense suffering and a lament about how he’s cursed to hyper-empathizes with them, so I could certainly see that.

I think it's more of the opposite, where it's a man who sees all of this negative stuff but feels nothing himself, maybe even actually relishing in it.
He explained what the song was written about, but the listener can project whatever they want. He was into psychology, reading up on mental workings, and symbolism, but he also went through a painful divorce, so he attached himself to a bunch of painful symbols in poetic form. In an interview around the album's release, he also talked about his father and a painful childhood.

Sting has always been the voice of the more educated listener. During the time of this recording he was relating to the large group of college students who were and are asking age old questions.
Lyrically stellar, hauntingly beautiful, one of my two top Police songs, along with Invisible Sun. Artistically unparalleled, THE supergroup of the 1980's.
They did the perfect amount of albums. If they kept pumping them out into the 90's I don't know if they have the same popularity. They didn't release a bad album, not too many bands can say that.

Brilliant band, amazing song. The lyrics are so powerful. The Police are one of my favorite bands of all time. You can listen to any of their songs throughout the evolution of the band and it's all good music.

I was blessed to hear them live in concert when they did their reunion tour. It was in an outdoor stadium during a summer night - was amazing - they are amazing. Seeing Sting live is also a gift to the soul I will never forget.

I mentioned in one of your other police reaction videos that I was obsessed with them growing up I was in my tween and teen years when the police were out because I was born in 1970 I had their posters all over my room they were a big deal to me as they were to millions of others! Every song they have done is freaking unbelievable, but this is my absolute favorite
I listened to a Columbus, Ohio station in the mornings way back then and they had a parody of this song. I miss and loved it because it was made about an older sportscaster. He wore plaid jackets. The parody was, "The King of Plaid". Jimmy Crumb was the sportscaster. I am sure jimmy is in the next world now because he was older back then. I have a soft place in my heart and an appreciation for this song, the parody and also for Jimmy :)
This entire album speaks volumes to me, since it came out in my teen years. Even the more jazz-oriented songs, like Tea In The Sahara, are understated and deep with meaning.
The key to the song is “I’m always hoping you will end this reign”. Declaring that it doesn’t have to be this way that there is this much suffering in the world. For a while, he did sing the lyric as “I always hoped that you would end this reign”. As if saying, but we know it’ll never change.
Sting and his wife are out walking on the beach...she is exuberant...it's a beautiful day....she turns to Sting to relate her feelings...and sees his face....and says...."Oh, you're the King of Pain today"

This song was a radio mainstay during the 80's. Their last album together as a band and it was a masterpiece. Sting also went on to a very successful solo career.

I have seen The Police as they reunited for "final" tour back in 2008. Stop was at an amphitheater in West Palm Beach. It was May 17, 2008. I have original ticket. 3 and 1/2 hours of music, The Police rocked!

I have been a devoted Police/Sting fan forever. When I heard-- King of Pain, I guess I'm always hoping that you'll end this reign, It spoke to me. Take this crown, I will give it up gladly. I had the financial misfortune of working right my a used CD shop so ALL my money went to Police and Sting CD's and imports. No internet for me. I had to save up $34 for a USED Sting Japanese import that only had 1 song on it I hadn't collected. I actually got to go to 2 concerts, and was supposed to meet him, there was a whole thing, and they had to reschedule, which meant I had to drive alone from Hartford CT where I had just moved a few months earlier, and I just remember it was somewhere around the Bridgeport area, and no one could go with me. 2 free tickets and an invitation to watch them warm up and meet Sting. (this was in 99, so definitely Sting) I was actually petrified and nearly turned around twice. But I would never have a chance like this ever again. I have my autographed CD in a lead lined vault somewhere with my Leather bound Lord of the Rings and other odds and precious ends. I was stupefied, of course, and far too shy to even make contact. I was about 8 shades of red, and had no one with me to sort of be cool with. I had no Patsy to my Edina if there are any AbFab fans out there. But he was very kind, and thanked me for a donation I had made that won me the prize. I told him that I became a fan of the Police when I was about 8, I was born in '72, and that it was his poetry that absolutely slayed me. He put me on the spot. Uh huh. But I am a hardcore fan. My Favorite of his solo albums at the time was Soul Cages, and it dealt with death, and mortality and specifically the death of Sting's father, a milkman, working class, to Sting's being first a teacher and then musician and they had a fraught relationship. Another of my favorite singer/songwriters, Tom Petty also had a tough relationship with his dad, who, he called a mean bastard that liked to drink and beat on him. And it's probably where Tom got that F You attitude from. Imagine all the music we would have lost if people had been good parents? Anyway, Sting asked if I had a favorite lyric, and I said yes, many, actually, but at that moment what came to mind was: Men go crazy in congregations, They only get better one by one. It's a line from a song called All This Time. He started to tell me about it, but there was this whole concert coming up, so I said, you were born near my mother, only five months after her. Our families might have known each other. And I told him that story, because part of the songs from The Soul Cages LP were about seeing the huge ships built on the river Tyne and be launched out, never to return. It's the same place my whole family lived for generations. The other song I loved was one I could have never talked about with him. The other was Fortress Around your Heart -- And if I built this fortress around your heart Encircled you in trenches and barbed wire Then let me build a bridge For I cannot fill the chasm And let me set the battlements on fire. Don't just read over it, really take in all that meaning. I love that imagery because it's how I love, and if anyone betrays that love, they will never get inside my walls, I am forever cut off. I didn't say it was healthy or happy, it just resonates. I build up walls. Tom Petty has a song called Walls, that I love too. But his song says, I can't hold out forever, even walls fall down. I love that too. Maybe I want to find someone worthy of bringing my walls down. too much info. I blame Sting, a very kind, incredibly, mouthwateringly, even more handsome in person man who smells amazing.
The production on this is devastating. Only Rush has this kind of production, and they even cited the Police as an influence. Rush is a band without peers, so that is the absolute highest praise.

I was blessed to hear them live in concert when they did their reunion tour. It was in an outdoor stadium during a summer night - was amazing - they are amazing. Seeing Sting live is also a gift to the soul I will never forget.

Seems to me it's about dealing with depression. The refrain it's my soul up there after describing sad things.
King of Pain.... being able to empathize with the suffering of other living beings. I think that's what this song is about.

this is my FAVORITE song by The Police. I mentioned in one of your other police reaction videos that I was obsessed with them growing up I was in my tween and teen years when the police were out because I was born in 1970 I had their posters all over my room they were a big deal to me as they were to millions of others! Every song they have done is freaking unbelievable, but this is my absolute favorite

I listened to a Columbus, Ohio station in the mornings way back then and they had a parody of this song. I miss and loved it because it was made about an older sportscaster.
He wore plaid jackets.

Jimmy Crumb was the sportscaster. I am sure jimmy is in the next world now because he was older back then.

This entire album speaks volumes to me, since it came out in my teen years. Even the more jazz-oriented songs, like Tea In The Sahara, are understated and deep with meaning.
I hope he is done with Bob Seger. Went far too long. Rory Gallagher deserves a much longer run than Bob.

My favorite Police song has alway been "Invisible Sun" it's fairly appropriate for what's going on today in our world.

The key to the song is “I’m always hoping you will end this reign”. Declaring that it doesn’t have to be this way that there is this much suffering in the world. For a while, he did sing the lyric as “I always hoped that you would end this reign”. As if saying, but we know it’ll never change.

This song was a radio mainstay during the 80's. Their last album together as a band and it was a masterpiece. Sting also went on to a very successful solo career.
Now that you've done "King of Pain," now would be a great opportunity to bounce back to Weird Al Yankovic and do "King of Suede." xD

I have seen The Police as they reunited for "final" tour back in 2008. Stop was at an amphitheater in West Palm Beach. It was May 17, 2008. I have original ticket. 3 and 1/2 hours of music, The Police rocked!

In the beginning, that percussion beat is Stewart Copeland, the drummer, on a marimba. Love the counter of it with the keys.
I have been a devoted Police/Sting fan forever. When I heard-- King of Pain, I guess I'm always hoping that you'll end this reign, It spoke to me. Take this crown, I will give it up gladly.
I had the financial misfortune of working right my a used CD shop so ALL my money went to Police and Sting CD's and imports. No internet for me. I had to save up $34 for a USED Sting Japanese import that only had 1 song on it I hadn't collected. I actually got to go to 2 concerts, and was supposed to meet him, there was a whole thing, and they had to reschedule, which meant I had to drive alone from Hartford CT where I had just moved a few months earlier, and I just remember it was somewhere around the Bridgeport area, and no one could go with me. 2 free tickets and an invitation to watch them warm up and meet Sting. (this was in 99, so definitely Sting) I was actually petrified and nearly turned around twice. But I would never have a chance like this ever again. I have my autographed CD in a lead lined vault somewhere with my Leather bound Lord of the Rings and other odds and precious ends.
I was stupefied, of course, and far too shy to even make contact. I was about 8 shades of red, and had no one with me to sort of be cool with. I had no Patsy to my Edina if there are any AbFab fans out there. But he was very kind, and thanked me for a donation I had made that won me the prize. I told him that I became a fan of the Police when I was about 8, I was born in '72, and that it was his poetry that absolutely slayed me.
He put me on the spot. Uh huh. But I am a hardcore fan. My Favorite of his solo albums at the time was Soul Cages, and it dealt with death, and mortality and specifically the death of Sting's father, a milkman, working class, to Sting's being first a teacher and then musician and they had a fraught relationship. Another of my favorite singer/songwriters, Tom Petty also had a tough relationship with his dad, who, he called a mean bastard that liked to drink and beat on him. And it's probably where Tom got that F You attitude from. Imagine all the music we would have lost if people had been good parents?
Anyway, Sting asked if I had a favorite lyric, and I said yes, many, actually, but at that moment what came to mind was:
Men go crazy in congregations, They only get better one by one. It's a line from a song called All This Time. He started to tell me about it, but there was this whole concert coming up, so I said, you were born near my mother, only five months after her. Our families might have known each other. And I told him that story, because part of the songs from The Soul Cages LP were about seeing the huge ships built on the river Tyne and be launched out, never to return. It's the same place my whole family lived for generations.
The other song I loved was one I could have never talked about with him. The other was Fortress Around your Heart --
And if I built this fortress around your heart
Encircled you in trenches and barbed wire Then let me build a bridge
For I cannot fill the chasm And let me set the battlements on fire. Don't just read over it, really take in all that meaning.
I love that imagery because it's how I love, and if anyone betrays that love, they will never get inside my walls, I am forever cut off. I didn't say it was healthy or happy, it just resonates. I build up walls. Tom Petty has a song called Walls, that I love too. But his song says, I can't hold out forever, even walls fall down. I love that too. Maybe I want to find someone worthy of bringing my walls down. too much info. I blame Sting, a very kind, incredibly, mouthwateringly, even more handsome in person man who smells amazing.

The production on this is devastating. Only Rush has this kind of production, and they even cited the Police as an influence.
