HALLELUJAH!!! You're FINALLY getting back to music reactions! It's been wayyy too long. Please don't let the music become secondary on your channel, Jamal. "Keep the music alive", was YOUR mantra for the longest, and I believe you still adhere to that. I love your reactions, and that's why I subscribe. Keep the faith, and keep the MUSIC reactions coming too, brother. Thanks!!! 🤘👍🤘👍🤘👍🤘☝✌
"Caught between Scylla and Charybdis" may be one of the most cerebral lyric in a rock song. It refers to two monsters from Greek mythology and it basically means caught between a rock and a hard place.
As well as the Germanic mythology of Faust selling his soul to the devil Mephistopheles for-knowledge and power. Definitely the obscure genius in this song is Sting's creativity in his lyric writing, as we all know, the accessible genius with all three of those guys use of their instruments is easy for us all to recognize, fortunately.
Sting wrote such brilliant lyrics. There are so many examples of it in their songs. I saw an interview with Stewart Copeland (the brilliant and extremely talented drummer of The Police) who said back in the day, he just played the drums. All these years later, he actually listened to the lyrics of their songs and realized how brilliant Sting really was, when he thought about what it all meant.
I wish Andy Summers received more props for his contribution to this band. Yes, Sting is a Genius and Stewart Copeland is the top in a class of his own... there's no denying that. Andy is incredible and I've always loved his purposeful, delicate strumming and picking. Who else feels me in this?
Fun fact about Andy Summers, he Plays in a project called "Call the Police", actually it's a Brazilian the police cover. They'll play this week in Rio.
The lyrics, “Caught between the Scylla and Charibdes” refers to two mythological monsters that occupied either side of a narrow strait that Odysseus had to pass through. One was a beast with sharp teeth and the other caused whirlpools. Both would mean death for the sailor and his crew. It has become an idiom meaning to choose the lesser of two evils.
This verse is so intriguing to me ever since my first listen to this song in the 80s. And then when the drum beat picks up...a masterpiece! "Devil and the deep blue sea behind me Vanish in the air, you'll never find me I will turn your face to alabaster When you find your servant is your master"
God this album was the best ever! The Police bring back memories of meeting my husband of now 40 years! This album brought us soooo together!! Love the Police❤
Such a mystical feeling to this song…it’s always been my favourite Police song. They managed to get a lot of “space” in their music, their sound created a vast soundscape…loved this Jamel❤️
When this came out, I was a freshman in high school. I had to pull out an encyclopedia, to figure out what he was talking about. You can tell he was an English major😂
The entire construction of the lyrics of this song is masterful poetry. This was the most cerebral that The Police ever were. If they were gonna go out on a bang on their last album, they certainly achieved it. The whole album Syncronicity is a piece of audio perfection, most especially this song. Got more than one copy on vinyl including the rare purple, nearly black version. Had it on cassette and on CD back in the day too.
Lots of layers of meaning to this one. Here is a Sting quote: This song is vaguely alchemical and probably about a friend of mine, a professional psychic and my tutor in tarot, with bits of Doctor Faustus and The Sorcerer's Apprentice thrown into the pot for good measure. - Sting, Lyrics by Sting
Fun Fact: when they made the video, they sped up the song and they sang, played and danced with the speed and then slowed the video to normal speed for viewing.
I'm Surprised we didn't have more mainstream groups/musicians incorporate Reggae into their songs! Sooo Relaxing! Thank You for coming back to Music Reactions Jamal!
40 years 🎂, the song and the album Synchronicity. Written by Sting. Stewart Copeland likes 👍 playing the percussion here, especially live. The problem 🙄 is that he must race from percussion to drum 🥁 kit at each pre-chorus.
One of the most iconic videos of the 80s. Mention "the Police song with the candles" and most will know it (GenX especially). It actually took me a decade to figure out they mainly used reggae beats. How can you not sway to this?
Us younger Boomers were also on top of this song and video from the get-go, only being in our early to mid-twenties, this was my weekend mornings music!
You should look at their live performances of this particular song. The lyrics...say so much in so few words, references to Greek mythology, European folklore..a story of a wizard and his apprentice. Awesome. Cheers
I listened to lots of 70's and 80's heavy metal...then I heard the Police and they opened my mind to different music. I got into playing Classical guitar, a little Jazz and love it all.
The Police...such an awesome sound! Sting went on to have a huge solo career after they broke up. Listen to his "Desert Rose", if you liked this one...a similar vibe! Best luck always! Old Hippie Lady in Upstate NY
Hey, a new Jamel music reaction! Nice. My all time favourite music reaction is one of Jamel's...the one featuring the Winter brothers' live performance of Tobacco Road. Such a joy to watch. Other favourites are to Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald (Gordon Lightfoot), Carry On Wayward Son (Kansas), and Ride Like The Wind (Christopher Cross...that one prompted a shoutout from Mr Cross himself). More!
went to a Sting concert in Thessaloniki Greece some years ago. I was 15. Thank God I always listened to older music and i got to recognize the rest of the Group. they were the police. my friends were no way. they haven;t been together for ages but we later read on the paper that they had all visited thessaloniki to go out and they played together but never advertised it. there were no more than 500 people. amazing experience
Jamel… This is what happened. They did the video and after they thought it was completed Sting hated it. He told everyone to leave except for the cameramen. He added candles and other stuff then redid the video … and what you see is Sting’s version. All of it was done with him and his ideas… enjoy… oh and they didn’t know he was going to knock over the candles… he shocked the hell out of everyone
The police was my favorite band when I was a teenager. I followed sting through his solo career- always will be my favorite singer. So glad you did a music reaction - I have loved watching you do these. Your my favorite! Keep it going ! 😊
Jamel I always love your reactions. I absolutely love this song. The video Always makes Me wonder, Did They get burns From the candle wax making this video? Great song love to hear Sting he has a wonderful voice.❤️✌️🌼
Jamel, you’re almost at 1 MILLION subscribers! Awesome. This was a great reaction. I remembered this song from my college days, of course there wasn’t any slick video back then.
This is a great song, I remember when it first can’t out when in the early 80’s, you should see the rendition that they did for their drummer Stewart Copeland, it will blow you away !!!!
I love this song...one of my favorite Police tunes! I loved that he turned it around on her at the end. This song made me smarter as a teen because I learned so many new words and their meanings! Sting's vocabulary is vast, maybe because he was a teacher in a former life!😂😂 💖💖
You should read about how they got the effect in this video. If I remember correctly, they played the song at a fast speed, and Sting danced around to it. Then they slowed it down to the regular speed and synced it. It’s pretty facinating.
I always enjoy your views on music Mr Jamal. I would find it interesting if you evaluated song lyrics as well, as Stings genius in lyric writing is often obscured by the hypnotic music. I would recommend you look into the lyrics of this song. The references to Greek & medieval mytholog, and how the mythological characters experiences relate to the message of this song, is about as creative as it gets. Lastly, you'll find the message in this song is quite cold and calculated as the 'servant' turns things around on the 'master'. Peace, my brother!
This is great to see Jamel! Hoping this is a sign that things are changing with your block issue. Don't be discouraged by low view count at first as people aren't used to you being able to post music without blocks.
Devil and the deep blue sea behind me Vanish in the air, you'll never find me I will turn your flesh to alabaster Then you'll find your servant is your master!!!
The Police was ANOTHER DYNAMIC TRIO that sounded WAY more like 6 people: AMAZING!!! In your last video I watched, you mentioned the reggae flavor - in their earlier days, they had a LOT of reggae influence! Stewart Copeland is an AMAZING DRUMMER - Andy Summers is a very talented guitarist and, of course: Sting was SUPERB on BASS and played many instruments, actually....SO GLAD to see you enjoying music again!! LOVE YOUR CHANNEL, MAN!!
Thank you for this, this is the Jamel I enjoyed so much... keep doing this, yes I know it's frustrating never knowing if it will be blocked but you'll preserve your humanity and your wonderful catchphrase (Just be a good human) if you work through it. This made me smile 👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌
I love this song ad yes has the reggae feeling to it. The drummer in the video at the time this was recorded reminds me so much of my brother who was amateur musician who played guitar and drums. Many years back, he committed suicide. We never knew the pain he went through but it is always nice to see this video. He loved the Police and Sting as well. Thanks for sharing and yeah....the video is so cool🤗
Arguably the best song on the album. "Every Breath... is completely worn out. The video is by Kevin Godley & Lol Creme, whose venture was a major factor in 1980's music video industry. Before that they were known from the band 10 CC, drummer vocalist and guitarist vocalist respectively. Bed's Too Big Without You" - mono version please ! It truly sums up what the band was about in 1979 - 1980.
Man, it's great to see this reaction! I love seeing the Police get their flowers. They really are a bit of a musician's band, very technical at times. But worth a deep dive for sure! I think you would really like the Synchronicity album, right before they broke up and Sting went solo. It's got some really interesting ideas on it. :)
I'm a bass player, and Sting is one of my favorite bass players. He's no slapper or speed demon, but MAN! he knows what a song needs. He understands the role of bass so well.
Well, he's actually able to slap like a real devil (I've seen him with my own eyes), but he almost never does it. That's quite smart of him. 😄 You're right, he just knows what the bass must do.
The police had a lot of Jamaican a lot of smooth jazz going on with their music this song had to deal with young boys going after married women I was there when they handed their Mantle to U2 I was devastated but anyway I'm glad that you're showing more videos I missed that😎
Brother J, if at all possible for you to revisit Steely Dan for two songs that you might not have reacted to... Caves of Altamira and The Royal Scam... Please, please, please 🙏🏼 ☮️&❤
Hey, hey Jamel ! - good to see a reaction ! Hope, there was a Tool song you missed .. I just saw them and got a stick tossed to me by the GOAT Danny Carey ! From a time when the videos were in slow motion, but the singing was in time if you look at the singer's mouth. I read about how they did it, but don't quite remember. I think it had something to do with modifying the speed of the music track played while the filming was done.

Jamel, from a rando on the internet,
youre the best friend i never met.
hanging with you is part of the best time of my day!
thanks for the peace.

AMEN!! I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR IT!!
The fact that his music reaction videos get censored a lot by TH-cam is why he has made less of them.
Just be patient with Jamal.. youtube was cracking down on music big time
THIS. I was a bit worried to see him going down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole. I don’t want the internet to corrupt his awesome and genuine soul.
Good news ❤
"Caught between Scylla and Charybdis" may be one of the most cerebral lyric in a rock song. It refers to two monsters from Greek mythology and it basically means caught between a rock and a hard place.
I remember having to look this up when I heard it. In the days before the internet! I thought it was pretty clever. Sting is a smart guy.
Best left unsaid to the most....
Read about those monsters when I was a kid. Odyssey, by Homer.

ME!!! I think Stewart AND Andy were underrated!! Agree - Sting is Genius - but: SO WERE THEY!!
@@Jude_196 Exactly Right, Jude!
Fun fact about Andy Summers, he Plays in a project called "Call the Police", actually it's a Brazilian the police cover. They'll play this week in Rio.
Stewart Copeland shines on every song on the album . One of the great drummers in rock
He does a version with a heap of percussion instruments, the man is beyond talented 🥁🎶
My favorite Police song. Stewart Copeland is amazing!! 🙌
Only Stewart could make an interesting yet complimentary drum part to this song
The word "hypnotic" describes this song to me. My favorite Police song. Good to see you dipping your toe back into music. Good luck!
The Police was an amazing Group. So many great songs. My favorite is still probably "Message in a Bottle."
The lyrics, “Caught between the Scylla and Charibdes” refers to two mythological monsters that occupied either side of a narrow strait that Odysseus had to pass through. One was a beast with sharp teeth and the other caused whirlpools. Both would mean death for the sailor and his crew.

Twist ending in the 3rd verse/chorus, the tables have turned: "You'll be, wrapped around MY finger."
Always enjoyed that song, even as a kid. Its worth owning their whole catalogue of music imo.
Stewart Copelands drumming is unreal. One of the best drummers.
Love this band. Stewart Copeland is a fave for me in the Drumming business.
Oh thank God! Back to music reactions! I have MISSED THESE SO MUCH!!!!!!! Love it, love it, love it!!!!!!!!!!
Uggghhh! Where have all the years gone??? I was in early 20’s when this song dropped. Thanks for this reaction…the song haunts my soul.
The Police were a fabulous band.

Back in the 80's some of the more hip school teachers used the lyrics of this song for it's literal references to Greek mythology etc. True story
The live version of this track is SICK! Stewart Copeland doing WORK behind the percussion and drum kit(s)!
One of my favorite groups ever
I'm Surprised we didn't have more mainstream groups/musicians incorporate Reggae into their songs! Sooo Relaxing!
Thank You for coming back to Music Reactions Jamal!
The video of them performing this in concert is amazing. Stewart Copeland's talent is amazing to see.
40 years 🎂, the song and the album Synchronicity. Written by Sting.

The Police were so smooth. Even their heaviest songs had that reggae flow. They never missed a beat.
I listened to lots of 70's and 80's heavy metal...then I heard the Police and they opened my mind to different music. I got into playing Classical guitar, a little Jazz and love it all.

“Who lit all those damn candles?” 😆🤣
This was on heavy rotation on MTV. IIRC, this was filmed only with the candles for illumination.
My favorite Police song. Damn.
ive recently listened to more Sting solo records.. he is one of the best singers/entertainers of our time.
Jamel I always love your reactions. I absolutely love this song. The video Always makes Me wonder, Did They get burns From the candle wax making this video? Great song love to hear Sting he has a wonderful voice.❤️✌️🌼

Devil and the deep blue sea behind me

I will turn your flesh to alabaster
Then you'll find your servant is your master!!!
Great reaction! Do a reaction on there 1983 Hit > "Murder by Number".... The Gematria CLASSIC!
you just have to do "synchronicity 2". its something else!
Another rabbit hole. Police then Sting individually...sooo good.
The Police was ANOTHER DYNAMIC TRIO that sounded WAY more like 6 people: AMAZING!!! I forgot how much I love this song
Love seeing the reaction to music videos again
Yep thanks for coming back the music reactions! You do a freaking great job man...always uplifting!
Yes! Going back to audio reactions. Love it man. Great song too!
One of their best! 🙌🏻🙏🏻❤️

Keeping great music alive.
Arguably the best song on the album. "Every Breath... is completely worn out.

Thank you Jamel!! This is my favorite Police song. ♥️
This is my favourite song from the police.
Classic awesome song
You get the jest of this song. I thought you reviewed this already for some reason. Yes, I like the Reggie sound and candles too !!!
Have you done King of Pain yet? Similar vibe and equally beautiful.
His voice is so special. Have you done Fields Of Gold? If not, please check it out. You won't be sorry.
I'm a bass player, and Sting is one of my favorite bass players. He's no slapper or speed demon, but MAN! he knows what a song needs. He understands the role of bass so well.

Masterful play by Stuart
Love this song❤
If you have a system in you ride the fuckin bass in this song is crazy I have 15’s in my Escalade the bass drop is nutz
Hey Jamal! I have a great suggestion! I don’t think you’ve done any The Guess Who yet! Great Canadian band including the song Bus Riders!
so much fun to watch you discovering the Police. Good stuff!!!
Music fits you better...nice reaction to an amazing catchy song
Sting references mythological beasts: "You consider me the young apprentice, caught between the Scylla and Charibdes." 🐲
The police had a lot of Jamaican a lot of smooth jazz going on with their music this song had to deal with young boys going after married women I was there when they handed their Mantle to U2 I was devastated but anyway I'm glad that you're showing more videos I missed that😎
Thanks for your content man. Long time listener.
I am SO HAPPY to see you!
Another masterful Godley & Crème produced video.
Next show be Everything she does is magic. A classic as well.
If you listen to the lyrics, it is about a Teacher and an apprentice about the power of Knowledge. With great power comes great responsibility
My favourite police song
Brother J, if at all possible for you to revisit Steely Dan for two songs that you might not have reacted to...
Caves of Altamira and The Royal Scam...
Please, please, please 🙏🏼
☮️&❤
YES!
More, The Police: Synchronicity II
yes, yes, yes!
Hey, hey Jamel ! - good to see a reaction ! Hope, there was a Tool song you missed .. I just saw them and got a stick tossed to me by the GOAT Danny Carey ! It's been over a month, and I am still so stoked! I'm glad you're jamming again. Culling voices is an amazing slow tune from their catalog! Take care
Such a cool song 😎🎶
Glad to see u back😊
I always got zen or shaolin monastery vibes from this video.
When I hear this song I don't know why but I think of Yoda, Vader, Skywalker, Sidious....
From a time when the videos were in slow motion, but the singing was in time if you look at the singer's mouth. I read about how they did it, but don't quite remember. I think it had something to do with modifying the speed of the music track played while the filming was done.
