  • "No teacher should have to lie as part of their job". Ross Palombo talks to a teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School who says he was told to lie about class attendance, which is how the state calculates funding from your tax dollars.

Simple state is willing to pay for the number of students you are teaching. You have to prove you have the number they are paying for. Why should the state pay more for different students. everyone is the same and gets the same amount of money for their education. There is no fairer way to distribute state funds. And this is the best way to ensure schools aren't charging for students they don't have. Even this system, as you can see is not without its susceptibility to fraud.

This is a legal issue as well in case a student commits a crime or when there is another issue. If they are marked present when they are not this is fraud and a legal problem. Poor attendance is due often to poor parenting. Glad this teacher spoke out but he will be targeted at his next evaluation. Fortunately there are many math openings in the district so he can transfer. I would urge him to transfer for his own protection.

This teacher did the right thing. Recording students present when they are NOT opens up a treasure trove of fraud.
The students shouldn't have had to return back to school after they graduated in the first place. All unfinished business should have already been wrapped up before they actually graduated, and whoever created that schedule should NOT be in charge of schedules.

Anyone that is surprised by this, I have a bridge to nowhere to sell you. I'm not a betting person but I can almost guarantee this isn't an "isolated" incident. This isn't new, school budgets in Ca have been based on attendance for as long as I can remember, going back to when I was in school almost 30 years ago. Why do you think school choice is so important?? My son's elementary school on the beach never had issues with funding, I wonder why? Not really, the kids wanted to be at that school (they took field trips to the beach every Friday when the weather allowed it) and the PTA was very involved. Our kids got things as giveaways the schools a few miles away never got. No matter what you hear, the only real color that matters to anyone is green. Give people an inch, some will take a mile.

The school inappropriately marking someone is present because they skipped the last day and I don’t wanna miss out on tens of thousands of dollars is not a morality problem. Yes they lied, yes that’s wrong, but there’s a lot more important things that the new should be investigating. I get that this is going to make waves because of how your phrasing it and the story is ready made to put right in your lap. If the school is repeatedly marking someone as present when they are not, that’s an issue. One day is nothing. Cut it out.
