OMG, Reporter Candice Nguyen sets the gold standard for going after officials who duck reporters by addressing the board directly! Wow. Most reporters just don’t have the balls. My two cents - since the Superintendent went mute, wouldn’t answer Nguyen's questions AT ALL, it was fair game to go after her bosses, the board itself if this was acceptable school district management by the Superintendent and her buddy-protectionism practice. Nguyen is on her way to a Peabody award, etc, etc and journalism HOF if she keeps this up. Well done. Thank you!!!

Company gets bought out and in come the snot-nose "bigwigs" to get my dad to resign by accusing him of stealing. Dad told them to prove it and they said they would at a meeting with even bigger bigwigs the next day. Well, my dad had a heart attack that night and was in the hospital for a couple weeks. When the lawsuit got quickly settled not too long after (spoiler alert - not a lick of proof of stealing bc it was all bs from the start), Dad got everything owed to him as a stellar 45-year employee and then some. I even recall that at least one of the snot-noses got fired.

It will never cease to amaze me how there are 40+ year old grown men who think they can scream at other grown men with no consequences, regardless of whether they are their employer or whatever. Of course, those "men" typically target men with whom they have some sort of upperhand in the power dynamics (and most of the time, their physical statures are much larger than that of their victims) but boy is it satisfying when they catch the wrong one and get whats coming to them. I had a boss start screaming bloody murder at me one time and I nipped that in the bud quick. I was a 5'6 26 year old and he was 6'2 45 year old. It was a restaurant that I delivered for in college, front end (run by this guy) was always screwing up orders for us drivers then blaming us for the screw ups. I was relatively new there and this was my first time getting blamed for an incomplete order that was delivered. I'd seen him scream at the other drivers, waiters and cooks and told them that if he did that to me then it was gonna get ugly. Well, when he called to tell me the order wasnt complete, he was screaming and I told him to watch his tone when he speaks to me. There was stunned silence then he hung up and I knew when I got to the store that he would came at me. Well, he tried it and got in my face which I very swiftly shoved him away (to the surprise of everybody) and he lunged back at me before people got between us. He was threatening to choke me out and all sorts of stuff. I grabbed a rolling pin and threw it at him as hard as I could and it put a small dented hole in the wall behind him. Everything went dead silent and I took that time to tell him that he probably could choke me out since youre much bigger that I am but you better be ready to fully finish the job on me because you may not think you look good in an orange jumpsuit but I will gladly rock one for 25-to-life. He got the message and within 15 minutes were laughing and cutting up and me and him never had problems again. Sometimes you just gotta show a bully that he might be the bully but I'm not a victim, I can be your judge, jury and executioner if need be.

I was a teacher for thirty years in California. Taught in five different districts.
This is how it works. In every district. There are "made men" who do whatever they want and no one can touch them. Everybody knows who they are, too.
These people are supposed to be public servants. School boards are supposed to oversee the superintendent and his/her administration.
In practice, once a superintendent is in power, he/she is a monarch and can ignore the public and the board. Many school board members get elected to the unpaid position so they can set up friends, family, and business associates with lucrative school district jobs and contracts. The public is checked out of the whole process and doesn't demand accountability--and the teacher and classified union heads are along for the ride.
Each of my five districts wasted an estimated 30%-40% of their budget, sometimes more. In one district, a company owned by a relative of a board member scored a twenty-five year contract to replace every doorknob in every school every three years at $1200 per door (the lever-style door handles cost $350 retail). The doorknobs last 10 or more years with heavy use, but instead of replacing them when they break, perfectly operable ones are replaced. Just one example of political corruption draining your tax funds.

I had a similar bully boss at the Cambridge Housing Authority in MA in 2003. Many people he supervised had quit before I started working there because of him. A consultant who had worked for him had told me, "you know, he isn't normal, he screams at people" before I started, but I didn't see it and took the job anyway. Until I disappointed him in some way, he acted normal, but then changed on a dime. He had a great relationship with the Authority's Director and was therefore protected from outbursts of his toxic anger. I was advised to take medical leave for the awful anxiety I felt from working with him. Later i met someone who had been his boss at his next job, in a private company, and he had treated her the same way, with toxic outbursts of anger. A horrible experience for both of us.

I worked in a public school briefly, before my supervisor bullied me out. I've seen teachers bullied too. This also upsets the students to see employees treated this way. It's Office Space level cruelty.

As a teacher, we also witnessed admin bully students. Sadly, some students and teachers become closer bc they have a common bully. Imagine having to come to school as a child and worry about adults and children bullying you

“Bullying” is too broad a term and very subjective. Until people name specific actions, just screaming ”bullying” is weak and meaningless.
