    Yoo, that's actually cool that you do it this way bc my mom taught me how she made her crusties and it is almost exactly the same way (shes a goth punk so i was kinda born into it 😂). Instead of folding the ends of the patches tho, she'd trim the edge so itd be clean and lightly lather the back of the patch with a liquid adhesive for cloth so it wouldnt fray. She also used actual thread rather than floss, but same idea basically. When i made mine, i accidentally sewed the patch and pants to my underwear bc i had no idea what i was doing until i asked her during a visit 😂

    One thing i discovered when i started using dental floss is that you don't need tie a knot at all. If you got a lighter with a concentrated flame (the sharp blue flames), you can melt the tips of the dental floss into a ball. Much faster than making a knot and so far it's been pretty strong aswell.

      @@Novak219 i think he’s referring to when you’re done sewing and you have that extra bit of thread or whatever you’re using left instead of just tying it into a knot you get a lighter and burn it into the actual fabric itself so it’s intertwined and tougher than a simple knot.

    I've never made a pair of patch pants but I have made a patch hat before. It doesn't have any patches with designs on them its just denim scraps from old jeans that I i used to cover my hat. But I have always really liked the look of "messy" stitching (like doing x shaped, v shaped and slanted stitches all mixed together) and thats how I did my hat. I personally like to call it Franken-stitching. I know a lot of punks really like the straight stitch look but I think that as long as you make sure all of your stitches aren't too short and that your patches are on securely it shouldn't really matter.

    That way you can use a bigger needle and thread the floss easier. A curved upholstery needle would work great.

    Little tip if you make your patches yourself ( I paint them and sometimes just cut out a shape and see it on a background) have a signature not for fear of them getting taken but as a start I find I sometimes just don’t know what to make often at the start of me making project so I just sew up my signature a red heart on a black background sewed on messly then I just suttonly get a ton of inspo (and it’s iconic)

  • @AvivaDamon
    @AvivaDamon หลายเดือนก่อน

    It's crazy how many things you do exactly the same way I do when I thought I came up with a lot of them. The one thing I do different which has made my life a lot easier is I take a thin line of glue and go around the outer rim of the patch on the back side of it and then just glue them down with cheap fabric glue because I like the frayed parts sticking out but if you put the glue on there you can get them perfectly straight and when you pull the thread around the edge it will go right over the glue holding the whole thing in place so nothing pulls out and you still get those frayed edges and it's just so much easier in general. Now I only have to put stuff in my pockets and whatnot when I'm sewing because if it's glued down I can just hold it with my hand and sew it up real quick. I wish I would have figured when I was a lot younger but definitely try it out. It's the biggest time saver ever. I try to only patch my pants when there's actual holes that have formed in them but they always form around the crotch so I end up having this patch diaper going at first and I have to start evening it out no matter what or it looks ridiculous. Anyone else have that problem😂? I also like using a lot of different fabrics because I think it just looks better. Makes them more interesting I guess. Getting older now I'm too damn lazy to even sell my crotch up. I'll just leave it till it gets too ridiculous and go steal some more skinny jeans from some store and try to get them dirty and wear them in as quick as possible because I hate new pants and shirts! 🤬

    dude thanks so much for showing an in-depth zoom in of your pairs! I'm currently working on my first ever pair of patch pants and let me tell you, there's some GRUESOME stitching being done out there by people who just want to `wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am`-that shit. Making all of my own patches took like 25+ hours, currently on like hour 50+ of sowing them on etcetc. It's hard work and you can't speed it up or rush it, like you said. (also why do people want to do it fast? The joy of working hours on end on a pair that'll take you through anything is like the best part of this lol)
    Anyway, really loved the vid, thanks man :)

    Also if you get the thickest polyester thread that Joanne's or Michaels or whatever craft store that carries free sewing products, you can burn the ends also since polyester is basically plastic. I just prefer the black thread and as far as I know the health goth trend hasn't spawned black floss yet. Just a heads up for people that don't know. They also have stretchy thread that works good in areas like your crotch because that shit is just going to keep ripping no matter what unfortunately but the stuff doesn't seem to stand the test of time unfortunately. It does work good in some cases though. Especially good for a quick fix if you want to just line whatever tour with a little bit of glue with a thin line on the inside of the tear and then sew it up with stretchy thread that will buy you a lot of time before you actually have to sit down and patch that shit up. Just another tip. One bad thing is the glue looks pretty disgusting after a while like you came perfectly all along the inside of the tears of your pants somehow but if you ask me that's just going to impress your partner more than anything or at least it should. Like yeah my pants tour so I just jizzed along the inside to stick them together so my junk wasn't hanging out all day. There's another free life hack for you. At least its on the inside🤷

    I’m on the heavier side and sometimes finding clothes at the thrift store is hard for me, it wouldn’t be a big deal if I resorted to buying from a bigger retail store right? It’s just so hard to find clothes at my size, especially with people buying up bigger sizes for no good reason.

    Exactly fuck the elitism especially in “punk” fashion, like you said, you’ll have pants or vests that are made out of necessity so it that sense you’ll have no choice of what to use or how it looks. It basically all comes down to what you can find to use and the skill u have to put it together. Also, if you’re doin it fun than it’s an artistic freedom of expression that nobody can judge for obvious reasons…. Anyways, i can go all day on “elitists” cuz they SUUUUUCK!!

  • @nathanbender3811

    What a great tutorial. I would be interested to know what you did to resize your pants. My last job I ended up gaining 40 lbs and would love to bring my ol' 08 crust pants back from the grave.

    • @reptil_diy
      @reptil_diy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So I took my crust pants and cut out an "inner seam" along the inside legs, all the way through the crotch. I then hand sewed them over and onto a donor pair of pants. I then went back and patched over the empty spaces with new patches to hid the blank space on the inside of the legs.
      Optionally you could cut the seam on the outside of the pants if you want to.
      It is a bit of work but definitely worth the effort.
      Feel free to dm me on Instagram with any questions @reptil_kodiya

    • @reptil_diy
      @reptil_diy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nathanbender3811 I did not use the front pockets or the waist line of the original crust pants, I cut just below it. Then I sewed it onto the donor pants and relied on using those pockets and waist line.

    4:45 is there a reason for safety pins in particular to pin down patches? Cuz I just use straight pins like you do in most sewing but I also between gifts and buying things over the years have gotten quite a bit of sewing supplies.
    On safety pins though, I used to be in theatre and I also used to work as a server in a cosplay restaurant and I will tell you safety pins and Bobby pins are ALWAYS good to have on hand whenever
