Mansell was always a very underrated and often unlucky driver, involved in incidents and technical problems often not of his doing. What is often forgotten is after his big success in Formula 1, he moved in CART racing in the States and won his debut season - a first.
Double champ that year wasn't he?
@@neddyseagoon9601 Yes
Mansell at his peak either chasing down a leader or trying for a fastest lap for pole position was untouchable. Ive never seen a driver with more determination, bravery and sheer brilliance. God bless you Nigel 🇬🇧
nigel mansell is the biggest joke of a driver ever. 92 williams was the most overpowered car in any season and it's carrying his name.
@@Lukexxxxxx Although that is true Mansell came very close multiple times before. When he drove for Ferrari he was a force to be reckoned with. Until (or since) then I've never seen a driver tossing an F1 car around like he could.
@@LukexxxxxxWhat a load of rubbish!. Mansell achieved so much, on both sides of the atlantic. All senna did was intimidate other drivers on track into letting him overtake or have an accident. He was a dirty player & no mistake. He could not intimidate nigel, the brit was far too strong of mind & body to play that game!.
@@Lukexxxxxx If Williams had fitted wheels slightly better he would have easily had 3 or 4 Championships, Are you a teenager luke, Stop pretending you understand this era, the man was a beast on track, in cars that would end you in a second, unlike the PS4 cars of 2024.

What an amazing day for Mansell. Thank you for bringing it back to life.
Thank you for stopping by
As a kid and a die hard Senna fan, Mansel was without doubt the driver that I feared and hated the most. My God he made me cry…. lol. Today I have to confess that I was spoiled by his singular talent and bravery. I love you Mansel. Thank you for all roller coaster of emotions during my childhood. You are the man.
Mansell was tenacious and sacrificed his house to make it to F1…he was an incredible racing driver & refused to allow anyone intimidate him
Love to see Nigel and Max he wouldn’t be giving him room or backing off that’s for sure.
But why always whining then? Prost was better, and Senna was better as well
Love both Nigel and Senna.
I remember that day and the tremendous emotions.
Thank you,
You're welcome... Thank you for stopping by :)
Prost came with funding and political backing of the F1 Organisation. Senna came with much money and talent. Mansell struggled with budget not coming from money unlike the rest he was a working class bloke with absolute determination to beat the established toffs and given the tools that he did both sides of the pond. A real class act for me.
Considering where he came from he did amazingly well. He always sells himself short. To have that much determination to succeed is extraordinary.
The 4 titans of that era were godsent
Finally someone who knows what they are talking about
the man remortgaged his house to make it. He even convinced his wife to do it. That's real determination.
@S2KEVIN I'm glad he did, loved the battles between him and Senna, definitely made F1 better
These are the years that I watched F1, some great races
Good old days...The Lion was my favourite drivers all or nothing big heart big balls . That was one of best days of my life
We had the gr8est 4. Piquet, Mansel, Prost and Senna.
Big balls and no brain 😂
He had to put up with lots of prejudice and snobbery.
Jerez 86 Brands 85, 86 Silverstone 87 Australia 94 So many great times Gabriel
I was there for the race in 1989. The seat I was in had Mansell starting directly in front of us.
I was in the Grandstand too, in Silverstone 89GP, Senna got the jump and held the lead for 3 laps in a much inferior car
I remember this race and overtake as if it were yesterday. I literally screamed with joy as Mansell darted past Senna, what a race and what a driver.
I remember yelling at the television when Mansell pulled that move. Then, he went in to win. Incredible.
that comment is just jingoism
@@Lukexxxxxxget some help
@@kesfitzgerald1084I also remember screaming at the TV coz BBC cut the feed immediately after the overtake to show the presentation of the Ryder trophy! FFS. Deserved defunding even back then...
I did that too and immediately worried that the more powerful Honda would get him in the slip stream...
I felt like I was racing that day...
Fantastic overtake mansell was excellent driver senns vs mansell what battles
Well and respectfully presented...👍
Thank you!
Mansell was excellent on his day and a lot of fun to watch. Senna’s standard of excellence was more stable and his performance ceiling was higher. He was more dedicated too. Those were fun times. The 1989 season was a really exciting year.
Mansell made F1 --- he was a total racer .
I was so passionate about F1 in the 80s and early 90s and now I dislike it so much.
Mansell was TRULY - THE LION! I followed him from his beginnings to hi slast race. TOP BRITISH drivers appear only ONCE in a decade! That move was a CLASSIC and is still copied today where possible! The 'Mansell Manoeuvre'
Even though I know the full story of this race, being an F1 fan since 1987, the production of this video has to applauded. Great storytelling!
Thank you so much for the lovely comment, and for stopping by.
The greatest driver of all time. He changed the face of F1 and Indy cars forever.
Chill bro 😂
Mansell was certainly better than senna..he just doesn't get the recognition so much because he's alive.
Mansell is under rated and should be up there in the conversation, but Senna was a better all rounder.
Senna also thought Jim Clarke was the best ever, and who am I to argue?
Great mini doc. I wasn’t all that into F1 back then, years later it’s fantastic to look back and learn about these seminal moments in the sport.
Thank you!
"He was easily the toughest driver, and the most ferocious driver to protect his area of space.". Mansel about Senna in Top gear Senna tribute
Yea but when you are not British and whoop British ass with tough racing the most unsportsmanlike country shits on you for years.
No bigger hypocrites than the British in sports.
Thanks for the memories. One of Nigel's great days
Glad you enjoyed it... thanks for stopping by.
Excellent. Very nicely done video, thank you.
ahh when f1 was worth watching. long gone are those days. well told i enjoyed the watch.
Under rated. Great video
I got chills within the first 30 seconds. An iconic season in F1 lore. I remember watching these drivers, and those times feel like yesterday. There a good reasons these classic races, and this era especially, endure in the memories of fans, new or old. Their spirits live on in the sport to this day.
Well put together thanks, Mansell is a Shackleton ,never give up !
Thanks for stopping by and giving it a watch

Oh, yeah. The tanks and the hybrid engines they drive today are awful.

More videos planned, they just take a bit of time to put together

Mansell +1s
“Senna, ah finally a worthy opponent”
Good review. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Well done Video !!
The race I remember above every other at the time, and not only from the first full year I watched formula one as an 11-year old kid just about to start secondary school. Only the Imola round (due more because of Bergers crash than Sennas betrayal of Prost) and the Japanese and Australian races could rival for the eventfulness of that same year.
Absolute kudos to you for rekindling this golden moment in motorsport history
Nigel legend❤
Mansell was the greatest F1 driver the UK has ever had - but he's working class so that will never be acknowledged.
What a BS. Hamilton is working class and amongst the greatest ever
@@eduardhenny5725 Mansell was blocked and thwarted at every turn by the F1 establishment, unlike Hamilton who guided in. Maybe cos he's black and gay?
@@eduardhenny5725
Hamilton was Middle class.
Interestingly, when Mansell was on Top gear, he said he thought he could take Hamilton over one lap.
He was faster in the reasonably priced car.
@@kevinshort3943 he's also black and gay... ergo.

I don't know how any of those things are relevant, but I'm pretty sure Mansell isn't either of them.
I met Senna when he came to Rye House to pick up a new kart, he was an enigma back then, I followed his career after.
Senna picked up a Deavinson Sprint? Did he drive on the track?
I remember this race well. My first year watching f1. I was a young Ferrari fan and thought after watching my first ever race at Brazil that year and see Nigel win I had made a fantastic choice in Ferrari. Then it went dramatically downhill till this race. I was absolutely ecstatic watching that overtake and prayed till the end of the race that gearbox didn’t break
I’ve been a Mansell, Button and JPM at Williams plus a Lewis fan my whole life but Mansell was unique maybe not the best overall but he was the most exciting driver I’ve ever seen.
Balls of steel and 110% committed he was fighting the likes of Piquet, Prost and Senna he gave as good as he got whatever he lacked in outright talent he made up with heart and determination.
I still haven’t met him yet but it’s the last driver I wish to meet. True world champion reigning F1 and then Indy Car champion something that will never be repeated.
Don't forget Damon Hill. Everyone seems to forget his championship these days.
Great video
Thank you!
Thanks for giving it a watch
Awesome. Thanks for posting this epic memory
12:00 Super Mario, who is out for a casual stroll across the pitlane (without a care in the world), narrowly avoids being smashed a few hundred feet in the air by a 150mph Berger Ferrari missile!
No pitlane speed limits back in the 80s
Good catch!
Great video. I was always for the King Nigel Mansell, but cried like a baby for days when mighty genius Ayrton Senna died. For me F1 also died that day. Never imagined Nigel would carried Senna coffin...
Wouldn’t say he showed Senna whose boss. He just laid out a hell of a race that time and came out ahead against an absolute legend.
I remember Mansellmania well as a 5 year old kid in 1992. It was what got me into the sport in the first place.
This era of F1 was definitive. It had it all: drama, excitement, charismatic and genius drivers and true racing, not the anodyne technological processions we currently see.
Nigel was a true role model humble and unassuming and no doubt hard working yet daring to be someone and accomplishing that goal.
Great racing and good video!
This Hungary GP from Mansell was one of the best performances I have ever seen of a driver in a race.
Mansell had such days were he was literally unbeatable. This was one of these days.
Did this guy just say Senna was "arguably" one of the greatest of all time. Oh wake up and smell the roses kid.
How have you got only 1.9k subs this is amazing
Thank you so much!
More Mansell content like this!!!
There's so many great & historic moments in Mansell's career, there's definitely more on the way!
Great memories thank you 🫡🍻👍👍
great video.
Senna !!!!
Good, we all remember Nigel being someone doing memorable races and winning undisputed races.
Had it not been for his failure in Adelaide, his career change would be important.
Tires management was part of the race.
Every driver got a failure in tires in career, Prost and Senna did also.
Nigel isn't dumb, he focuses only on racing, politics just ruins sport
Both Senna and Mansell were remarkable racers. Main diference though Senna won 3 wdc and Mansell lost 3 wdc.
@@geraldo209 You got it.
This video's a load of you know what. Firstly Prost gave Mansell a thrashing the following year, because he was a much better driver. Secondly, the only reason the McLaren was the best package, was entirely down to having the two best drivers by some margin. The McLaren wasn't the best chassis, that was the Williams, and the Honda lacked overall power in comparison to the Renault and Ferrari. There's a thing called a gearbox. Inside of the gearbox are a variety of gears. Which ones you choose is down to the race engineers preference. Senna was quicker down the straight, because he had a shorter gear, meaning better acceleration down the short straight. Mansell didn't do anything special, he was lucky Johansson missed a gear and forced Senna to lift off. Mansell wasn't a very good driver, he was average. Peter Warr at Lotus, replaced him with Senna, because Mansell threw away so many certain race wins and point finishes. He famously said "Mansell will never win a race as long as he has a hole in his arse". He was wrong about that, but he needed a dominant car to do it.
Andy.. Please don't give up. Your script was cock on, your "Voice acting" was right up there too and splicing all that footage together was really top banana. You *will* get to 100k subs, just keep churning these stories out - I know (I really know) how hard it is. I will support you. Subbed. Good luck. PS - It's unlikely I will ever see your reply since I already have a ton of traffic but I will hopefully see your next one. The 1986 season might be a good one with the final race where Mansell blew a tyre. Also when Damon and Schumey came together - also in Aus. I get the feeling you probably have a "FIrst" channel and this is a part time channel. You're skills are right up there. Love it. Really pure diamond. PPS - Don't be tempted by an AI voice. Yours is perfect. Feel free to chat via email. No worries.
What a pass, what a drive, what a win. 🎉🎉
Nigel, at his peak, was in short bursts simply the best driver in the world. Il Leone, adored by the Tifosi and British crowds, respected by the greats and a tough negotiator with his bosses. Now himself a legend, one of the greats who stayed and aged with us.
Nice hearing Murray at the end there
Mansell was good but never as good as SENNA, NEVER - Senna was in a different level than every other driver, including Nigel - sorry but history can't be changed
100% agreed.....
Yeah he was. Senna was the best, but both mansell and Prost had moments of being better. Senna just had more of them.
Nigel is alive so he's better
@@Boa74 nah, doesn't work like that Sir, is being alive or dead your metric???? sad!
@@AubMar I’m better than Einstein!
Another point is that the "undercut" wasnt a concept then. Even though Mansell's 87 Sstone win was an undercut with the leader not stopping at all ..
While Senna was tweaking his car with his engineers and trying to improve the safety of the track, Mansel was mostly on the golf course.. Mansel was good. Senna is a legend!
Very, very good.
Thank you so much!
Mansell was a good driver , Senna as a racing God
"This is an all-out shoot-out between two of the most aggressive and exciting drivers..." EVER!!!
The prettiest era for f1 cars , that Ferrari is a wet dream
Love Mansell but don’t see enough of him
One of the best races I watched, was Senna v Mansell. I think Mansell was with Williams at this point. Senna won, but Mansell had fallen back to like 14th or something like that. Although Senna won, Mansell had came back and was right behind Senna at the finish. To get so close at the end when he was so far back was unreal. Wish I could remember what race it was.
The legend and the lion some of the best racing there was.
Both great drivers
In equal cars would Senna be the better driver. In thus case had Nigel a bit more momentum . Nice video🍀
Great job with the video, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this battle again, but why such biased comments and a click bait title? It's uncalled for.
Mansell had the better tyre, Senna lost a ton of time behind Patrese all race long, and then got blocked by the backmarker who decided to lift up on corner exit. Mansell was in a position to have enough time to react in that situation and take advantage. Both drivers did everything right, but fortune smiled on Mansell.
The problem is he couldn't deliver such performances consistently, while Senna was almost always on top of his game. He destroyed Prost that season, even if Prost won the title. And then Prost destroyed Mansell in Ferrari.
I like Mansell, he is an awesome person and a driver, but you just can't put him above the likes of Senna and Prost in terms of overall ability to win races and championships. Perhaps it was just his mindset of approaching racing more casually and not working as hard outside the cockpit. Nobody denies his determination and racing skills.
One of 2 best overtaking manoeuvres ever. The other Mika / Schumacher spa.
It's often overlooked, but Montoya had 2 or 3 amazing overtakes against Schumacher.
The best Mansell's speed on hungaroring was on 1988...
Nothing, no one, better than The Lion
My favourite driver of all time.
The Day Nigel Mansell Showed Senna Who’s The Boss then Senna showed Nigel who was the Boss for the remaining 364 days
Nigel - 1 day boss
Senna - 364 day Boss
Thanks for writing what I had been thinking. One race does not define the man. Heck, even Lance Stroll had an F1 podium
One race win doesn't amount to a hill of beans. Senna still went on to win the title. Senna reaction to Mansell's overtake behind the back marker was proof of his greatness. The difference between the Good and the Great is knowing when to Go and knowing when to Wait. Senna instinctively knew to back out of the move and live to fight another day, going on to win the title.
This was 1989. Senna didn't take the title, in large part to Mansell taking him out in Portugal. Very dirty and dangerous.
@@puketaiThat's nonsense! It was the other way around. Senna took Mansell out. Mansell being on a different strategy attempted to pass Senna for the third time that race and Senna couldn't take it and cut in on him.
Nope, you cleary know nothing about it. Mansell was black flagged at the time for starters. Drama queen that succeeded in F1 because he was a marketable Brit. Suck it up princess.
@@Markielee72 clueless little boy
@@Markielee72 How is Senna responsible for Suzuka 1990 if he is also responsible for Estoril 1989? They are the same accident
Mansell is my motoring hero, but what a miserable bugger he was when i met him.
I reckon for most people when you ask to remember the most memorable Mansell/Senna moment on track it'll be Monaco 1992, when Nigel spent three laps after stopping for new tyres and losing the lead to Ayrton and then trying to get past Ayrton in his 17 foot wide McLaren! I wasn't on the edge of my seat while watching those last few laps, i was perched in mid air two feet in front of it!
There are few F1 drivers I respect as much as Mansell.
The race start image at 8.44 isn't from Hungary
Possibly the most underrated all round ridiculously fast drivers of all time, one of the old fast in anything school 👌
F1 LEGENDS ❤ MY HEROES❤
Andy, you thought about doing single season review videos? The official ones are terrible and are contemporary so without any hindsight they are often incorrect. I think it’s a serious gap in the F1 TH-cam market. A lot of work but you could slowly build up a catalogue of videos. Just start with your favourite years, different eras, mix it up? Just a thought 👍
Hi, thank you.. that’s a very good idea. I’ll have to give it some thought. They’d take a bit of time, but maybe I can plan those ones slowly and thoroughly in the background of others… hmm plenty to think about, great suggestion!
Yeah, right!
Oh I don't know, senna drove himself into a wall. Never give up indeed.
Mansell was good, but was no Senna
Nigel Mansell…..balls of steel……get out of my way…..I’m coming through!
Il Leone. Red 5 always no.1 imho
That was brilliant 👏
Thank you!
F1 was better then! Now, engines rarely fail, and drivers had more guts! However the top frive drivers are always the best you can get!
Drivers from any era would drive what they are given and would not know any different if you took them and put them in a different era.
Its a shame he never got that equal #1 status
Nigel always had Ayrton's number. If Mansell was in his mirrors, Senna would invariably bottle it.
When I think of Mansell in a Ferrari though, I always think back to the time that the BBC did a montage piece of him driving it, with the sound track being
"Red Red Wine" (whine) by UB40 😀
No no no, this is BS! This is simply Racing, Senna knew that. Somewhere sometime you overtake and sometimes some driver overtakes you.
I remember a Brazilian guy back in the 90s telling me that he thought Mansell was almost as good as Senna.
When pushed Frank Williams said he can't say Mansell is a worse driver than Senna.
Nigel is greatly respected here in Brazil as one of the most brave and biggest rivals of Senna. They gave us incredible wheel to wheel moments and some real fun battles to watch.
@@colmiazSenna was without doubt the greatest of his period, however he needed a set of incredibly talented drivers to push him hard to give him a stage to show how special he was.
