Really good old solid cars, with a touch of luxury trim interior.
In 1976 I owned a 1956 Singer Gazelle MK 1 with the 1500cc O.H.C. engine. Grey and maroon two tone coachwork. I wouldn't mind this black example 👍

Always remember our local landlady always had a older version for many years and it always drove & rode like a modern car .One of our mechanics bought the Hillman Hunter shaped car from our garage owner ,which was mint and it did look odd parked outside among all the
new Datsun"s [Nissan"s] in the late 70s ,but always felt like a quality car ,especially with the wood dash ,but didn"t have the same presence as the late 1950"s cars ! .Would have one today but prices are silly ,at the moment I am happy with my Rover 2000 .

They did a wonderful job with the last Hillman Gazelle in Australia which was a minx with all the trimmings and engine upgrades also they did a Hillman Hunter 660 royal with all the wood grain dashboard and the alloy head the hunter won the London to Sydney marathon rally in 1968 but to late to save Rootes from Chrysler

How odd that a supposedly luxury car does not have any armrests on the doors! I do remember that the Routes Group did not fit them on the driver's door on the grounds that they shouldn't need it if they are driving correctly, but this model doesn't have any at all.

It really wasn't a luxury car -- more a 'tarted up' Hillman Minx. This example is actually fairly standard and I see it doesn't have the optional oil pressure and amp gauges. The luxury came with the Sceptres and Super Snipes from the Humber branch of Rootes, and they did have arm rests. In fact even the Hillman Super Minx had handles-come-armrests in the rear (along with ash trays fixed into the doors). The Gazelle probably couldn't spare the width for that level of comfort.

But it still seems strange that they fitted a lot of wood, surely the sign of luxury aspirations, but no armrests!!!

@@michaelbacon561 It's the joint-smallest of the line up (along with the Minx) and neither had the arm rests so space was likely the consideration. Never marketed as a luxury car though -- you had to save up and buy a "Super Minx" for that! The wood trim was merely a hint.
