A 1998 Reliant Robin!
Please let us know of your personal experience with these cars.
I’m sure some of you have some great story’s to tell.
And finaly what do you think we should do with this old Robin?
Loading it onto the truck was epic!😆
Wasn't it just 😂😂 needs to be made amphibious
That Robin can fly!
I think he would go over the cab
@@associatedblacksheepandmisfitsGreat minds think a like 👍
😂
almost pissed myself when you launched off the lorry ramp. pure class.
Exhaust: optional ! 😂
Hilarious !!
Please force Jack you use it as his daily driver. Not only it is the perfect size for him but it will teach him a lesson for breaking all of the Land Rover Discovery’s he’s been given. 👌
13:59
Company car lmao
Jacks new chariot!
With sign writing!
Yes. This must be done for crimes against the Discovery
i love that you turned up to collect it in your Scania
It’s the farmer in me
Really needed the Foden to lift it onto the deck though.
The look of disbelief on the sellers face when you gave him money priceless 🤣🤣🤣
always a sign of a quality car when you get a large proportion of the car in a carrier bag and the seller says "may require some assembly "!!!!!!
The plastic sheeting on the driveway was a nice touch as is the rod knock. Should make a nice kennel for Ted and Chisel.
Or a plant pot for Mrs Hewes.
for those who don't want the driveway contaminated hehe
@@GolfMike09 He is a plant pot .....
He’ll need a car nappy, elderly cars piss oil.
Complete overhaul and restoration.
Another fv4005 project sort of thing.
Get the thing as good as new, then sell it, ASAP!😂
Best mod you can do for the old girl is a pair of MX5 tombstone seats, just drive bolts through floor and put spreader plates under the floor so you can get really good strength. Much of the parts are British Leyland parts bin stuff, the seats are actually Triumph Herald, wheels and brakes are Mini, steering column and wheel pattern is Triumph Herald, wipers are Metro at rear and generic capped off Mini front, headlamps are MK2 Ford Fiesta as are the indicators up front, rears are Ford P100 and some Escort van clusters, beware the front headlamps as they are a PIG to get installed properly. Locks are doors standard Squires, rear Metro tailgate, interior door handles are Marina. Anti roll bars there is a particular Peugeot GTi model that has the same fitment and are far superior to the Reliant ones, rear shocks the front gas dampers from a Mini will bolt straight in, front shock GAZ will make you a Reliant one up no problemo. Chassis is hot deep dipped galvanised BUT the steering A frame at the front that the front wheel etc attaches to is NOT and they are not fun when one disintegrates on you at speed. 2nd mod to do is to hardwire 12v bulb holders into the light cluster and hard wire the wiring into the existing circuit, also change the earth strapping for big beefy Transit earth straps oh and LED up where you can, I got 20 year LED's in mine and never let me down and very bright too.
Should you be embarrassed that you know so much about these Robins?
@@Willheheckaslike Absolutely not!
He’s the Dodgy Druid, ‘tis a Druid’s stock in trade to be the guardian of arcane knowledge and cunning remedies, including what to harvest and from whence it may be found.
Its more comedy than car, but I would´nt want to live in a world without it.
Good content!
I always remember in my childhood seeing a Robin take a sharp corner and noisily scrape along the road for some distance on its side before righting itself and continuing on its way.
Naylor's Road between Huyton and Netherly Merseyside, back in the 70's was a graveyard for Reliant Robins. There was about a 50deg bend about halfway down what was a fast'ish stretch of road, caught many a three wheeler unawares...
Thanks Mate for the laughs this morning , You have lots of work ahead if you on this thing
Tank turret. Convert the robin into a tank turret. You know it makes sense. Fibreglass is the future of tank armour.
I had one of these, very cheap to run, reliants when a poor student. I discovered that the door lock was no barrier to entry because if you gripped and pulled the door (while locked) forwards you could unlatch it and open it! I was once 'cut up' from the inside lane of a roundabout by a bigger car with a glancing blow on the front bodywork, which simply 'bounced' my reliant into a new direction. My suggestion for a project is to convert it into a boat and add external paddles onto the rear driven wheels.....with the front wheel as the rudder.
The reliant boat idea is the best!
Launching a Robin onto a flatbed. Brilliantly funny. Who needs Space X videos?
it was into space before them anyhow😮😂😂
£400??!! you overpaid by about £400
He's using it for content so it's a tax write off at least
(Roughly)😂
@@Cf-82 Some sort of write off that's for sure.
Use it to teach Ted how to drive 😁👍
Wrong!! Joe should've been paid £400 to take it away!!!
The level of commitment going up the ramp was perfect
That's knocking like a bag of spanners! Rodney's come a knocking
No worries. It'll all be in the oil pan.
"I actually think the engine runs quite well to be honest"

@@ABoringTool Sweet as a nut, Rodders!
One of the most comedy moments I ever saw with my own eyes was when I was parked at the side of the road, minding my own business, when a car wheel came past me, just rolling along dead straight down the road. It went on down the road some way, slowing as it went, over the centre of a small roundabout and came to rest on the far side of it. I looked behind me and saw a man peering at the rear of his Reliant Robin, which was leaning over to one side. Your wheel went that way mate!
Be kind and make it the best Robin in the country👍
It's refreshing to see madness. .....I mean people still having fun. Keep it up.
Broooo the way you yeeted that thing on the truck XD LOL
Amazing video, and your skills are loading onto the truck were superb!
Absolute beast of a motor. 😂😂
0-60.... never, but smiles per miles, i can see you having a lot of fun
>the engine is mint
>knocks like a bag of spanners falling down the stairs
sounds about right 🤣
The guy who sold him the T-34 said the same thing.
It will make a fine a fine wheel chock for one of your tanks. Until you can't stop your self from diving all the way over
Every body knocks plastic pigs, but back in the 80's when we still had proper Winters they were an affordable warm way to stay mobile for bikers through the cold months. I did a mushroom trip in one up at Castle Donington airport in 1983, tripping to Ten Years After - Another Space In Time & have many other happy memory's of them. Before you trash it, it is a classic motor, they don't make em anymore, spares etc are getting scarcer. Not wishing to piss on your fireworks or lecture you, but there's always another side to things.
Friend of mine had one for many years.. All he could afford. Not sure of the point of this video. Boys are bloody good engineers, of that there is no doubt.. But!
instantly remembers Jeremy Clarkson RR video where he constantly flips over at every turn
Didn't he also get overtaken by a milkfloat on a hill, or was that something I've got confused?
Joining The Reliant Robin Owners Group…. im sure they are ecstatic to have you 🤣
Love it ,my dad had one . Much less luxurious than yours. How about painting the same colour as one of the tanks and mount it on the back.. like a life raft on a ship . Set of ramps and a handy runaround for the shows .
Keep up the good work 😂
When buying a car, if it doesn't come with a sack of parts, just walk away. Thanks Ted, your contribution was priceless
You know Joe has that farm strength when he just lifts up 3/4 of a car
....it is made of fibreglass tho 😆
Thank you for this special video. I haven't laughed this good for a long time. Epic!!
In 3 weeks time "I have no idea why it just set on fire" 😅
or, "I know exactly why this just caught fire and I am confident I can replicate it precisely. Time to buy another!!"
You think it'll last three weeks with Mr Hewes 🙂
@@f3aok that was best case scenario
A neighbour borrowed our ramps to do some repairs on his Robin, next we knew black smoke was drifting past the window. Looked out to see lots of flames not long followed by a visit from the Fire Brigade. Welding the fuel tank had not been a good idea. Melted glass fibre took an age to clean off the ramps.
I love when you’re loading it. You turn around as serious as a bond villain. “Princess Anne owned one of these”.
No she didn't look at the answers in the comments above!
HRH The Princess Royal owned a Reliant Scimitar!
Loved watching this and thank you for not calling it a Robin Reliant. There are so many sphincters that use that term. I bet none of them ever say something is a Focus Ford. I put them in the same category as people who say slow lane and fast lane on motorways instead of lanes 1, 2, 3 etc, they are too stooopid to realise the speed limit is normally the same in all of the lanes. Bloody hell, I've done it again, I've pressed the rant switch.
E Type Jag?
That's E-Type Jaaaag
This makes me very happy the fact i was so close to purchasing this fine motor vehicle.
Were you going to move to Yorkshire and mine coal as well?
@@Vtarngpb Yes that's easterly what i was going to do ,
8:33 a bean tin and a couple of jubilee clips. 👌
The look of utter dismay on Ted's face is epic! Back in the late 70s there was a recall on Robins as the D washer Reliant fitted to the front hub was too small so the wheel used to come off and find the quickest route into the passenger compartment. 😅
Princess Anne didn´t have a reliant Robin. She had a relient Scimitar with a glass roof (that leaked). I visited the relient factory in 1969 / 70 and saw it there after she had sent it back to get it fixed.
Ah but the scimitar was just a four wheeled version of the reliant ....honest 😅
@@zeberdee1972 The Scimitar wasn't a four wheeled version of any other car
@@canamunga I know I was joking .
I loved the wheely onto the truck. They fulfilled a vital role when they where first made, gave the British public a cheap car without the car licence requirements. Great fun though.... Use it as a mobile tool box, maybe a pickup conversion 🙂
You could drive one on a motorcycle licence, like what I did back in the day (three wheels, under 410kg/900lb).
@@robertsneddon731without reverse gear connected ........
Speechless........ But I kinda get it??🤣 A replacement for Jacks defender???😌

My claim to fame is that I learnt to drive in a Reliant Regal (3 wheeled Anglia) On the M6. Perfectly legal as I have a motorcycle licence.
Reliant n ford worked close for many many years..... Ford supplied running gear etc and reliant did the fiber glass for 1 of fords best rally car the RS 200....
Great nostalgia........

@@IAmTheCoastalGhost Have you got a tin of Flex-Seal and pair of oars, by any slim chance?
If so, the Reliant inverts with ease and Bob’s yer uncle, you’ve saved both the cost of a return flight and of shipping the little darling.
Bring a pair of stout gloves and a buoyancy aid, just to be on the safe side.
Mechanic of 50 years. Definitely a big end knock., my mate had one of these it was stage 2, he use to race escort RS turbos and win the thing was scary especially when a bend was approaching
On the center console at 12:44 == a clock and ??? oil change reminder setting? Rally timer? Clock looks like something out of an aircraft.
The kitten version (4 wheels) was a decent car if the engine was in a good state of health and looked after. I clocked one at a ton once.
Ideas? Wider flatter tires to reduce roll, heavier shocks to reduce roll, sway bars to reduce roll. Oh, and a cherry-bomb exhaust just to make it sound mean! Don't let Jeremy Clarkson anywhere near it unless you're ready to do a lot of bodywork! Maybe paint it M.o.D. colours and take it to military shows along with the tanks!
I'm in the 13th year of owning a MK2 Robin, paint is rough as its kinda trottered but mechanically its quite a tune on the old engine with much of the mechanicals replaced with new or NOS parts. Put it this way, I have had on GPS at Zeals abandoned airfield got her to 96mph on an absolute foot to the floor screaming thrash, front end was beginning to float with the air under the front buffeting but 96mph from a tiny alloy engine is mental :)
Wonderful vid. I had a yellow reliant 3/25 in 1977 - called it Festering Heap. Enabled me to drive it on a full bike licence, pass my car driving test in 3 months and sell it to buy a Triumph Herald with 4 wheels and the rustiest chassis ever. Oh the joys!
I can see that going under a tank at some point in the future
Should have found a Batmobile, a Robin simply won’t do .😂
Your dad was absolutely right when he said its about time you grew up - but we all hope you don’t 🤣
Fitting a gun turret is going to be a challenge🙄
The irony of the name Reliant is not lost on me.
Free floating interior - excellent.
My dad has a Robin too! It's a great little bit of kit to run around it, gets looks everywhere it goes. Hasn't found itself on its roof... yet
@@krysler1490 does he also work in a mine in Yorkshire? 😅
Please restore and not destroy. They deserve their place in history. I started my driving in something similar. Happy days John S.E.
Kettenkrad Robin conversion. clearly needs some tracks on the back.
I love the Tesco bag of optional essentials (i.e all the bits missing)
Is it a ROBIN or the later RIALTO. When I were a kid in the 1960's our school in Lichfield took the lads over 14 for a visit to Reliant at Fazeley. The factory was split in two parts by the Fazeley road or A5, I forget which. Body fabrication was on one side and engine and completion was on the other. To get the body over to the engines, two blokes carried the body over the road and a third chap stopped the traffic ( honest ) not having you on. It was all very Heath Robinson.
There's never any mention of the engines that were delivered to Reliants engine prep facility at Shenstone. The early 700cc lumps were from memory made by Ford until much later when Reliant made their own. Shenstone is about 8 miles from Fazeley.
Ford used Reliants plant to produce 200 cars so that they could meet rally regulations. Think the site is now a freight haulage depot.
If you drive it the right way and slightly drift the back end it’s a lot more controllable. The back end is light enough to do this and it avoids the tendency to roll. Mine was dreadful and great in equal measures. Not as much fun as my Cooper S, but still fun.
The sheer engineering genius of that car proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that engineers smoke the Mary Jane
Guy I used to know had one, and was very proud of having a SP30 on his licence with it. He was mortified when it eventually died.
Out of everything you own, this is the coolest
It looks like a perfect addition to your vehicle collection, stand it between the Bentley and a Chieftain.
I had a Reliant Supervan 3, did a total of 72k miles in it including touring England for a week. They are great but you have to learn how to drive them safely. It needs a bit of work but if you have the time and patience you will have a rare bit of transport!
Nice! Engine clanging like a church bell.
My first car was a clapped out 1959 VW Beetle. SImple as can be to work on and I learned a good deal about how cars work and how to keep one running. Total death trap (my fist brake job failed me, but I was able to downshift and stop in time), but its advantage was that you couldn't get going fast enough to do much damage. Wife's first car was a Ford (exploding) Pinto. Also with a manual transmission. She learned how to bump start it when the battery died. I'm a firm believer that one's first vehicle should be a sh*tbox with a manual transmission. Adversity conquered builds character and resilience.
Bet the seller thought all his Birthdays and Christmas had come at once finding a buyer who was prepared to part with so much cash. 🤭
He was a sound lad
My brother in law had one of these a few year ago as a winter driver rather than his motorbikes. I drove it a few times and it was hilarious. Security feature was the gear lever came out 😂.
One advantage is you don't have to worry about the tracking .
😂 Princess Anne had one of these. The epithet that forever plagues the Schimitar
I like the performance upgrade, Minilites on a Robin, now that is class well defined...
One of my never-got-to-do projects as a teenager was to make a backwards driving Robin by putting a Mini engine & subframe in the back. I has a writeoff Mini my mate the Robin, just neither of us had any spare cash, workshop or trailer to make it happen :(
1. Diff welding and small tractor tires for more grip on the farm.
2. Do you still have a tank engine left? The little one needs a new engine.
I’ve never seen Linda the forklift laugh as much as she did when you reversed the 3 wheeler off the truck 🏴👍🏻
Swivelling front sidelights with machine guns behind, armour plate for the rear window and it even has a skylight for the ejector seat ! It's already dropping oil on the road.
I used to know a guy who had 2 of these on his driveway. Theres only one there now but still get a little tingle in my childish brain whenever i see it.
The audacity of fitting a 110mph speedometer.
They were dreaming...
I haven't laughed so much in ages; well done you 🤣
The Rialto owner’s forum is going to be 🔥 tonight.
Just wait until Mr Hewes fits a 1200cc screaming bike engine into it, lol
Absolutely love it. Tape it firmly together, paint it sand and spinach and teach Ted to drive it.....perfect for those lunch runs...
I only recall ever seeing a Robin Reliant dealer at that was 'Palins of Derby' in the late 1980's/early 90's. Never saw another who'd take the shame. Mr Hewes has now taken the mantle of that burden.
Pye Hill motors in Weymouth was another dealer!
This little beauty deserves nothing but a full resto . One of Tamworth's finest . By the way , did you know Princess Anne used to have a Scimitar.
Brilliant cars they are a lot of fun ❤❤
You will love it 👍👍
Turn it into a pick-up (with dual axles, of course). Then put 'Santa' on the back, surrounded by lights and a loud sound system, and parade it through the local towns and villages.
Some webber carbs, a huge air filter and a straight pipe and it'll be an absolute weapon. 😎
You could make a series out of you just going around and buying the most shoddy cars you can find because this was hilarious.
Turn it into a budget off road military vehicle, complete with a crane or gun and camo paint job.
Had a mate worked for a Reliant dealership in Newmarket years ago. Borrowed a new Robin one lunchtime. Took it round a local multi-story carpark. Had to resign before he was sacked.
Princess Ann had a Reliant Scimitar. Which I believe was quiet a good car and not a Reliant Robin. Great vid
If it survives a week it's only because either because Joe has forgotten where he left it or because Jack puts it on a roof somewhere. 😂😂😂❤❤❤😂😂😂
What a bargain!
*And* he gave you a free bag of spanners! 😄
I do hope Ted approved of the use of his money
Well that gloopy stuff repaired the big ends nicely.
Pulling a wheelie in a Reliant Robin has to be a first!! Excellent entertaining video 👍😃😃😃🚜

I remember my granddad having a Robin in a light tan color, me and my brother used to love riding in it it was awesome.
