So a big thing about reducing waste, is a lot of people assume they have to buy things to replace the disposables. Just use what you have first. For going out, instead of buying cutlery to take along, just take some from your drawer. If you really want to reduce your waste, look at what you throw away and go from there.
I think this depends on your lifestyle. If you carry your cutlery in your purse you might prefer a lighter option like bamboo, or if you have to go through security for work, travel, etc.
@@alynawatersmusic THIS! And also, my cutlery at home is not very transport friendly. It's quite big and the forks and spoons are very "curved", so they take up a lot of space in my bag. I use the 20 year old camping cutlery that my parents bought for day trips.

For anyone looking to make the dryer balls: I personally use them and love them, but be careful with the essential oils. They were really loading that ball up but I recommend 1-2 drops per ball. Otherwise you risk the oil transferring to your clothes and staining. I speak from experience so be careful guys.
Maggie Abimbola I’ve been using essential oils on my dryer balls for about a year and haven’t had any problems like that. I guess you’d have to make sure you’re using real oils and not ones that include anything extra, as I could see the additives some brands use being flammable. Also another reason to only use 2 drops per ball.
Or you can take a spoon, fork and knife (and a pair of chopsticks) from your regular set to bring with you! No need to buy anything new if you can repurpose something you already own :)
Another option is to buy cutlery from the second hand shops, often they'll have loose and mismatched cutlery because if you're like me, I don't let my normal set leave the house in fear of making the set odd 😮

We are kindof just going backwards in time. Before we had all this plastic desposible stuff, people used stuff they had to wash or clean and use again and again and again, like the mop! And they used paperbags and glass containers!
If u visit places like China, Pakistan and India, this kind of lifestyle is still exercised, plastic use and disposal materials are more common in America (just telling the statistics not being prejudice)

This duster thing is completely useless (reusable and purchasable - both), it's just throwing dust from surface in to the air. Easier and more hygienic option is just to dampen the cloth piece (you can use stained sweater as well) and just wipe the surfaces with it (no plastic handle needed), when cloth gets to dusty, just rinse it out in sink and continue cleaning.
haneulk7789 no, it doesn’t. In my country, those dust things don’t even exist, we use a dampen cloth piece and we wipe the floors with it, then rinse it, take the dust out of it and finish cleaning 👍🏻

I just bought a pack of 4 cleaning cloths at my grocery store with different purposes: duster, windows/glass, multi use washcloth, and electronic screens. The duster works so perfect and I can just wipe all those things down and wash them in a load of towels! The duster worked fine after I washed it too - I haven’t even grabbed for my swiffer duster at all. Only helpful when I have to clean the ceiling fans.
Another thing to do with your used coffee grounds is to stir them into the soil at the base of your roses and gardenias or any other acid loving plants for a free fertilizer.

I carry my old set of child sized metal cutlery with me. It's convenient because the set is just a shorter and maybe a hint smaller version of adult cutlery so it doesn't take that much space and the metal knife cuts better than a bamboo one😊
Wolford has also recently launched a special sustainable line (Cradle to Cradle), I don't know too much but I think the products are petroleum free. But even disregarding that, Wolford and Falke both produce exclusively in Europe and their tights last for ages! 5+ years! Even the sheer ones! The 50 or 70 denier tights last even longer. And the Falke socks last for 10 years, no holes!
Since we‘re honest though...electric toothbrushes clean the teeth much better, no dentist would recommend going with a hand brush nowadays. Plus, those natural fiber toothbrushes (as well as cleaning brushes) break down very fast, which is especially annoying, considering the high price. And, you know...just put regular (thrifted) stainless steel cutlery in a little bag and carry that around. No need, to spend a ton of money on a new set of (probably also expensive) bamboo cutlery...which kinda looks big and unwieldy as well...not to mention, it’s way less hygienic. And yes, I realize, I‘m a bit of a ‚Debby downer‘ here. And I really applaud the spirit of this video. I‘m all for sustainability and not using as much plastic and all that. But the solutions should be practical and (preferably) inexpensive, or people will not use them. I tried a lot of this stuff, over the years, and some of it just isn’t very well thought through.
I totally agree with the bamboo cutlery. Plus wood / wood like things in your mouth feel very weird. as do paper straws - I cant stand them and i carry a stainless steel one with me.
Some bamboo brushes actually use plastic bristles! So they’re not 100% biodegradable. Also, manual toothbrushes clean teeth just fine if you do it for 2 min. Electric toothbrushes are really essential for people who don’t put in the proper effort to keep their teeth clean
also people who suggest those sorts of things as a fix all for everyone, quite often forget about those with (for example) germ phobias/anxieties or OCD who cannot just bring dirty silverware with them everywhere or even those who have to use those disposable versions of products. also those with physical disabilities won’t be able to carry silverware or water bottles with them everywhere like that. in general I find a lot of the eco-friendly and no waste/minimalism movement to be not very inclusive of those with disabilities and mental illness, which is rly worrisome. like obvs there’s certain things besides that those people can do, but the expectation that it’s a fix for everyone is kinda ignorant. (not blaming The Sorry Girls here btw, their hearts are in the right place; just a general observation about the current trend of no waste lol)
I do generally agree with you - I'll just mention that bamboo cutlery set has an advantage making through security checks. When I was carrying my steel one I got into some issues during security checks in the city, eventually it got confiscated by airport security. What I'm saying is, before you make your purchase, consider the reason while you're getting it - if it's for carrying around the city that has no security checks, go for steel one, it has many advantages! If it's specifically for travelling, including air travel, wooden one is probably better to get.

A lot of these things are American. I'm from Europe but I went to college in the US, I still can't for the life of me understand why so many cleaning supplies in the US are not re-usable. The whole single use sweeper things (swiffer is the brand i believe) blew my mind the first time i saw it. Everyone has them and they are so unnecessary and wasteful.

You can switch out shampoo in plastic containers out with shampoobars and soapboars! Shampoobars doesn't contain harsh chemicals, so it's better for your scalp. Using a shampoobar has enhanced my curls! Love it!
I love how you guys are positive and encouraging about eco friendly products!! I've had SO many people be very judgemental and negative towards me when they see that I'm not using an eco friendly product. Like one time, I forgot to bring my reuseable straw and the drink that I had needed a lid&straw combo so I reluctantly too a plastic straw. And this girl saw me using a plastic straw and started berating me about using plastic and killing the environment and killing sea turtles! She had no idea that I had just forgotten my reuseable straw (ya know, bc I'm human) and it was so disappointing! So long story short, THANK YOU for being understanding and realistic about how it is difficult to be eco friendly, but not impossible!! Keep on keeping on!!!!
I wouldn't recommend using this scrub on your face because coconut oil is comedogenic and sugar is too harsh for the skin. I would only use it gently on the body, and not in sensitive areas.

Yes, that is specially true for plants that need to keep a little more moisture than your other plants as the grinds usually retain moisture but are also great as fertilizer. I have used it on my roses and specially in drier warmer months my plants seem to the thankful

I know this isn't the point of the video but if you want to throw out the thing your dusting with why not use a paper towel? But having said that my family just uses holey socks for dusting easy to wash and you can easy use them with cleaning sprays
I have the exact same duster they showed and I don't throw the pad away. I shake it out and rinse off as needed. It dries and is ready to be used again.
I don’t know if you have seen them before but a company called “4oceans” sells bracelets made from rubbish they get from the ocean. The beads are recycled sea glass while the cord is recycled plastic and for each bracelet sold, 1 pound of rubbish is removed from the ocean. I got one for Christmas and I love it so much
I love your eco-friendly videos! Everything little thing we can do is helpful. My trick at the grocery store is to use the paper mushroom bags if I do need to wrap something up or protect it. I use them for everything - the bulk section there too, and you can write the number right on the bag. Please be careful with essential oils around animals - Danny should be okay with diffusing oil in a well-ventilated place, but I recently wrote an article about the dangers of essential oils with help from a veterinary team and they all agreed that essential oils and cats don't mix. I know two people who have lost their cats to the inability to metabolize diffused EOs. Other small critters are also at risk.
I use regular white vinegar as fabric softener! My clothes are static free, they don't smell like vinegar (they actually just don't smell like anything at all) when they get out of the dryer and it's way better for your clothes and the water sources! ESPECIALLY WORKOUT CLOTHES! Do not use softener on your performance fabrics! It coats the fibers, traps the sweat in and prevent them from being as absorbent! If your workout clothes have that nasty smell that you can't seem to wash out anymore, this is why!
I picked up some bamboo makeup brushes today by a brand called ecotools - cruelty free, recyclable and 100% vegan. I live in the UK but I believe the brand is also available in Europe, the US and Australia :)
Can confirm: Canadians use tea towels. I've never used them to wash the floor or dust, but I've used "rags", which just essentially are old tea towels! "Tea towels" are exclusively used in my house for drying dishes and hands in the kitchen. Chalk it up to semantics

Or you could have random tiny shelf that are small and hold like 1 or 2 things on. And for the slant tapestries ate a really cute cheap way to decorate ceilings and since it's slanted. Could be fun. Or you could paint something cute on it!

I'm from Louisiana. After having been to a foreign country and seeing just how populated it is in Europe. It really made me rethink the zero waste/eco friendly living. One day the US may be that over populated and I'd like to still have clean and green opportunities. I live in a rural area, so no recycling atleast for an hour + drive. I've opted to do the compost since I can't actually recycle. And yes when shopping I get frustrated with all the plastic, like why? And wouldn't paper options be cheaper? I know when we were in Greece, everything we purchased was given to us in paper containers. Also for any women reading this, switching to reusable menstrual products has been soo much easier and cheaper. Just get the diva cup and some washable pads! Game changer. And your waste doesn't stack up in a land field somewhere with all the other women's waste in your area 😫
For the fabric softener/dryer balls, you can also thrift a 100% wool sweater and either unravel or cut into strips and wind those up, and then wind yarn around the outside.
One of the reasons the vegeatables are in a package is because it makes it cheaper. You don't have the option to do a quality check when you can't see them as well. This makes it easier for the grocery stores to put less fresh produce in it
exactly, the ones that are wrapped are either from the floor, meaning they weren't picked from the plant but rather they fell of the vine, or they are older and had the outer layer peeled away to reveal a "fresher" layer, but u can't really tell because off the plastic in the way. This is why they are cheaper. 🤷🏼♀️
I gave up dryer sheets a while ago but I used up what I had and stopped buying. I crafted the used dryer sheets into little sachets with lavender from my garden and now my drawers smell lovely! These also make great gifts!
Another tip is put a DIY shopping bags inside each bag you use mostly, when going out. So you can avoid plastic bags while doing emergency groccery shopping.
The pantyhose have almost nothing to do with keeping the ball together except giving it shape. If you soaked it in hot water and rolled it between your hands for a while, it'll do the same thing, because Kelsey was right, you're felting the wool.
The pantyhose prevent the yarn ball from unraveling allowing the wool to felt. TIP...if you are doing multiple balls, you don't need to cut the pantyhose, just try a knot in between each one.

Thanks for the great ideas! I don't care for using the Norwex cloths for my face, etc. but they're great for dusting the furniture. I have stopped using anything with coconut oil on my face and body. Not only did it clog my pores, it also clogged my drains.
Quick tip! Don't bother with bamboo cutlery, it doesn't work very well (bamboo forks are pretty useless), isn't easy to clean and its money you don't need to spend. Instead, bring some of your regular metal silverware, metal straw and a pair of chopsticks with you! You can wrap it in a cloth napkin or make a little pouch from fabric scraps for them. Then wipe down when done and throw them in the sink when you get home :)
Great tips and ideas! Love this channel. When it comes to the coffee scrub I think some other, liquid oil would be best, coconut oil might clog sink/shower drains.
I made reusable produce bags out of mesh, super simple & pretty cheap, I just used a large weave mesh that I found in a remnant at the fabric store. I also used laminated cotton to make reusable ziploc bags, great diys that make you feel like you're making a big difference.

If you live in an area where you can't always avoid plastic bags and can't recycle them, make plarn or plabric with them. + if you don't want to make something from the plarn or plabric, sell it or gift it to a crafter.

L B I would imagine a small supply of fabric napkins would be good. They can just be thrown in with a wash. Edit: if your like me and have random bits of fabric you could make lots of mismatched ones pretty easily an then you could have different thicknesses for different things if you want too.
You can get like, a 20 pack of wash cloths at Walmart for a few bucks. Perfect for cleaning, just be sure to not cross contaminate by using one cloth for multiple things (like keep one for your kitchen counter and another one for your bathroom counter).
OMG you guys. Such legends! I've recently started making my own toothpaste and mouthwash. Also my trick to avoid clingfilm: tupperwares or old glass jars. It's so easy and saves so much plastic and also money. No need to get the bee wrap, just use what you already own. Also, I use an old jam jar instead of a to-go coffee cup. That way I don't have to worry about washing it every day, I can have as many as I need and rotate them. Absolutely free and looks cute. I make tumeric latte in it before I leave the house: fill with milk, microwave, add milk and sweetener, put on the lid and shake and you've got a yummy frothy latte!
About the bread thing? MAKING your own is also a good option. PLUS. You could customize it as much as you want. You want it sweet? You can do that! You want some bits in it like, fruit or chocolate? You can add it in! It's easy and some recipies only require like, two or three ingredients

i don't generally comment on videos to point out a mistake but as a coffee connoisseur, i feel it's my Duty™️ coffee grounds is the correct term you're looking for. grounds are what's created when you grind coffee beans coffee "grinds" refers to the actual grind of the coffee beans (i.e: a medium grind will create coarser, thicker grounds (more like chunks of the coffee beans) vs a lighter grind which will create thinner, more even grounds)
for reusable fabric softener sheets, I use old rags, dunk them in a mixture of liquid fabric softener and a bit of water, squeeze out the excess liquid and throw the rags in the dryer with the load. I bought a small bottle of liquid fabric softener like 5 years ago, and there's still lots left. and works just as well as the disposable sheets :)
I have heard that there are some tule tights that don't rip because they aren't made from that elastic material.But I don't know which brand actually produces them
Also hot tip: mason jars are amazing and if you just throw one in your bag (I use a 16oz graduated one) you can use it for everything like coffee and drinks at restaurants that otherwise use plastic (if it has measuring lines on it even better so the baristas have a guide for how much to pour), leftover food to take home from eating out, compost scraps that you get on the road and want to take home, and so much more! It is nice because you don't need to carry a bunch of different containers but really that one jar can save so much space, time, and the planet !!!
I found reusable mope heads at the local dollar store. Still something I'm buying but honestly I buy like 2 a year, tho I definitely rinse them out by hand before putting them in with my clothes in the washer.
Keep in mind that glass is reuseable which is good.However costs loads of energy for recycling and making. When you said it would be better to buy coconutoil in a glass jar. It is only better if you reuse the glass jar yourself
You can make your own washing powder using equal parts of baking soda and grated coconut soap (it has to be the 100% vegetable one). And you can also use vinegar instead of softener 😉
I like to use the French press whenever I want to make more than one cup, but I can understand if it's too much cleaning hassle for just a single quick cup. My recommendation for single cups is using an AeroPress. The cleaning process takes seconds and you can even replace the tiny paper filter with a stainless steel filter, if you want to go go as waste free as possible with coffee. :)

For the better panty hose/tights question I’ve never used them but I have heard from several sustainable bloggers that Swedish Stockings is a great brand of extremely durable tights made from recycled nylons and they take old nylons of any brand to recycle.
And what do you do with these bamboo cutlery after you are done eating, just throw it (while dirty) into the pouch and then in the bag? And good luck getting rid of lets say carry smell and coloration of this utensils, or salsa, or something garlicky. And even if you want dirty cutlery in your bag, why not just use a regular metal cutlery?
My set is just som normal metal cutlery that I bring with me, but I just put it back in the bag when I've used it and wash it when I get home. You can have a few bags to switch around (they're easily made from fabric scraps), so that you can throw the used ones in the wash if they get dirty.
@@Beaverthing I think that it's much easier to wipe off some left over food juices of the metal cutlery, so there must be much less issues with food smells in purse, but still seems odd. If I would do it myself, I most probably would wash my cutlery in the restaurants bathroom before putting it into bag.

I bring some of my regular cutlery around with me in my purse, they're really easy to wipe down with a napkin before putting them back in the little pouch I sewed for them. Then when I get home they go in the dishwasher and I grab a new set! If the pouch gets dirty it can get thrown in the wash or spot cleaned.
@@klear19634 Yes but I live in a larger household that runs a full dishwasher about once a week, it doesn't make much sense for me (or others in my situation) to not add the silverware to the dishwasher as it won't make a difference in our use. If you live in a smaller household that doesn't use a dishwasher, hand washing would be more appropriate. I'm not perfect, just trying to be better :)
We recycle alot. I am the crazy person that cleans out the coffee pods, recycles the plastic, and uses the grounds on the plants that love acid. Holly, Azaleas, and Hydrangeas are just a few. That was the only way I could make it OK for the environment and still use a Keurig. ✌🏻❤
No, the soapy water from the shower pretty much cleans it. Used it I bathtub and shower never had a problem. Also use coffee grinds with oil. Don't add the sugar as it microcuts your skin.
I switched to a beech wood toothbrush two weeks ago and there's no difference to me, I love it :) I thought beech wood is better than bamboo, because bamboo is an exotic wood, I hope there will be even more options soon! And I was really confused about the mop pads, in Germany it's normal to have one that's reusable, I've never heard of disposable ones, what a waste :O I've heard about a lot of zero waste shops opening here as well, so glad to see this movement! And yes , there may some issues or concerns for some people, but these are just SUGGESTIONS! If it doesn't fit you, find an alternative, that's suits you better :) Keep them coming, these are very helpful!

Plastic may not be cute but please remember it is essential for many in the disabled community to live as alternatives to things like plastic straws and utensils do not actually work like abled people assume they do for a lot of different reasons! There is a handy chart you can find online that explains why single use plastic is necessary. There are similar reasons why you find food wrapped in plastic at the store too!

I put my used espresso grinds with honey, olive oil, and salt for my face scrub (I'm allergic to coconut, I tried it with coconut oil and it made me itchy). It's nice and moisturizing and it lasts really long too because honey preserves it. It's also a great lip scrub because the espresso is finely ground.
If you press the coffee grinds between sheets of kitchen paper/paper towels to take out the moisture it helps the scrub to last longer and not go mouldy.
I made my reusable duster pad from old kitchen washcloths. I had to attach an elastic to tie it to the handle because it kept slipping off. I rarely use my dryer but I did make my own dryer balls from wool yarn and wool roving on the outside. We don't have dryer sheets in Norway
Another tip: Coffee grounds are perfect for gardening or putting inside your pots. It makes great mulch for your plants. Also, if you do buy bread in a bag, use the bag as a poopy bag for pets. Anytime I do get a bag of some kind when I buy bread, or I get a bag that is from an amazon package, I use those bags for my cats poop. You start to realize the things you don't need to buy when you start getting creative.
A tip for when tights rip: use clear nail polish to prevent a hole from growing, or if you catch the thin fabric. It's so, so useful especially since I wear tights around school a lot. It saves a lot of pairs and a lot of money.
So a big thing about reducing waste, is a lot of people assume they have to buy things to replace the disposables.
Just use what you have first.
For going out, instead of buying cutlery to take along, just take some from your drawer.
If you really want to reduce your waste, look at what you throw away and go from there.
Also remember, recycling is NOT the answer. Only a small percentage actually gets reused.

I think this depends on your lifestyle. If you carry your cutlery in your purse you might prefer a lighter option like bamboo, or if you have to go through security for work, travel, etc.

For anyone looking to make the dryer balls:
I personally use them and love them, but be careful with the essential oils. They were really loading that ball up but I recommend 1-2 drops per ball. Otherwise you risk the oil transferring to your clothes and staining. I speak from experience so be careful guys.
I've read that the heat can catch the essential oils on fire and that you shouldn't be using them in the dryer at all
Maggie Abimbola I’ve been using essential oils on my dryer balls for about a year and haven’t had any problems like that. I guess you’d have to make sure you’re using real oils and not ones that include anything extra, as I could see the additives some brands use being flammable. Also another reason to only use 2 drops per ball.

Or you can take a spoon, fork and knife (and a pair of chopsticks) from your regular set to bring with you! No need to buy anything new if you can repurpose something you already own :)
Another option is to buy cutlery from the second hand shops, often they'll have loose and mismatched cutlery because if you're like me, I don't let my normal set leave the house in fear of making the set odd 😮

We are kindof just going backwards in time. Before we had all this plastic desposible stuff, people used stuff they had to wash or clean and use again and again and again, like the mop! And they used paperbags and glass containers!

This duster thing is completely useless (reusable and purchasable - both), it's just throwing dust from surface in to the air. Easier and more hygienic option is just to dampen the cloth piece (you can use stained sweater as well) and just wipe the surfaces with it (no plastic handle needed), when cloth gets to dusty, just rinse it out in sink and continue cleaning.

In Mexico nobody uses those dusters at all. We do the wet cloth method
I just bought a pack of 4 cleaning cloths at my grocery store with different purposes: duster, windows/glass, multi use washcloth, and electronic screens. The duster works so perfect and I can just wipe all those things down and wash them in a load of towels! The duster worked fine after I washed it too - I haven’t even grabbed for my swiffer duster at all. Only helpful when I have to clean the ceiling fans.
This is the same concept at a Clorox wipe, so I don’t see how grime would be left behind? Either way sounds like a good idea
Another thing to do with your used coffee grounds is to stir them into the soil at the base of your roses and gardenias or any other acid loving plants for a free fertilizer.

I carry my old set of child sized metal cutlery with me. It's convenient because the set is just a shorter and maybe a hint smaller version of adult cutlery so it doesn't take that much space and the metal knife cuts better than a bamboo one😊

Wolford has also recently launched a special sustainable line (Cradle to Cradle), I don't know too much but I think the products are petroleum free. But even disregarding that, Wolford and Falke both produce exclusively in Europe and their tights last for ages! 5+ years! Even the sheer ones! The 50 or 70 denier tights last even longer. And the Falke socks last for 10 years, no holes!

Since we‘re honest though...electric toothbrushes clean the teeth much better, no dentist would recommend going with a hand brush nowadays. Plus, those natural fiber toothbrushes (as well as cleaning brushes) break down very fast, which is especially annoying, considering the high price.
And, you know...just put regular (thrifted) stainless steel cutlery in a little bag and carry that around. No need, to spend a ton of money on a new set of (probably also expensive) bamboo cutlery...which kinda looks big and unwieldy as well...not to mention, it’s way less hygienic.
And yes, I realize, I‘m a bit of a ‚Debby downer‘ here. And I really applaud the spirit of this video. I‘m all for sustainability and not using as much plastic and all that. But the solutions should be practical and (preferably) inexpensive, or people will not use them.

I totally agree with the bamboo cutlery. Plus wood / wood like things in your mouth feel very weird. as do paper straws - I cant stand them and i carry a stainless steel one with me.
Some bamboo brushes actually use plastic bristles! So they’re not 100% biodegradable. Also, manual toothbrushes clean teeth just fine if you do it for 2 min. Electric toothbrushes are really essential for people who don’t put in the proper effort to keep their teeth clean
I can't use electric toothbrushes because of sensory overload. I have severe anxiety disorders and the noise and the vibrating is a trigger.
also people who suggest those sorts of things as a fix all for everyone, quite often forget about those with (for example) germ phobias/anxieties or OCD who cannot just bring dirty silverware with them everywhere or even those who have to use those disposable versions of products. also those with physical disabilities won’t be able to carry silverware or water bottles with them everywhere like that. in general I find a lot of the eco-friendly and no waste/minimalism movement to be not very inclusive of those with disabilities and mental illness, which is rly worrisome. like obvs there’s certain things besides that those people can do, but the expectation that it’s a fix for everyone is kinda ignorant. (not blaming The Sorry Girls here btw, their hearts are in the right place; just a general observation about the current trend of no waste lol)
I do generally agree with you - I'll just mention that bamboo cutlery set has an advantage making through security checks. When I was carrying my steel one I got into some issues during security checks in the city, eventually it got confiscated by airport security.
What I'm saying is, before you make your purchase, consider the reason while you're getting it - if it's for carrying around the city that has no security checks, go for steel one, it has many advantages! If it's specifically for travelling, including air travel, wooden one is probably better to get.

A lot of these things are American. I'm from Europe but I went to college in the US, I still can't for the life of me understand why so many cleaning supplies in the US are not re-usable. The whole single use sweeper things (swiffer is the brand i believe) blew my mind the first time i saw it. Everyone has them and they are so unnecessary and wasteful.

You can switch out shampoo in plastic containers out with shampoobars and soapboars! Shampoobars doesn't contain harsh chemicals, so it's better for your scalp. Using a shampoobar has enhanced my curls! Love it!

I've had SO many people be very judgemental and negative towards me when they see that I'm not using an eco friendly product. Like one time, I forgot to bring my reuseable straw and the drink that I had needed a lid&straw combo so I reluctantly too a plastic straw. And this girl saw me using a plastic straw and started berating me about using plastic and killing the environment and killing sea turtles! She had no idea that I had just forgotten my reuseable straw (ya know, bc I'm human) and it was so disappointing! So long story short, THANK YOU for being understanding and realistic about how it is difficult to be eco friendly, but not impossible!! Keep on keeping on!!!!
I wouldn't recommend using this scrub on your face because coconut oil is comedogenic and sugar is too harsh for the skin. I would only use it gently on the body, and not in sensitive areas.
I use coffee grinds with olive oil for a nice simple exfoliator. I find sugar to cut the skin and it slightly burns under the hot shower.

Yes, that is specially true for plants that need to keep a little more moisture than your other plants as the grinds usually retain moisture but are also great as fertilizer. I have used it on my roses and specially in drier warmer months my plants seem to the thankful

I have the exact same duster they showed and I don't throw the pad away. I shake it out and rinse off as needed. It dries and is ready to be used again.
I don’t know if you have seen them before but a company called “4oceans” sells bracelets made from rubbish they get from the ocean. The beads are recycled sea glass while the cord is recycled plastic and for each bracelet sold, 1 pound of rubbish is removed from the ocean. I got one for Christmas and I love it so much
I love your eco-friendly videos! Everything little thing we can do is helpful. My trick at the grocery store is to use the paper mushroom bags if I do need to wrap something up or protect it. I use them for everything - the bulk section there too, and you can write the number right on the bag.
Please be careful with essential oils around animals - Danny should be okay with diffusing oil in a well-ventilated place, but I recently wrote an article about the dangers of essential oils with help from a veterinary team and they all agreed that essential oils and cats don't mix. I know two people who have lost their cats to the inability to metabolize diffused EOs. Other small critters are also at risk.
I use regular white vinegar as fabric softener! My clothes are static free, they don't smell like vinegar (they actually just don't smell like anything at all) when they get out of the dryer and it's way better for your clothes and the water sources! ESPECIALLY WORKOUT CLOTHES! Do not use softener on your performance fabrics! It coats the fibers, traps the sweat in and prevent them from being as absorbent! If your workout clothes have that nasty smell that you can't seem to wash out anymore, this is why!

The reason the wool yard doesn't unravel is because the heat and pressure from washing and drying it actually felts the yarn together.

I'm from Louisiana. After having been to a foreign country and seeing just how populated it is in Europe. It really made me rethink the zero waste/eco friendly living. One day the US may be that over populated and I'd like to still have clean and green opportunities. I live in a rural area, so no recycling atleast for an hour + drive. I've opted to do the compost since I can't actually recycle. And yes when shopping I get frustrated with all the plastic, like why? And wouldn't paper options be cheaper? I know when we were in Greece, everything we purchased was given to us in paper containers. Also for any women reading this, switching to reusable menstrual products has been soo much easier and cheaper. Just get the diva cup and some washable pads! Game changer. And your waste doesn't stack up in a land field somewhere with all the other women's waste in your area 😫
For the fabric softener/dryer balls, you can also thrift a 100% wool sweater and either unravel or cut into strips and wind those up, and then wind yarn around the outside.
One of the reasons the vegeatables are in a package is because it makes it cheaper. You don't have the option to do a quality check when you can't see them as well. This makes it easier for the grocery stores to put less fresh produce in it
exactly, the ones that are wrapped are either from the floor, meaning they weren't picked from the plant but rather they fell of the vine, or they are older and had the outer layer peeled away to reveal a "fresher" layer, but u can't really tell because off the plastic in the way. This is why they are cheaper. 🤷🏼♀️

I gave up dryer sheets a while ago but I used up what I had and stopped buying. I crafted the used dryer sheets into little sachets with lavender from my garden and now my drawers smell lovely! These also make great gifts!
Another tip is put a DIY shopping bags inside each bag you use mostly, when going out. So you can avoid plastic bags while doing emergency groccery shopping.

The pantyhose have almost nothing to do with keeping the ball together except giving it shape. If you soaked it in hot water and rolled it between your hands for a while, it'll do the same thing, because Kelsey was right, you're felting the wool.
The pantyhose prevent the yarn ball from unraveling allowing the wool to felt. TIP...if you are doing multiple balls, you don't need to cut the pantyhose, just try a knot in between each one.

I have stopped using anything with coconut oil on my face and body. Not only did it clog my pores, it also clogged my drains.
Quick tip! Don't bother with bamboo cutlery, it doesn't work very well (bamboo forks are pretty useless), isn't easy to clean and its money you don't need to spend. Instead, bring some of your regular metal silverware, metal straw and a pair of chopsticks with you! You can wrap it in a cloth napkin or make a little pouch from fabric scraps for them. Then wipe down when done and throw them in the sink when you get home :)

Honestly, the best tights I've ever owned are dance tights. Look for Capezio or similar dance brands.
I made reusable produce bags out of mesh, super simple & pretty cheap, I just used a large weave mesh that I found in a remnant at the fabric store. I also used laminated cotton to make reusable ziploc bags, great diys that make you feel like you're making a big difference.

You can get like, a 20 pack of wash cloths at Walmart for a few bucks. Perfect for cleaning, just be sure to not cross contaminate by using one cloth for multiple things (like keep one for your kitchen counter and another one for your bathroom counter).

I've recently started making my own toothpaste and mouthwash.
Also my trick to avoid clingfilm: tupperwares or old glass jars. It's so easy and saves so much plastic and also money. No need to get the bee wrap, just use what you already own.
Also, I use an old jam jar instead of a to-go coffee cup. That way I don't have to worry about washing it every day, I can have as many as I need and rotate them. Absolutely free and looks cute. I make tumeric latte in it before I leave the house: fill with milk, microwave, add milk and sweetener, put on the lid and shake and you've got a yummy frothy latte!

coffee grounds is the correct term you're looking for. grounds are what's created when you grind coffee beans
coffee "grinds" refers to the actual grind of the coffee beans (i.e: a medium grind will create coarser, thicker grounds (more like chunks of the coffee beans) vs a lighter grind which will create thinner, more even grounds)
I second the need for durable tights! Half the time I rip them just putting them on.

for reusable fabric softener sheets, I use old rags, dunk them in a mixture of liquid fabric softener and a bit of water, squeeze out the excess liquid and throw the rags in the dryer with the load. I bought a small bottle of liquid fabric softener like 5 years ago, and there's still lots left. and works just as well as the disposable sheets :)
I have heard that there are some tule tights that don't rip because they aren't made from that elastic material.But I don't know which brand actually produces them

Also hot tip: mason jars are amazing and if you just throw one in your bag (I use a 16oz graduated one) you can use it for everything like coffee and drinks at restaurants that otherwise use plastic (if it has measuring lines on it even better so the baristas have a guide for how much to pour), leftover food to take home from eating out, compost scraps that you get on the road and want to take home, and so much more! It is nice because you don't need to carry a bunch of different containers but really that one jar can save so much space, time, and the planet !!!

I found reusable mope heads at the local dollar store. Still something I'm buying but honestly I buy like 2 a year, tho I definitely rinse them out by hand before putting them in with my clothes in the washer.

You can make your own washing powder using equal parts of baking soda and grated coconut soap (it has to be the 100% vegetable one). And you can also use vinegar instead of softener 😉

I like to use the French press whenever I want to make more than one cup, but I can understand if it's too much cleaning hassle for just a single quick cup. My recommendation for single cups is using an AeroPress. The cleaning process takes seconds and you can even replace the tiny paper filter with a stainless steel filter, if you want to go go as waste free as possible with coffee. :)
Yesss! I also use frenchpress. It is way more cheaper than coffee cups.
me too! i think french press would be such a pain in an office setting though (plus i bet so many people have been gifted keurigs at this point who can switch over to the reusable cup)

For the better panty hose/tights question I’ve never used them but I have heard from several sustainable bloggers that Swedish Stockings is a great brand of extremely durable tights made from recycled nylons and they take old nylons of any brand to recycle.
And what do you do with these bamboo cutlery after you are done eating, just throw it (while dirty) into the pouch and then in the bag? And good luck getting rid of lets say carry smell and coloration of this utensils, or salsa, or something garlicky. And even if you want dirty cutlery in your bag, why not just use a regular metal cutlery?
My set is just som normal metal cutlery that I bring with me, but I just put it back in the bag when I've used it and wash it when I get home. You can have a few bags to switch around (they're easily made from fabric scraps), so that you can throw the used ones in the wash if they get dirty.
@@Beaverthing I think that it's much easier to wipe off some left over food juices of the metal cutlery, so there must be much less issues with food smells in purse, but still seems odd. If I would do it myself, I most probably would wash my cutlery in the restaurants bathroom before putting it into bag.
@@veganfreeadultemoindiehips2621 I agree, bamboo cutlery isn't that great. It's harder to clean and bamboo forks and knives are pretty useless. I bring some of my regular cutlery around with me in my purse, they're really easy to wipe down with a napkin before putting them back in the little pouch I sewed for them. Then when I get home they go in the dishwasher and I grab a new set! If the pouch gets dirty it can get thrown in the wash or spot cleaned.

@@klear19634 Yes but I live in a larger household that runs a full dishwasher about once a week, it doesn't make much sense for me (or others in my situation) to not add the silverware to the dishwasher as it won't make a difference in our use. If you live in a smaller household that doesn't use a dishwasher, hand washing would be more appropriate. I'm not perfect, just trying to be better :)
We recycle alot. I am the crazy person that cleans out the coffee pods, recycles the plastic, and uses the grounds on the plants that love acid. Holly, Azaleas, and Hydrangeas are just a few. That was the only way I could make it OK for the environment and still use a Keurig. ✌🏻❤

No, the soapy water from the shower pretty much cleans it. Used it I bathtub and shower never had a problem.
Also use coffee grinds with oil. Don't add the sugar as it microcuts your skin.
I switched to a beech wood toothbrush two weeks ago and there's no difference to me, I love it :) I thought beech wood is better than bamboo, because bamboo is an exotic wood, I hope there will be even more options soon!
And I was really confused about the mop pads, in Germany it's normal to have one that's reusable, I've never heard of disposable ones, what a waste :O

Plastic may not be cute but please remember it is essential for many in the disabled community to live as alternatives to things like plastic straws and utensils do not actually work like abled people assume they do for a lot of different reasons! There is a handy chart you can find online that explains why single use plastic is necessary. There are similar reasons why you find food wrapped in plastic at the store too!

The vast majority of people polluting the earth are humans that don't need adaptive items and this is to encourage them to make small but positive changes because they add up.

It’s a dig at disabled people because disabled people have to use disposable plastics, just like we do in hospitals. Consumerism is what causes the most waste, if you don’t like the way things in our environment are going stop supporting industrialization and stop trying to take away things disabled people are telling you they need because yes, they actually need them and no, you don’t know better than the disabled community. If you’re noticing people have problems with the way you’re saying things you should pay attention because there’s probably actually a problem. You need to work on yourself.

Some easy ones that I've used so far are reusable face wipes (just an old towels sewn into small squares), and a diy cloth holder for utensils!

I put my used espresso grinds with honey, olive oil, and salt for my face scrub (I'm allergic to coconut, I tried it with coconut oil and it made me itchy). It's nice and moisturizing and it lasts really long too because honey preserves it. It's also a great lip scrub because the espresso is finely ground.
If you press the coffee grinds between sheets of kitchen paper/paper towels to take out the moisture it helps the scrub to last longer and not go mouldy.
I made my reusable duster pad from old kitchen washcloths. I had to attach an elastic to tie it to the handle because it kept slipping off. I rarely use my dryer but I did make my own dryer balls from wool yarn and wool roving on the outside. We don't have dryer sheets in Norway
Another tip: Coffee grounds are perfect for gardening or putting inside your pots. It makes great mulch for your plants. Also, if you do buy bread in a bag, use the bag as a poopy bag for pets. Anytime I do get a bag of some kind when I buy bread, or I get a bag that is from an amazon package, I use those bags for my cats poop. You start to realize the things you don't need to buy when you start getting creative.
A tip for when tights rip: use clear nail polish to prevent a hole from growing, or if you catch the thin fabric. It's so, so useful especially since I wear tights around school a lot. It saves a lot of pairs and a lot of money.
