Incidentally, I was taught in Alabama history class that the state was named for the "Alabamos Indians" & it meant "thicket clearers." Granted, that was in 1984, our textbook was practically ancient, & I attended a very small county school with an even smaller BOE budget.
When I was in Houston long ago I was at a festival and some members of the Alabama Coushatta tribe were there. I asked one of them the same question and she said it meant 'light skinned'.
I attended a Catholic Mass in Spanish with a friend and he explained that the word ALABAMOS means "we praise". Don't know if that's accurate, but this fellow's brain would explode if he deliberately told a lie. "It's not a reference to our neighbors to the west..."
