      Sounds good to me. Unfortunately we are going to have to settle for the United Soccer League (The 2nd Division pro soccer league in the USA) team we are getting in 2019. If my information is correct. Major League Soccer is in the process of expanding to 28 teams. But... 1: Their are only two spots left that MLS hasn't awarded to a city already. And... 2: Birmingham never put in a bid so they are not even among the finalist for those last two spots. But... USL is growing and soccer is growing in general so it IS possible that Birmingham's USL team could become pretty popular and they might even build a stadium for it or possibly use the new downtown stadium that Birmingham is planning to build at the BJCC in the future. It won't be bad at all. :)

    • @riku1neo
      @riku1neo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, it is better than being in the 4th Division. Also, the chance to host say Toronto FC or even let the new Stadium host something like Manchested United vs MLS All-stars would be amazing. Or even just an exhibition of say Barcelona vs FC Kaiserslautern would be amazing! I think the youth would be great. The tree can only grow IF you plant the seed.

      You are so right that ship sailed years ago when Bear Bryant said he didn't want pro football in Birmingham they went to Tampa bay in fact the owner was a Bama graduate with a law school named after him. That was Birmingham chance.
      If Oakland St Louis, San Diego can't afford to keep NFL teams there is no way Birmingham can get a team it's a matter of time before they leave Jacksonville a TV market smaller than Birmingham. If Birmingham had built the Dome Stadium downtown back in the late 80's or early 90's like originally planned they may could've got the Oilers from Houston but they didn't so the franchise moved to Nashville along with Nashville tremendous success and growth there's no way the NFL NHL or MLS is leaving anytime soon

    A mls team will bring a higher income. Of a team like Real Madrid comes to Birmingham. People from different states or even countries will come over to watch the game in the stadium. Birmingham can be the new Atlanta in mls. Atlanta broke records for attendance and will host the mls all star game. A mls team in Alabama will bring lots of income if it host a mls all star game or even a game at the 2026 World Cup which is most likely to be in the states

    I could never figure out why Birmingham never got a team. The Americans/Vulcans drew well in the WFL and the Stallions did as well in the USFL.
    I did read that the Broncos nearly moved there in 1966 or 1967, I know Lou Saban went to Denver in 1967 and that's when Bears Stadium was starting to transform into Mile High, to meet the 50,000 minimum capacity that was stated in the terms of the merger.

      In the 1970s and the 1990s. The Minnesota vikings considered moving to Birmingham after the WFL folded. The vikings got the metrodome first when they couldn't deal with metropolitan stadium any longer. In the 90s, the owner couldn't find a stadium because of legion field. Red McComb chose to just sell the team.

    I think the main reason is simply that college sports are so huge in Alabama. An NFL team is an awful idea just because of their football teams, I only think basketball and hockey would work the best. However, with the NHL planning to expand to Seattle in the upcoming years, NHL isn't really an option either.

    After 10 more years or so of disappointment in Jacksonville, you could probably buy the Jaguars for cheap, they're that bad. It's already a damaged property but you guys in Alabama love an underdog story and it's not gonna get any better for the jags. Apparently the jags may move to London but we've already got at least 15 professional soccer teams in London, it's oversaturated. I'm all for a Alabama football team.

Jacksonville T V market is smaller than Birmingham but the NFL is looking global or larger markets I think Toronto, maybe the Austin- San Antonio area is booming in football crazy Texas. I think it's some kind of stadium technicalities that keep them from moving (lawsuits) but the NFL is not going to stay
      St.Louis,and San Antonio both have Dome Stadiums with large fan bases that's ready for a team

    Greater Birmingham is pretty small. Cities of comparable size with NFL, NBA, or NHL teams (MLB and MLS are only in larger cities) heavily subsidize them, often completely funding facilities. This is not wise, so it's good that Alabama and local municipalities have not done so in the Birmingham area. Keep enjoying the Tide, Tigers, Blazers, Jaguars, Trojans, etc. instead.

    • @TheFranchiseCA

      James Johnson The Packers were part of the league when it was a small, regional, and semi-pro organization. They haven't moved because they are the only publicly held major pro sports franchise, and nearly all shareholders are locals. No league is interested in creating another similar circumstance, so comparing any other city or team to Green Bay and the Packers is fruitless.

      Not that we an get a team for that league either. Just saying. It's not just the Big 4 anymore. It's starting to become the Big 5. A case for it is attendance... MLS attendance has already surpassed the NBA and the NHL. The only thing keeping it from always being thought of as one the Major pro sports leagues is just the way people think. MLS is New compared to the other 4 pro sports leagues... So people just haven't got it in their minds to think of it when someone ask them about pro sports in the USA. It's growth into the mainstream is the only thing keeping it from truly turning the Big 4 into the Big 5. But it's going to one day. Because it's following is strong in the realm of younger people, college educated people, and immigrants/people of foreign ethnicity.

      You ALMOST had one. The "Boston" Patriots bounced around, playing "home" games at Nickerson Field, Alumni Stadium, Harvard Stadium, Yale Bowl and Fenway Park. In 1968, the Patriots had a scheduling conflict with the Red Sox, and had to play a "home" game at Legion Field in Birmingham. The city Government knew all about Boston's stadium issues (Tom Yawkey wanted to build a dome, and could have paid for it himself; but Boston refused to cooperate). Birmingham was willing to give the Patriots a blank check, and build an ultra-modern football stadium for them. Owner Billy Sullivan was determined to make the Patriots succeed in New England, and turned them down. Eventually, Sullivan built the CHEAPEST privately-financed, permanent stadium that ever existed: Schaefer Stadium. It wasn't much, but it saved the team.
