He's a master (He trained as a canter), but the show's producers turned on autotune without his permission (Conan apologized for it). This is an absolute masterpiece of a performance. Paul Simon wrote a warning for us in the 60s... and David Draiman screams in frustration that we ignored it.

The sheer masterly of his control puts me in awe of him. Knowing he was sick that day makes it even more incredible (and no, he DIDN'T need the auto tune they stuck in.) The S &G version was a warning, this is the reaction to the fact that it was unheeded.

The guitar player for the band really wanted to do this song, when he approached David he said he didn’t know if he could slide up so many octaves like that, he went into the studio and practiced and got it down. And was proud of himself he could do it, the fact the producers of the show slipped in the auto tune without his knowledge due to the fact that it got out that he had a slight cold he felt was an insult.
He was not happy about it.

This version moves me every time I hear it. In my view, Paul Simon’s words were absolutely prophetic. Together, He and Art Garfunkel presented this song to us as a warning, bathed in the honey of their incomparable voices. Now, 60 years on, comes Disturbed. The way they present this song brings us the realization that Paul’s prophecy has come true. “And the people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made” and “Fool, said I, you do not know. Silence like a cancer grows” also “People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening”. Aren’t we there? We communicate electronically every day. We find love online. We now work from home, shop online and text our family members in the next room. We rarely even call each other any more. We worship our cell phones even when we are face to face with family and friends. I’ve spent entire days where I’ve “talked” to multiple people, yet never used my vocal chords even once. There’s so much more.
This brilliant version moves me in ways few songs have.

“People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening”
To me, this means something different than you described. This is the political state we're at.
In the political realm, every day people talk without really saying anything real. But more importantly, is that people hear what they want to hear. They hear someone's argument and read what they want into it. That's the people hearing without listening.

As this version was the first confrontation with Disturbed's version of Sound Of Silence, I never felt the urge to check out the musicvideo. It was your reaction to it, that invited me to. Then I also was very impressed with the buildup and the imagery of that video. Still I am always going for the live music prior to the videoimages and studio recordings. And a live version like this is quite rare to begin with. As for the autotune, it was used sparsely because David was sick, he had a cold, I believe. You have a great ear for detail! And when he came in with the first line, you actually hear him fade in on the word 'hello', maybe to make sure he'll hit the right note at once?
Thanks for taking the advice many of us gave you to react to this performance. I can't get enough of it.

Where David sings, "and the people bowed and prayed to the neon g-d they'd made", I think Draiman's Jewishness comes out especially in those words, since the first time we were liberated from Egypt, some of the people worshipped a golden calf. In this song, they're bowing and praying to a neon g-d. Not much difference.

So, the guy playing the piano is Dan Donogan, the bands guitarist. He was carrying the guitar in the video. The guy playing the tympani drums is Mike Wengren, who was reaching for the drum in the video. He's the band's drummer. I didn't read through all the comments, so someone may have already told you that long ago.

Although I have watched the music video several times this is my favorite by far. Thank you for the reaction.

11:45 I'm sure the emphasis on the long N of "silence" isn't an accident and is worth you analysing. From what I've seen of vocal coach videos on TH-cam, it's pretty common in rock/metal to not have open vowels (as would be preferred in an orchestral choir or something "sileeeeence") and instead emphasise the consonant "silennnnce". They also say that rock/metal vocalists sometimes bare their teeth which helps get the tone across, and this is also true in a long N like this.

His tone man....his TONE is freaking ridiculous. And you're not over analyzing the vocal inflections. The way he sings "silennnnnnnnnnnnnnce" gives maximum effect to the delivery. I love it.
Now let's talk about that rasp.......😲.
Btw, I love how you're all giddy at the end...lol. I was the same way.

One thing that happened after his performance made history, when their website crashed and the phone was so jammed up , people couldn't call in.over thousand of people wanting to know what just happened here ? It made history. He was sitting down because he had been in the hospital the night before with a high fever. He got out of a sick bed to do this show.paul Simon sent an email and told him that the song was his. And Paul has it as number one on his playlist.

My wife doesn't even like metal, and she was blown away by David's stage presence. You should check out the live version of "A Reason to Fight." it absolutely brings me to tears every single time.

7:20 "Pull up the bows, go ahead and get that ready. We're about to rock the world here in a second." I must have watched the Conan version a dozen times but never noticed the orchestra getting ready to unleash their magic. You have great attention to detail that adds a bit of richness to the Conan version that will make it that much more enjoyable the next time I take it all in.

He was so ill at the time that he had the stool to sit on so he wouldn’t fall down. Two other performers that sounded as good or better live . Queen with Freddie Mercury in every song he ever sang. And Journey back when Steve Perry was the front man. Best bet for Freddie to get the widest array of songs is the Wembley in 1986 concert and for Journey it would be the Don’t Stop Believing Tour in 1981. If you want another example of a true professional musician stepping up and doing his job The Queen at LiveAid Wimbley 1981 Freddie was so ill his doctor advised him not to go on. Like the man always said, Show Must Go On.

This version is a Persian rug of a song. Perfection in the little imperfections. I know exactly what you're driving at. The 'Persian rug' metaphor is one I reserve for only the best musicians who sound just as good live, without autotune. Listen to 'Wind of change' by Scorpions recorded, then live. You'll know what I mean.

I have watched professional vocal coaches reacting to Mr. Draiman who point out the control of his vocal fry (his growl) by the fact that he uses it where he WANTS to and then cuts it off for his final words.
