Me too! The first time I heard them I was a kid watching the Andy Griffith show, that was my introduction to bluegrass and I've been hooked ever since! Like Briscoe Darling would say "If you got time to breathe you got time for music"!
@kystars Yes, I think Rodney is the last surviving member of the band. But the others passed only recently, in the last ten years, so they all had some degree of longevity, which they certainly deserved for making so many people happy.
Has anybody heard DOUG DILLARD's collaborations with GENE CLARK of THE BYRDS?...Outstanding stuff!!! I'm a 68 year old metal head but i have always like Blue Grass and The Dillards were the best around!!!
These guys were so good you can see why they were so popular on TAGS. Even got noticed by Judy Garland. We need shows like this again with real talent.
I got to be their driver for a gig they had in my hometown. They were in really no nonsense business mode in the car, one worried I'd make a wrong turn in my OWN town , population 3000. On stage, they were hilarious.
I'm a 58 year old rush the who and Kansas fan also sabbath and this stuff grabbed me about ten years ago and I'm in! Doc Watson to gospel bluegrass and Appalachian stranging it's all very good stuff
Thank you for posting! I’ve loved the Dillards since seeing them on the Andy Griffith Show several times. Sometimes I wish I could trade my life of classical piano for being in a bluegrass group.
Music is a great release from all the other media. Especially blasts from the past. If you could post some tunes from Mr. Boots Randolph, I think it would be much appreciated by many. Boots had the big sax solo on Brenda Lee's Rocke'n Around the Christmas Tree
It was the Kentucky Colonels featuring Clarence White and Roland White that played this tune on the Andy Griffith show not the Dillards aka. Darlings .
Nevermind the low brow hillbilly humor. This kind of music wasn’t respected in those days. Behind the clowning around was a group of accomplished musicians and singers at the top of their game.
I could be wrong but I believe Doug is the only one of the original Dillards that is still alive. I also believe that Maggie Peterson (Charlene Darling) also has passed on.
On the Live Almost album, it says, "I'll never marry an old man, I'll tell you the reason why. His lips are all tobacco juice, and he never zips his fly." Maybe the fly being unzipped was forbidden on TV then.
I grew up listening to this wonderful music.
So good to hear it again.
im a 15 year old metalhead but what the hell blue grass is life changing
same from another 15 year old metelhead
Yes it is! For the most part, it is also just plain FUN!😅❤
Bluegrass has the energy of metal but with acoustic instruments.
You should hear Flatt and Scruggs Dear Old Dixie if you think this is good!! Or Raymond Fairchild Woah Mule
Look up New Grass Revival
I wish they didn't play this song; it always makes me cry.
Ya gotta fight it!
😊😊😊😊Naw the one that made Charlene cry was
Hit your granny with a big ol stick.
Yes, Sir! I remember the Darlings!
Why would it make you cry?
Are you out of moonshine?
Hilarious. Good job…
They made such dazzlingly pure virtuosity look effortless.
I'm in shock🎉😂
They were consummate professionals.
Love Bluegrass and love, love, love the Darlings…I mean the Dillards.
Andy: "Mr. Darling, the Boys are kinda quiet tonight."
The Boys: (Four blank stares.)
Mr. Darling: "Oh, they're just overcome with emotion."
The Darling family episodes were the best. Loved the episode when Mr.Darling wanted to marry Aunt Bea.😊
I always loved it when they were on the andy Griffith show. I loved there music
Their, not there.
@@banjohappy " were wolf ? "
" There wolf ."
There’s always a spelling Nazi.
@frankstefini3392 there's always semi-literates.
Their. Dorry
They were the reason I liked bluegrass.
Me too! The first time I heard them I was a kid watching the Andy Griffith show, that was my introduction to bluegrass and I've been hooked ever since! Like Briscoe Darling would say "If you got time to breathe you got time for music"!
How can a performance done 61 years ago still be so enjoyable to hear and so much fun to watch?
I Agree! I think only Rodney is the only one still living. They were so great
@kystars Yes, I think Rodney is the last surviving member of the band. But the others passed only recently, in the last ten years, so they all had some degree of longevity, which they certainly deserved for making so many people happy.
Because great never gets old! ❤
“Just jump in when ya can sheriff…and hang on….”. If you know this, you are probably old, like me, or watch the reruns.
Mayberry !!!!!!!
Briscoe: "You don't believe I can get banjo sounds out o' this jug?"
Andy: "No!"
Briscoe: "Man's entitled to his opinion."
@@mikel5582 lol I remember that episode it's called The Darlings are coming
" you got time to breathe, you got time for music.
This was a classic performance by the Dillards. How Rodney could always have that dumbfounded look is pure comedy.
❤❤❤
This song makes me cry!😂
Yelp I remember Charlene
Ya just gotta fight it!
❤ Charlene is always in my ❤
@@lesmcc8103 still probably the best answer of the bunch.😀
Listen to “There is a Time”.
The warmth and joy that fills my heart when I hear this song!!!!
I never get tired of The Dillards! Master pickers, all of them..
Pickin' an' grinnin'!
I'm a pretty good picker too,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,when I let my pinkie nail grow a bit long that is
Always enjoyed watching this talent on Andy Griffith show. They were so talented.
When talent meant something
Boys are really excited today Mr Darlin
Or ...
*Andy:* "The boys are kinda quiet tonight."
*The Boys:* (Four blank facial expressions.)
*Brisco:* "Oh, they're just overcome with emotion."
@@57highland they’d all keyed up
Where's Mitch's pipe?
He only smokes when he's one of the Darling Brothers!

The Blazing Banjo of Doug Dillard!
Has anybody heard DOUG DILLARD's collaborations with GENE CLARK of THE BYRDS?...Outstanding stuff!!! I'm a 68 year old metal head but i have always like Blue Grass and The Dillards were the best around!!!
The Darlin Boys!
Dean Webb (RIP) was a family friend. ❤The Dillards were certainly early pioneers in contemporary acoustic Americana!
These guys were so good you can see why they were so popular on TAGS. Even got noticed by Judy Garland. We need shows like this again with real talent.
Comedy was always part of the act for bluegrass bands back then.
So talented and handsome. Keep laughing how they were on Andy Griffith..
These guys were great
I got to be their driver for a gig they had in my hometown. They were in really no nonsense business mode in the car, one worried I'd make a wrong turn in my OWN town , population 3000.

Git after that banjo!
I'm a 58 year old rush the who and Kansas fan also sabbath and this stuff grabbed me about ten years ago and I'm in! Doc Watson to gospel bluegrass and Appalachian stranging it's all very good stuff
Had the honor of attending a Doc Watson concert in Richmond Virginia, many moons ago. He. Was. Amazing. RIP, Doc.
Great old tune in the key of C
I saw them in the 1970's at Delmont, PA. They played in a bluegrass festival that included the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and June and Mabel Carter.
Play that flat top banjo Doug!!
They are fantastic and played the Darlings on the Andy Griffith Show.
Dillards on fiyah!!!🔥🔥👏👏♥
Andy loved em
Thank you for posting! I’ve loved the Dillards since seeing them on the Andy Griffith Show several times. Sometimes I wish I could trade my life of classical piano for being in a bluegrass group.
Classic Dillards, love this! ♥
What a fantastic bluegrass group! Thanks so much for posting. (It was great seeing Judy and Jerry, as well.)
Great musicians and great entertainers.
First got their live album in high school, over 60 years ago. Will always love their music and their humor.
RAY FAIRCHILD'S SONG IN MAGGIE VALLEY, N.C.
R.I.P. BROTHER RAY!!
My dad loves this song!
Love forever!

That one always makes me cry!
Hilarious and amazingly talented!
Talent is talent regardless of the genre.❤
That was great.
Thank you. Learn your musical history with a smile.
I watched Andy Griffith for years before realizing who the Dillards were.
I saw them as a kid at a Bluegrass festival, they were very entertaining, not just the music but their humor as well.
Good band and harmonies
October 1963...
Excellent, thanks for posting this!
Best episodes of The Andy Griffith Show were the ones with the Dillards!
Thank you for sharing this!
Talented cats
Heck yeah!👍! 👍! 👍!!! 👍
They remind me of The Darling Family from Andy Griffith
They are them
Ireland wants their music back!
Ireland can have her music. We'll keep our all American bluegrass!
They did this number on Andy Griffith.
It was the Kentucky Colonels featuring Clarence White and Roland White that played this tune on the Andy Griffith show not the Dillards aka. Darlings .
Looks like fun y'all.
When they were on the Andy Griffith show Harry Dean Stanton was with them on one episode
And Jerry Van Dyke. Good stuff!
Fabulous life affirming music,so well rehearsed!
He is clutching her with a frightening energy!
Great footage Dillards fan
Wow is all I can say. Amazing 🎉😂❤
fantastic talent
Theatrics,awesome
Nevermind the low brow hillbilly humor. This kind of music wasn’t respected in those days. Behind the clowning around was a group of accomplished musicians and singers at the top of their game.
This music still doesn’t get the respect it deserves. I only listen to bluegrass. Nothing better!
And quite young men too. I think at the time of this video, Rodney Dillard (guitar) wasn't much over 20 years old.
I could be wrong but I believe Doug is the only one of the original Dillards that is still alive. I also believe that Maggie Peterson (Charlene Darling) also has passed on.
Rodney (guitar) is the sole survivor.
Talent ❤
Ya cant get no better..
This sounds ten times better when played back at ,75 speed.
Missing Brisco and his jug
Lot of Dills right there...........
Great harmony
That’s the darlings
On the Live Almost album, it says, "I'll never marry an old man, I'll tell you the reason why. His lips are all tobacco juice, and he never zips his fly." Maybe the fly being unzipped was forbidden on TV then.
My favorite verse
He blows his nose in old cornbread and calls it pumpkin pie.
😂
Good, extra good!
Needs more jug!
G, C and D… warp speed.
Bluegrass IS Country Metal.
A DARLIN’ group.🤪
Mountain Metal. 🤘
Cool
Looks like Jerry Van Dyke is eyeing Judy Garland for later😉
I wish I’d been their hair grease supplier, I’d be a rich man!
LUBE !
The Dillards were a dilly!😅. 🤓😎✌🏼
The band from Andy Griffith, the Darlings.
Did the Dillards add the drummer before or after Douglas split with them?
Is that Jerry Van Dyke?
Looked like him. I read he turned down the lead role in Gilligan's Island for My Mother The Car
Where's Charlene?
From Andy Griffith show! Lol
anyone notice the bare feet? This song makes me cry.
None better.
Dirty me dirty me, I’m disgusted with myself……aw, that makes me cry
I believe this open c
It looks like C, but not open C. The guitar player is using fingerings for G-C-D, capo'ed up to C.
I got a better one "I wouldn't marry that old maid. Tellyou the reason why. She blows her nose in the cornbread and calls it pumpkin pie" 😅😅😅
You are a true blue grass lyricist
