When I bought my RV the finance lady offered a warranty that cost 25% of what the RV cost. I feigned a shocked look and told her I wasn’t told the RV was so bad that it would cost that much to warranty and stood up to walk out. Her reaction was priceless. She stopped trying to add stuff on.

I wish I could have seen this video a year ago. Camping World is a perfect example of an RV dealer that practices all these tactics. I did go through with my purchase, but I had to fight to get all the junk fees taken off. It was a terrible and stressful experience. I actually resent the fact that I went through with the purchase. Just purchased a White Hawk 29BH from Bish's (after visiting many other RV retailers) and found them to be totally honest with regard to fees. Yes, they wanted me to finance (who wouldn't) but when I told them it would be a cash sale, I still got the agreed upon great price. I drove over a 1200 miles and got the best deal ever. I was NOT going to pay the extra 2K for the walk thru fee at delivery at Camping World. Thank you Bish's for your honest business practices.

We pick up our new fifth wheel from the dealer tomorrow. I just went through the paperwork and the only additional "fees" on our paperwork are the addons WE asked for. The hitch for my truck, the modifications to the unit (tankless water heater etc) and an extended service contract that goes beyond the manufacturers end date on theirs.
The sales lady at our dealer asked for our budget, what we were looking for as far as features, length, weight etc. and when we asked for the out the door price, she had it in writing within 5 min from finance. The finance guy was straight and to the point, and at no time did we feel like they were pushing us into anything we didn't ask for.
We're in Tulsa, OK and the dealer we used was Bob Hurley RV. They didn't waste any time trying to upsell us or push us into anything we didn't want to see. Great dealer.

This is why you negotiate the out the door price. I don't care how you write it up. That's what I did when we bought our 2021 Alpha Wolf 26DBHL.
I just wish I would've known how bad the service department was at this dealership for getting warranty work completed. It took months to finalize and some things were never pushed through warranty and then charged us diagnostic fees for these items, which we were not told would be done. They cut a tire down in the shop and expected us to pay for it. Nope. I don't care what your sign says and policy may be. We took pictures of it and no tire was down. It took another 6 weeks to get a matching tire. They forgot to put our tire cover on the spare and I didn't noticed until I got it home. I called to see if they ship it , which a tech said they found it, but it's never shown up. Never again with them.

We made a tour of NW Ohio, Northern In, and southern MI and looked at several models. While we intended, and did pay cash, everywhere we went I asked for the OUT THE DOOR PRICE. When we got home, we thought about it a few days, called Bish back and gave a credit card deposit and asked for the amount we should make out the check for and that is what we paid. A year later we have many happy camping memories so far and that will continue when I retire next year

Then the finance manager tried to sale me all the extend warranty BS. He even tried to sell me gap insurance on a 54K purchase with 20K trade in plus 9K cash down. There was no gap that needed insurances. Needles to say I got my down payment and trade in back and walked out. I’m currently shopping for the same RV at different dealers. Josh, I think this one of the best vids that you have done. A great service. I want to add that if you are being "strong armed" into purchases.....walk, if not run. ALSO report it to your State's Attorney Generals Office. I saw too much BS in my career of people being taken advantage of. I'm lucky that my Daughter was a Attorney for our State's Supreme Court. Contacting the State's Attorney General's Office was her recommendation for unfair business practices.
One thing I have always done when buying a car from a dealer was make my offer " I have X amount of dollars, I HAVE to be out the door for that X amount of dollars". If my offer wasn't accepted initially, I walked. I had a couple of times when I would get a phone call the next day saying now they could do it.......I didn't go back, if I can't get the best price right off.....forget it.
Also "sleeping on it" is one of the very best things you can do. Amazing how getting away from the dealer, a good meal, a "cooling off" period can clear the head and make it possible to make a unemotional decision.
    Great video....Thank you Unc Josh!

Hey Josh, buyers can also be "pressured" into buying the extended contract, GAP insurance and other things. Not told it is required, but it is discussed and added to the contract which is brought to you be signed. When you see the total price and decide you don't want the extras, the finance people doubledown on selling the extra products to you. And in a moment of weakness you agree. The good thing is, there is a cancelation clause, but it has already been added to your loan which affects your term and payment. This happened to us at one of your Bish's dealers. Needless to say, we were not happy with the process, especially since we chose this dealer partly due to your videos. We are hoping to have a better experience with the service department.

It's hard to get your money back once you've discovered that you've been swindled. It helps to have a mean, vicious lawyer who can threaten a lawsuit, and then back it up by alleging fraud in the inducement and treble damages. Filing a claim with your state's attorney general's consumer protection division doesn't hurt, either.

When the salesman or especially finance manager asks “What do you want your payment to be?”after you ask for their best price, you should probably run as fast as you can. If the sign outside a used car dealership says “we tote the note”, run at the speed of light. Who benefits if you have to buy insurance that makes a payment if you can’t due to job loss? Hint, it’s not you, it’s the seller/finance company. If you are buying a new car, you can shop the protection plan or extended warranty across the Internet from another dealer before the 24-72 hour cancellation window expires. The manufacturer’s extended warranty price is negotiable and you can save a lot outside the finance manager’s office, or simply by relying on the vehicle’s manufacturer warranty and standard emissions warranty. Even with manufacturer financing, the rebate that you may receive for financing under the manufacture, a program will be likely be exceeded if you pay your loan off to completion at their higher rate. Line up your best financing before you walk in to the sales floor with a checkbook.

Thank you for the education for customers on this! I worked in auto sales for several years and it's very similar. I walked away from a car purchase once because the dealer had "mandatory fees" on every vehicle, "you have to get the paint package and extended warranty, all the cars come with it here". I will pay more for the better value/experience and I actually tend to buy an extended warranty if the price is right!.
When you are looking at the total picture, the cheapest is rarely the best and you'll get what you pay for. (Most people shop off price rather than value though)

In 1989 I worked at a Florida dealership and we had a book to go by it had a scale of pricing and color coded Green, White, and Red. Basically a motorhome could sell in the range of $35,000 up to $85,000. The RVs did not have price tags on them. Someone would ask how much is this 36 foot class A? I would have to go ask my boss. He would look at the book and he would give the highest price allotted in the book for that motorhome. Then the customer would have to come up with a counter-offer. Then I had to go back to my boss and he would counter-offer and say "If they balk at this price ask them how much would they pay and ask them to give you a check to show they are serious." I hated this practice but I was a dumb 24 year old and knew nothing. If the customer was a complete gullible person they take them to the cleaners.
I sold one 21 foot class C to a man. It was the least expensive Class C on the market for the brand. It should have sold for $31,000 and they got him after down payment and trade in for $51,000. I had no idea. The man came back 6 months later to buy our 36 foot Class A and he was soooo upside down. He came up to me and said "You got me." I felt so bad because I had no idea until after the deal how much he got screwed over. BTW, when he had come to buy the Class A I had already moved to the parts and accessories department. At least I could price things honestly there. This is why if I was anywhere near MI I'd buy from Bish's.

Really became apparent this year when my wife and I wanted to trade. I reviewed the paperwork from the original sale and what they were offering. According to their numbers, we were $16000 upside down on the loan. Keep in mind there were alot of hidden fees factored in as well. The most honest explanation I have ever seen. We went through a lot of this with a national dealer in Ohio. It ended up in a knock down drag out argument. We finally stood up and walked out, and they caved. A few years later, we traded up with our local dealer, all on a handshake, and they added nothing, no surprise costs, and no high pressure. If our local dealer doesn't carry our next RV, we will make the trip to buy from you.

@@lyfandeth absolutely yes. The lender has to make sure their RV is covered if damaged/totalled. Because it really is theirs not yours until you have paid in full.
If you dont keep it insured you would be in default of your loan and could have insurance force placed and cost added to your loan and that insurance will not payout to you it would payout to lender.
That being said they typically cannot dictate who your insurer is. They can have things like min insured amounts/type of coverage and maximum deductibles.
If you have a loan you absolutely need insurance on your rv.
To add clarity this doesnt mean GAP. I am talkimg about collision and comprehensive insurance.

Then i recently purchased from a local dealer 'buckeye rv'...and wow, the difference was night and day. Quick, simple, and not shady at all...only hitch, taxes and basic fees were added to the price.

Josh, you're right on again! You've got to play attention all along the way. So we traveled three states away to get the exact model travel trailer we were looking for. They damaged the underbelly installing the inverter for our solar (left a gaping hole). It took them three times to try to install it.(putting us up in a hotel several nights) They didn't even know we needed it😢 not to mention others issues, but the kicker was when we received our paperwork to register our trailer it showed we had paid $0. Actually we had paid cash in full. That finance manager was very disappointed we weren't financing, even trying to sell us on it. The sales team also made sure I found exactly what I was looking for at a price I was happy with. also a service tech walked around the RV with me at time of pick up at no cost to make sure everything onboard was working properly and made sure I knew how everything works and operates. Not necessarily true and most of the time doing it that way your credit would suffer long term (5 years) from doing that. I’ve never had any issues financing stuff for long periods with EXTREMELY low interest rates due to my credit score and credit history. For shorter term loans like you suggest sub 3 years, with my history and score I’ve never been quoted a interest rate higher than 3% on any purchase. To me it’s worth the small price of admission to further build my credit vs paying it in full immediately even tho most time I could.
I understand what your saying but it’s not always the right choice to pay in full if you ever wanna have a super high score.
Sucks I admit but it’s the world we live in and one day an emergency may arrive where we need to finance and if your credit history sucks you’ll have to take a high interest rate regardless because you didn’t play the system before hand.
To each their own that’s just my outlook.

I always walk in to any dealer(car, rv) and say, how much it this, I don't want anything else, no extra warranty, no gap, no paint protection, etching, lojack etc. Every single dealer as soon as I get to financing, the person goes through the entire list of add on crap, then acts rude when I continue to say no. One place I seen a Ram truck, 29k miles, 18k, was good deal. Called, said I was coming to see it 2 hours away, 30 mins before I got there, they changed price to 22k, when I seen that. I found a online ad they forgot to change. So they honored the 18k but wouldn't let me use the $150 off coupon they text me. After I bought it, I left review then they starting calling me to resolve issue. Also they came out(I have 810+ credit) nothing financed, own my home outright, quotes me 8% interest to finance. I said never-ending, my credit union will do it a 2.75%, then they came back with 2.5%, hate the scammy crap.

Josh I love your videos and ALL the great content.
Been watching you for about one year. So when I decided to sell my class C for a TT, I went to the closest Bish' s I had. Junction City Oregon.
I was super excited and then , sadly, EXTREMELY disappointed with the sales team.
I won't go into all the details here, but on topic, I was surprised to be told, they could save me money if I financed.
I was paying cash and made it very clear that I did not want to finance under any circumstances. They pushed on that a few more times.
Needless to say, they lost my business., for that and other under handed reasons.
Crazy, but why could I save 2k or more financing and why did they push? Save 2k, par tons more in interest. Beware
I really do appreciate ALL your videos, as you reveiled what to ask and when to walk.
I am more than happy to cross several state lines to work with honesr sales teams.

I'll have to run this up the chain to our customer support team to see if they can investigate and get some coaching in place as needed. That shouldn't have been the operating procedure though I fully trust what you're saying here

Love you're posts about campers.. BUT this one frosted me. Better check out your Iowa store before posting anything like this again. We drove 4 hrs. last August, bought a BEAUTIFUL camper BUT we're STILL battling... First our credit score got slammed when they processed the loan TWICE so we had TWO loan accounts entered... 3 months to get fixed, THEN got letter from Illinois Dept of Revenue that the taxes were incorrect and we owed more, PLUS penalties!! A month now of assurances it will be fixed - IL says not done, more owed AND NOW cannot get return calls. Better stick with reveiwing campers cuz Iowa just screwed your rep.

Great video appreciate all of the insight. If you don't mind, due to the current market conditions and labor shortages/issues I would also advise new buyers to ask the service department at the dealer what their current back log is on handling service issues. If you have an issue with your unit how far out are they are scheduling appointments. It is not fun to have a new unit that can't be utilized due to the service department being 6-8 weeks or more out on scheduling new service appointments. Thats not even considering the length of time that they will have it to handle the repairs and/or have to deal with the manufacturer to get warranty approval and parts shipped out.

_"They give the industry a bad reputation."_
It's reason #37 people feel they need to borderline treat their salesperson like trash.
There are, without a doubt, some shady salespeople out there. Being real - we try to weed them out but I'm sure there's a few even on the BIsh's team now. It's not always easy to identify.
But there are also good people out there -- not just the folks at Bish's but some very decent salespeople and organizations in general in the industry as well. I've met plenty of them.
