The New Black Superman Movie Is Extremely Misguided And Exploitative

  • The new Superman movie is, in my opinion, an absolutely horribly timed idea. I find it very interesting that nobody was willing to take a chance on this sort of character without substantial proof it would sell ahead of time and that this happened to be announced both on Henry Cavill's birthday and after the fallout of several horrific events that ravaged communities throughout the United States. I truly believe this move is motivated to make money off of a very hard couple of years and the feeling of disenfranchisement felt by many Black Americans in this country. #Superman #DCEU #DC

I hate that they force already established heroes to be black or gay or something like that, just so they can polish their brand's look.

@@apatek-1453 The problem is, if it's done poorly it's not gonna be good for anyone. They could easily use someone from the already established black supermen and possibly introduce him to those who didn't know about them yet, but they will just use the mainstream Superman and make him black. This just shows all they care about is money and their image, they shit all over the fans and I believe the black community too like this. I think a proper "black Superman" would be a cool addition to the movie industry if it's done properly. Look at Miles, they did not change Peter to black, they made a new (possibly better) Spider-Man who's their own character and not just Peter with different skin color.

WB just wants to catch up to Marvel because they just had a black Captain America and that’s popular right now. There's a little more to this news breaking that pisses me off. But it's not the race change. It's the fact that this not too long after The Rock announces how he's gonna try to get Cavill back in the role of Superman. It’s not like they can’t look outside and see what is happening in the world. Money doesn’t make them ignorant it makes them want more of it. The black community just need to realize whatever we do we won’t get the respect or recognition we deserve. But hey that black boy can dunk a basketball right or he can run a football down the field or he can make a lil rap song. That’s what blacks are associated with not their achievements and definitely not their contribution. People just need to look at reality for what it is. We are all slaves to the system it doesn’t matter what race you are the only thing that matters is that cash money and most of us have to sell our souls for it.

But I believe, that after they announced that they changed their mind, it made both black and white pissed off, because black people are saying WTF? We supported it because he was supposed to be based on the other Superman. I read. Up. On the guy who wrote the script? And it’s like who. I’m glad to be seeing more and more black people commenting on, this isn’t right, this was never anything we ever wanted WB to do, as it’s a very obvious attempt, to NOT make a good movie with a good storyline, but what they are obviously saying is basically that yeah, if ever there were a movie truly being made with an agenda, which this will be the most shocking, over all the other ones where they’re casting black actors in white roles, I’m hoping what this movie does, as it seems to be angering everyone, both black and white, into saying now they’ve gone too far. If there were a wish I can make? It would be that BLM quickly became a thing of the past, and we can truly find something like this, as a start in finally uniting this country. I never ever had a racist bone in my body. I’ve even said what happened to George Floyd never should have happened among many other horrendous things black people have dealt with over the years, because I’ve never thought anything poorly EVER in my life about them. Because there is good and bad in every race. I’ve had so many amazing friends and coworkers in the past who were black, and there isn’t not one of them, where the friendship ended, that I look back on and think nothing but only positive. Some black people seem to get mad when white people say that, which I’m not sure why, but they’ve come and gone in my life just as much as any white friends ive had in my life over the years. I actually have a tremendous respect for the black community, and know that most, do not even stand by BLM. On TH-cam, a young black woman was videotaping a white BLM supporter spray painting BLM on a building, saying this isn’t what we wanted . This is mostly white people doing this. We’re here to protest (for I believe was over George Floyd) and not do what this girl thinks she’s doing as a favor for us, that this is something the public will believe black people are doing. And just the way she spoke, speaking in a very educated way, saying she’s more or less embarrassed by these white supporters doing this shit, and I truly believed her one million percent. This just all has to come to an end. It probably would if the media, movie studios with shocking announcements like this, and politicians, stopped saying and doing things to stir up hatred because in reality, they are the ones responsible for the country still remaining the way it is, or just making things worst. Just don’t know anymore.

But I also thought black people deserve this, because they’re right, they’re sick of “sloppy seconds” as one man put it, ands ant new and original characters to hit the big screen, or even characters such as Calvin Ellis, who is more well known. These hollywood studios clearly don’t respect us enough to just adapt awesome existing black characters to the screen that have been sitting on the shelf for years or simply create an original character. Race Swapping all ready long established and beloved characters is just a Hollywood/Media token move. I’m pretty sure the Clark Kent/Superman is loved and adored by many black readers and viewers.
What this shows is that there are two major problems right now. Hollywood/Media would rather race swap existing characters because they just don’t have the creativity to make new characters and build those up to new audiences. Much quicker to take existing major characters and convert them to tick the minority box or quota they feel we must have in everything these days.
The second thing this shows is that existing black characters that are out there are obviously not that interesting or exciting, so they’d rather steal and convert the white characters. This just shows again the writing of the Black Characters needs to be improved to make them interesting and entertaining.

The sad thing is they'll never use already established OG characters who are black, cause it's a canary in the coal mine issue. These characters have no popularity and thus run the risk of not getting the attention they want them. Even though introducing them would actually be a good thing.
And as YoungRippa said, "They only see validation in classically white characters" and that's why this keeps happening in a habitual pattern. At the cost of robbing development of characters such as The Falcon, who does have prominence in the comics on his own, before the need to have him replace Steve Rodgers as Captain America.
Just let non white characters stand on their own and have faith in them is what I say. You have the rights, you publish the encyclopedias, just flip through them and take a pick.

As a African American/ latino this type of stuff that has been happening in shows/movies about comic book characters is annoying. I really enjoy seeing my favorite characters on the big screen but in my opinion this has been happening the most with D.C. Marvel in the comics and on the big screen is better with representation. They have more characters that are original race related characters. Their films that have those characters they do the best making it natural and not forcing it, and not making it really obvious that they are pushing towards a specific demographic knowing "we can cash out this way" or "this will really make these type of people watch this" D.C really needs more original minority characters and need to focus on making the ones that already exist more important in the comics and on TV. People who don't really read comics don't understand how it effects certain comic characters stories. D.C can handle race very poorly on TV sometimes

My point is tokenization for me is digestible to some degree but with how its done these days in modern Hollywood, it's really irritating and this whole black Clark Kent thing is not helping its case.
Some people even consider characters like Miles Morales, Sam Wilson's Cap or even She Hulk to be "tokenized" when they're just expansions upon already existing characters. I actually like these type of characters because it gives intrigue to the originals. Miles isn't tokenized because he's not Peter Parker, he's a different person, with different skills and different beliefs. Same goes for She Hulk and the others. A tokenized character imo is a character who tries too much to be like his/her predecessor while taking up their onus. It's why Miles and co stand out; they're not that.

Batwoman can be done way better on the big screen than on the cw to represent more of the lgbtqia community. Harley can even represent that same community.

It's taking advantage of the recent BLM situations.

As a black person, I agree. Ik it exists in the comics, but as a side detail. It was never intended to happen as the default. Superman is, for better or worse, meant to be a archetype of the perfect hero. Blue eyes, blonde (in this case black) hair, etc. It fundamentally changes who he is. In the defense of this, you could say the same about Sam Wilson Captain America. But that was done because they were close friends/allies. Not to pander. This however, is pandering. They chose to do this around the same time as BLM protests, SW Captain America, among other African American drama. They did this instead of pushing other black/asian/hispanic characters under their belt. Characters like: Duke Thomas (Signal/Robin), Bumblebee, Firestorm, Static Shock, John Stewart, Jaime Reyes (Blue Beetle), Renee Montoya, Cassandra Cain (Batgirl/Orphan), Ryo Choi (Atom). Made all the more atrocious by the fact that the posted this on Henry Cavils freaking birthday. You decided to pander to a community, my community, for positive press on your flagship characters birthday. Who, need I mind you, has been working with you for 8 freaking years. This is disrespectful, racist, and panderish.

As a black man, I agree with pretty much everything you said and I feel the exact same way. I absolutely despise this move by WB and I’m so sick of this forced diversity shit that Hollywood keeps pushing in an effort to pander to us and try to get our money. If diversity is so important to Hollywood, why don’t they just simply adapt the minority superheroes that haven’t been adapted yet or create new ones? Oh yea that’s right, because they’re lazy, racist, no-talent hacks. THAT is what we want, not hand-me-downs of historically white characters. That’s disrespectful to both them (white people) and us. The same exact shit is still happening too with the recent Batgirl news. That’s not QUITE as bad as with Superman but it’s still bad. This Superman situation is absolutely the worst I’ve ever seen though because 1. Not only is he a historically white character, but he’s literally the most iconic historically white character. 2. They’re race swapping Clark Kent even though they could’ve easily used one of the other two black Supermen from the multiverse. Even when they clearly have options they still want to race swap the white guy 🤦🏽‍♂️ And 3. It was on Henry Cavill’s birthday. Of all days they could’ve broken this news. Like seriously WB? What did Henry do to make y’all that mad? Did he sleep with one of the executives’ wives or something? How they’ve treated Henry, Zack Snyder, and everybody else involved with Snyder’s DC film universe is just shameful. That whole company is dead to me and I definitely won’t be seeing this Superman movie. But I already know that when it completely bombs they’ll blame “racism” for it 🙄😒

Being black I was curious what’d you have to about this. I’ll be honest, your reasoning sounds good on paper, but truly I’ve heard the “They’re just trying to take advantage of the black community” argument may times on this, and I think it’s a little back-handed. To me it sounds like an easy excuse to not want a black Superman. Cause if one really cared about the black community being used they would’ve said something before this incident. That’s my only problem, people are saying this but it happens all the time. It’s only when it affects a character they’ve built a strong relation/attachment to, that they decide it’s wrong. I think they are doing this for the same reason I think White people are upset by this: People want a superhero character that they resonate with, that knows what their day-to-day life is like. That’s the point of superhero movies, to feel like you’re the hero of your own story afterwards. So I think it’ll make a lot of little black boys as well as other minorities to see someone from the culture make it to the big screen.
