      The instructions specify a fry pan with flat side walls and it should rest on the sides of the pan not on the base. As the original commenter said it's to control splatter from shallow frying and prevent steam buildup as would happen with one of those frying screens

    • @Taolan8472
      @Taolan8472 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can work for deep frying, but you have to keep the top of your pan in mind and not overfill.
      Also, it needs to fit the pan. I find it useful to full invert the frywall before using it to unfold any creases from storage.

    I had one of those Sistema steamers before I bought my rice cooker.
    I found that you need to cook the rice for a straight 12 mins then remove from the microwave but leave it to sit with the lid on for 5 mins to continue to steam and it’s perfect rice every time =]

    • @kerpella
      @kerpella 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the same Sistema steamer. I find 1:1.5 cups rice:water ratio and 11 minutes for 1 cup or 14 minutes for 2 cups of rice (1100W microwave) is perfect.

    • @duffman18
      @duffman18 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@CarinaCoffee there's a reason all Chinese people seem to have rice cookers. Like I live in a city that gets enormous amounts of Chinese international students coming over every year (Liverpool, I guess because there's a long history of Chinese people living here, centuries of it happening). But yeah they all have rice cookers. It's just incredibly convinient if you eat a lot of rice. It cooks it perfectly every time, no fussing about. They're usually super easy to clean too.

  • @Excludos
    @Excludos 4 ปีที่แล้ว +71

    17:15 oh dear, you need a new pan Barry. That one has seen better days. Especially the non-stick coating looks pretty gone. Also, when you're deepfrying, just use a casserole with high sides. Eliminates this safety concern entirely.

      Like a Dutch oven? (I think of Corningware when I read casserole, so just want to see what you mean.) • @Excludos
      @Excludos 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Uniquely-Unoriginal No, but that's my language failing me. Casserole in Norwegian refers to what you would probably call a sauce pan. A large sauce pan does the trick for deep frying, and the tall sides makes it difficult to splash or spill anything.

  • @duffman18

    Barry, mate, get yourself a microwave that has no spinning plate. They're a life changer. They heat up everything equally, the microwaves coming from the bottom "wall" of the microwave shooting vertically up across the whole plate/bowl. They take slightly longer than normal to cook to the same amount (like add an extra minute onto the cooking time) but they're definitely worth it for how evenly everything cooks. I only got one because stupidly I bought square plates and my old microwave couldn't fit them in, they didn't spin at all because the corners blocked movement.
    But yeah the no-plate microwaves are great. They seem to all be bigger than normal microwaves too.
    And for popcorn, they're so damn good. May seem like a minor thing, but yeah you know those microwavable bags of popcorn you can get everywhere? And in normal microwaves they always seem to not pop every kernel, there's always a bunch of hard teeth cracking kernels left, and it's really easy to accidently burn them? Yeah well these plateless microwaves fix all that, because the kernels fall to the bottom of the bag when the others pop, and the heat comes from the bottom of the microwave, _EVERY_ kernel gets popped, and it doesn't burn them whatsoever (still keep an eye on it, mind, and take it out when popping is only happening every 3 seconds or so like it says on the box). Again it might be a minor thing, but damn it makes good popcorn.
    I see no reason to ever go back to the old kind of microwave ever again in my life. This is the superior type of microwave for sure. Even if you have normal plates. Everything just cooks so much better, no need to take soup out to stir it halfway through and stuff like that, because it already cooks every part of it it equally and evenly

    Barry, a quick nerdy trick to make your post pop up at the required time (special effects style) would be to use a controlled plug and have the power to to the toaster cut at just the right moment. With most toasters this will release the lock down mechanism and the toast will pop up.
    A hive plug could be used to do this for example with the hive app open on your phone. As you talk about toast you point at the toaster with one hand and you tap the app with the other hand to switch off the controlled plug .... Toast pops up ... Magic

    I ordered this rice cooking pot a few years ago on Amazon. It works great, when you figured out the perfect amount of time yourself. The instructions there are nothing more than a rough guideline. The water to rice ratio should always be 2:1. 500ml of water for 250g of rice. The time depends on the power of your microwave. I use 850W for 15 minutes. If you like to put a pinch of salt or any salty seasoning into the water before cooking, the time will extend slightly

    The veggie sheet slicer is meant for daikon raddish, mostly for Japanese cooking. But the cucumber sheets would be very nice for cucumber sandwiches, the potatoe sheets go nice for scallop potatoes or 7-layer caserole. These sheets are also a cheat for making julienne slices.

    My mom used to use Butter Buds back in the 80's when she was on Weight Watchers. She loved it, I thought it was terrible. Also, again, in the 80's when I was young, we frequently had rice with butter (or more likely margarine) for breakfast (when money was tight). The cucumber "sheets" would be smashing for cucumber sammies.

    When it comes to the courgette sheets, I put ricotta, seasonings, egg (lasagna or stuffed shell filling) and shredded chicken inside the sheets, roll them up, and lay them in a pan, with preferred sauce under and overtop, sprinkle with a bit of cheese and bake! A white sauce can be delightful, but so can red, a wine sauce, meat sauce, etc.
