I agree with rowdybroomsticks. I've had a Mariner Mag 3/ same as an XR6 for many years & it idles around 1200-1300 on muffs in the yard.

It is suppose to idle higher when out of the water. When in the water back pressure from exhaust will bring the idle down. When u adjust idle u are suppose to do it in the water.i would google year and model and see what idle rpm should be.

Needs to be around 700 to 800 in neutral and 650 to 700 in gear. Look on the flywheel cover and it will tell you.

Load up shifting cables w grease at motor side , you should change out fuel filter since you ran it ,on engine , since boat was sitting , maybe do a second gear lube change , see if your bottom end is sealed , piece of mind , you could use an old school dwell meter to match your tack run accuracy

Your doing good for no experience and I’ll give you all the credit for getting out there and doing it. But some things you really need a manual for adjustment specs. I would be getting a manual for that specific outboard. It would eliminate any guess work.

Dial on the back refers to the number of cylinders on the motor. You'll want to move it to whichever position corresponds to 6 cylinders

I came across another BassCat just like yours yesterday at a local tournament.
Compared to this guy your year-with obstructions such as moving, etc-is a lot shorter time span than he had restoring his. And he didn't have to cut the deck and do stringers, or a lot of the harder stuff you did. Took him 2 1/2 years and mostly what he did was mount another outboard, redo the console and dash, rewire, new pumps, recover the seats, and did a super finish on the hull.
There were quite a few of the older fishemen looking over that Cat, seems to be a favorite wherever it goes he said.
Don't beat yourself up about anything. It's nearly done, it's yours, it's paid for, it'll do the job. Nice boat.

I did exactly what you did with your old light socket. Soldered in new wires right at the base and it works fine. Really enjoy the series!

Good stuff. Restored a tin boat recently, stumbling through the process just like you. Don’t know that I could have shared that with the keyboard experts out there. Bravo.

It idles higher out of the water because there is no back pressure on the exhaust, the engine exhausts under the water applying proper back pressure.

Also, there is some great led options for nav lights, LED strips that sticks to the hull, very bright and easy to install

Idle on mine is 900 to 1000 on muffs. 800 in water with exhaust back pressure. 700 or so in gear at idle.

i got that exact switch panel in my boat and they work well, but be carefull while manipulating the switches, the connecting pins in the back are just press fitted in the switch casing (plastic) and if you plug/unplug them too much, they will start moving and the wiggle is enough to cause the connector pins to sink in the casing, causing the rocker switch to jam in one position... I learned that the hard way unfortunatly

As a 150 XR6 owner for about a decade now, I'd say that's pretty close. I would think 1250-1350 would be about right. I'd go with it if it shifts okay on the water and theirs no loud clunking noises 👍

  • @jeffbrummette1622

Take it out in the water an see what the tach says then adjust from there.

It’s right when you put it in water the RPMs should drop, but you are idling little bit high

  • @MrMd5555

I guess you figured it out but On Those tachs you usually have to adjust the turn switch on the back so it knows how many cylinders are hitting. A 2cyl rpm is gonna be way different than a 3,4, 6, 8 cyl rpm etc

Same here on mine. I just figured his gauge is still off a little. And it's out of the water too. So that's letting it bump up quite a bit. The boat is definitely useable now though!

My non-professional opinion? You’ve got a cheap aftermarket tach and that’s as good as you’re going to get. Your motor is probably, from the sound of it, idling around 800-900 rpm. Drop the coin for an OEM for top quality aftermarket tach.
