Excellent review. Here in Brazil it is a very underrated camera. Mine doesn't change for anything, I use it exclusively in corporate jobs and some coverage of low light events. Despite the difficulty of handling, I preferred to adapt to it than to be like a madman wanting to buy each new camera model that the brands launch every month. If you have patience with it, you get great results. Still, I love the camera. With Atomos then, it’s not even mentioned, when I used it the first time I was impressed. If you keep an eye on maintaining the exposure in the right way, the noise does not interfere so much in my opinion. Congratulations on the channel.
People dramatically underestimated this camera, but I didn't! If you shoot two stops over in S-Log2, this camera's image is glorious. In fact, we JUST NOW upgraded to the FX9 and I still miss features that the FS700 has (coupled with a Shogun Inferno). Only people that REALLY know how to expose and grade correctly can access the hidden treasures within. Most people were put off because they don't know about overexposure compensated LUT's etc. etc.
This has been our main camera until past year, in which we got a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Cámera 6K. But we are still in love with this one. Great machine, great image, good to work handheld and with the only problem that 4K wasn't able internally and you needed a big recorder like the Atomos Shogun Inferno, which eat batteries like I eat burgers.
I still use this camera in combination with an Odyssey 7q as a B-Camera to my RED Epic Dragon. It holds up extremely well. It really needs an external recorder...but then it becomes a lockness monster of potential people have forgotten about.
Hey man I recently got this camera and was wondering what PP settings do you use with filming externally ? I am not getting the video quality that I thought I would get
@@dr7productions789 SLOG2. I used an Odyssey 7Q external recorder which downsampled the 4K RAW into 10bit Prores or allowed me to also film in RAW. In both flavors, I still have amazing results. If you look up "BURT REYNOLDS INRODUCES THE NEW BANDIT TRANS AM", I shot all that with the 7Q, FS700 and an original A7S paired with a 7Q as well. You can find that video on TH-cam. Any Trans Am video I made after that started including the RED and a lot of the shots are still this camera. You have to get into color grading though.
I still use it, it's an excellent camera, i even use it today for a TV show, i mostly use it for portrait subject, many people tell me to buy an fs7, but i don't know, i'm still in love with this camera like the first day
As someone who shoots with this camera pretty much daily, it is still an amazing camera to work with even after all these years and all the advancement in Tech. It really does hold up well. Love the image quality of them and you kind of figure out how to get around the ergonimics. I like the boxy feel with the top screen when going handheld personally. Also, the internal AVCHD holds up really well to being pushed around for an 8-bit codec, it's by no means perfect but I use S-Log2 on internal HD all the time and get pretty killer results.
When i went independent as a filmmaker/TV-producer i bought a banged up FS700U for 850 dollars, and until last month, when i bought a FS5 mark 1, it has been my main camera along with a Sony A7rII. Its made me well over 60.000 dollars in the past two years, and since i mostly do projects in 1080p its more than sufficient :)
Sony’s older cameras are amazing. And their new ones like the siii and fx9 are also amazing. They’ve been killing it. The fact their old cameras are still so capable is awesome
I remember using this beast for a music video in 2013 :) Half of our budget went for renting it for half a day! No RAW was available then, yet it was totally worth it for 200fps slow-mo shots alone.
I'm so glad you made a video going over this camera. I own this and have shot a number of awesome visuals with this camera. I also am running the Shogun 7 with this camera and recording ProRes 422 in 4K. I have also done recording with ProRes RAW as well, and the detail is insane. I have noticed once you jump into ProRes RAW you do encounter much noise if you do not have enough light hitting the sensor. A fast lens, with a speed booster should help in that regard, but something to be mindful of for anyone looking to test that out for themselves.
Bought one about a month ago after watching some of your videos and this camera is absolutely amazing. I needed to film a music video and I wanted to sell it after to make profit but... I ended up falling in love with it ahahah
Agree with the sentiment that this old beast is a great value proposition. I am still using mine, 8 years later- the best return on investment I've had on a camera... I am still waiting for Sony to put 12 bit internal in their cameras to justify an upgrade!... I am not alone in preferring the image from this camera to the next generation, there is something special about this sensor, it just needs light, so best to rate it as ASA 500. Note- the Odyssey is darn fine recorder, just requires transcoding from CimeamDNG RAW to ProRes 444 for 12 bit, but is a solid metal block that makes no noise, and mine has taken a beating, so don't be shy to get an FS700 Oddysey combo, if someone is selling that...
I'd love to see the FS700 vs the F3 apples to apples in terms of colour, low light, and other aesthetic categories, especially the F3 slog vs fs700 slog2, it'd be really interesting to be comparing the XD-CAM tech the FS700 uses to the CineAlta tech the F3 uses in regard to the aesthetic quality
I mostly shoot on the pocket 6k & 4k today, but I still have my old FS700 and use it fairly often. The Sony E mount 28-135mm servo zoom is just phenomenal and the combo still works well today! It’s my go-to camera for sports. I just wish I could use that lens on my BMD cameras!
Caleb, I followed your advice 4 months ago and bought the FS700R. I never regretted it, it's a great camera, even in FullHD, the colors and handling are much better than Sony A6400 which I also own. FS700 produces awesome cinematic look, it does not overheat (you can shoot 3 hours straight no problem), and battery life is really great. I also love the short flange E-mount, you can use basically any lens you find around with it. It's a shame they did not do the crop function in FullHD mode, since the sensor has so much overhead. I also got myself an even cheaper FS100, which is pretty much the same for FullHD. Now, if the FS100/700 were fullframe, they'd be priceless. :)
With a metabones speedbooster you can use full frame lenses on this camera. It makes the crop go from 1.5 (which is the native crop of the camera) to 1.09, so practically full frame.
I used this camera for 8 years with the Odyssey7Q to get the raw. Even now after upgrading to the new Canon C300MK3, the difference isn't huge. This has to be the cheapest option for 4k raw uptown 120fps. Incredible for the price if you don't need AF

I think since it outputs raw, the recorder just compresses that to the Prores Raw and other newer codecs outputting raw seems to give so many more options if you have an external recorder
@@AntonWongVideo I guess I'm just impressed the HDMI from 8 years ago was capable of outputting 4k 10bit 120p raw. Before such a standard was really conceivable/acheivable. That's future proof as heck

wow awesome. I still use the original C300 for most projects and it works great. Awesome channel and videos thanks!
Kinda, but not really. Sony had their FS100 vs the C100. (and Panasonic the AF100) While Sony with their FS700 was competing against the C300 (the original mk1). The FS700 internal codec wasn't as good as the C300, wasn't as ergonomically designed as the C300, and the FS700 lacked a few other things like no TC. But the FS700 trashed the C300 when it came to external recording and slow motion. (the C300 couldn't even do 1080 60fps! While the FS700 could do upscaled 960fps internally!!! :-o )

Nicely done! Thanks!! 8 years after I still widely use my FS700 with Odyssey 7q and I pray every day it will still work for many years ! True that there are some limitations in low light, I use newer mirrorless cameras for such scenarios, but for serious shootings requiring some additional lights, it's my first choice, the dynamic range, sharpness and overall soft and organic look of images I find with this camera, I can't find it in new mirrorless cameras.
Hi Thomas after i saw this video i decide to buy the Sony Fs 700 R , i just bought one it cost me 1200 $ what best recorder monitor i can buy now for get the best performance of this camera like recording 4K 12 Bit at the maximum FPS ?
I remember drooling over this camera when watching Freddie Wong shooting on it around its release. Had no idea the price had come down so low on it, might be about to make a purchase!
While I definitely don't enjoy Sony's colour gamut, this is a camera I've used a lot in my workflow. I've graded enough SLOG2 to get what I want out of it, and it's definitely a solid unit for the price once you get the ergonomics working for you.
The form factor of the cameras actually good if you think about it because with a red or an RV camera you would have to add accessories to it anyway which gives it a clunky look where as these attachments are seamlessly integrated with in the build of the camera
I know this video is now old too, but you should do another one on the FS5/FS7 cameras. They're also super cheap now and can really shine with an external recorder.
Caleb, considering you used to run with a C100 for a while, this or the C100? If I recall people always seem to love the low light performance and the codec from the C100.

It’s very interesting to know this camera working better of Sony FS7 when you want recover overexposure but in low light Sony FS7 working much better. Just my problem with this camera is noise but you can used noise reduction at the post.
You can watch the videos I took with this camera in my TH-cam channel, keep in mind I used noise reduction most of the time.
i love these Videos about old cinema cameras
I have always thought the FS700 was an underrated camera. Teamed up with the Atomos Inferno you have an epic and affordable cinema camera.
Bought this almost a year ago based on your recommendation! Shot for Netflix docs, personal work, and corporate work. Once I got around the awkwardness with an easy rig it’s a lovely little cam!
Try to find a sidefinder evf
I appreciate videos like this. It's like watching the 5D classic videos and right after the prices jack up even more because of said video. Lol
Thanks Caleb for tearing up my wallet.
They only go up for a few months and then people realize the downsides and the prices drop again.
We're still using this camera for our production. Planning to switch to bmpcc6k tho, keeping this beast as a B-cam.
How is moire? Any aliasing? Rolling shutter?
One of my all time favorite cameras. The slow motion is so amazing
It's this year 2025. Caleb " This $500 Camera shoots 4K ProResRaw Externally"! ...and the last few FS700's get sold..
Thank you! you just made me feel a lot better about my FS700
HOW... does this camera support formats that didn't exist when it was built?
I think since it outputs raw, the recorder just compresses that to the Prores Raw and other newer codecs
outputting raw seems to give so many more options if you have an external recorder
You mean Prores RAW ? It's "transcoded" from the Sony FS RAW inside the Atomos recorder.
@@AntonWongVideo I guess I'm just impressed the HDMI from 8 years ago was capable of outputting 4k 10bit 120p raw. Before such a standard was really conceivable/acheivable. That's future proof as heck
@@Triforcefilms its raw data not video data so its smaller than u think. 4k was a thing 8 years ago it wasn't 20 years ago lol
Triforcefilms SDI, not HDMI
Grabs popcorn... love this series.
Quick! Head to Ebay before everyone else watches this video! 😂
So true
I go to comment and who do I see. Fancy going halves? Can spend half the year my side of the pond then the other yours
😂 what’s up dude! Seriously I’m looking to snag a pocket 6k soon here but this looks amazing too
😃😃😃👍
It's too late - prices already shot up. :(
Top guy, always delivering high-quality stuff. Much appreciated!. Thanks
This is still my everyday shooter paired with the original Atomos Shogun. It's a workhorse.
dito ❤️
Hi, do you know why it has massive noises in shadows (daylight) when recording raw externally on n cine profile? In slog2 there is no noise, only to in PP5, PP3 etc...
Been my A-cam for years and the clients love it!
This was a great video however I feel you missed a great opportunity by not comparing it to the BMPCC 4K as they are similarly priced.
The p4k is great but its a cinema camera no great but not the same. I have both. Its greatest problem in evf you can't see the screen under the sun.
@@ereceeme I wanted to see sony raw vs bm raw how well they stack up against each other. The main focus of Caleb's video was the raw video output. The evf I could care less about but thanks for your feedback.
brakmaster I can tell you this: The BMPCC lacks 4k 120 and 2k 240 but is better noise wise. Also the bmraw options allow for smaller file sizes.
My main camera for all my work, I own reds, ursas and an ARRI - I still go back to this.
mastercheif1989 Wow! Could you explain why?
@@KmfilmAt Ease of use, reliability, ruggedness, and great features that in many outpace a lot of these newer rigs.
The FS700 - all of the image quality, none of the ergonomics.
Just bought this camera for $600. Thank you.
The only downside about this series (please make more) is that the camera blow up in price lol
I just picked one up last week, perfect timing for this video!
Ha! I just watched the Sony f3 this morning!
Oh nice! Crazy what money can buy with these older cameras!
@@dslrvideoshooter absolutely. . . .
wow awesome. So many people suckered into thinking they need the latest camera when there are so many options 5+ years old (especially people just starting out who don't have the money to spend but still do). I still use the original C300 for most projects and it works great. Awesome channel and videos thanks!
The Canon C100's nemesis.
Kinda, but not really.
Sony had their FS100 vs the C100. (and Panasonic the AF100)
While Sony with their FS700 was competing against the C300 (the original mk1).
C100 was smaller though
@@ChrisParayno FS100 / FS5 are similar-ish in size though.
Thanks for posting this vid: This is made it a no brainer which cinema camera to buy. Got my fs700r with a mov cam cage, and having a blast finding long term accessories, thanks to you and your channel.
"This Crusty Old Cinema Camera" 🤣 1:15
I love these reviews. The idea of using what we already have is so good.
At the very least, if you’re off doing a quick video favor for a friend of a friend, you Look way more Boss if set up one of These beasties rather than an A6000 series.
No joke, I got a raise at work after I picked one up last season. My boss was always like "Jake shoots with one of those Red cameras now" hahahah
jake kuick - Just print a big Red sticker and you’re all set :) haha
@@jakekuick lol i might slap a red sticker on my bmpcc4k. Too bad i HATE red cameras image 🤷♂️
Loved my old FS700. A workhorse for many years.
Aaaaand it's on it's way back up to it's 8000$ price tag
So awesome you’re doing this . Keep them coming!
TH-camrs will literally label anything as a cinema camera at this point.
Keep this concept going! We love it!
I’d love to see one of these videos about the original RED.
there is some, just search red one in 2020
Love this camera! I have 3 FS700R - perfect for interviews and always tripod mounted. Thanks for the reminder that it's still a very useful piece of gear.
Amazing video! I used to hate this camera back in the day but now I´m impressed. Great work Caleb!
Thank you so much Caleb. Really excited to see what other cameras you talk about. I do remember when this came out.
Thanks for this post! Just bought an fs700r with a movcam silver mount, for one heck of a steal. Learning a boat load from your channel.
I had one of these when they first came out and I absolutely loved the thing
I liked the form factor of these cameras a lot more. They were neat. Thanks for posting...
I bought this camera a year ago, I am very happy with it, if you adapt a shogun inferno the quality is enormous.
The form factor of the cameras actually good if you think about it because with a red or an RV camera you would have to add accessories to it anyway which gives it a clunky look where as these attachments are seamlessly integrated with in the build of the camera
Outstanding review that steps out of the norm. Love the whole concept of it and the execution.
Since the posting of this video, they are now back up to almost $3,000. Lol. Love this setup! Great video!
Oh man.... You're making me contemplate selling mine now. 😁
The 700! Right! Totally forgot about this camera. 240 FPS. Yea. Thats pretty awesome. Its like a budget beginner Phantom! Great review.
I know this video is now old too, but you should do another one on the FS5/FS7 cameras. They're also super cheap now and can really shine with an external recorder.
Thank you. I was waiting for this video! I wish more detailed video on Fs700 would come!! 👍👍👍
Caleb, considering you used to run with a C100 for a while, this or the C100? If I recall people always seem to love the low light performance and the codec from the C100.
Wow! That FS700's one versatile camera with quite an affordable price. 🎥
Atomos ninja V also can be used if you already have it. You just need the adapter "AtomX SDI Module".
I just bought the NEX-FS100U...wanted to get the FS700 but, the deal was so good, I couldn't pass it up. Happy with it so far.
Hurry, there is a Sony F65 CineAlta for 11K USD on ebay! Time to test a top of the line cinema camera from 10 years ago for a fraction of the original price!
There is also a Sony F35 CineAlta with Odyssey 7Q included for 5K!
I love that!!!
This was my dream camera back in 2014
Some of these older pro sony cameras are amazing for sure!
Your Audio on this video is unbelievably good, what did you do? can you please share your audio gear and any post work you did on it?
Awesome old gear!
Wow that info is amazing
No body done like this video before
Extremely helpful for any persons in this situation
3 minutes into this video i went on ebay and brought 2, why is this guy not closer to me down under, i would shake your hand for a great sales pitch
