I paid $ 29 for it, I thought it was a little bigger but it's fine. It's purpose is to be small. The build quality is suberb... Miyoo devices are really well made. Great colors, great buttons (a little stiff but I think it'll soften with time), great little screen and silent shoulder buttons. Works somewhat hotter than it should but it's ok. I Spruced it with 32GB Adata card (Spruce OS) and the speed is blazing fast. No big problems with Spruce at all almost everything works fine (some minor things but passable). I changed the default Core for Arcade changing it from FBNEO to MAME2003 Plus. Works like a charm. The case has a nice finish but I think is a lil too thick for this device. Man the pixels are displayed so beautyfull... I'll test the battery life but the average is 5 hours.

These two devices inspired an accidentally great summary of the retro game industry when Wulff Den compared them. "This one feels bad, and this one runs bad, and why is custom firmware still necessary?" I'm looking forward to the day when someone finally makes a device with no major flaws.
Spruce OS was a complete gamechanger for the A30 and it is good that it still has a lower reputation because now you can buy it for 35 bucks or so. For such a great micro handheld, it really is the best deal right now. We might get Onion on the A30 eventually too. Micro: OG MM with Onion/A30 with Spruce Pocketable size: Anbernic 35XX-H/SP to use as a portable Pi. Max bang for your buck? R36S "Why is this so cheap?Might as well buy": Datafrog SF2000 and the vertical variant for less than 10 bucks with the SD rework and the improved OS. Everything else I think it twice if I should buy that or a Steam Deck and is dependant on usecase.
The RG28XX is such a nice device. It doesn’t pip my Miyoo Mini+ for my top spot, but it’s a Retro Dream, been playing Advance Wars II and it looks real nice. All the 8Bit & 16Bit stuff plays well, I’m using Knulli as an OS, but the stock OS is OK, it really is. I’m very happy with the screen brightness, and there is no bleed at low levels. I’ve adopted a glasses case as it’s sleeping bag :) one of the ones with the snap closure and it works well. The sound isn’t great, and it rattles, but for the price it’s almost unbeatable.
Having both for a while, I was in the minority for a long time calling out the Miyoo as the better of the 2. The rattle of the 28xx can't be dampened no matter what mod you perform, and it's an absolute deal breaker for something you want to carry around in your pocket. The feel of the 28xx is also hard in the hand in comparison, not sure why, maybe the plastic used, but it doesn't feel good for extended sessions. Glad the community is finally coming around to what I've been preaching.
I have both of these devices 😂. Initially I was more happy with her 28XX but now that Spruce is out for the A30 it has taken over as my favorite micro handheld. Awesome video, as always Adin!
I was so very tempted by the GKD Pixel but I'm unsure if the form factor would really be good and if the screen and other factors are sub par it makes it less and less appealing

Usual story for me, almost 40yo guy tired of corpos and their constant dlc/microtransactions and making us re-buy games in perpetuity that we already bought back in the day lol. Been emulating on PC since the mid 2000s until finally discovering the handheld rabbithole. LOVING that there are companies out there using modern tech purposely to run the old stuff. All our old good games are back!! I love this hobby!!
Nice little handheld! My screen had a blue line going through it and they sent me a replacement screen. Had to open the thing up, unscrew the motherboard and everything to install it. My first “surgery”, made me pretty nervous 😂

Screen feels a bit small for some systems but great for GBC and GBA as well as a bit of N64 (especially my favorite, snowboard kids 2)
These are both neato devices. But if you dislike sounding like you have a babies rattle in your pocket, I can full on recommend getting a rg353m. Love mine. It's a very tight device, with rattle almost non-existent.🙂that 2gb ram is sweet with PortMaster stuff too
I really wish these companies would make more of these handhelds with a 6-button layout to cater to Sega Genesis and Saturn. You can always remap it to 4-button. Oh well just my opinion
@@adinwalls Sadly from I researched it did not even come with Saturn games, even an if they added an analog stick with the d-pad it would of been a great selling point. They missed a few key factors. I hope they did not give up on the 6-button
So in summary, neither hits the spot of providing the perfect retro pocket device. The anbernic feels closer if they sort the controls & suspend mode. Maybe next version will resolve these faults, but given what you've shown today, both are compromised and neither are a buy. Might as well use existing devices and wait. Thank you for this excellent review which has stopped me buying yet another retro handheld with compromises and disappointment
Hey man, I hoped that WOULDN’T be the takeaway from this video. For the price I think both of these are great, but as you said there are other devices: some commenters made great recommendations such as the RG280V, RG280M, RG300X. These are all still wonderful devices and play all the old systems. For me, design-wise the Miyoo A30 is a good option.

I have both. Miyoo a30 is the clear winner after installing spruce os. It’s lighter, buttons feel like nes controller, triggers are easier to press. It’s good upto ps1. Wish it was little more powerful. But I’ll be keeping the miyoo a30.
The nano buttons of the RG28XX are a pure and simple NO WAY, even with better performance and battery. The A30 win in controls, aesthetics and sleep mode, adding a joystick and wifi. What else?
Mini devices won me over. I thought I'd be bothered with small screens, but no! A well designed mini device makes the screen feel good. I'm even playing it at home, which was not my initial intention. The A30 is my current favorite device. It's well designed, which makes it disappear when you're playing, so that you can focus on your retro game. It's also comfortable for the size, the build quality is good, and the controls are great. A bit of false diagonals, it's true, but I can roll the d-pad and play games with a lot of precision. I guess I got used to it. I'm actually beating my own arcade records with it in games like Metal Slug 1 and Blazing Star. I disagree about the shoulder buttons. I love them! It's a breath of fresh air seeing silent shoulder buttons on such a cheap device. Overall we should avoid using shoulder buttons on mini devices because they're not comfortable to use no matter how well designed the device is.

I love your videos, but this time I definitely disagree. I have both devices here and the battery life, the stock firmware, the build quality and the performance are a lot better on the Anbernic. The Dpad and display are also slightly better on the Anbernic, only the face buttons really are too small.
When your a gamer and your wife is sleeping right next to you in bed... A device NEEDS to be "sleeping wife" friendly otherwise I do not buy it, If only all buttons, I'm looking at you L1 and R1, operated with a soft membrane and not micro switches.
Glad the A30 got the screen brightness fixed. I've always despised Anbernic's firm, hard to press controls (Miyoo Flip soon please 🥲) and the buttons seem so small so I went with the A30. Really excited to try it out with Spruce. The dev seems super active on it as of now cause they already made a 1.1.5 version yesterday. I saw RGC's vid yesterday and he mentionned his new A30 that arrived didn't have that sensitive / loose D-Pad issue so maybe they made a silent revision after seeing the complaints or their manufacturing is inconsistent 😅🤣 Like my RG35XXSP came with tiny damping pads on a few controls while they're non-existent for other people so yeah. I mean for 30$ for such a tiny emulator powerhouse it's still amazing. And will you also cover the Powkiddy V10 ? Cheers :))

Only thing hurting the value is that their micro sd cards are complete garbage, so you have to add on a bit there.
The RG28XX with minUi is amazing! There are now additional standalone emulators you can run (N64, PSP, DC, DS). They also just added NeoGeo

Yes it does seem like both these handhelds have struck a chord with people.
I like MinUI as well but they have have to fix the audio crackle and pops, it really detracts from the quality of the firmware.

Yes the handheld systems are best for the smaller screens but I just love the idea of playing NES on a tiny screen.
Definitely something fun about the tiny screen, it’s just big enough to be usable, I don’t think I could go any smaller than that

I think that the a30 should have used the same processor as the mini and plus so onion would have worked.
Oh I 100% agree. It would have immediately been able to use OnionOS and been the clear winner out the gate.

For these devices, rather use filters, not shaders.

@@adinwalls Oh by the way just a small question. When did you buy your A30 ? I saw RGC's vid yesterday and he mentionned his new A30 that arrived didn't have that sensitive / loose D-Pad issue so maybe they made a silent revision after seeing the complaints or their manufacturing is inconsistent 😅🤣 Like my RG35XXSP came with tiny damping pads on a few controls while they're non-existent for other people so yeah. I mean for 30$ for such a tiny emulator powerhouse it's still amazing. And will you also cover the Powkiddy V10 ? Cheers :))
