I paid $ 29 for it, I thought it was a little bigger but it's fine. It's purpose is to be small. The build quality is suberb... Miyoo devices are really well made. Great colors, great buttons (a little stiff but I think it'll soften with time), great little screen and silent shoulder buttons. Works somewhat hotter than it should but it's ok. I Spruced it with 32GB Adata card (Spruce OS) and the speed is blazing fast. No big problems with Spruce at all almost everything works fine (some minor things but passable). I changed the default Core for Arcade changing it from FBNEO to MAME2003 Plus. Works like a charm. The case has a nice finish but I think is a lil too thick for this device. Man the pixels are displayed so beautyfull... I'll test the battery life but the average is 5 hours.

These two devices inspired an accidentally great summary of the retro game industry when Wulff Den compared them. "This one feels bad, and this one runs bad, and why is custom firmware still necessary?" I'm looking forward to the day when someone finally makes a device with no major flaws.

Spruce OS was a complete gamechanger for the A30 and it is good that it still has a lower reputation because now you can buy it for 35 bucks or so. For such a great micro handheld, it really is the best deal right now. We might get Onion on the A30 eventually too.
Micro: OG MM with Onion/A30 with Spruce
Pocketable size: Anbernic 35XX-H/SP to use as a portable Pi.
Max bang for your buck? R36S
"Why is this so cheap?Might as well buy": Datafrog SF2000 and the vertical variant for less than 10 bucks with the SD rework and the improved OS.
Everything else I think it twice if I should buy that or a Steam Deck and is dependant on usecase.

Only thing hurting the value is that their micro sd cards are complete garbage, so you have to add on a bit there.

The RG28XX is such a nice device. It doesn’t pip my Miyoo Mini+ for my top spot, but it’s a Retro Dream, been playing Advance Wars II and it looks real nice. All the 8Bit & 16Bit stuff plays well, I’m using Knulli as an OS, but the stock OS is OK, it really is. I’m very happy with the screen brightness, and there is no bleed at low levels. I’ve adopted a glasses case as it’s sleeping bag :) one of the ones with the snap closure and it works well.
The sound isn’t great, and it rattles, but for the price it’s almost unbeatable.

Having both for a while, I was in the minority for a long time calling out the Miyoo as the better of the 2. The rattle of the 28xx can't be dampened no matter what mod you perform, and it's an absolute deal breaker for something you want to carry around in your pocket. The feel of the 28xx is also hard in the hand in comparison, not sure why, maybe the plastic used, but it doesn't feel good for extended sessions. Glad the community is finally coming around to what I've been preaching.

Mini devices won me over. I thought I'd be bothered with small screens, but no! A well designed mini device makes the screen feel good. I'm even playing it at home, which was not my initial intention.
The A30 is my current favorite device. It's well designed, which makes it disappear when you're playing, so that you can focus on your retro game.
It's also comfortable for the size, the build quality is good, and the controls are great. A bit of false diagonals, it's true, but I can roll the d-pad and play games with a lot of precision. I guess I got used to it.
I'm actually beating my own arcade records with it in games like Metal Slug 1 and Blazing Star.
I disagree about the shoulder buttons. I love them! It's a breath of fresh air seeing silent shoulder buttons on such a cheap device. Overall we should avoid using shoulder buttons on mini devices because they're not comfortable to use no matter how well designed the device is.

@@adinwalls It worked out for you lad but as I recall, Joey didn't have the same experience man. Let me ask you this, why should it be that a distributor has to "work" on a unit just so they can say that their customer base is having a good time with the unit? And, of course, I realized, as I typed my question, that Anbernic does the same bloody thing, at least with the Linux based units; cutting the unit loose on the public with half-baked software. Nevermind man, nevermind. BTW, you doing the Cube or giving it a miss lad?

@STR82DVD well there’s the thing, they’ve all been sending out half baked software from the start. Funny enough, Powkiddy has been doing well in this department. And yes, I’m definitely keen to take a look at the cube.

@@adinwalls My cube just shipped. Powkiddy. Usually, that's all I need say but your right young lad, Powkiddy seems to have upped their game as of late. And yet.... The craptastic X70 is still available for pickup on Amazon. Lordy.

I love your videos, but this time I definitely disagree. I have both devices here and the battery life, the stock firmware, the build quality and the performance are a lot better on the Anbernic. The Dpad and display are also slightly better on the Anbernic, only the face buttons really are too small.

I guess it depends what your focus is on what you’re looking for with all those things

I am not a fan of uber small screens. Anything less than 3.5 inch screen is a pass for me. Thanks for the video though.

Too small. Too big a trade off for portability. A PASS

When your a gamer and your wife is sleeping right next to you in bed... A device NEEDS to be "sleeping wife" friendly otherwise I do not buy it,
If only all buttons, I'm looking at you L1 and R1, operated with a soft membrane and not micro switches.

Glad the A30 got the screen brightness fixed. I've always despised Anbernic's firm, hard to press controls (Miyoo Flip soon please 🥲) and the buttons seem so small so I went with the A30. Really excited to try it out with Spruce. The dev seems super active on it as of now cause they already made a 1.1.5 version yesterday. Really love that white / purple colored 28XX though, love that design :) Stellar comparison, thanks Adin ✌

@@adinwalls Oh by the way just a small question. When did you buy your A30 ? I saw RGC's vid yesterday and he mentionned his new A30 that arrived didn't have that sensitive / loose D-Pad issue so maybe they made a silent revision after seeing the complaints or their manufacturing is inconsistent 😅🤣 Like my RG35XXSP came with tiny damping pads on a few controls while they're non-existent for other people so yeah. I mean for 30$ for such a tiny emulator powerhouse it's still amazing. And will you also cover the Powkiddy V10 ? Cheers :))
