I am a beginner white belt...struggling at 45 years old with coordination (I thought I had!). I so appreciate these videos and simple explanations...I can build from simple. I believe in crawling before you can walk and then I'll run. Thank you for these videos!!! You are a great teacher!
@johnbryan12 Initially at the basic level we practice kicks in this manner in order to focus on the kicking action only. Later on in our training, we of course change to a guard position while doing kicks and naturally when sparring we must always have a guard. Free sparring typically isn't introduced in any detail until the green belt level (6th kyu). Thanks for the question and all the best to you.
@aaronfromhastings Thanks for your comment. I don't believe that I'm locking out the knee as I'm very careful to not lock out my elbow and knee joints for the very reason of avoiding joint problems later on in life. I think the sound you're hearing is the snap of the gi (probably helped by the mic on my lapel). When hitting a target you would naturally lean in a little more for greater effect while being careful not to lean too far back. Wing Chun is a great art!
I like your videos. You give a different perspective and method than my sensei does and I find that very useful. Your descriptions are easy to understand and your demonstrations are very clear. Thank you.
Why not? Your body may give you some trouble from time to time but gentle exercise is surely better than none and over time you can increase the intensity. Work on your mind being strong and your body will follow. Good luck to you!
Perfectly broken down which personally, is the best method for me to learn this stuff. It takes a long time getting out of bad habits once they have been overlooked for so long.
thank you sensei. sometimes when im in class i miss things. i dont think some one can learn just from a video im my case going to class and your video go hand in hand i can say its helped me
I agree and I'm 3 kyu in Kyokushin Karate, but keep in mind that you're also training not to have a fit body, but to know how to defend yourself plus protect your love ones, but more importantly, Karate training benefits the mind, body and spirit =)
I have SEVERAL health conditions, including Arthritis in the knees, neck, and lower back at the age of 16-17, Sophomore-Junior year in high school...I need a lot of help when it comes to stamina, strength, and flexibility. These are the things I most physically lack...Instead of talking to doctors or even my own family and friends, I believe it's best for me to hear from many others about health. I NEVER took P.E. classes throughout my entire school life. That's how serious my conditions are...
I just made 2 kyu im so happy, karate is a great sport, look at me now im 14 and i have 6 packs, my friend is 16 and he s training tennis and he doesn t have anything, karate is best for bodyshaping
@seishin73 yes i see what you are saying, there are a few styles that just teach the kick on its own to start with but ive found that students can do it just as well with a gard from the start but this is why martail arts is so great its all god in the end thanks for your response :)
Sensei, it sounds to my ears like you are locking out the knee? I've had knee problems in the past, and would like to hear your comment on the strike. Also, is the posture the same when hitting a target? I would want to lean more into the kick, though I know it's a dangerous committment. I have studied Karate years ago but my main art is Wing Chun.
can i ask why you practice your kicks with no gard and arms wide apart? i can see that it would be easya to practice the kick on its own but i think it will cause a student to then open there guard when kicking while sparing ? i teach all basic's from a fighting stance with guard up at all times then when they come round to sparing its all very natural, but got to say very interesting though and a very good vid well done .
Hello, am justabout to start karate and am learning allot from ur videos am writing it all down and practicing it and is really fun. do u learn all of this in white belt ?? is it safe and will u get hurt allot. ! x
dear Sensei i already learned this kick along with the roundhouse kick but my karate lessons were for two weeks and i only got to my white belt with one red stripe and i even broke a board with the front kick its full name is the front snap kick pleaseeeee respond in three days or less
Remember that karate is all about form, form, form, and relaxation. Muscling through techniques does not gain you any additional speed or power. Force = Mass x Acceleration. Your mass will not change by tensing up or trying to muscle a technique...likewise you will only slow it down. Therefore, you will have less power!
your left kick is very different from your right, you are right handed. It happens to me too. Your maegeri's looked like totally different kicks.Thing to keep in mind when you train, as I said it happens to me too, looking at videos of myself kicking, so I pay extra attention to improve on that. Very nice video, respect, OSS!
@Bellamyfanboy Oh, thaaaaat's what u meant. Yeah, generally, the sensei judging the exam/grading tells us what level/dan he wants us to deliver the strikes as far as red-orange belt grading, whatever they are. Isn't the same for u? Ossu
its amazing how different taekwondo is from karate... i thought the form for a "front snap kick" (apchaki) was universal, but i guess not... im a black belt in tkd, and since a white belt we have learned to use fighting stance at all times. hm. for tkd, what you are doing in this video is something of a push kick. in a front snap kick, i learned to kick with the top of my foot
I'm just guessing that maybe you can hit harder if you are hitting with the heel instead of the more flexible part of the foot which could lose impact because of the flexing. I should know, spending at least 14 hours a day sitting in front of computers!
Hi sensei, i have problems with kicking high...when i chamber then kick and retract the lower part of leg my knee and quad (chamber) lowers before the retraction of the kick...how can i fix this?
the Maegeri is better as one fluid movement, instead of subdividing it into 2 parts, faster and more effective, when you chamber the leg it's easier to block or catch
You should also move your head forward with each kick so that it's unexpected and gives you added power through momentum, any good mixed martial arts coach will teach you that as basic
your arthritis will be exacerbated by trying to kick extra hard or extra high. Instead, focus on kicking with proper technique at a manageable height. The Okinawans originally did not kick any higher than the groin. Considering the risk to your balance and / or someone grabbing your foot / leg if you kick higher than that, there is much wisdom in that philosophy!
This was the advice my Sensei gave to me. I came to Karate later in life with a bag full of physical issues accumulated over the years. My Sensei always reminds us that we are all different. Some 16 year old karatekas will be able to do things some 70 year old karatekas can't, and vice-versa. I cannot physically get my leg up to the height Sensei Paul does in this video, but I can demonstrate powerful kicks to suit my needs and it has not held me back in grading. I believe a good karate school should have this philosophy.
ja the perfection of the way of the stile ist mostly compromised to close big compremehised like a turner close stance and his kür so at the end also choyleefot run s for tizendo my meaning long live the funakoshi basic konzeption also for all the styles is maby one of the right ways
does anyone else that wears glasses have to take glasses off to when sparring with a partner? my sensei told me to take mine off and i couldnt see as good LOL
you probably should go to a dojo, sign up and tell a sensei to give you a front kick as example, I'm pretty sure you'll get knocked out. The problem is not about how it looks, it is the same for every move that we need to hold back the power and release it all at the last section of the move, you need to go for the basic first, there is no point of learning advance techniques while not even understand the basic, just the straight punch untill you feel the weight of your punche that it could make a lot of damage to your opponent, lacking understanding of the basic makes your moves very weak and just wasting your time.
This would be a failure for our students even in white belt. Reason is that imagine having an opponent in front of this type of kicking, you would kick his balls and not the target. You are just swinging the leg up. A proper front kick should be aimed with your knee, up with the knee and then kick. Not swinging like this. Dunno if this is standard practice in Karate, but in Kung Fu this is very bad if you do like this. We need precision.
Yes. This is weird. More of a stretching exercise. In Kyokushin you drive the knee, aiming for the gut or sternum; and if the opponent is far away enough, you may extend the leg into a kick in the last motion.
Immy 1 year ago that comment was made and you said you were 13 now you are magically 3 years older? get the fuck out of here kid. He also explained other points about why his arms were down. You fucking moron.
Ok, perhaps I was 14. But I am 16 now. I have done karate for 7 years now, and I have been taught by one of the biggest European champions. If my sensei saw that he would have laughed.

ok karate kid.
StandforLiberty Why are you watching this?
sorry guys but I see kin geri, not mae geri
Why on earth are your arms down? To "help" balance is that really it? Your arms should be up to guard all attacks. Ugh
I assume its because this is more of a drill for the proper execution of the front kick.
its a lot easier for a beginner to use his arms apart for balance
And if you weren't embarrassing enough I quoted what the instructor had said. Go carry on playing your video games you fucking loser.
Immy 1 year ago that comment was made and you said you were 13 now you are magically 3 years older? get the fuck out of here kid. He also explained other points about why his arms were down. You fucking moron.
