I've got a creaking noise coming from the headset or front hub of my new Kona Rove, and here you are with one of your older video's. Lifesaver! I only recently got into gravel riding and started following your channel. Just wanted to say thanks for all the knowledge and good vibes on the channel, really appreciate it.
when my xt cassette wore out the rivets got noisy..so when I when I put the new one on I put green loctite on all of rivets. supposedly that helps them last longer. tip from mtbr. Thanks Clint !
It seems to be a constant battle with my 2017 Anthem 2. First it was the stem/handlebar, then the pedals. I changed the BB out before I realized it was the pedals, less learned there. Then of all things, the zip ties for the cables started to creak. Thought this one was the shock but but tri-flo on the zip ties revealed they were the issue. Had the pedals come back once and now I just fixed the dropper post creak which stayed fixed for exactly 1 1/2 rides. So I've tried to clean it better and use some slick honey and will ride it again tomorrow. I'm going to install a screw in upgraded BB assembly so that I don't have to suspect this one anymore. Hardest to fix next to suspension bearings which are probably next on my list. I did notice some rougher areas internally near the welds that might be causing some of this post creak, but it didn't creak for the 1st 2400 miles so not sure. I did have to install a crank bros post when the Giant one failed. I hate creaks and the Giant seems to be very prone to this relative to other bikes owned by my friends. I even stopped washing the bike thinking that was the cause and have not washed it for a least a year now. The pedal creak seems to be one many people are surprised at and I've helped more than one person in this regard. Keep up the good work Clint.
Good how to videos as always. I just bought a Trek Fuel Ex 5 2017 and after 2 rides it started to creek all over the place. I am assuming the bike will only need the joins and screws lubricated and greased after being in the box for more than a year. You and my LBS are good reps for Giant considering their online customer service is kinda lack. It took them an average of 1 week to answer my emails about some technical stuffs for my Talon and they didn't answer them completely either. Kudos for your Clint and thank you.
Thank you. I decided to disassemble the pivot today. Wasn't that difficult after all. What I founds really surprised me. Not only the bearings are no longer smooth, the big one fron the bottom is completely stuck, doesn't rotate almost. Assume there's rust inside. Guess I need to completely replace the bearings. :( now need to start searching for the tool and new bearings. Thank you
+Kamil Filka you can typically use a socket to pound out the bearings. Find one that fits just inside and then tap it out with a hammer. I would recommend a bearing press to push them back in but you can also use a socket of just the right size. Make sure you put some grease on the inside to make bearings go in a lot easier. I have the bearing press by Wheels Manufacturing which is a good value and built really well. Let me know how it goes!
+Clint Gibbs I just ordered Grand Canyon CF 5.9 hardtail, after a long decision making . I was almost certain I wanted to sell the trance. Now when I see the inferior performance could be due to lack of maintenance, I may be keeping it :) still I'm also tempted to buy anthem. You presented the anthem the way you should ask Giant to pay you for the advertising ;) will let you know. I need to learn to service rear shock, fork and now even the bearings. Plus my original giant wheels have a play. You could also make video about how to service giant hubs :) speak later. Btw. Your videos are very good. Informative, step by step.
I had creaking noises coming from my seatpost as well. If you have aluminum seatpost- you probably have the quick release too tight. Back off a little.
The torque spec on the lock ring of a cassette is a little insane. It's like 45-50nm, and it feels like something is going to snap way before you get there (I don't ever go there).
Hey Clint, I have this loud clicking noise coming from my drivetrain - it's worst when I'm out of the saddle or putting considerable force on the pedals - you got any idea what this might be? I've done some research and I think it may be the bottom bracket but not sure - Great video BTW!
Hi. Did you make a video about how to disassemble pivots and how to remove and replace the bearings, i.e what tools are needed, where the find what bearings a person have, where to buy them and how to instal them properly? Have giant trance x , model 2011 and it creaks a lot. Would like to try to disassemble but I'm unsure how to do that from A to Z.
Good tips. But what'd be the reason not to spray WD40 to carbon frame? Does the solvent do something for the carbon? I'm currently having noises at bottom bracket, bought new bearings, but bought 24mmx37x7mm instead of ....x8mm. And also having some headset/bar/stem noise.. The hunt continues after BB is fine.
+Clint Gibbs Never thought that it'd be a major problem with carbon :) But kood to know. What assembly paste should be used for installing press fit BB:s and headset for carbon frame? The paste you showed at the video is just to add friction so that for instance carbon seat post won't rotate or drop at/to carbon frame.
Most bottom bracket and head cup interfaces have metal, even on carbon frames. So it's actually safe to use regular grease there. But if the interface is carbon that's where you want to use carbon paste. The paste that I showed in the video still helps with creaking noises. Especially for the seat post.
With my bike, there a clicking noise it's nothing debilitating but on the right pedal when ever I get to the top of the revolution there a click, it's very faint to the ear but you can definitely feel it in your foot, any suggestions, should I be concerned. Thanks
I had the exact same problem and it only went away when I replaced the pedals. The "tick" would temporarily go away if I took off the problem pedal and put it back, but I couldn't find a permanent fix while still using that pedal.
Could be the pedal bearings. Do you Shimano pedals? If so I have a video on how to do a quick overall on those. Takes about 10 minutes per pedal if that.
This happened to me. It ended up being the seals were broken on the pedals letting dirt and grime into the bearing. You may want to clean all the bearing, but for a more permanent solution, go grab some shimano saint, spank spike, Shimano spd or spank oozy pedals. I have a pair of trail deore XTs and they are awsome, but more importantly silent. Hope this helps. What brand pedals do you have anyways?
My mountain bike still clicks and creaks loudly even after greasing all parts on the bike. I think all parts need replacing because I've been riding the bike in winter and in strong winds. I don't think mountain bikes are made for winter weather conditions especially strong winds. To ride in windy conditions the gears need to be set to hardest which results in forcing the chain crank and pulling on the handlebars. Even though the bike looks ok I may have damaged the frame, handlebars, bottom bracket and other parts on the bike because I put them through stress while riding in bad winter conditions. The bike I have is a Scott Aspect 940 entry level bike...I don't think that bike was made for bad winter weather. I should have bought a bike that can handle any weather.
I have tried everything that you said about the creaking in the seat post. I have a 2014 giant anthem 27.5 3 and it makes a creaking/ clicking when I'm in the saddle, when I'm standing it subsides so it's not there, but when I'm sitting, man oh man, is it annoying, any idea what it could be?
Definitely do what I show in the video for the saddle rails. Try the WD 40 on the rails and then grease on the rails if that doesn't work. I've had much better success with wd-40 on the seat post than grease.
You don't want to use WD-40 on bearings. You want to use it on metal to metal contact to prevent creaking. just make sure it doesn't touch carbon. Definitely don't use it to try to lube a chain.

Two year old video, but I have creaking in my niner, so Thank you!!!
Can you give a tour of your workshop (how it's organized, how you build it, what equipment you use in the workshop, etc)
Thanks! Just fixed my creaking pivot based on this video.
+Brian Vaughn 😊

it can be your bottom bracket but also your rear wheel body.

+Kamil Filka I have not yet made a video on how to do that. Have you tried spraying something like GT 85 in the pivots? If not try that first.
Another informative and helpful video!

WD40 and regular grease, when left on carbon for a long period of time, can weaken the bond.

The paste you showed at the video is just to add friction so that for instance carbon seat post won't rotate or drop at/to carbon frame.
Answering to myself, seems that teflon greases should be fine for purposes I mentioned above. Anything with solvent can harm the carbon :)
Most bottom bracket and head cup interfaces have metal, even on carbon frames. So it's actually safe to use regular grease there. But if the interface is carbon that's where you want to use carbon paste. The paste that I showed in the video still helps with creaking noises. Especially for the seat post.
Thanks bud, I just spray all of pivots gaps on my trek fuel with wd40
After few days annoyingly creaking . Sorted
A day after i bought my GT Aggressor Sport MTB the forks started to squeak/creek whenever i pushed down on them, why?
Where did you find bearings at? I've been trying to find new frame bearings for my 2018 Trance 3
Ordered through my local bike shop.
I had a Creak in a Front Wheel ( Easton EA70 mtb ) at the Weld Seam , Driving me nuts !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
fixed it Though
Thank you for this video it has really helped me with my squeaky anthem. Just put some gt85 on the upper pivots and its quite 👌
Nice
@@ClintGibbs I was on the verge of going insane. I will pull the shock off tomorrow and have a proper look.

The notorious creaking seatpost and saddle is one way to make me hate riding my bike. That's the only thing I can't stop.
Hi clint i have giant trance2 problem creak in the rear part of my mtb when im applying force to the pedal pleaaaaaase help me clint!!!!!!!!!!!!
Start with this video. If it doesn't help let me know.

Can i use the normal wd40 in the pivot that you say?
hey man please help i have a click every pedal on my pedals itts cheap chinese one pls help i cant bare with it
I have tried everything that you said about the creaking in the seat post. I have a 2014 giant anthem 27.5 3 and it makes a creaking/ clicking when I'm in the saddle, when I'm standing it subsides so it's not there, but when I'm sitting, man oh man, is it annoying, any idea what it could be?
Spray some WD40 where the rails go into the back and the front of the saddle. See if that helps.
Ok ill try that. Really hope it works. This clicking is driving me crazy
I assume you've already tried greasing the saddle rails?
Um no. I haven't touched the saddle since I got the bike. I have greased the seat post and inside the frame where the seat post goes
Definitely do what I show in the video for the saddle rails. Try the WD 40 on the rails and then grease on the rails if that doesn't work. I've had much better success with wd-40 on the seat post than grease.
Great video, some times the creaking noise may come from the chain. :( :)
can I use an all purpose grease?
+xin heng chow yes
Thank you for helping me ❤❤
Which disc rotors are on your cyclocros bike? Haven't seen them yet.
I don't see any Shimano logo on the rotors so my guess is that they are made by Giant.
First I start with PB Blaster
WD40 are you sure? Ain't it gonna damaged the bearings?
You don't want to use WD-40 on bearings. You want to use it on metal to metal contact to prevent creaking. just make sure it doesn't touch carbon. Definitely don't use it to try to lube a chain.
