Davor Schwarz that way you can get plowed over by a truck when you don't hear it coming up behind you, skidding sideways out of control and crossing the center line taking you out blindedly. I'm headed to pick up some skull candy ear plugs now.
This video is a life saver , ive spent more time stripping and re-lubing my new build looking to cure a creak than it took me to build it. I watched this video and 1 hour later my bike is quiet at last . Silence is golden . Thank you gmbn
A few important things he missed: Seatpost; yes, the the seat tube can twist minimally under torque, and also sees some forces when seated... just enough to creak when dry, so lube the seatpost. Stem; some creaking can come from the clamp surface on the steerer tube, so check that. Drop-outs/chip systems; check the torque on your drop-out bolts and apply some lube between the "chip" and the frame, same for derailer hangers on QR drop-outs. Also, for those using QRs, creaking can come from the mating surfaces between the dropouts and the QR. Chainring bolts (!); this is a common one that everyone forgets, so keep those lubed and torqued.
I once had a creaking noise which I heard even with headphones on. I was 99% sure it came from the bottom bracket but after 2 days of service it came out to be coming from... the rear derailleur, where it's connected to the frame to be precise. I was very surprised... as much as the bike shop guy.
Great tips for finding the un-find-able squeak. You are right driving me crazy. Just took apart the front end of the bike (Headset, etc), Dropper Seat post and crank-set (but not BB as do not have the tool) and still squeaking. Worse part this is a brand new IBIS Ripley LS and every ride I deal with this. Will start to tear more down tomorrow and hopefully your tips will prove effective.
don't forget to check your wheel axles are nice and tight... the new QR axles are lovely and stiff, but can tend to come a bit loose when riding the bumpy stuff. This will also result in some terrible gear changing / chain noise... seems simple, but easy to miss.
latest problem I found was the casette. It made a sound like your spokes get squezed when I put load on the pedals with one of the first 3 gears. The noise was coming from the freehub what got out of greas.
I've narrowed my creak down to my suspension linkage. This is a great vid but it skipped over taking the rear end apart. An in depth suspension linkage maintenance and overhaul vid would be bangin! cheers guys
personally i had creeks from 2 more areas witch are not mentioned in the video: the first is the steerer tube, solved the problem by replacing the part. and the second one was coming from the rear brake disc, witch i also replaced, but i had the same problem again after very few rides.
My bike had a creak and I checked the saddle and headset. I had just replaced the pivot bolts. So I replaced the bb but it still creaked. Turns out the race face chainring is loose. I'm hoping tightening it will sort it (unless the splines are now knackered)
Most common source of creaks is seatpost, especially when you don't have dropper and lower your seat often. But for me hardest to find was creaks from cables going out of lower tube under bottom bracket to rear suspension (brakes and rear derailleur).
Always torque everything when you put it back together! Nothing worse than when someone tries to work on their own bike and messes it up by over/under tightening bolts. I see it happen to my buddies all the time.
In all cases, I'd recommend AAS Juice as lubricant of choice. Why? Because it's not really a lube, but more like an "anti friction grease". That sounds counter intuitive but it really works for me. Its perfect for preventing locked up bolts (cleats on shoes, for instance!) and to prevent creaks and whatnot especially in my seatpost. Perfect stuf.
I have the same Scott gambler 710 as Marc but I have a dent in the down tube could you possibly make a video to do with patching or covering a dent or something to do with bike protection? Thanks :)
Can you do an in depth video on how to take your linkage apart because I did it but the bearings were still stuck in the linkage and I couldn't get them out so I just drowned them in wd40 and then pumped them full of grease
Seatpost creaks are another tough one to find... Grease up your seatpost where it clamps in your frame/seat tube or use carbon prep if it's a carbon post.
And it's the most annoying sound of them all... those freaking snaps, drive me crazy. Thankfully removing the seatpost, cleaning and regreasing it keeps it silent for another 4 months.
Thank you very much! My bike's problem is the bottom bracket. When I'm watching this video I'm entertained. So i will subscribe to you! Hope you make other vids like this so i can watch how to make it right. :)
I used inner tube pieces rounded on my seat rails - its stopped the saddle from sliding and the creaks were gone :) It's kinda ghetto but it works great
I can't believe you didn't mention seatpost-seat tube creak, which is probably the most common, but oh well, your hand gesture compensates for the omission :D
00:06 If you think a creaks embarrassing, you should see the mechanical issues on my bike. (sidenote, my bikes a giant talon 2 2020) Brake lever is bent back on itself, handlebars twist of their own accord, chain constantly gets trapped, grip ends are stuck inside the ends of the bars (which are way too short for my style of riding) and, on top of it all, a creak.
Great vid.....but why would a creak be embarrassing ? I don't know about you but Im out to ride not show off my ride, be seen, or engage in any trendy BS.
Marc Ariss Oh, you do, and yet you still posed an obvious rethorical question to show to the whole world how empowered and independent you are. And then you shoot down a friendly commenter giving you a handwave. Isn't your style just the best? (
+jacob green Hi Jacob, a heavier weight grease is better for wetter weather but generally just keep your bearings regularly serviced and they should be fine! Cheers
I've developed a slight creak which comes from what sounds like the left side crank or bottom bracket when I'm pressing quite hard on the left pedal. Anyone know where this is likely to be coming from? I've got an Isis drive set from 2005.
could you please do a video on how to remove and install a press fit bb as i have one on my specialised enduro elite and its coming to the point where i need to put some more grease (i can fill it :-( !) and I'm not to sure how to do it as there is no clear video on youtube about it, if not local bike shop thank you for is video it helps!!!!!! keep up the amazing work on the channel !
+say what hi as far as a know its a SRAM, PF30, OS press-in bearings, sealed cartridge I'm not that sure what that really mean I'm looking for the specialised manual as we speak cheers for the comment !
+say whaat thank you for your very detailed answer as it sounds (a bit) complicated i think the bike shop will have to help me on that one as i don't want to risk it as it not worth it! thank you a lot for the comment
My shock makes a small clicking noise when it starts to rebound. Not too worried because the shop ordered a new one on warranty but any idea what it is?
Unbelievable. After changing the rear tire from wear and tear side wall began separating from the bead the creaking has completely disappeared. After all this time it was the tire. Can someone please explain to me how this could be? A tire causing creaking?
On my bike everytime I pedal there's a clicking noise coming from the bottom of the bike. But I've checked it and there nothing loose and nothing damaged what could I do to stop this
Tried everything still wont go still sound like its comming from my chainring or somewhere around there my bottom bracket feels smoothbut it is about 4 years old could that be the issues
i disagree! bloody bike will not look after you at all, i find mine frequently throws me overboard :) great vid, another thing to be looking out for...corr....
Hi guys you like downhill well I'm looking getting a budget downhill bike new the two I'm looking as is a torque dhx rock zone and a yt tues cf comp the spec are all most the same but the canyon has x01 gears and the yt has 27.5 dose wheel size make a big difference and the yt is £380 more thanks guys
What about creaking spoke nipples? During wet weather I find I have to add a drop of triflow lube to each nipple. But only a drop or spend hours soaking brake parts in alcohol.
Great video! I hate noisy bikes. Once, I bought a new bike to get away from a squeak that I later tracked down to be my seat. I got a new seat and then I had two bikes. 😜. Now I have a wife and she won't tolerate such madness anymore. Good to know how to track down creaks.
My bike clicks and creaks when I first start to peddle or if I'm peddling against the wind then it stops for a couple of minutes and then starts again. What has caused this? Any help would be very much appreciated. I want my silent bike back.
another simple solution not mentioned is - wear ear plugs or ear-buds and blast some music - guarantied to stop the creaking
Davor Schwarz that way you can get plowed over by a truck when you don't hear it coming up behind you, skidding sideways out of control and crossing the center line taking you out blindedly.
I'm headed to pick up some skull candy ear plugs now.
Davor Schwarz why do that when u can solve the problem
Hello I just want you to see this 4 years later
true lol
Done it!
I checked my bike everywhere for creaks until I realised it was my knees.
+Fuzzy Dunlop hahahahaha
Grease, grease, grease and if it wont stop. New knees.
or some duct-tape....i heard that stuff fixes everything! XD
Lukas Games ahahahHa
Dean LMAO

"stay on top of your pedals" always good advice :)
Grease...
Grease...
More grease...
And if that doesn't work...
New bearings. 😆😂 love it mark! Great advice! Mark 2K16
All your vids are simple, friendly and useful. Keep it up lads.
I had an annoying creak which surprising came from saddle... it was the result of incorrect torque setting while tightening...enjoyed the video 😀
latest problem I found was the casette. It made a sound like your spokes get squezed when I put load on the pedals with one of the first 3 gears. The noise was coming from the freehub what got out of greas.
Good video, guys! Thank you! But according to my experiance, the rear axle can creak too.
Great video. I find the stem faceplate and bolts can cause a creak too if they are dirty.
I've narrowed my creak down to my suspension linkage. This is a great vid but it skipped over taking the rear end apart. An in depth suspension linkage maintenance and overhaul vid would be bangin! cheers guys
+Robbie Waters True. It is on the to do list! Neil

+Michael Hurley just grease the pads
+clive ramsbotty loooooool good one dude :D
+samer younis and replaceable derailuer hangers and FOX stanchions and cable fittings and…
oh and seatpost! that happens heaps

I’m basically that guy you’re talking about in the first 10 seconds. This video was super helpful. Thanks!
I have only just chased down a creak on my full sus bike. Turned out to be the rear shock bushings. The Teflon coat on the top one had worn off.
Best looking bike I've seen. Ever.
In all cases, I'd recommend AAS Juice as lubricant of choice. Why? Because it's not really a lube, but more like an "anti friction grease". That sounds counter intuitive but it really works for me. i do wish they would put all the products they use in the description
YOU FORGOT THE SEAT POST! TWICE MY NEMESIS. remove completely and grease appropriately to materials of seatpOst and frame
Degreasing the Thru Axle works for me. I initially thought that it was the drivetrain and BB
Thank you very much! My bike's problem is the bottom bracket. When I'm watching this video I'm entertained. So i will subscribe to you! Hope you make other vids like this so i can watch how to make it right. :)
could you guys do a video on how to service a unsealed head set. Like the old type with ball bering.
Hey guys, I'm from Canada and I use my mountain bike a lot in the snow. Can you guys do a video on how to rust proof a bike?
I used inner tube pieces rounded on my seat rails - its stopped the saddle from sliding and the creaks were gone :) It's kinda ghetto but it works great
Any chance of a VPP service vid for Intense/Doctors Bikes please???
Could you do a video on how to replace remote lockout cables for the fork?
Great help thanks, wanted to sell my bike due to that noise.
I can't believe you didn't mention seatpost-seat tube creak, which is probably the most common, but oh well, your hand gesture compensates for the omission :D
what do you think of using lock tape instead of locktight to avoid suspension bolts creaking and eventually getting loose?
on my giant xtc slr 4 the creakings always comes from the seatpost =.= is it advisable to put some high grade grease around the seatpost???
0:08 why there is a shit load of inner tube on the dropper post
Yes i know its for proeting the stancion but it looks weird isn't it??
00:06

+Marc Ariss Heh, you obviously don't realize how judgemental the bike community can be ;)
Oskar Elek Oh I do, the difference is that I don't care....I wasn't really looking for an answer to the question.
Marc Ariss Oh, you do, and yet you still posed an obvious rethorical question to show to the whole world how empowered and independent you are. And then you shoot down a friendly commenter giving you a handwave. Isn't your style just the best? (
Oskar Elek Projection of any implied tone via text chat is simply silly. Have a nice day.
+Oskar Elek we call them wankers in australia
I'm having trouble taking apart my gt fury 2014 linkage can u do a video or give some info?
thank you for your information
Great vid! But you should make a video on how to clean up your cockpit. ;)
hi what type of grease is best for wet weather use thanks
+jacob green Hi Jacob, a heavier weight grease is better for wetter weather but generally just keep your bearings regularly serviced and they should be fine!
Cheers
Where would you check first if the bike bike was a couple of weeks old only has about 30 miles on it . It’s a trek hardtail.
here in Brazil, front brake is always on left hand... any special reason to use it on the right side?
to be like a motorcycle, I think
What grease are you using for the bottom bracket?
I've developed a slight creak which comes from what sounds like the left side crank or bottom bracket when I'm pressing quite hard on the left pedal. Anyone know where this is likely to be coming from? I've got an Isis drive set from 2005.
How is your shapeshifter doing on this Canyon Strive CF 9.0 Team?
It's creaking! :)
What is possible problem, when pedalling uphill the noise of creaks will be hear loudest?
where can I find the torque settings for my linkage. I have a old 2008 trek topfuel. just about to stri[ and grease but worried of over tightening
do you need any special tool to disassemble BB?
Locktight on a pf30 helps with the Creeking
You should also grease the crank arms on the bottom bracket that can Creak
Could the creeks come from a small crack in the frame as well?
Hey guys, i've got like a rattling creak in the crank? Do you know what could be the problem here?
Check it is tight.
could you please do a video on how to remove and install a press fit bb as i have one on my specialised enduro elite and its coming to the point where i need to put some more grease (i can fill it :-( !) and I'm not to sure how to do it as there is no clear video on youtube about it, if not local bike shop thank you for is video it helps!!!!!! keep up the amazing work on the channel !

Super good video Mark!!
I think my front spokes/wheel is creaking - what do I do? Tighten spokes?
Marc are u racing at cairns World Cup this year
My shock makes a small clicking noise when it starts to rebound. Not too worried because the shop ordered a new one on warranty but any idea what it is?
+Justin F loose bolts? or needs lubricating?
+neil crompton I think it's the shock. I took it to the lbs and they are ordering a new shock. I tightened all the pivot bolts
fork seals can make noises too
The seat clamp also kinda creeks when the bolt is loose. If cleaning it doesn't work try tightening that clamp :)
`2 of My pivot bolts won't turn out. Put some penetrating fluid on them .What else can I do ?
Unbelievable. After changing the rear tire from wear and tear side wall began separating from the bead the creaking has completely disappeared. After all this time it was the tire. Can someone please explain to me how this could be? A tire causing creaking?
i have a hardtail and checked everythiing on the bike but the creak is still there, its only just breaked in and tuned
what else can i check??
What kind of grease is that I need to order some
Any general purpose grease will do. 4 bucks for a cartridge of that stuff will last you years.
On my bike everytime I pedal there's a clicking noise coming from the bottom of the bike. But I've checked it and there nothing loose and nothing damaged what could I do to stop this
Also,,,,take off the cassette clean and apply some grease to the hub that the cassette sits on as a dry/dirty one can creek .
What brand are the bar grips
The creak on my bike sounds like the front suspension any tips for this?
My crank bolts always become loose within a few days of riding. Could you help me?
Lock tight
loctite
Tried everything still wont go still sound like its comming from my chainring or somewhere around there my bottom bracket feels smoothbut it is about 4 years old could that be the issues
i disagree! bloody bike will not look after you at all, i find mine frequently throws me overboard :) great vid, another thing to be looking out for...corr....
My RockShox monarch rc3 makes a weird squish noise but I think its normal from what I have read.
Awesome ultra professional Marc, as always :)
Hi guys you like downhill well I'm looking getting a budget downhill bike new the two I'm looking as is a torque dhx rock zone and a yt tues cf comp the spec are all most the same but the canyon has x01 gears and the yt has 27.5 dose wheel size make a big difference and the yt is £380 more thanks guys
my bike is brand new i heard it from the back but i pushed on my front suspension and it creaks everytime the wheel does a full spin
are those mavic tires?
do you guys run a bike shop?
+Kristen Walton No! Probably a good thing...
Great video! Great explanation! ......Thank you.
What about creaking spoke nipples? During wet weather I find I have to add a drop of triflow lube to each nipple. But only a drop or spend hours soaking brake parts in alcohol.
Awesome video guys thanks!
Great video! I hate noisy bikes. Once, I bought a new bike to get away from a squeak that I later tracked down to be my seat. I got a new seat and then I had two bikes. 😜.
Now I have a wife and she won't tolerate such madness anymore. Good to know how to track down creaks.
Matt Harris sure you have a wife.. pffft loser
what type of grease?
is that a new wheel size in the back?
My bike clicks and creaks when I first start to peddle or if I'm peddling against the wind then it stops for a couple of minutes and then starts again. What has caused this? Any help would be very much appreciated. I want my silent bike back.
What solved the issue for me was to replace the chain. I was already having issues with the chain, and when I replaced it, it stopped the creaking
what does it mean to feel play?
To feel any movement, or wiggle.
What's that red grease?
Hi!
Which grease do you use and where can it be applied?
Thank you!!
most bearing grease works
What about the creaking in the cassette
bay I have a creak on my bike it's coming from the back and it's a hard tail what should I do?
+UHDprojects maybe suggest greasing your seatpost and then seatpost clamp from your saddle, clean, grease and reassemble!
can i use the grease from muc off everywhere on my bike?
Yes except for disk brakes
hi guys my fork creeks and wobbles is this normal and what should I do
Cameron Wills buy new one
Maybe we have also creaking from the front forks if there are a play
Don’t some new bikes creek a bit when they’re breaking in though???
You guys are awesome 👍
This is a dead obvious one but I’ve had a creak before that I thought was bottom bracket only to find out it was the chain! Keep that chain lubed gang
