    This is great info, I definitely don't lock my center often enough! Mostly because I had an FJ before and it was part time 4x4 so it's not a habit of mine to worry about a center dif, I'll definitely be locking it more often now!

    Probably the best video to describe full time differential limitations vs just locking the gears.

  • @mikearend997

    Good explanation. Most folks don't know how this Torsen diff works. It's also worth mentioning that you should change the center diff oil, in fact, the front and rear diff oil at 30,000 mile (50,000kms) intervals. Also, if you do major water crossings and have not run diff vent lines up to a higher location, you should change your diff oil after every water crossing that totally immerses them.

    Good video! Just curious. My gx460 has a clunk that is noticeable after coming to a stop and the proceeding to apply acceleration. Is this something this would cause? This is my wife’s vehicle and has had zero off-road time at all. But the sound seems to be coming from this area.

    Can someone help me understand why in the manual/card in sun visor says not to use center diff lock when a wheel is in the air? Isn’t that contradictory to what this video is advising?

    • @jaycarl1562
      @jaycarl1562 ปีที่แล้ว

      It refers to when the car is being worked on, lifted off the ground by a lift. In this case, you do not lock it because the vehicle is not in motion. When the vehicle is in motion, while off roading, you should lock it.

      Lock it offroad to get 50/50 split... same as any other 4x4 when going off road. Example, 4H/L in a 4runner TRD pro or a Wrangler gives 50/50 split. Default in a GX460 is 60/40 split with some slippage allowed (LSD)

    Do you happen to know if this applies to 4th gen 4runners (v6) that have 2H/4H/4L and locking center diff? I'm under the impression that when in 4H unlocked the differential behaves just like the full time systems. Thanks!

    • @LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD
      @LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If its a limited slip center diff then yes, frictional wear will occur. If it's an OPEN center differential then no wear will occur. I am not familiar with If that gen differential is LSD or open. My guess is it's probably an LSD since the type C Torsen has been around for many years. Thank you for your comments 🙏
