Scott, I've been looking for back and hamstring exercises that won't cause any more damage to an already damaged back, and this one works great for me. It makes my existing pain go away, so something about it is really working for me. I'm really focusing on the technique and using light weight at the gym and no weight but the same movement at work when I'm on the run. I figure sooner or later I'll add more weight at the gym, when I'm absolutely sure I'm good on the technique. Thanks so much.
We had a gorilla ( best way to describe him) that used to come into our gym and get topless in the weights area. He was impressive , can't fault him , other than being a total dick. The good thing was that he would clear the weights area in no time as most of the wannabes were so intimidated they ran for the hills.
I was teaching a class of elderly people ( age 75-96 for this particular class) today, and this is almost verbatim what I said to them as I instructed. My hope is that I can help prevent falls by adding proper hip hinging to our routine.
Was doing RDL's today for the first time, and now I've realized I was doing like shitty form half rep deadlifts accidentally instead. Now I think I'll know how to do this right next time.
I sure will. :) I have been getting more into doing those lifts in my routines. I will have a Front Squat video soon too. I have been doing ti for two months now perfecting my form to teach all of you :)

Thanks Scott for this demo & all of the tips & demo's you have created. I have learn't a lot about technique and in particular why I keep getting injured !
Looking up puts pressure in the cervical spine which can end up being detrimental. Looking up is a good method to prevent rounding or flexion, but if it can be done with a chin tuck it's optimal.
Thanks bud, this actually helped a lot. I work out at home in my apartment so I can't do the other deadlifts without my neighbors hating me. This has encouraged me to do them in my leg workouts, and properly, before I was steering clear because it was more back-snaps than anything.
scraping your shins/knees is a pretty normal thing, and as far as i know a good thing too, because if you scrape your knees or shins it means that you're keeping the bar closer to your center/core, thereby putting less strain on your spine
this exercise was made popular by coach dragomir cioroslan and lifter nicu vlad obviously both are from romania. dragomir had nicu do this to help the middle part of his clean and snatch pull. an iron mind journalists saw them do it after a coaching seminar in the usa. he asked what they were doing, they didnt have a name for it so they decided to call it the romanian deadlift.
It takes a while to get your body used to doing RDL, I do them all the time now, but I wasn't comfy either, but after a couple of months I can see that when done right they do great things for you. Keep the weight light for a while and have a spotter watching your back so you know you're not arching the wrong way
its totally meant that way, just think about the force the farther away the bar is from your centre the harder the lift gets and the worse your back is affected --> try to always hold the bar as close to the front as possible scraping is good / ideal
Sorry what I mean is if you do deads (back day) on Tuesday and squats (legs day) on Wednesday (hypothetically speaking), would you do it back to back or one week you go hard on deads and the next week you go hard on squats?
1:00 If your back is arched, you're doing an SLDL wrong. You gotta push the weight towards your body to keep it up/down, and you pivot in the middle. If your back arches, you fail. Either the weight is too high, or you form sucks. But yeah, SLDL feels more stable so I do it over RDLs
That's probably a good thing. As they teach you to deadlift, they recommend almost rolling the bar up your leg. If it's a regular deadlift, you've got very good form. If it's the RDL? Can't say.
Me every time I watch a video of yours: AWESOME! Now I know to fix my mistakes! Also me: Oh, I've been doing this wrong............................... for the entire year I've been working out.
Is it better to do this exercise with heavy weights and low reps? Or doable weights that can get higher reps? Sometimes I feel myself losing grip on heavier weights
I don't get to do enough squat/deadlift because I run and bike for cardio, which really kill my glycogen stores for these lifts. I think the cardio is more important than big legs...so this is like a lift I only do occasionally.
Off topic, but I was once doing RDLs with dumbells, and pushed the hips through at the top of the exercise, and brought the dbells together, which crushed my nads. Be careful out there.
ScottHermanFitness Over the course of the month since I've watched your video, my hams are noticeably larger to the sight and touch. I've also gained a few inches on my vertical. Keep up the good work.
hi scott. i broke my arm yesterday... are my biceps, triceps, pecs, and back muscles screwed? I can still do crunches and shrug with no weights and in maybe a week i'll be able to squat with a backpack if i'm careful.
I did this the other day, and my lower back is really killing me. I don't know if I went too low, but is not supposed to hurt there? Just above my waist and behind my obliques?
Absolutely man I feel a ton of pain in my lower back too when I do this. It's normal when you do it with lots of weight. Remember one thing: no pain no gainz! Embrace that pain to get them gainz!
@@JoeyCentral Excellent advice. Then when you really manage to fuck up your back, you'll have all the pain and lose the gainz. My uncle has had chronic back pain for 30 years because he lifted through pain.
@@JoeyCentral There's two kinds of pain. There's the good pain when you push yourself. And then there's the bad pain that basically screams that you're on the road to an injury. In this case it's the bad pain.
Hey Scott, if you do deadlifts on back days and squats on leg days (not saying this is your split but if it was or is), do you do it consecutively or one week you do squats and one week you do deadlifts?
I am trying to get into more this style of lifting, and I just tried a few sets of what i would say is pretty light weight, 115lbs for 12-15 reps. I felt this 90% in my lower back. I am really trying to concentrate on keeping everything straight, not rounding out my back, etc. Is that normal for beginners, should I just keep at em? Any advice is much appreciated.
no it is very normal or even considered healthy to actually scrape it just a bit it just means the bar is closest to you which is the correct form and if you champion deadlifters they actually have huge scares its not the prettiest thing the closer to your center balance point the easier the better the form will be believe me
