In the fishing world, your videos are some of the best around. You teach in an informative way, yet you teach so that it still requires an individual to put the actual time in on the water.

Thanks so much Rich. This series has been excellent in teaching new fishermen like myself how to read the beach. I finally caught my first two surfperch today after getting skunked a few days in a row and they were exactly where you said they like to hide--at the edge of a hole waiting for the waves to wash food from a nearby sandbar into it. You're the man!

Wow, thank you. I had been trying to fish past the sandbar thinking that that was the best approach because it would be deeper. I never thought to fish in the shallow trough right against the sandbar slope, nor did I think to look for a cut to fish in. I'll definitely try those next time.
Hi T. When I was back on Long Island, I was one of the most restless fishermen you could ever fish with, which is why I didn't fish with many people and those that did understood me and didn't take offense when I took off lol. I look for fish at every change of bottom because I typically don't know what bait they may be on (I fish mostly at night) so they may be tight to the beach or at the end of a long cast. They may be running the backs of troughs, or chasing bait in and out of troughs, and if their not at one set of structures, I run down to the next. Conversely, if there isn't a lot of structure available, I'll sniff out a dip between bars and stand my ground because if fish are around, sooner or later, they'll follow the contour into the dip. Sometimes it's just gut feeling and sometimes it what I smell (don't laugh). Be well and stay safe.

I gave up on fishing after going on successive trips where I went home empty-handed. Sucks to spend time, money, and energy for nothing. Watched and read so many fishing info too. But after seeing you're back and uploaded a new vid, I felt a glimmer of hope of catching that fish. Thanks for this truly.
Anything worth doing takes time, don't give up. Ask a local bait and tackle what's biting and they will usually help you out.

Great video and information. I study the beach several times a week in Florida. It changes over time and with storms. They key is to take your time and study the wave action. That tells you what you need to know! :-)

@@richtroxler The European Bass is my target species, related but a fair bit smaller to your own striped Bass. Lots to target in the surf...
Just watched a video of a guy catching a couple small ones. They look like their feeding habits are similar to striped bass. This guy caught them off of a jetty. Looked like fun!
@@richtroxler they are fun at all sizes, a 10 pound fish is considered the fish of a lifetime! Pretty slow growing, and under a lot of commercial pressure unfortunately
Very informative, and very well explained so that anyone can understand. After mainly fishing and boating in lakes all my life, I've recently developed the desire to start fishing beaches and shoreline for saltwater species which I love to eat. Thanks!

Well. I admit it. I’m one of those guys at the OBX getting skunked. Thanks for the informative video. I’m headed out to ramp 32 and will and try and scout a better place to catch.
It happens. The Reds are just starting up here and will probably get going after this blow coming up the coast this week. But it's always the same, I jump around a lot and fish different stages of the tide. It's never a lock but I do look for certain types of water and I do associate those types of water with tides / winds & baits (either mullet or spot). The best you can hope for is to increase your chances of putting bait in the path of fish that are feeding. Keep at it and have a good fall.
I go back to these videos frequently. Some info on reading a beach with quartering wave would be great. A NE wind really complicates things.
Hi Gordon. I assume by quartering waves, you mean waves coming in from angles, not rolling directly in, yes? Also, a NE wind depends on where you are, meaning the the position of the shore in relation to the wind. For some beaches (and species), a NE wind is desirable, for many others it sucks. If I understand your meaning of quartering waves correctly, then perhaps I might do a small addendum video on it. They can be difficult, but they obey the same rules of physics. Thanks for watching.

That was quick! Yes, waves coming ashore at angles. Winter in North Carolina and Florida. Aside - do you build your guitars? Keep up the good work!
Hi Gordon. Yeah I can see why waves coming in at angles would be interesting. The point at Buxton gets them coming in from all over sometimes. I'll see if I can shoot some footage up near cape henry va, or maybe the other side of the cbbt. They can come in at angles on any beach depending on wind, but one of the interesting things I've touched on briefly is that bottom contour can change wave direction and sometimes you see waves colliding from two directions. That's definitely bottom contour and would make a good topic for a video. As for you question, yes, I do build guitars. Haven't lately but the last music vid I put up "A Comets Tale" was done with one that I built.

Good sir, could you please do a video explaining the different tackles you use on the beach, depending on target species and weather conditions? I lot of times when i fish the beach, even if i can identify where should my bait be, always feel like my bait is getting blown all over the place by waves, have no idea how to keep them in the target zones.
That's a very good idea. I had planned to do something similar, sort of a primer for those wanting to learn to fish the surf, but I've just been so busy that I haven't made the time. I think I'll start work on it :-)

hi Rich! new subscriber here. Maraming salamat po!!! (thank you Sir in tagalog) Ha! now I know that what I am seeing is a "cut", btw how do you fish a cut? or where would the fish be in a cut? closer to shore or further out, at the sides? New to surf fishing, out of curiosity I once cast on a cut and left the bail open and couldn't believe how much line the rip tide pulled out of the reel as it swept my rig outward, is there even any good in that thinking deeper will lead to bigger fish?
Hi there! Sorry for the late reply. been on a 7 day a week work binge. Think of a cut as a deeper highway for bait and predator fish to move in and out of. They are not always there but at some stage of the tide they will usually make their move through the cut. I prefer to fish the edges as bait try to skirt the edges and most predator fish relate to edges. But it never hurts to work the whole area around a cut because the species in your area may prefer something different. Regardless, a cut is a good piece of structure to stick around. Hi, I'm a subscriber of your channel and always enjoying your videos! Thanks a lot. Recently I bought 10' Daiwa FT surf rod and when I tried to cast 3oz sinker, it didn't go as far as expected, but ive been able to cast far with my other slimmer and more flexible rods with 1 to 2oz sinkers. What do u think might be the reason?
1) my casting technique?
2) sinker weight? Daiwa FT is designed to cast up to 4oz according to the seller
3) flexibility of Daiwa FT?
Or other reasons?
Hi Joseph. I have a new video coming out very soon that talks about rods / reels and tackle. As for your question, it could be the taper of the rod and the type of composite it's made out of. Did you use the same reel and line for both, because if you used a different reel on each rod, then that's a factor also. Lastly, it actually gets harder to throw bigger sinkers. Every rod has it's sweet spot, a weight that loads it the best. You didn't say how long the other rods are, but as you get heavier and heavier weight, it gets more difficult to get distance, basically takes more arm energy. Try some different reels and lines with the Daiwa 10' and see if that helps.
