UPDATE -- I'm going to try to work through the book more carefully this time, and will post my thoughts here: twitter.com/GeorgeKao/status/1741882619254505661
Couldn't agree more with you on every single point. I felt off about this whole approach from the start, the cost of the book (privileged gatekeeping), the inauthenticity of "I'm not expecting anything", the exhaustion, the lack of boundaries. Stepping away completely from this approach is what has made my business successful and stopped me having burnout cycles from over-offering coaching. You are spot on.
@@GeorgeKaoCommunity😂😂not at all. I have lots of coaches in my network who feel the same way, and while some aspects of the book like service-first and separating self-worth from pricing are aligned with us, so much of it feels so inauthentic. Thank you for putting words to it! It's good that some people have found value from it, but there are SO many of us who feel some ickiness around it because it doesn't feel truly authentic as a model. There are always hidden expectations or feelings of discomfort or guilt and it feels lacking in transparency - the truth is I'm offering someone a sample as part of my sales process, and they are absolutely welcome to say no (and so am I), but to pretend I am indifferent to someone becoming a client is a lie. I think especially for coaches starting out when they do actually really need clients, for money, for reputation, for their own opportunity to develop, it's impossible to not care about the outcome. Thank you for being honest!
George I suggest you read the entire book and then provide a comprehensive and authentic point of view /criticism of the book to your audience. For example I watched your entire video before leaving my comment. Now when it comes to offering up a free coaching session, that is nothing new. Rich didn't invent it. Care professionals and creative experts provide consultations for free and they go for about 15 to 90mins. This is a sales system to demonstrate proof of concept. It's a model that many businesses use to give an experience of coaching to potential clients and promising leads. This is also useful for people who feel better offering a part of their service for free. If you are a coach with plenty of clients and promising leads because you have substantial work displayed on the internet, your website or other platforms that provide people an experience of your work then that is absolutely not necessary. However many of Rich's clients are people who are transitioning into coaching and they may not have proof of concept when it comes to their work as a coach and the only way to establish authority is to demonstrate that they understand the client's problem and are competent to solve them or help them solve them. Bottom line is if you have the time for free sessions and you enjoy it then offer it. It has benefitted me earlier in my career and it is now a part of my business where I volunteer my time to coach others. There is no attachment to whether they become my client because 80% of the time when they propose to work with me I refer them to my other clients who are also coaches because I don't want to take them on personally but simply to help them take the big leap to doing the deep work of personal and professional growth. Hence I disagree with the notion that we all want to charm them and then guilt them into becoming our clients. That has never been the case for me. It is simply to establish a fit and to help the person being coached. The rare instances when I do take up a client after a free session is simply because I believe that I am the best coach for them and the journey they want to go on. Nevertheless if you have a better system to establish your authority as a coach or professional then you can skip the process of offering free consultation/session altogether. I simply treat the free session as a consultation which lasts for around 15 to 45mins. You can also offer a 90mins free session if that is how you choose to provide charity or build/create your clients. Nevertheless it's a suggestion and not a rule. Find what works for you. There are many things that you can criticize about the book just like any non-fiction book out there. The ideas in them are simply about providing options and solutions regarding key problems. Any solution or point of view are customizable and only suggestions. In the end you must take full responsibility for creating the kind of life you want. You have to do the work. Till then, shine bright. Live full.
Maybe you should listen to the book, it’s about connecting to people, real connections and not being needy, but giving service, like Jim Rohn said, „If you help enough people to get what they want, you can get everything you want. Showing people what value you give so the world know what you do. Also only taking customers that are committed, “either a hell yes or a no.” Another thing is they say every coach needs to have a coach. I was a bit confused about the 2 hours to so I’ll give you that. LL Rob.
I actually loved this book! I would encourage you george, to read it yourself and maybe some of your opinions may change based on the summaries you hear from a secondary source as opposed to the primary source itself? I think what *the book is trying to say is to create organic conversations that also place you in the known authority of the recipient as a coach so that the container is set up like so. Organic conversations can last an hour to 2 hours I would say :-)*
This book was worth every penny for me. I want to lead a service and heart centered business, and I wanted to do it successfully. The DNA of being an adult is knowing that one size doesn't fit all. This approach has worked for so many AND had an impact on countless communities who were served!
AND - to be clear, the free time up front is also FOR ME. To get a sense if someone is coachable and if I am the right person to help them. I often refer people out after my time with them because I am focused on what would serve them most.
With due respect to you... I have given several of 2 hours of my time, and no one has been signedup or obligated to sign up with me. In fact they loved it and wanted to explore more of it. I have seen this as an opportunity for fitment. I have recently got my coach after 3 sessions with him (no charge). I am not obligated but I see a value in it... only then I signed up. I have taken few sessions from other coaches as well, full blown 90 to 120 min. At the end of session I am thankful to their time and didnt signedup with them as I was yet to see a match or more value
Lol. 9:37 Totally. Your comment about spending two hours of intense coaching with a client being draining for introverts is spot on. I’d be spent for the day almost. For me with teaching mind-body movement, a 2-4 hour day is a significant impact mentally and creatively, not to mention physically. But others in my field can do 5-8 hours or more on a long term basis..somehow. Yes maybe they are more extroverted as you bring up. I used to do all those hours and it was pretty brutal.
I paid a fortune to go to Rich Litvin's in person event in 2016 or 17. I got all the way to Santa Monica and couldn't make myself go inside. I spent 4 days on the beach instead, lol. You didn't miss anything not reading the book.
wow, @michellewolff11, say more, please!! what compelled you to sign up, AND, what happened in your thinking that you ditched the event?? i am super curious. thank you!!
It’s just a book, not a prescription. I guess we could all use critical thinking skills, “cum grano salis”. There is no book or author I would trust 100% as we all have bounded rationality. For me it is enough if I get at least one good idea from a book, seminar and the like.
I recently heard some interesting advice that I enjoyed from another coach out there... He said he doesn't read the usual business/success books but instead reads fiction. He said it's important to let the mind relax. I like this advice as it's so easy to get stuck in a trap of constantly seeking the right "secret" when the real solution is to simply create/write/film etc. Save your brainpower for actual work 👍
If you know Chandler from his talks and teachings, you know that he LOVES when ppl do the opposite of what he teaches, in fact his curiosity is his main drive and he is willing to learn knew things from everyone, everyday. The suggestions he hands out are simply an offer and nothing more. Judgment is the killer of growth. And I feel sad for the fact that this Video needed so much nagging in "how altruistic" etc they wanna appear with their 2 hour session they suggest. Look I get it. The two hours might not be a match for many Coaches nor Clients. But a responsible reader will know that and will still be able to learn something new reading this chapter about that. Most sad made me the fact that you, another Coach, attacks another Coach (Litvin) for changing a piece of his approach. That should be something we all (author or not) shouldn't be ashamed or afraid of, when we see that something else serves more, to put it out there. And not to fear that other colleges rip apart the words we use to offer an insight that we have about stuff we wanna change and see different. Especially when it has been shared with many many people. This also could have been the same video (topic wise) only saying "look what I do not like about the book is the approach of a 2 hour session for this and that reason. And I am so glad that there is now even a Video that revisits exactly this and suggest a shorter sample session."
Thank you for sharing your point of view! I haven’t made it through the book either and now I know why… I too thought who the heck has 2 hours to coach someone for free- let alone the energy! Makes so much sense! Glad I found you - it’s helping me gain a lot of clarity! I found you through another amazing intuitive and insightful guy … Alex Baisley who I just had the wonderful opportunity to meet in a coaching session this week! 🤯
I appreciate your review but I do think you’ve misunderstood the 2 hour call - and your opinion of the entire book is based on your disagreement with these 2 hour calls. the authors talk about prequalifying people prior to that call. And there is so much other stuff to learn from the book. It’s sad that you couldn’t get through reading it. But it’s ok if it wasn’t for you.
its very entertaining to see you so emotional and annoyed for once... :) its a nice change. Plus you are obviously rightfully annoyed. the premise of how they are looking for clients seems coercive to start with!
I would strongly advise against using the guy who is the topic of this video. Firstly I invested in his TE program and so many people complained that he had to double the length of the course. Secondly, he does not know when to stop. I have been told by someone who paid to join his ridiculously expensive 4PC group that he really over-stepped the mark and really upset them as he made really inappropriate comments about this persons partner. Thirdly, I know of one person who was also on his TE program that they ended up believing that they would become the next President of some CEE country. This persons parents had to put them into psychiatric care. Finally, my own partner (who I originally supported) is now in psychiatric care because of what this guy’s coaching triggered. So be aware!
Wow, I'm so sorry to hear about all this. I don't have any experience with this programs, so I can't confirm. I've heard good things from the few people I know who have interacted with him, but I'm sure there are others I don't know, who have been hurt as you have. In this video I was only talking about the ideas presented in his book.
Thanks for your concern. I want to make people aware of the damage that can be caused by this persons coaching and that as they have no certification, there is no organisation where you can make a formal complaint to about them.
LOL! It is the most expensive book for what it is in my experience. Another coach send me the pdf of it for free! I like the idea of selling the experience which is true. I hadn't got to the bit that George is talking about :WOW! eye opener

Thank you so much. I'm glad I'm not crazy! About this, anyway 😆

Yep! One size doesn't fit all, which is why I talked about why *I* disliked it 😊 but I am glad it worked well for you🙏🏼

life balance is ALL about giving and receiving. If i am spending two hours of my time and knowledge - I want to get something in return. Period.
random person at the grocery store lol! He says speak to your network or connections to those. He reckons every one knows someone who has money.

WOW to the cost. Most books give a time on Kindle Unlimited to get it moving then that $15 ish that you said. A ex
You're not alone, deep down it's manipulative and gross.
