One thing fromsoftware do sometimes is storytelling through combat. In this case it shows that the 2 could be brother and sister. You'll notice that Messmer's boss music is the same as that of radagon but Radagon's ost is a more heroic version which also communicates to the player thst they might be related
@@el_mer01 first time I heard Messmer's OST, I noticed the similarity between it and Radagon's OST. It's just unhearable for me. I didn't connect the dots as "wow, they totally must be related" but I sure thought like "Holy shit, that part is literally from Radagon's OST". Miyazaki sure loves to put some supericial but sweet easter eggs.
Both have long-ass poking sticks, winged helmets, and surprisingly both are dex-scaling weapons. They sure will enjoy the company of each other upon meeting, maybe even a friendly duel!
im no lore expert, but considering the timeline from Marika's ascent to godhood and then her marriage to Godfrey, Messmer would have been born between that time. I can't think of anyone else besides Radagon who could possibly be the father, so that would imply Messmer is immediate family to Malenia. it would also explain why he's cursed with this serpent, just like Malenia being vulnerable to the rot god's influence. it was super cool seeing their similarities in this video, especially the grab animation!! i like to imagine messmer taught his lil sis that haha
Not only Messmer is also similiar to Malenia in appearence but they are also closely siblings as Messmer is very likely an empyrian, but one who was different by all the others having a serpent akin to full obscurity.
i had a feeling that Messmer felt familiar when fighting him, it was on the tip of my tongue and i just couldnt grasp it This, quite literally this, opened my eyes to what my gut felt back then. nice work showcasing it
@@sermalevolent1858 Thanks! I thought that Messmer was similar to Malenia when I fought him for the first time too. It just became more obvious each time I fought him.
Malenia, my favorite one in ER (boss and lore and character) And Messmer, one of my favorite bosses in the DLC (but Romina and Midra are in the same spot with him, three on top 1)
I'd disagree except for Waterfowl. It's mostly about personal preference if we extract Waterfowl from equation, and I love Malenia more than any other boss in the gaming industry. Respect to Messmer fans too!
Elden Ring already said that a souls game can be very different than what it was up to today. Open world is "not a souls thing", non-grey color palette is "not a souls thing", being able to have fun is "not a souls thing", I've seen many types of comments about it. If you want to see the EXACT same formulas as the old games, you may play fifa games as well.
@@dsuable_ We’re actually in agreement, I just think Waterfowl (and that clone move) did a lot of damage to Malenia’s fight. I think her base moveset is the best, most fun to learn they’ve ever made, but Messmer’s is also very good, and he has several Waterfowl-esque attacks that are more balanced and satisfying to learn, plus those snake attacks give him the cinematic edge.
I definitely agree with you. Clone attack of Malenia has only one problem, some clones attack twice, which causes frame-trap if you don't time your dodge very well. Running straight away is a good solution for not taking any damage from that attack, so I wouldn't say it damages the fight experience with Malenia as much as waterfowl does. I like dodging waterfowl, and it also doubles the satisfaction when you dodge it perfectly and beat the boss, but I'd definitely agree that it kills the basic fight experience.
@powerpuch9342 I mean, this is more of a subjective topic. I usually rank bosses on what they present me: Rellana: better Malenia with no staggering on boss and funnier punishes. Too hard and weird to be the best, but the best imo. Bayle: CURSEE YOUUU BAYLEEE. Everything is perfect except when it comes to fighting the boss. Messmer: easier malenia. Midra: a fun dummy for me to hit him constantly. (I like him but he is too easy) Radahn: trash. List could change with anyone's perspective of course, with exception of Radahn. He is trash in every multiverse, in every timeline, in every body, every hole he hides or takes control of.
Them: fighting over who is the harder boss
Meanwhile it being Soldier of God, Rick
This is the comment I was waiting for!
@@dsuable_ you’re welcome!
Malenia: "He does exactly what I do."
Messmer: "But better."
So Messmer is Malenia with Morgott's backstory and Rykards aesthetic.

I don't respect malenia's game design, that boss combat doesn't suit in souls genre @@dsuable_
