The saddest part about that truce is that it very clearly has shown that the problems only existed inbetween the highest levels of the government. But the men? They just wanted to live and let live.
It pains me to realize that most of these people, who befriended each other during the peace, would end up in the tragedies of the First World War. This was the last year they could see each other as humans instead of enemies. The video is as wholesome as it is saddening, and I cried like a bitch throughout most of it.
I made a joke about it in the comment section, but damn, putting into perspective that this was all happening while innocents were massacred and young men were forced out of their homes is super depressing. I was on the verge of bursting into tears over circles talking in TTS for fuck’s sake.
1:48 this scene is the saddest. It shows how the soldiers in the front all had their own separate lives and families, and how they probably wouldn’t ever see them again.
I honestly don't even know how fighting even resumed after that event... The troops probably hesitated to kill the enemy due to the friends they made...
This really showed when these men realized that behind every gunsight, inside every trench, inside planes, ships, tanks, even on horseback was a person. A person with their own history, family, and culture. And for that week they forgot about the horrors of war and treating the otherside like enemies and sat around and told jokes, talked about their families, and played football not as soldiers but people.
Saddest part was, is that after the truce they most likely were back to fightin, it’s probable that most of those soldiers didn’t live to see the war end and even if they did, they would still have to deal with ww2.
"Christmas 1914. A human miracle is about to happen...It never happened again. Any war, Anywhere. but for one day, one year a very long time ago. Everyone just laid down their weapons. and started to sing."
Actually it happened to the French units in 1915 in flanders due to mass flooding forcing both sides to abandon the trenches on Christmas Day. And in 1916 with some of the Canadian and Indian units, though it was never on the scale of 1914
@@acebalistic1358 If some context could be given for the one in 1916, thanks. As for the 1915 one, it seems it wasn't really done out of a mutual want to just celebrate the holiday and was more because of a forced leaving of the trenches and a want to not fight in the open without the safety trenches provide.
An English man was crying whilst this was happening When asked why he was crying he said: "I'm not crying because I hate this, but I know tomorrow we will be fighting each other again." Rest in peace to all of the brave soldiers who died in ww1, both German and British/French
@@elqueobserva7663 well not really the only way the war would end at least in the western front would either be the schlieffen plan working by christmas or they agree for a truce in the western front
We really need the Christmas Truce to become an hour long(ish) play, not just the truce itself, but everything that happened before and afterwards. And showing the stories of specific people involved, so basically some parts would have a slice of life feel

I'm from the UK, Scotland to be specific. I love Germany no matter what, I have a friend from Germany too so I've been learning German and the fact that I can watch this is amazing.
A year later, and Christmas Truce is still very touching, yet sad. Imagine playing football with people that you will be fighting against the next day. Christmas Truce will always be remembered, every single year.
Yep.. honestly, I think that the saddest part of WW1 was that one day; they were fighting, then, another day, they were temporarily friends! Then, they were forced to again, fight their newfound friends…
Fun Fact: This is actually true, as 5 months into WW1 there was a ceasefire during Christmas and some on both sides did celebrate together. It was known as the Christmas Truce
I learned about this as I do History, Apparently (and this is sad), some almost sectors of the frontlines didn’t want to true, whether the it was the Germans or the Allies, so people would walk out of the trench to talk and have fun, but would be shot dead by a sniper. Also also, British and German High Command didn’t want them to truce, so they started sending false information to the soldiers like “The Germans are planning an attack.” Or “The Germans are trying to make you sick.” So they would retreat back and fight. Some Generals believed this so they fired a flare to tell the soldiers to come back. Not sure if this is all true btw.
Honestly, despite them only knowing one another for what, a few minutes / hours it makes sense, everyone had to have been tired of fighting given what the horrors of war beings to the people who are caught in it. So yeah, I'd say this is true, cause who'd want to fight new allies despite being completely different from the other side?
Sad the soldiers just wanted some peace and the generals are just like: sToP eNjOyInG yOuRsElVeS aNd FiGhT tHoSe BaStArDs AlReAdY I mean DUDE THEY HAD AN AWFULLY GOOD TIME NOT FIGHTING (if they stopped fighting after Christmas maybe only about 0.5 to 4 million people died and WW2 might've never happened
@@ZTE I just imagine both sides looking down all of his dead. If I were on their shoes, I would've asked myself, why? What was the purpose for all this men to die? The saddest thing is it was meaningless. All of that death and violence was totally unnecessary and men died because some country leaders could not talk things out. World war 1 could have been avoided or at least reduced to 1914, if the Christmas truce had reached all trenches, it's sad oficials and generals could not see that they were killing fellow humans, men and women alike. They were not demons, as some would say. And this men in December 25, 1914, realized that the ones in the other trench were not so different after all.
The way people viewed war back then was very different from ours. They knew that's what they're supposed to do and that the guy on the other side understands that as well
Nope. In fact, the Soldiers on both sides had to switch Fronts with other Soldiers, because they refused to kill their Friends in the Other Trench across No-Mans Land.
This is just so wholesome. And the fact that they had to send the troops to different fronts after this cause they didn’t want to fight is just even more wholesome.
Things happen, it is hard to shoot an enemy if you know they are human, that's why soldiers "dehumanize" the enemy. That's why the generals didn't want a truce.
@@OperatorFritz I mean.. every country in the world calls it football, but in theirs own language of course. Portuguese: Futebol Spanish: Fútbol German: Fußball And so on..

this video make us me feel in are happy because in the darkest of ww2 there is some light still shining and it makes us remember that not all people are bad its just how they are controlled or feel about others this is a truce to remember in any time of darkness
@@0witw047 I agree with your second statement. However, almost every modern day propaganda campaign is hate-inducing. I don't know about what is going on in frontlines, but in the internet between people... Well, lots of hate.

The Christmas Truce of 1914 is the true meaning of humanity.
Quite right mate. Quite right.
+ Gallipoli campaign...
