I'm so glad you made this video documenting a demonstration of your versatility. Many years ago, I heard you do something similar in person, and it absolutely floored me. (I still find it impressive as hell!)
Great great demo Andy I love my Super Jet bottom end I can really round out my sound and sound Big .. The altissimo is the Candy store great with the Super Jet. What I like the Reed friendly 2 to 2.5
I actually think your sound is even more interesting on the Super Jet, which is not what I expected. But then again, I’m a rock, pop, funk kind of guy.
5:42 Sanborn's tune Butterfat from Taking Off. That was the first Sanborn tune my teacher in high school went through with me. Ahh memories... also heard a little Carly's song in there too.
Wow!! That was fantastic Sir... is the 7 and 9 similar in terms of tip opening? So curious of hearing this in person up close to hear all those beautiful Subtle frequencies that only the naked ear can experience. Hopefully someday... Huge fan for as long as I remember:)
So Danny, I experience them as similar. Jody, knowing that I play a DV 7* sent me 8s and 9s on the SuperJet, and I chose one of the 9s simply because it felt best to me. The DV 7* has more stylistic width, but the SuperJet absolutely kills on the pop/Sanborn thing etc. Thanks for the great thoughts, btw!
As an Alto Sax player, I like your sound on the super jet as well as David Sanborn, Nelson Rangell and Paul Taylor smooth jazz sound playing in the altissimo range. I've decided to purchase the JodyJazz super jet for my Alto and Tenor saxes.
I totally dig the way you show versatility on the SuperJet with such body to the tone and quote the intro to Butterfat as that is one of my favorite Sanborn albums I have transcribed. Dave is my favorite so I gravitate to that much more. The DV sounds great too.
Andy how do you go from a DV 7 size to a Super Jet 9 size ... man if I tried that I would pass out >>> ??? great great Demo >>> definitely the Super JET has a bigger sound
Honestly it's just about the individual mouthpiece responding to the way I do things. I'm more sensitive to that than to tip opening. Jody sent me 8s and 9s to try and i loved one within that bundle
Because of the smaller chamber of the SuperJet - it is not difficult to ply in the larger tip openings but neither is the DV - if you play more than 8-10 hours a week and supply enough air, you should be able to play any tip opening in JodyJazz mouthpieces because they are free blowing. It doesn't mean you need the largest tip opening.
love your plying Andy - would you mind sharing how you get that kind of 'split tone' in the 'normal' register (not altissimo) at 6:00 - thanks in advance
Hey Brendan, thank you! It's really only available on certain pitches (at least in my world), G# and A 2nd octave are prime territory. Basically it's Sanborn derived, hyper open throat, air directed a bit towards the top of the mouthpiece as opposed to straight through it. Also definitely equipment dependent, doubt I could make it happen successfully on anything but a metal mouthpiece. Hope that helps! Cheers, Andy
It's not really about comparing number to number. Jody sent me some 8s and 9s to try, and this 9 felt like the best and must natural companion to my DV7. Thank you for watching!
@@KrisVComm Kris, I actually tried it with David when we hung out a few years ago. Cool, but prefer the SuperJet. DS also had a prototype from Dukoff that I absolutely loved, but I don't think it ever got made...
@@andysnitzer1030 About 25 years ago I bought a Dukoff D8 for my soprano. I never liked it. Maybe it was just me? On my alto I have the Ishimori Woodstone "Groove" and it is a beast as well. I got the Drake Pete Christlieb for my tenor and I am still working on adapting to it.
Tim, that's a Mark VI, serial # 236xxx. I can't really comment on a 5, I just know that historically the 7/8 thing works for me, across all the different mouthpiece I've used in my career.
@@andysnitzer8605 Awesome. I have the DV that I just recently got and from the second note , I knew it was mine and for me, But I will hope to buy the Super Jet
@@vincentgaglio5106 Vincent if you do try the SuperJet, I recommend trying the 7 and the 8 - because of the small chamber sometimes the larger tip is more appropriate.

Good ears! Two classic Sanborn tunes!
A++++ great demo Andy and I Love my Super Jet 7 .. With 2.5 Superial Reeds
Is that a replacement neck you are using?
What a great comparison!
Thank you Daniel!

Harold I find it more to my liking on Alto, but irrespective of taste, a well made and super playable mouthpiece for sure!
Great saxophonist on both mouthpieces 👍🎷
Thank you!!🙏

Thank you Roberto. Dave had such a massive influence on so many of us.
super Jet gives a full sound especially on the bottom end and altissimo definitely a bigger sound.
At first I was like "wow this is nice calm song" Then mr. fast fingers comes out

Why such a huge Tip opening difference? Is the does the super jet choke easily?

Great sound !! Which reed do you use
Hey Eugen, I use the humble Rico orange box. I don't get too crazy about gear, just stick with what works for me, and practice practice practice! 😅
@@andysnitzer1030 thank you Andy !
I love your style !!
Wow great comparison. Can i ask you which reeds you have used on the DV7 and the SuperJet9?
Hey Tobias, On the DV I use Daddario (Rico) orange box size 3, on the Super Jet size 2.5
0:47 1:55 2:27 4:32 5:40 6:15
A little Paul Butterfield Sanborn thang there with the Super Jet. Great player!
such a great mouthpiece for that vibe!
