Andy, forgive me but I love your music. Came across your work late 2020. I've always loved Dave Koz, original Chicago horns, and so impressed with your arrangements. Keep up the great work, I'll be listening.
Hey there, I am a drummer and I don't play sax but just wanted to know what your inspirations are in terms of sound. Since it sounds to me that Sanborn seems to be a huge influence, but maybe I'm wrong. Greetings from Germany.
Hello Andy, I'm a Juliano from Brazil, I really admire your work, I have a question, how do you get that growl sound at the beginning of the song, in medium pitch notes, this is very characteristic of your sound, is there a video where you explain it? Can you give any tips on this, it doesn't seem like a common growl to me, sorry if I said it wrong because here in Brazil we have other names for this effect.
Hi Juliano, so this is the Sanborn split note kind of thing. It works on certain pitches, certainly not all. It's achieved by opening your throat and changing the angle of the mouthpiece at the same time. Hard to teach without being in the same room, but that's what it's about 👍
Hey Andy, nice tune man! I love how you get the G in the opening part of of the melody to split just a little bit. I'm having trouble replicating that, what's your approach if you don't mind giving away secrets? Thanks for all the stuff you post, being loving all the interviews!
Bruce sorry I missed this. So it's all about air delivery, throat position, and mouthpiece angle. It's not growl or anything effected internally. Correct air, open throat, and a "Sanborn" style approach to horn position/mouthpiece angle are the unlock keys here. Definitely also function of equipment (easier on some mouthpieces that others), but ultimately down to those three items. Hope this helps!
Hey Andy, Thanks for that matey, I'll work on it! You do that split note thing in that part of the horn better than anyone else. great example of taking someone else's innovation and personalizing it, Love it! Hope things are picking up after the pandemic, things here (Sydney, Australia) are gradually starting to feel a bit more normal. Cheers, Bruce
It's a Consoli, long out of business but a really great concept based on cloth with a small piece of plastic mounted on the inside. The plastic sits on the back of the reed, applies pressure when tightened. I think users had issues with the cloth wearing out/expanding over time, affecting the seal, but that hasn't happened to me. Free blowing, great ligature.
Those Snitzer Pauses are great

Andy, what ligature are you using on this DV mouthpiece?
