A character like Aragorn here is so rare to see anymore. Viggo played him to perfection. He’s brave and strong yet gentle and caring, noble and kingly yet very humble, fierce to the enemies, loving to his kins and friends, very wise yet he never condescends others. A King, a warrior, a dear friend and companion. And he played it without being cringy, not a bit. It’s such a perfect character.

And whenever King Aragorn went toward The Shire, he never entered but stood with his horse on the Brandywine Bridge to meet with whomever wanted to see him. But NEVER actually crossed. This was an example to all big people in the kingdom so that the hobbits would never again be exploited by ones like Saruman and Wormtongue.

King Elessar lived to 210. He reigned for 122 years as King. His reign was prosperous for all the people of his kingdom. They rebuilt and reclaimed much of the territory of Gondor and Arnor, and saw the reestablishment of the cooperation of Men, Dwarves, and Elves. He was buried next to Pippin and Merry who had died 58 years earlier. He was succeeded by his son, Eldarion. Arwen, heartbroken by his death, passed away soon after in Lothlorien.

Look at Elrond's face, what a great actor Hugo Weaving is. He read the books... He knows Arwen is realizing her dream of being married to Aragorn, but he knows also that he is losing her, forever, bc the Elves go to Valinor and the mortals go "Beyond the Circles of this World", which may be Tolkien's way of saying the Biblical afterlife, ie, heaven or hell. And Arwen becomes mortal when she loses her husband to old age: Remember the Elves are immortal, but there are two ways they can die, they can be killed, and they will die of broken hearts and grief, and one way of heartbreak is unrequited love, or grief for separation from a beloved... So Poor Elrond had 2 choices: To watch his daughter waste away in grief if she went with him to Valinor, or to know that she would die of grief once Aragorn finally passed away, despite him being a Dunadan and living 3 times as long a normal Man. (210 years, 122 of which was as King of the West. There was a scene in "The two towers" where this is explained... Great acting by Hugo Weaving, and Liv Tyler both..Arwen is 3000 years old and she knows her time is will end, but she faces it bravely, and Elrond who is more than 6500 years old, (born first age in a settlement at the mouth of the river Sirion, near the west shores of Beleriand... which was sunk and lost forever in the War of Wrath at the end of the First Age.. and among the survivors of Gondolin, and Doriath, when the final kinslaying took place and the settlement was destroyed, and Elrond and his brother Elros were taken and fostered by Maedros son of Feanor... and Elrond went on to survive not only the First Age, of which only 50 or so years remained, but also the 3,434 years of the Second age and the 3,021 years of the Third Age before he took ship into the West forever... and Galadriel went with him, leaving Celeborn as "the last living memory of the Elder Days (the First Age) in Middle Earth" ..

Aragorn's most powerful line ever imo. This is no longer Aragorn the Ranger, but Aragorn II Elessar. By taking Elendil's oath, he has now come to truly embrace who he really is. Now this to me is an exceptionally powerful line especially knowing that among Elendil's descendants, Aragorn was the one who was most like him. They're also the greatest among the kings of Men
And also it was like a huge, long awaited, posthumous middle finger from Elendil to a now puny Sauron

I think Tolkien would be astonished at how his books and the movies Peter Jackson made from them have touched people around the world...because of his vision of goodness, sacrifice and selflessness, kindness and love, courage and honor, and perseverance in the service what is right and good--all those "outmoded" things have come back into fashion for tens of millions because of him. He has moved hearts and minds in his own way toward a vision that reflects the love and reverence he had for his God and his Savior. Make no mistake--the Lord of the Rings is at base a profoundly Christian story..

That is some amazing acting from Hugo Weaving. How he manages to smile and clap while conveying the deep sadness in Elrond's eyes, simultaneously sad that his daughter will become mortal and die, and happy that she is with the man she loves, and will live a shorter life of more intense joy. A masterclass in bittersweet.

Not even just joy... more, she'll be fulfilled and satisfied, even with her sadness at the very end, when she goes to die alone in the desolate hollows where Lothlorien once stood. That as painful as this parting is, Elrond's wise enough to know it would be more painful to see her waste away slowly and lifelessly in the Undying Lands with him, and that his greatest act of love is to let her go. AND HE DOES THAT ALL WITH A FEW SECONDS OF BACKGROUND ACTING! Hugo Weaving's so good.

I think part of what makes the line "My friends, you bow to no one!" so powerful is the amount of sincere emotion Aragorn says it with. He knew better than most what the four of them had endured, willingly. Their sacrifice, bravery and strength of spirit were unmatched by anyone else that was a part of the war of the ring, and Aragorn knew it. Viggo delivered it perfectly, as he did every little thing as Aragorn in the entire trilogy.

Seriously, as far as the movie scripts go, as i have forgotten practically most of the book, all 4 of the hobbits played pivotal roles in turning the tides in the favor of men. 1. Frodo carried the ring. 2. Sam made it possible for Frodo to carry the ring. 3. Pippin's curiosity in delving into the black stones exposed Sauron's plans to Gandalf, which compelled him to move quickly to Gondor to prepare for war. Also, Pinpin lighting the beacon of SOS. 4. Pipin and Merry practically were responsible for Saruman's elimination from the grand equation by getting the Tree worgs (or whatever their name is) to wage war against him. Merry's backstabbing of the king of the ring wraiths allowed Eowyn to defeat him. These hobbits achieved incredible feats!!

It's amazing what they did to Aragorn's appearance with must minor changes. Up until nearly the end, he looked like someone who lived outdoors - stringy, oily hair & a patchy beard. He looked a little better at the Battle of the Black Gate, with his hair pulled back and beard cleaned up some. Here, though, at his coronation, he has a plump, full beard & clean, shoulder-length combed-out hair that looks both noble and kingly. This is Aragorn’s crowning, this is his day, however when Eomer bows to him at 2:02 Aragorn bows back in return.
This is not common for a king, and it perfectly encompasses Aragorn’s humility in a single moment, Aragorn treats his men as equals and not as if they are beneath him, he knows he was not only one in the war to put his life on the line and be willing to sacrifice all for the small chance of victory.
He knows that really, he is no better than his brothers, he is king because of his blood and therefor it is his duty to set his kingdom to rights, but there is no ego in his conduct, only a quiet strength that men have only to look upon his face to know that this is their king, and they are glad of it.

Then, when he sees Arwen and kisses her, the way he closes his eyes with utter relief throws the entire thing into sharp contrast. You can almost hear him saying "I'm home. I've got you at last." It really showcases the honor, generosity and self-sacrifice at the core of Aragorn's character. He doesn't care about the crown or the kingdom they are giving him, but Arwen's love is everything. Lord Elrond once said that he will not allow Aragorn to marry Arwen until he is at the very least the King of the combined kingdom of Gondor and Arnor, fully knowing that Sauron was gaining power in the North and seeing firsthand how the Ring has corrupted Aragon's line in the past. And then Aragorn's expression where he has finally been coronated as King, but knowing just what he needed to sacrifice leaves him feeling torn, only to be greeted by Arwen. It's more about the fact he realized she has given up her immortality for him.

I think you forgot that this is a fantasy inspired by the middle ages? Lmfao. Queens are definitely not equal to their kings, either in our own history or this fictional one. That's just a fact lmfao, if you read the appendices of Return of the King you see that Arwen calls him "dear lord" and "my king" and "great king of numenor" even when they're alone. And even when he's on his deathbed. The king stands above everyone of course, and all toil in service to him. And he protects the realm and delivers peace and healing. So, as the previous commenter stated, his look of distress is because he knows he's basically infecting her with death on the spot. By taking her as his wife. She won't go to valinor now and her spirit wont be immortal anymore. So he feels a bit conflicted because he wants her more than anything. But by taking her he's eventually killing her. The closest they come to being equals here is him atleast taccepting her decision and giving in to what they both want. accepting that she also wants this more than anything.

      I think you are correct.
And they parted on awkward terms. He set her free from her commitment when they were last together. Now, she is perhaps not sure that she DOES still hold that place in his heart. It isn't a king/queen moment, I don't think. It is a private moment between them and the crowd is forgotten. Questions in eyes, she finally smiles and he is overjoyed. Great kiss 😏 and more silent questions and answers. Perfect.

2:30 God, the casting was SO good. Hugo Weaving and Liv Tyler as father and daughter. That little bit of emotion on Elrond as he sees his daughter go is just such a nice detail.

4:15 such a powerful scene where hobbits, the smallest of middle-earths people stood taller than even the kings of men.
