And for people not on contracts. I use consumer cellular and I have to buy my phones outright. I've been using OnePlus phones for a few years and even got a few of my family members to try them out and we all love them. When I showed them that OnePlus phones like the 5t are being compared to flagships like the s8 and pixel 2 XL, it wasn't even a competition for us considering the $750+ price tag. My dad had his oneplus 1 for 2 years, my grandpa still has his 3t, and I still have my 2 and my 5t.
Fuck you TE Lawence. The only reason why i bought the 1+5T over the pixel 2XL was the 3.5mm jack. I don't wan't something else to charge, to break. Balls to it.
The Galaxy S8 is thinner than any iphone trash and still has it. Plus it has the highest water resistance rating of any device. Their excuse of it taking up too much space is pure horse shit. I am glad all of my devices (Galaxy S2 GT9100, Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Oneplus One, Nexus 6p, and my current device...Oneplus 3T) all have a headphone jack.
I'm a little late, it's damn near 2023, but I'm bummed LTT decided to say the specs were like any other high end phone. OP clocked the 835 higher than a lot of OEM's, like Samsung and Google. They gave the white model of the 5t 8gb of ram only, which is still a lot of ram going into 2023. Most high end phones in 2017 had 4-6 gb of ram. Apple's $1,500 phone in early 2023 only has 6gb.
Well i've got my OP5T for a couple of days now and i am very impressed with the facial unlock. It works 99,99% of the times i tried it. Even when i look at it from the side it unlocked incredibly fast. So can not really understand linus at that point ^^
well i tried it with pictures and videos of my face, and it didn't unlock the phone :D But my point was that it does unlock the phone perfectly fine and very very fast.
I never meant that a OnePlus phone was perfect. The OnePlus One didn't have every feature a phone could have at the time. The point of their phones was to get flagship specs at a reasonable price. And you do get an SD835 and even an 18:9 screen.
no, but in the past there was a BIG difference in price. Now... Just wait 2 months and you are getting hi-end phones from like LG or Samsung (which will be a bit more but still)
logirex I believe you can actually. Although it'll require removing the back which will void your warranty. I'd like to think this isn't something you'll have to worry about. I have owned numerous other oneplus devices and haven't even had the thought occur to me. Finally, I'd suggest watching Jerry Rig Everything on TH-cam, he'll more than likely have a teardown video in which he'll tell you if you can in fact change the battery. Peace 🤘
nicolai jensen agreed it's not like we are able to see the difference of an higher pixel density anyway. It only adds extra load for the cpu which will cost in battery life
Not only that, the investment on a hi-rez panel could be better used on a quality lower rez panel, and the waterproofing can just be downgraded to water resistance. Most people arent going to go swimming or take a shower with their phone. For me, its "can it work in the rain and doea the image not look like crap" and that is fine with me
The 5T does have some water resistance (although not IP rated), it will easily survive under rain and some splashes. DON'T SUBMERGE IT IN WATER THOUGH! Oh and higher resolution can be useful for VR stuff, but I don't see why OP would push that, unlike Samsung who have the Gear VR.
Well, water resistance can be a very handy feature and is n't actually that expensive to do but on the other hand i really don't think more resolution is required, 1080p AMOLED panel is amazing already and a higher resolution panel will make it more expensive, drain more battery and only gives you a very minor difference, barely visible if you aren't gonna use the phone with VR. I create tech based contents. If you are free please do give my channel a look.
OreoCupcakes Yeah their software practices are very shady lame excuses on project treble implementation. Using nougat firmware on Oreo. And not updating the UI (settings app) to meet the aosp layout which is a major selling point (aka close to stock Android) But the community is awesome you can always stick a custom rom in a op. At the end of the day almost everything oreo related works on oos oreo and pretty stable so the average joe won't notice it. very shady indeed
its actually faster than the iphone X....but less secured as they using the camera to identify and isnt as secured as a dedicated ir depth sensing sensor
Fitzberth Powell Channer he replied to my comment by saying it degraded over time which did happen to me after an update bit re-registering it sorted it out
I disagree about the slogan. "Never settle" doesn't mean it's gonna have every feature a phone can possibly have. It means it can compete head to head with phones thats are completely in a different price category like the note 8, pixel 2 xl, iPhone X etc, while still being affordable. And I think they've been successful seeing as a lot of people are actually comparing these phones and it's pretty close.
Came here to say the exact same. Had my 5T for a few days now and I'm still amazed by how quick it unlocks the phone - I usually don't even get to see the lock screen. I don't know why/how Linus could have had a bad thing to say about it.
krayvok1 Agreed, it can be annoyingly quick if I just want to check my notifications since it unlocks as soon as I look at my phone, and it has come in v handy during the winter. It works well in low light and even works in complete darkness if you turn the brightness all the way up
Haven't taken many videos but photos are really good. I agree that the video samples I've seen aren't great but I think on the plus side a lot of the issues could be fixed with updates as it just seems to be bad processing, it looks like the EIS is way too aggressive and makes the video look unnatural. On the plus side, audio is good and so are the colours, detail and autofocus (in my incredibly amateur opinion) so I feel like if you're not recording while moving around too much you'll get pretty decent videos out of it.
It's extremely reliable and I've yet to have any issues with mine, let alone see other reviews mention it being hit or miss. Mine works damn well every time and even now works better in low light with assist light.
WirableCrown1 ..The facial unlock is definitely faster...it's amazing how accurate and fast it is...this review is far different them my experience with this phone...The Never Settle slogan for me means never buying overpriced phones that have no headphone jack, that have no dash charging, that don't have great battery life but do cost twice as much as OP5T...this is my second One Plus phone and they work great, look great and I never missed that waterproofing gimmick...
Something to consider with the One Plus 5 phone, is that while using the pro mode you are able to take pictures under some very low light situations by adjusting the ISO settings and the shutter speed (ranging from a 1/8000th of a second to 30 seconds). I saw this in action firsthand when my brother was testing Pro mode out on his One Plus 5 phone. He took some pictures of our yard out in the rural area in the middle of the night with only one dim lamp post that was about 60 feet away. However, despite that, he was able to capture several photos of our yard that I would have thought impossible to take in the middle of the night. Please note that I have not taken many pictures with a camera that uses manual controls and do not know the specific ISO or aperture settings that would be used when taking photos of the moon or stars or other low light settings. The viewpoints I hold are based on recollections of some photos my brother took a couple months ago along with playing around with a DLSR camera a bit. I have yet to see any other phones that are able to take pictures at night without the aid of artificial lights. Or at least I was not able to find any examples online of Pixel 2 or iPhone pictures taken at night with no, or minimal artificial light; Which I find disappointing. I believe the main limiting factor that is preventing any other smartphone from being even better than they already are under low light settings is the inability for major adjustments of the time the aperture is open. Two example scenarios where this would be helpful are: First, being able to take a photo of the moon could be done by taking a photo with a super fast shutter speed such as 1/8000 to 1/1000 of a second. You could also choose other similar speed, the exact shutter speed would depend a lot on the exact brightness of the moon as well as what ISO setting your camera is set to. On that note, when taking a picture of the moon using a fast shutter speed you would also need to adjust the ISO to compensate for the low amount of light entering due to the shorter than normal shutter speed. The second scenario would be taking a photo of the stars. With any other phone, I am pretty sure that you would probably just get a black photo if you tried to capture a starry sky (except maybe if the stars were super vivid or bright). However, if you use a OnePlus 5 camera you would be able to adjust the shutter time to 30 seconds (You would also likely need to adjust the ISO to upwards of 1500 to 2000), which happens to be sufficient time to capture some amazing photos of the night sky. Just make sure to hold the camera using something like a tripod, or simply lay the camera face down on a solid dry object. The most amazing thing to me is that if I try taking the same picture with my Nexus 5X all I get is a mostly black picture with a few highlights. Plus, with my eyes, I was only able to see what you would expect with dim lighting from the stars. However, with the One Plus 5 my brother was able to take pictures with very nice detail along with being able to see the green color of the grass (I was not able to see the color of the grass with my own eyes. However, the camera was).
Shared Google Photos album: photos.app.goo.gl/bBtLyoUiwmt4EBuy1 Here are two pictures that were taken with my brothers One Plus 5 camera. The first was using the automatic settings, while the second photo is taken using the pro mode. Keep in mind that these pictures were taken at 10 PM at night during October.
I would say at least 80% of headphones out there right now use the 3.5mm jack. Its not obsolete and won't be for a very very long time due to its universality. It's like the 6mm jack, 6mm is ancient yet still widely used.
8uhbbhu81 Bluetooth is MORE universal tho more devices these days have Bluetooth than a headphone jack bc who wants a 100+ year old ANALOG port? Nobody.
Ashil It is. OnePlus CEO has already confirmed in an interview that they put their phones through vigorous testing to be sure that water from everyday activities won't harm the phone. Rain, dropping it in a toilet, splashing from a pool. It's just not certified.
What does he mean by "isn't as good as face id and iris scanner"? It is better. It unlocks the device, faster than both the devices he compared to. It can't be fooled by a picture, or a twin and it works quite well even in dim surroundings. iPhone's face id can fooled by a twin of yours. I am not making this up, my friend's iPhone X was unlocked by another friend who looks quite similar, not identical, similar. This review was kind of vague, doesn't look like linus did is his research properly.
Ethan Lau the incident with my friends, we tried doing that with the 5T, the phone did not unlock. May there was bug with Face ID at that moment. I am not saying 5T's face unlock is flawless, but for what it is used it works well. But Face ID is used for biometric identification of a person and is used for transactions and other security checks. It has to be flawless.
Hemlock true, however, unlike apple, face unlock is only used for convenient unlocking. All other security features like app locking and payment are either handled by pin or fingerprint. So it is secure enough.
Could you review the Honor 7x or Mi A1? Even though the OnePlus 5 is considered cheap among the realm of flagship phones, for some people it isn't in their budget.
He covers more exciting devices He showed in one video he gets more views on higher priced stuff. There’s tons of reviews of the 7x on TH-cam already, why do you need Linus to talk about what’s already been said?
Hey Linus! I really enjoy your content! Could you make like a budget roum tour? You show us all the hidden treasures in your studio and kinda give us a quick review with what equip your members are working! Could be cool i think xD Please dont mind my bad english :D
So I broke my oneplus 3t and took out an insurance claim and I am using that money to buy the oneplus 5t... I hope i'll be satisfied with the accidental upgrade. Also if you are a student you get 5% off the phone and 10% accessories, so if you are a college kid who wants something good, cheap, and beautiful you might want to consider this.
Honestly, my personal opinion is that the review did not do this phone justice. I've bought the 8 gig version, and coming from the G3 and months of research in smartphones I decided to go for this phone. The experience is amazing. Again, I was using an outdated phone but coming to this changed the way I use my phone. For starters, the battery life is amazing. The lowest SOT was 7 hours, and I do not use my phone sparingly. Another thing about the battery is the dash charge. I did not believe that this is possible. In about an hour, go from 0 to 100%, and in 30 minutes you get 60%. With that, I can comfortably go out with around 35-40% battery knowing I wont run out of juice. Secondly, the display. I was a bit sceptical going from the G3's quad hd display to "just 1080p". But man, there is no difference. If any, the color of the screen is beautiful, and it has different calibration modes for anyones liking. The backlight is uniform and there is no real color shift off axis. Now the software experience. It is phenomenal. I simply cant find any bad thing about it. I love the screen shortcuts while its off, the volume slider is one thing I loved on the iPhone and now its back, with more functions and I really find myself using it often. Otherwise, I'm a big fan of Nova Launcher, but I didn't even download it on this phone, the default launcher is great. For the camera, personally I find it great. I don't need a DSLR in a phone, and the cam is up to standards. The 16 mpx front camera is great for selfies, and the back cameras make really good pictures. Because of the dual cameras, there is a portrait mode, and it is amazing. It works really well and takes amazing pictures. The fingerprint reader is blazingly fast l, but my primary use is to pull down the notification panel. I dont need the fingerprint sensor because the face unlock works great. I was honestly impressed with the speed and precision of it, it works all of the time and the operation is seamless. And for the end, the phone operates seriously fast, I did not have any stutters whatsoever and the 8 gigs of RAM are plenty for multitasking. I think that there is no better choice in the market at this price point. Those are my 2 cents, and if someone is seriously considering this phone, I say go for it. You surely wont be disappointed.
Personally I like fingerprint readers on the back. Because I keep my phone in my front pocket with the screen facing my leg, I can unlock it while taking it out of my pocket.
I literally got my 5T last night, upgrading from and iPhone 6S. I think your review is spot on, it's a compromise but a pretty good one. My priorities were (everyone is different): cheap unlocked phone with a headphone jack. The 5T had both of these going for it. I have the same concern as you about the software support, Android is notorious for it's lack of software updates and I hope OnePlus steps up and commits to at least 2y of updates. Fingers crossed. Overall the battery life is good, the camera is not as great as my brothers pixel 2 but still ok, the screen is great and dash charging is definitely more useful than wireless (although less flashy).
Joseph Harvey I agree. Phones are so ubiquitous that prices should be much lower than this... But for now "cheap" means "half the price of an iPhone X". :-)
Super Fleymez was using Samsung flagships untill the s6 and switched to oneplus the consistent fluidity of the OS doesn't make me wanna upgrade from the 3t 🙂
Super Fleymez I don't gonna follow the Galaxy series anymore, as Samsung screwed up stock Android features and added in their own stuff (which I hardly ever use) which turned me more to stock Android already back on the S5, also, as you've already guessed, pricing is also a point (I don't see why I should spend 300 to 400 more for basically the same specs).
It does but having two versions makes it quicker to switch between them. I use it for my personal and business account far less hassle than having to navigate to the profile screen and switching.
Spartan8907 well the 5t is that price because it trades off half of the stuff that makes other phones unique. That doesn't make the phone bad though, because it brings the Essential features you need in a phone. Maybe this should have been called the essential phone 🤣😂
I feel like the fact that it also comes in white now is the most important factor for me. I wasn't think of getting one, now I definitely will. Even if I don't get it in white, it's important that the option exists.
Agree about everything said here! However, the face unlock is fast to a fault, so much so that I disabled the auto unlock feature so that I could at least see notifications instead of the Homescreen every time I touch the phone. You made it sound like it wasn't working or working slowly. Whereas for me you don't even have to hold it straight to your face, as long as your face is in the frame, and one of your eyes open, it'll unlock immediately. Also Oreo for the 3/3T ist released a month ago, for 5 it was released but stopped temporarily due to a bug. And for the 5T there is an open beta build since a week.
What are you saying... The OnePlus 5T is considered the phone with the fastest face unlock. You didnt mention dash charging and that it IS water resistant but just not certified. Bad review
The one plus 5t has some basic waterproofing features that they added but it hasn't been fully waterproofed rubber o ring around the usb c port and mesh under the speaker grill.
Don't agree with the support comment. First the company is constantly adding new functionalities to the OS all the time and both 3 and 3T are already on Android 5 and the 5 and 5T are already starting on the beta program so an early release is expected. Otherwise good review
Thanks found u again after a channel name conflict lol bought my stormtrooper suit walked into spoons ordered a pint with a straw and pulled out the white 5T never even got a second look 👍
How do they settle on software, explain that further?! because you just said it settles but with barely any expaination and with giving half its strong points... I like their software over any others smartphones software, and i guess im really not the only one :P Your review was a little lacking, not featuring things that already been there for a while now like dashcharge... ok well. but the Face Unlock that is Faster but not as secure the iPhoneX face id is only considered "just not as good as the iphoneX"... Like the First "Kamera only" face unlock on an android smartphone that works so well it fuctions reliable in any lighting condition, from any angle, recognizes if your eyes are open and cant be fooled by a picture isnt amazing... For that this review took so long and the fact your one of the biggest techreviewers this review was incredibly uninforming and simply not good.
Mr.Magnificent there software is buggy as hell and their software updates are half baked and rarely fix anything speaking for experience im a op3 user and I mean the op5 shiped with oxygen os 4.5 it's on 4.5.14 now 😂 like 14 updates which keep adding more and more problems....
Vishal menon i have to disagree... No obvious buggs on oneplus 5t and also no reports form 3 oneplus3 users i personally know. These updates are primarily the monthly google security patches and its good oneplus also brings them monthly to its devices. Also specify those bugs please
Mr.Magnificent join the one plus forum and you will find out all about the issues bruh. But I will still name a few for you 1) battery drain baking the main one which remains same or gets worse with each one of their so called "updates" 2) proximity sensor not turning of the screen when making calls 3) android system system standby acting up and draining the battery And come on man for a phone to go from 4.5 when it released to 4.5.14 should have been enough of a waking call for you to realise that one plus software updates are complete garbage. All these updates happened with 1 to 2 months of the phones release
Mr.Magnificent don't get me wrong a handful of users may not experience these issues but a strong majority do and I would like to know if you are joking or whether you're serious about the monthly security patch updates comment as everyone and I mean everyone knows that one plus never gives the security updates every month there is almost always a 4 to 5 month gap...
Vishal menon correct me if im mistaken, but those issues came with the switch to oreo, which is huge update, so no suprise, and most of them already got fixed by the patch after the big update. Nougat before ran perfectly stable, and it will take a little before oreo runns stable as well Also oneplus pushes software updates more frequently now than before.
TechShmoo Yeah, you're right but I find far more convenient to press an app icon than to go fiddling in my settings. It's not a real novelty but really more of an improvement for convenience sake
Linus, you prefer a front mounted fingerprint sensor? Would you not say rear mounted ones such as those found on the pixel 2 and pixel are more ergonomic?
Great video and best attitude. Following for a while now, you get a sponsor for almost each of your videos then why don't you do a giveaway. Its been ages. And personally I'm in need of one mobile. But can't afford one. Just found you carry at least 5 phones on your trip. That's awesome!!
Heads up for any students! you can get the 5T for 450$ using their discounts! If this is not an amazing deal then i don't know what is. Both me and my girlfriend got the phone and love it.
The 'caucasian' thing is largely a hoax based on certain genetic similarities or ancient regional neighbourhood that don't translate into the actual phenotypes, racial, ethnic or cultural closeness of the groups it tries to lump in anyways. Like in what world are Arabs, Berbers, etc to be considered 'White' in the same way Europeans are? Stop using the term Caucasian. You're making a joke about 'White' referring to Europeans. Which are phenotypically, regionally an actual race, bunch of ethnicities. You might as well use the term 'semetic' or 'indo-European'. It does not describe any currently existent ethnic, culturally homogeneous group. 'White', as in referring to the peoples of Europe does. It get that you're parodizing the eternal demonization, stereotyping of White people, Europeans as 'racist' for using generalized terms for groups of people. But please...
Been using a black 5T 8GB/ 128GB for 2 months now. Have an oem carbon fiber case on it and I love this thing. I use the dual SIM feature for how I have my mobile plans set up. No I'm not European or Asian. I live in USA. I love the features of this for the price. Sure the "never settle" is a misnomer now but I can settle with what it has. Plus, it's the most powerful Android phone until results are compared to Razer Phone.
Actually, my wife's OP3 is already on 8.0. OP5 has 8.0 rolling out, and for the 5T it's in open beta. This is another case of shooting beforehand and releasing later on TH-cam probably :-) other then that, nice review.
Honestly, the Pixel 1 was at the top of my leaderboard for my potential next phone when that first hit the scene, but now with damn near everyone, including Google dropping their headphone jack, this is probably my top pick, and it doesn't feel like settling. No headphone jack is just a deal breaker for me tbh, this whole trend is absolutely ridiculous as far as I'm concerned, and I hope we look back on it as some momentary fad set by the ever needlessly-and-assbackwardsly mold breaking Apple.
Linus has to be one of the only few i know that prefer a front fingerprint scanner, i just don't see the convenience with it at the front. Being on the back makes it so much easier to reach (especially for gesture control) and a more seamless unlocking experience when pulling your phone from your pocket.
Ik your an audiophile and I like to consider myself the same however after trying the Jaybird X3s I've taken them over any wired earbud since. There's a place for the superior sound quality of a wire (My Sennheiser HD 800s for example) but anywhere else I just don't see it offsetting the convenience and perfectly fine audio quality of Bluetooth earbuds. Also, I just bought a set of Sony WH1000XM2s and they are the best pair of closed back portable headphones I've ever heard, not to mention their class leading noise cancelling capabilities, and this honestly has me questioning why you choose to use a pair of wired headphones when your not just listening but also doing another activity.
im pretty sure that his Sennheiser IE80 sounds way, WAY better then the jaybird x3 (wich I own), i agree tough that the x3 sounds really nice with the right settings.
tbh, at this point, my next phone's probably going to be an OP again, not because of the price/performance, but because of things like the notification switch, the intuitive OS, and ability to root and change roms without voiding warranty. Well unless they remove the headphone jack , at that point i guess i'll just search for something else...
MΞARE yes, there would've been a way in the old days but nowadays, if you say anything about the color white being better than the black color, people would literally cut you off before you say "on the phone" and immediately assume you are a white supremacist. Believe me, don't make any jokes about whites and blacks
The One ok then but why is the white more expensive? And also with the essential phone the white is more expensive. It may sound stupid. More value ???
My 3T and my 5T both got dropped in water for about 3 seconds accidentally, and after blow-drying both at medium heat for about 20 minutes the speakers started working perfectly again. Definitely don't drop them in water but as long as you quickly try to fix them you will be fine.
With the multiple app thing, you can do that with an easy app called app cloner it's very useful and nice! (The app icon looks like a DNA strand with a blue background) I use it all the time. Yes it's not a built in feature in stock Android but you can still do it!
It seems like you have forgotten to talk about dash charging which is a huge feature on this phone. Seriously, OnePlus promises that you can get full day of use of battery under 30 minutes of charging and did not disappoint the users, I thought that's worth mentioning. And also just my opinion, the facial recognition of the 5T is wayyyy better than the iris scanner, and even faster than the FaceID, but it's just not as secure and therefore it can't be used to make any payments and stuffs related. Anyway, great review Linus, always enjoyed your videos a lot. :)
If the Oneplus 6 looks like an IPX. Then Oneplus is officially a copy in my book. The original looked like a v10/G4, Oneplus 3 looked like an htc, and Oneplus 5 looks like a IP7.
Well I mean, its a phone. Its gonna be a flat rectangle with buttons on it no matter what. The price to quality ratio matters more as long as we don't get really stupid design choices (e.g. reversed button placement on Samsung phones or not having a headphone jack like many phones out there), and the 5T is pretty good in that regard, with the smallest price tag of a Snapdragon 835 and 6 GB RAM phone out there.
GyroCannon OnePlus very clearly took industrial design cues from other devices. Insinuating that OnePlus doesn’t copy just because phones are flat with rounded corners and a glass panel is ignorant. That’s like saying a Lamborghini is the same thing as a Kia because they both have 4 wheels, car seats, and a windshield.
I have a OnePlus 3T :D So cool to see a smaller company that have made MANY flagships getting sometime in a spotlight also 'Never Settle' is their motto because it means that they will not settle until they sort out any issues you may have with your device, I guess they pride themselves in customer support? and to be honest their customer support is amazing. I rooted my phone and stupidly I turned my phone off whilst it was flashing SuperSU which some how ended up frying my motherboard so I contacted OnePlus about it and they offered a completely FREE including shipping for FREE repair.
In regards to the support of the OS, the older devices are supported by a lot of custom ROMs. for example, lineage which is very similar to stock android with a few cool things very well plopped on top
My OnePlus 3t has had Oreo for months now. I have had the phone since it was new, which hasn't really been that long and the 5t seems to be only a moderate improvement. I personally really like the 3t and Oxygen OS, but I have been running the Google Now Launcher for most of the time I have been using the phone as I much prefer to have it as close to stock as possible after using the Nexus series for a couple of years prior.
My oneplus 3T is still going strong and it's a hell of an android competitor here in the UK as Samsung swap out the Qualcomm chips for arm and Mali combo to level out prices after the EU import tax. That aside, you didn't brush over the fact the battery is bigger and the charging is quicker. For a phone with a premium build, decent dual cameras, quick and trim OS with no baggage, great battery, fingerprint sensor AND the flagship snapdragon CPU it's a complete bargain.
Was going to get one of these until I found out the headphone jack voltage has been reduced to 0.44V from the original OnePlus 5’s 0.96V. An otherwise good phone ruined by crappy quiet headphone output?! So now I’m temporarily getting a HTC One M9 until I can afford a Razer Phone which is what I really want (both around 1V headphone jack output and both have the advantage over OnePlus of decent built in speakers anyway)
A year ago I was mad about the headphone jack problem, but today is different. I own 2 sets of headphones and they are both bluetooth(one has an aux output still). I own the first gen Pixel XL and I will be happy with this phone for the next 5 years.
I bought a dbrands skin once. i put it on my moto x pure. Same day when I got out of my car the smooth vinyl caused it to slide out of my pocket whilst getting out of my car. I'm not saying don't buy one. But my experience wasn't very good lol. Great video though
I would really like to see a focus on reviewing phone's front-facing cameras, a good front facing camera is a hugely underrated feature as for most people this is actually the main camera
At least the one thing OnePlus didn't settle for is the 3.5mm jack, which remains on the phone. Good move on their part as USB-C dongles included by manufacturers sometimes don't include the locking pins in the plug, leading to the dongle eventually wigging out due to loosening over time (basically, there's a small click when you plug something into a USB-C port and some USB-C dongles don't have those pins so they just slide in)
Seems like the perfect phone for someone who's happy to drop a decent chunk of cash, but not go overboard and pay for features they'd rarely use.
I find being a proud owner of the OP5T that I started using all of the features by the start of the second week. but yes it was expensive.
Don’t be jealous that you don’t have Animoji, broskie. The best feature. Worth $1000 alone.
One plus 5 is equal to the number 6.
I love my 5t
Dash charge is an absolute life changer and feel that it needs to be mentioned.
Headphone jack FTW!
Deon Spates What is actually FTW?
Johann that's no better than losing it. Nobody want to use adaptors or buy new headphones.
Mainak Roy Chowdhury stay in 2015 then
Fuck you TE Lawence.
Listening to music directly from your smartphone while you're sitting at your computer? Where's your Schiit, Linus?!
Linus, get your Schiit together.
MahsumPlays it's not secure like apples tho
well i tried it with pictures and videos of my face, and it didn't unlock the phone :D But my point was that it does unlock the phone perfectly fine and very very fast.
ChloeWade yh but he made it sound like it wasnt good at recognising your face
Never settle tho really doesn't fit like it used to tho...
Now... Just wait 2 months and you are getting hi-end phones from like LG or Samsung (which will be a bit more but still)
How do you speaking englandos men?
LG G6 is actually cheaper than OnePlus 5T
and i had one, was the biggest regret of my life! im getting a 5t
0:43
1+5T=6T, it sounds like sixty [Six+T]
oh i thaught it was 51 lol
quick mafs
Canadian maths
Sixty nine
I was checking comment box for only this.
I've had the black 5T for two days now and it's the best phone I have ever owned 🤘
logirex I believe you can actually. Peace 🤘
Same here using it from last month.
logirex a lot of phones technaicly have replaceable batteries check here: www.ifixit.com/Guide
I've had mine pretty much since launch and it's amazing
Note 8....? Galaxy....? Nvm, Enjoy your new phone
I hate that tech reviewers keep calling for water proofing and higher resolution, because that'd only make the next oneplus more expensive...
nicolai jensen agreed it's not like we are able to see the difference of an higher pixel density anyway.
Robert Peters you seem to be able to see the difference if it’s an iphone that is being compared

Wtf we have oreo on our 3/3t for months now and yeah 5t has a pretty stable oreo open beta build
It's fake Oreo btw. The skin is Oreo like, but the features are using Nougat firmware. So's OP is using some hacks to get Oreo functions to work out.
Its basically how custom rom devs are patching old firmware of nougat to work on alpha oreo builds. Better use custom roms, atleast you have privacy..
My OnePlus 3T is running Android 8.0.0, OxygenOS 5.0.1, and the December 1st Android security patch level.
Aishwarya Gaidhane Yeah should have been done for stability sake and getting a working build ASAP fast oreo = profit 😏
odd you are the first person i have seen complaining about the face unlock
Yea right. The way they demoed it, it looked super slow. While it should be super fast
its actually faster than the iphone X....but less secured as they using the camera to identify and isnt as secured as a dedicated ir depth sensing sensor
Exactly, I heard is better then the iPhone x
Yeah, Unbox Therapy thought that it was the one of the fastest one's he'd seen.
I cant agree with you on the face unlock. My 5T face unlock works lightning fast and at times when I don't even want it to.
It works well in low light and even works in complete darkness if you turn the brightness all the way up
Could you guys comment on the camera ? I've seen a bunch of reviews regarding the video recording and they look really bad, okay at best.
Oh also I've heard that shots and videos improve significantly with Google's camera app but haven't had time to install and try it yet
After seeing some speed test videos, I thought the onePlus 5t's facial unlock was faster than apple's.
It’s faster than the iPhone X’s when it works. It’s just not nearly as reliable or secure.
It's extremely reliable and I've yet to have any issues with mine, let alone see other reviews mention it being hit or miss. Mine works damn well every time and even now works better in low light with assist light.
Its les safe. Instemde of 30000 it uses 100 points for recognishon.
So you want front facing speakers and a front fingerprint reader? Make up your mind.
Ikr
Doctor Jew Some phones have both so it is very possible
It's possible.
Look at the HTC M9 plus.
Hassaan Zafar Look at that bezels
but can it run crysis
After these recent CPU adjustments.. nothing will
NO IT WON'T DAMNIT!
The patch is out. There's no performance drop.
it can barely run minesweeper dammit
Rishi Ghia ffs it can barely run pong
Shared Google Photos album: photos.app.goo.gl/bBtLyoUiwmt4EBuy1
Here are two pictures that were taken with my brothers One Plus 5 camera. The first was using the automatic settings, while the second photo is taken using the pro mode. Keep in mind that these pictures were taken at 10 PM at night during October.
OMG YAY!!!! Headphone Jack!!!!!!
8uhbbhu81 headphone jack is obsolete
Meldrick Dizon aptX competes and is more convenient
Meldrick Dizon I wish apple would support it tho
I would say at least 80% of headphones out there right now use the 3.5mm jack. Its not obsolete and won't be for a very very long time due to its universality. It's like the 6mm jack, 6mm is ancient yet still widely used.
8uhbbhu81 Bluetooth is MORE universal tho more devices these days have Bluetooth than a headphone jack bc who wants a 100+ year old ANALOG port? Nobody.
I think that Linus should have mentioned that the OnePlus 5T is quite water resistant. Just not certified.
Harish Mukkapati no it isnt
Ashil It is. OnePlus CEO has already confirmed in an interview that they put their phones through vigorous testing to be sure that water from everyday activities won't harm the phone. Rain, dropping it in a toilet, splashing from a pool. It's just not certified.
CalamityBaird well splashes wont harm the phone.but dipping it in water makes the camera foggy
Yeah, that part bugged me. He said it wasn't as good but completely failed to mention why.
I Z exactly. May it was someone else who wrote it.
You think the 5T will be able to tell the difference between identical twins?
Ethan Lau the incident with my friends, we tried doing that with the 5T, the phone did not unlock. May there was bug with Face ID at that moment. I am not saying 5T's face unlock is flawless, but for what it is used it works well.
But Face ID is used for biometric identification of a person and is used for transactions and other security checks. It has to be flawless.
You did hear him say "from my anecdotal experience", right?
You're the only who didn't praise the face unlock of oneplus 5t
Connect your PC without an adapter - check out my channel for the trick.
eStar TV I have no idea what this video was saying. Face unlock is stupid fast in well lit and even darker rooms. Source: Have the 5t.
CodyMetal yeah, even with the older OnePlus 5 it is extremely fast and accurate.
It is actually better than iphone
Hemlock true, however, unlike apple, face unlock is only used for convenient unlocking. All other security features like app locking and payment are either handled by pin or fingerprint.
So it is secure enough.
CodyMetal but do you have an iPhone and a note cause that's what he compared it too he didn't just see that it worked and say it's great
Could you review the Honor 7x or Mi A1? Even though the OnePlus 5 is considered cheap among the realm of flagship phones, for some people it isn't in their budget.
Mi A1 got it's Oreo update just before New Year. It's lovely.
Linus is not a phone reviewer, he only reviews what stands out, he said its because he uses every phone he reviews for a few weeks.
Mi A1 doesn't have full coverage on North American carriers, so it would be kinda pointless to review for North American audiences.
I personally prefer mi a1 as its got stock android and now already running on oreo
He covers more exciting devices
He showed in one video he gets more views on higher priced stuff.
Could be cool i think xD
Please dont mind my bad english :D
Hi, by "G3" do you mean the LG G3? That's what I have now and I also was interested in the 5t. How has it been serving you so far?
Personally I like fingerprint readers on the back. Because I keep my phone in my front pocket with the screen facing my leg, I can unlock it while taking it out of my pocket.
Or in the power button
I literally got my 5T last night, upgrading from and iPhone 6S. I think your review is spot on, it's a compromise but a pretty good one.
My priorities were (everyone is different): cheap unlocked phone with a headphone jack. The 5T had both of these going for it. I have the same concern as you about the software support, Android is notorious for it's lack of software updates and I hope OnePlus steps up and commits to at least 2y of updates. Fingers crossed.
Overall the battery life is good, the camera is not as great as my brothers pixel 2 but still ok, the screen is great and dash charging is definitely more useful than wireless (although less flashy).
bleubleu81 how on earth is $500 cheap? It’s less, but it’s not cheap
Joseph Harvey For some, 500USD is cheap.
The OnePlus 3 has gone past 2y of updates, so I wouldn't really worry about that.
It's cheap compared to other flagships the 5T competes with.
Joseph Harvey I agree. Phones are so ubiquitous that prices should be much lower than this... But for now "cheap" means "half the price of an iPhone X". :-)
Guys, do you understand how long we've waited for this. People have missed holiday sales and so many deals. It's about time.
OnePlus has never had a sale for the 5T, saying they're selling it at the lowest possible price already.
There're many of another youtubers around here to you listen up
Daniel Schuju but people may have been putting of getting a phone as they waited for Linus' opinion, missing out on sales for lots of other phones.
That's definitely true, I'm just stating facts though.
If OnePlus keeps up like that and adds water resistance in the 6, I already know my follow-up phone to the Galaxy S7!
Philipp Bergamin You should prolly opt for the s9+ unless it cost too much. If you Tryna save then I guess go for it.
What exactly did they screw up? Touchwiz is amazing right now. You're being biased is all.
The OP6 is rumored to have a fingerprint sensor under the screen.
still using it in 2020, and this phone still gets incremental updates unlike samsungs
But Instagram already has support for multiple accounts 🧐
It does but having two versions makes it quicker to switch between them. I use it for my personal and business account far less hassle than having to navigate to the profile screen and switching.
It also works for a few other apps that don't, such as Snapchat and facebook
Karim works for WhatsApp too as it has a dual SIM so for work and personal use
Karim I
but the pixel density increases and

Linus: Speaking aside why don't you buy yourself the dbrand skin
Me: I would like to buy one but my phone is not supported...(I have a c7 Pro)
+xDeedles you cared enough to comment.
C Chan wtf is a c7 pro sounds like a bomb
Dan it's an Asian exclusive Samsung phone in the C series. They are amazing phones, and I would love to see it come to the US.
I'm not sure but i think LTT forgot about the 3 PCS of the negative positive and neutral fan confiurations they set up last year.
I bought a 5T and I couldn't be happier. Charging 700 - 1000 USD is just voluntary robbery
If I can run multiple versions of apps
*Runs 10 versions of the pornhub app*
4:20 can 40FPS be played as slow-mo now?
5T in white is pretty beautiful.
Oneplus 3 has had Oreo since last year....
Chris Lewis It was pulled because of a bug. So it technically still doesn't have Oreo
Dan Cook Wait what bug ? I'm on my OP3 on Oreo right now
Hawx I've had Oreo on the 3T since last year as well and I even received updates.
On old patched nougat firmware, its insecure and basically a custom rom at this point..
Chris Lewis so is op5
Are you guys going to cover the whole meltdown/specter issue? I'm kinda shocked not to see a video about it already up on the site.
Don't agree with the support comment. First the company is constantly adding new functionalities to the OS all the time and both 3 and 3T are already on Android 5 and the 5 and 5T are already starting on the beta program so an early release is expected. Otherwise good review
Pedro Henriques *Android 8
Thanks found u again after a channel name conflict lol bought my stormtrooper suit walked into spoons ordered a pint with a straw and pulled out the white 5T never even got a second look 👍
How do they settle on software, explain that further?! because you just said it settles but with barely any expaination and with giving half its strong points...
I like their software over any others smartphones software, and i guess im really not the only one :P
Your review was a little lacking, not featuring things that already been there for a while now like dashcharge... ok well.
but the Face Unlock that is Faster but not as secure the iPhoneX face id is only considered "just not as good as the iphoneX"...
But I will still name a few for you
1) battery drain baking the main one which remains same or gets worse with each one of their so called "updates"
2) proximity sensor not turning of the screen when making calls
3) android system system standby acting up and draining the battery
And come on man for a phone to go from 4.5 when it released to 4.5.14 should have been enough of a waking call for you to realise that one plus software updates are complete garbage.
Nougat before ran perfectly stable, and it will take a little before oreo runns stable as well
Also oneplus pushes software updates more frequently now than before.
Hey Linus! We wanna see a new office tour video of 2018!!
I'm waiting for the next OnePlus phone, it is such an amazing phone for the price!
You might be getting the fingerprint sensor under the screen then (according to rumours)
I'm still rocking my OnePlus One 64gb and just hooked a coworker up with one...today. No need to replace.
If you want separation between your work and consumer accounts, set up a work profile. It's part of stock Android.

No Intel video yet LTT?
Tune into the Wan show this Friday.
Intel? no, it is AMD and ARM as well.
UrgalWeiser
Intel has more confirmed bugs. But you are right AMD and ARM are affected.
Probably waiting for the Intel damage control money to roll in first.
why only show the low end version in the chart? isn't the bigger memory and 8gb ram worth showing off
Video about special edition white smartphone, slaps brown DBrand skin on.
It's the Stars wars EDITION without star wars logo and theme
Heads up for any students! you can get the 5T for 450$ using their discounts! If this is not an amazing deal then i don't know what is. Both me and my girlfriend got the phone and love it.
Damn. No water resistance? I was hoping to take my phone swimming with me.
when are yall doing a video on all the CPU drama going on right now???
It is pretty recent. Better to get all the factsa first
There are plenty of channels who have covered it with plenty of facts and benchmarks.
not enough. they all talking only about intel, which is innacurate
Not sure if they'll do a standalone video but I'm sure they'll talk about it on the WAN show at least
whats the drama?
Are you gonna make a video over Meltdown and Spectre?
*Caucasian
Tom5tom Entertainment _TRIGGERED_

Xiaomi Mi A1 some day ?
Hello Bonjour v20 is better for around same price even g5s plus is better
If compare to g5s plus ,I will get A1 because it have TYPE C connector
Hey Linus, Should I buy this, the iPhone X or the Pixel 2 XL??
5:48 when I'm on my PC i listen to music from it and not from my phone
Yonatan Avhar When I'm on my PC, I still use my phone to listen to music.
No cellphone speaker would give me the same quality sound I get from my headphones or computer speakers
What's wrong at 5:20 with numbers on camera lens at right of the screen?
When you show the specs you should mind that the white version only comes in the 8/128 version and not in the 6/64
Yep, Linus didn't do his homework
Friend: Which PC case did you get?
Me: Be Quiet!
Face unlock on the 5T is the fastest on the market now !!! Iphone X does not even come close!
thats because it doesnt work in all conditions and isnt secure
facial recognition on all phones is shit, even the iphone x malfunctioned on its demo
Sound quality is worse, but mainly I'm not going to add yet another device that I need to charge.
You're. And no I'm not that kind of guy, just helping you be more professional😀
Michael Schubert you’re*
what about beats x
tbh, at this point, my next phone's probably going to be an OP again, not because of the price/performance, but because of things like the notification switch, the intuitive OS, and ability to root and change roms without voiding warranty. Well unless they remove the headphone jack , at that point i guess i'll just search for something else...
Get the black one. It runs faster ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Wtf
Racist but, I understand that some might find it amusing
melon1168 hell yeah
Hello, where would you recommend is the best place to get Hard drives from? Best price/selection?
Is it possible to say anything good about the color white without sounding super racist?
Proud to be white boiiii
White people are usually not the first to whip that card out
read above!!
Definitely don't drop them in water but as long as you quickly try to fix them you will be fine.
wow, uploaded a minute ago... I'm early
With the multiple app thing, you can do that with an easy app called app cloner it's very useful and nice! (The app icon looks like a DNA strand with a blue background) I use it all the time. Yes it's not a built in feature in stock Android but you can still do it!
hey that colour is racist
No, it's OK to be white.
no you are
aryan racism
It looks nothing like an IPX . . .
GyroCannon OnePlus very clearly took industrial design cues from other devices.
Insinuating that OnePlus doesn’t copy just because phones are flat with rounded corners and a glass panel is ignorant.
That’s like saying a Lamborghini is the same thing as a Kia because they both have 4 wheels, car seats, and a windshield.
what the hell are you talking about? the original one came out way before the v10... LG copied oneplus...
I'm not going to say anything about the OP1, OP2, or OPX, but OP3/3t and OP5/5t are pretty much copies. With OP5 being the biggest offender.
For a phone with a premium build, decent dual cameras, quick and trim OS with no baggage, great battery, fingerprint sensor AND the flagship snapdragon CPU it's a complete bargain.
will the dbrand skin stick on the sandstone texture of the white model?
You could’ve brushed over the Dash charging a little. Fasting charging around and is vastly overlooked.
I would really like to see a focus on reviewing phone's front-facing cameras, a good front facing camera is a hugely underrated feature as for most people this is actually the main camera
Wait, the sandstone white version only comes in the 8gb/128gb config right?
yes no option for 64gb and 6gb ram
The OnePlus 3 and 3T already have Oreo, it came out on November 24th.
At least the one thing OnePlus didn't settle for is the 3.5mm jack, which remains on the phone. Good move on their part as USB-C dongles included by manufacturers sometimes don't include the locking pins in the plug, leading to the dongle eventually wigging out due to loosening over time (basically, there's a small click when you plug something into a USB-C port and some USB-C dongles don't have those pins so they just slide in)
When are you going to review the dark base 700?
is the sandstone not available in canada? I can't find it on the website
