  • A former ballerina and model stands accused of murdering her husband in her Florida home in September 2020. Ashley Benefield claims she shot her husband, Doug Benefield, in self-defense after he attacked her. Leading up to Doug’s death, the marriage was filled with disorder as Ashley claimed her husband was abusive and tried to poison her. The former dancer faces a second-degree murder chase in Doug’s death as she pushes the stand-your-ground narrative. The Law&Crime Network’s Jesse Weber breaks down the story so far with Jules Epstein, a criminal law and evidence professor at Temple University Beasley School of Law.

Not to mention she fired FOUR times and TWICE hitting him.
WHY would she have to hit him twice? She absolutely could of stopped shooting after she hit him in the leg and actually run, if apparently she was in fear of her life. Yeah no. She wanted him 100% gone from her and her daughters life. GUILTY.

Or did a selfish narcissistic ballerina merely see a means to aggrandize her dream of her own company thru this husband's business acumen only to see her start up disintegrate and fail, then dream up a plan to "off him"? Or, although there is no evidence to indicate, did this man/husband, a vulnerable narcissist, indeed have a history of domestic violence, that was unknowingly and unreportedly carried out in his first relationship...and now subsequently surfacing in his second relationship??

The daughter said Ashley basically was using her dad the whole time they were together - the man invested in her own ballerina company which failed bc after she got pregnant she stopped showing up at all after they had already contractually singed on several dancers.

I tell you this sounds like the classic gold digger murder. We have a rich newly widowed man in his fifties and here is a twenty something making him feel young again. They marry in two weeks but don’t invite his family. She has him reverse his vasectomy and gets pregnant. Now he is more valuable dead then alive because she will be guaranteed to inherit through her daughter. She messed up not making sure to shoot him in the front not the back.
I’m very curious to watch this one and see what evidence is presented on both sides.

Professor Epstein's law classes must be so interesting. I could listen to him for hours. Thanks for this discussion. Sidebar on the sidebar: I think it is quite difficult for us, human beings, to grasp another's perspective. In this case to understand how a person would feel if their spouse shot a gun in to the ceiling during a fight. I would be terrified and would be afraid for my life from that point forward in the relationship. With that background then, in a separate conflict I imagine it would be difficult to remain capable of truly assessing the threat posed by the spouse and could lead to an exaggerated response to a threat. Regardless of the outcome of this case I can't help thinking it is like so many before it; we cannot be inside the participants' heads, were not at the scene and are ultimately at the mercy of a flawed justice system

The defense's narrative does smell off in a lot of ways. The story she paints about what happened that day, however unlikely, is possible though so the defense is going to have their work cut out for them in trying to make it believable. The claims that have no solid proof are going to be hard to digest coming from her alone, but that proven fact he shot into the roof during an argument is going to speak volumes. I could see a jury potentially siding with her (for some good reasons), but in my view so far I'm very suspicious of her story.
