    Trust me, I’m Texas’ black-out last week, our Big Buddy’s saved us from freezing, totally without power, we remained comfortably warm and safe, inside our living room. Cost was NOT even a remote consideration.

    I have two of these and in my view, they're excellent. The small bottles you've shown have one pound of propane (approx) each. I have the adapter to a 20 pound bottle and it runs about 100 hours per bottle. Very clean heat though there is a mild odor these things generate- not too bad and much better than being cold. When using, crack a window open just a bit if you can. They have a built-in oxygen sensor and they turn off if you tilt them. Had mine for five years or so- strong recommendation for them. Thank you for the vid!

    I have the original standard size Mr. Buddy from way back and still use it in my ice fishing shelter and duck blind. I was always going to get the bulk tank hose and adapter but never did. I do have an adapter to refill my empty small bottles from a 20 lbs. tank. It saves money. It refills them to about 80% capacity. Hauling a full 20 lbs. tank out on the ice or thru the marsh would be a pain.

    I want one of these as a backup heating source in my greenhouse. If we get a power outage it rarely lasts more than 10-12 hours. This smaller version of a "Mr Heater" is much easier to figure out how to put everything together to get it running than the bigger machine by "Mr Heater". I'll be choosing the 20lb tanks of propane though. I will still use my electric heaters though when we have power.

    Just what I wanted to know. As for me, I plan to use the Big Buddy to heat the concrete garage floor and use one of those round kerosene heater to heat the air. Actually, I plan to first warm up the place with a salamander heater for five or ten minutes THEN use the round heater to keep the air warm and the Big Buddy to keep the concrete warm. I imagine that I wouldn't have to put the Big Buddy on high for more than a few minutes every once in awhile. Medium and Low should be just fine. I'll find out soon as it is now November, 2021 and getting pretty cold here in upstate New York. I gotta get that brake job done on the '65 Galaxie. I've put it off for too long. Always had an excuse. It's too hot (during the summer) or it's too cold (last Fall and Spring).

    • @jamesrogers4674
      @jamesrogers4674 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@arlenechoate3851 20 lb tank is around 5 gallon. It's the standard grill tank you can exchange anywhere. This year it's costing me $10 to fill them, last year was $12. Much cheaper than exchanging.
      The m18 big buddy has a quick connection that you can get a mr heater regulator and hose assembly for around $40 to hook the tank.
      The smaller heater doesn't have the quick connection and I wouldn't recommend it due to not being able to get a regulated hose. You can get a hose that screws into where the 1lb bottle's go for around $20 but you need a $10 filter to use it and not mess up the heater. So it's only a little cheaper and you have a higher pressure rubber hose trying to burst all the time with no regulator at the tank to cut off the gas if it does develop a leak.

    I just used a new Big Buddy at a cabin in Alaska during a 5 night stay. It was -42 blow out side at night and -17 by day. We hooked it up to a 30lb tank with the 4ft hose adapter. It was used to rapidly heat until the wood stove got going well. Some nights we needed to use both. We used about 2/3 s of a tank over 5 nights. We had a CO detector on the wall and a smoke detector on the ceiling. I generally don't sleep with it on but have never had a problem with fumes. We used it on full output most of the time. In the smaller ice fishing hut we only need it on the low setting. I have used it in the back of my truck with a small camper shell as well. Love Big Buddy. I have a Little buddy too. Very reliable and safe if you keep material far from the business end of the thing.

    I use this Mr. Heater Big Buddy Heater to heat a 10'x10' uninsulated Southern New England greenhouse in late fall through early spring for my wintered over greens as well as my spring seedlings. We have 3 40# tanks which I alternate and refill. It works great and over the past 10 years of doing so we've had no problems. I use, however, a fuel filter (item no. F273699), which traps moisture before it enters the heater and blocks it. LP burning produces water vapor so it is important to have this installed. Since Big Buddies are easily repaired and parts replaced by the consumer we've only had to replace the heaters once over the entire 10 years and that was simply due to rusting of the body from greenhouse moisture. Two caveats: 1) In the off season, we either bring in the heater to a protected area as it is full of nooks and crannies where spiders like to hide. In fact, this is why Mr. Heater does not recommend this for heating a greenhouse. However, a through cleaning in fall and spring with alcohol, pipe cleaners and Q-tips will remove all dust and spiders, as well as, survey all parts for potential replacement. 2) FYI, other than the one pound LP cylinders we do not keep the LP tanks indoors. In our case I have a 6' hose through the wall of the greenhouse to the 3 tanks kept outside. The preceding is not a recommendation but only what I've done with my Big Buddy. Use this as well as any gas heaters at your own risk and only after doing your do diligence research.

    I live in a 23 ft. travel trailer in N. Idaho and use the Mr buddy for all my heat. It's February now and while now 12deg f. average temperatures in winter around 35. I use two 100lb tanks at a cost of about 50.00 ea. to fill. One tank will last me 6 - 7 weeks. I generally run on low 14-15 hrs a day, off most of the night except once or twice and when I get up i turn on high for a few minutes to warm up quick. In the back of trailer (small bathroom) I use small elec. heater on low and keep door closed. The elec heat in this small (6×3area) is enough to stop condensation throughout trailer. Great review! I just bought the Mr. Big Buddy heater as a backup heater as we occasionally have power outages where I live. I was even surprised that you got almost 3 and a half hours on the high setting. I would have thought about 2 hours. My house is 2000 square feet and I'm going to purchase another Big Buddy heater. I'm guessing that initially I'd have to run them both on high to warm the house. After that I can run both on a lower setting.

    I have a Little Buddy heater (10,000btu) with no fan. I use a very small desk fan as a blower. I set it about 2 feet behind the unit, about level with the top of the heater aimed slightly up. This helps disperse the warm air around the room much more quickly. Works great and this fan happens to be whisper quiet!

    The blower isn't very strong but it makes a big difference in terms of the time it takes to warm up the portable ice house and the air movement helps keep the inside walls from frosting over. There are some videos out there to convert the 'battery' to a USB connection so you can use a portable power pack to run the blower.

    I use the Big Buddy in living room in winter to keep my oil burner from eating up oil. I use a 20lb. tank with the hose with regulator from Mr. Heater. No problems at all. Medium setting keeps 9000 btu's coming out which is good enough to keep room warm. A 20 lb. tank running around 6 hours a day on medium will last me about a week or so. Small bottles are good for camping, and other portable applications.

    • @stephenvieira4309
      @stephenvieira4309 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A 1400w heater produces about 4700 btu's so its comparable to this big buddy being on low (which isnt going to heat a 3 car garage). If your electric rate is .15 per kilowatt hour then it would cost you around .21 an hour to run a 1400w heater. I would get one of those 30k btu attachments they sell at harbor freight which you affix to the top of a 20lb propane tank. That would work much better for your use case.
      Here is a video to give you an idea of the smaller 15k btu version which might work for your immediate work area:

    Great review. Thanks. I just invested in a 20 lb tank and hose. I have 8 1 lb bottles. The initial cost of everything, including the Mr. Heater Little Buddy, was $182. The 20 lb tank actually contains 15 lbs of propane, but only refilled 13 1 lb bottles. I believe new user error is the problem and expect to get at least 15-16 refills in the future. Refilling should yield an average cost of $1.00 per bottle, or less. It will take about 2+ months for me to recoup my investment. After that it becomes cost effective. The average lifespan of a Mr. Heater is about 1 year, as they have a high failure rate, especially if you hook up the 20 lb tank without using the $25 in-line filter (which I don't have yet). I'm looking into a diesel heater which is much more reliable and cost effective. Maybe next winter ... ?
    I'm a nomad, using 1 bottle per night in cold weather. 120 nights x $3.50 vs 120 nights x $1.00 = $420 vs $120.

      High failure rate? ... I have two of these heaters that run continuously during the cold months and have used them for the last 7 years without a single problem ... maybe your issues are related to user error, not the quality of the heater itself ... I know at least 6 other people who have used these heaters for years without any issues at all ... if you run a filter these heaters run great and last forever

    • @totallyrandomstuffandrevie9609
      @totallyrandomstuffandrevie9609 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Run a low pressure regulater and no failures. Better than a filter because you don't have to replace it every year.

      @@keithanderson8698 That’s exactly what I was going to say! I have the smaller unit, and it just conked out after about 5 yrs. of daily use in the winter. I also use the 20 lb. tank instead of the small 1lb. But, it’s probably because of “user-error!” I didn’t use the filter for only a couple of those years! I believe it would’ve lasted longer had I used the filter.
