      Can you use these indoors?

    • @AlexTimm
      @AlexTimm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@charlesritter6640 Yes, this is the language from Flame King on that: "This heater is safe for indoor use in small recreational enclosures having means for providing combustion air and ventilation, such as enclosed porches, cabins, fishing huts, trailers, tent trailers, tents, truck caps and vans. It may be used for emergency indoor heating when connected to a disposable 1 lb. propane cylinder and for indoor use in commercial enclosures, having means for providing combustion air and ventilation, such as construction trailers or temporary work enclosures."

    • @flamekingco
      @flamekingco 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Alex, great review. Thank you for your attention to detail.
      I think it important to clarify the "indoor use" qualification. That is a question that seems to come up a lot. These heaters are tested and rated to the same standards as the Buddy heaters. If you look at the Buddy Heater manual it states:
      "This heater is safe for indoor use in small recreational enclosures having means for providing combustion air and ventilation, such as enclosed porches, cabins, fishing huts, trailers, tent trailers, tents, truck caps and vans. It may be used for emergency indoor heating when connected to a disposable 1 lb. propane cylinder."
      So I agree that the term "indoor" needs to be qualified for both heaters. But it should be noted, that where ever a Mr Buddy Heater can be used, a Flame King one may be used as well. Thank you for the review and support!

    The quick connect port on these heaters is for hooking up to a regulated gas source. Propane appliances run on very low pressure, and are always regulated from a direct tank source. Propane tanks have 100-300 PSI pressure, and appliances run on less than 1 PSI (11 inches water column). In an RV you can connect direct to it's internal gas system, as it's already regulated.

    I bought the Big Buddy heater and I have a 8 person fishing tent. I'm hoping it puts out enough heat to make it somewhat comfortable. I don't care if it cool in the tent, as long as it's not cold!! Our outside temp is usually hanging around the freezing point or five degrees less!

  • @GeorgeGeorge-yb2sz
    @GeorgeGeorge-yb2sz 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Hi Alex,
    Three things that need clarification:
    FIRST, the Big Buddy heat control is NOT three settings, It can be adjusted between the levels by simply turning the knob up or down. It is NOT thermostatically controlled, thankfully! The more bells & whistles, the more problems when you need it the most!
    SECOND is the fans, totally worthless in my opinion, and especially using D cell batteries that are heavy and expensive. I use heat powered wood stove fans on both of my Big Buddies and they work great. You have to modify the base to fit on the top of the grate, and I built a small hook that holds the fan to the handle. I use two different fans and both were easily adapted.
    Just a note that the tip over switch is also a shut off if the stove receives a sharp blow like accidentally kicking the table or stand it sits on.
    THIRD is the pilot. You mentioned that some of the stoves hide it to keep it out of the wind. If you are using it in that much wind, it isn't going to heat the area anyway, and it makes it hard to clean. After a couple of years, the orifice gets some carbon build up and the flame is degraded. I use a stainless steel tooth brush to clean it.
    I don't know how much propane the Flame King uses, probably about the same as the Big Buddy, except when the thermostat turns it on overnight and tries to keep it at a set temperature.
    I use one of my Big Buddy stoves to heat my shop. I turn the Low setting down until I can hear the flame flicker, then I turn it back up until it stops flickering.
    A thermostat would try to hold the room temperature the same all of the time, and would waste a lot of propane overnight so you would have to turn it off and restart it daily. With mine on low, and regardless of the room temperature it uses the minimum amount of propane day and night and keeps my shop comfortable all of the time. I burn 9 gallons every 7 days running it 24/7 as low as I can set it. I never change it day or night, even when it is below zero.
    My shop is insulated and is a small shop. Nothing has ever frozen inside during the past 7 or 8 years and the temperature has dipped below zero many times. I monitor the temperature from inside my house.
    I use filters and I change them every year and I have never had a problem. I believe my hoses are Big Buddy hose, but I am not sure, I bought them 7 or 8 years ago before the notice came out regarding the hoses degrading and plugging up the heaters.
    I have two heaters because I don't want to be without a working heater, but so far I have never had to use the second heater in my shop. I use it for other things like my dog pen when it is below zero, but both work flawlessly.

    Absolutely fantastic product review! Hope this video goes viral - your local news station should consider you for their Consumer product reviews - you're very articulate and your observations are thorough and interesting. I am not the outdoor type, but I am considering purchasing a few portable heaters for bedrooms in case of winter power outages. I have seen where there are heat sensitive fans that can be placed on the Mr. Heater Buddy Heaters to assist in throwing off heat. Could they be used for the Flame King Portable (especially given its design) or does the built in fan produce sufficient heat dispersion?

    • @AlexTimm
      @AlexTimm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Richard, thank you for your kind words 😀(I hope it goes viral too!) What state do you live in? There were a ton of power outages last winter that caused a huge buying demand on these type of heaters to a point where they were sold out everywhere. So now is definitely a great time to look for one or a couple and picking them up.
      Yes, the heat sensitive fans will work with the flame king portable heaters too! The built in fan seems to only push the heat out a few inches, whereas those bigger fans that you add on would move it several feet out in front of the heater as they are much larger and stronger. Good luck finding the one(s) you want, I'd love to know what you end up with! 👍

      I just noticed that you and some other reviewers liked the way the buddy heater screws in the tank. I was showing my propane dealer this and he says don’t buy a heater with moving connections because they can wear out and cause fires. He says to always use solid non moving connections like the flame king🎉. The flame King should be safer for many years. I have not used a flame king yet, as I have two buddy heaters and have not had trouble with the two bigger ones but have returned one of the smallest round buddy heater and junked a second small buddy heater that sits on top of the tank.

      Interesting, I've not had any issues with those connections and in fact feel it to be better as the ones that don't move like the Flame King I feel like if I try screwing it in and put a bit too much sideways pressure I'm going to break the connection off

    Great review thanks! The flame king [ now BLUU ] is unique that it has a thermostat and goes on and off that is a huge advantage especially if you leave or doze off it's not wasting fuel running and running getting too hot it will shut itself off as needed. Very cool.

    • @AlexTimm
      @AlexTimm  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Interesting, it looks like BLUU is another third party offering the same heaters (both flame king and bluu are manufactured from Martin Industries - yes, they have a yellow version). Unless BLUU acquired Flame King? Yeah the thermostat is nice when used inside a hard sided insulated building. A lot of my viewers use these heaters ice fishing and unfortunately the thermostat isn't super effective in that environment

      @@AlexTimm The one I just bought is BLUU it's identical to one you did the comparison on new name I guess. And yea I bought a CO detector [ or as you pointed out a oxygen depletion detector ] so I won't be relying solely on the heater one.

      Great comparison. I just discovered the flame king yesterday. I already own 2 buddy heaters. The big buddy and the smaller one but when I saw the flame king and read about the thermostat I was wondering if it turned on and off itself. I was really considering getting a flame king just for that reason because I'm not one to fidget with the temp. It's either on or off so a thermostat is a huge bonus. I mainly want the thermostat tho for ice fishing because I've been wanting to do overnights in my flip over hut but now am worried how well the thermostat will work. I don't want to be waking up sweating or freezing. Would love a review of how well the thermostat actually works for similar purposes such as use in a portable ice hut before I justify spending another couple hundred bucks on more fishing gear lol. Thanks again for the comparison

    The 20 pound to 1 pound connection hoses will need a filter, as the stock rubber hoses will emit contaminates that will eventually clog these heaters. Mr. Heater makes special hoses that do not contaminate, so don't need filters. Flame King does not list any filters, but you could use Mr. Heater ones.

      Just seeing this comment now a year later, but I'm curious what kind of space your heating with your portable buddy during that last freeze? I'm trying to figure out if the portable buddy will be enough for my 900sqft apartment, I figured if it gets too cold we'll just live in the bedroom if the power goes out, maybe it will be enough for that. I saw some chatter about it going to freeze over Christmas here in Austin, so I bought the portable buddy today at Walmart for $74. as a just in case the power goes out. I couldn't find the Flex or Big Buddy anywhere I looked today, Home Depot, Walmart, Costco, and Bass Pro Shop. I was going to buy the Flex and the cooking unit, but nobody had them, so I bought the Ozark Trail 2-burner propane stover for $34 at Walmart also, and 6 1lb cannisters. I assume that should be enough for a week of use if needed. Any longer than that, and we'll fly out somewhere warm - if we can.

    I just got one and the ceramic doesn't turn orange until I turn to about 40% on the thermostat, when a burst of flame runs up across the ceramic for a brief second, then the ceramic element is orange.
    Also, my unit has a ziptie that looks to anchor one of the gold metal lines to the bottom grate. Should this be cut?

      Thanks for watching and commenting! I will work on a video of the 10k BTU unit running and when the ceramic pad turns orange and not. It sounds like it didn't need to turn on until you got the dial set to a temperature warmer than the ambient room temp (the dial is actually a thermostat), so it just left the pilot flame on.
      I would leave the zip tie as it is probably around the temperature probe to keep it from swinging around

But this year I'm thinking of putting the cylinder in to have them ready in case the power goes out because I know if the power goes out when it's cold I'll be too nervous to do it for the first time. How long can the canister stay in the mr buddy heater if it's not used? And could I keep it in the house with canister in? Thanks so much! Glad this video popped up again.

    • @AlexTimm
      @AlexTimm  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, good idea to have the canister ready. I keep 1lb tanks in them year round and never had an issue. I suppose if it isn't screwed all the way on there could be a tiny slow leak possible around the threads, but I don't think that would happen (propane they put an additive in to make it smell, so if you smell rotten eggs type of smell you know you likely have a slow leak somewhere. But again, I've never had this issue). Yes you can keep it in the house with the canister in, with the 1lb tanks they are perfectly safe to use indoors with proper cross-ventilation. To get more comfortable with using them (they really are easy to use and not intimidating at all once you use them!), I would on a chilly day just start it up and put next to you when working outside, in the garage or something like that to get a feel for the knobs, how hot it gets, etc. (know that if outside the wind will take away a lot of the heat of course haha). Good luck and smart to be prepared!

      You are right, the small one I have also tested in that scenario (haven't gotten a chance to use them too much yet, but only a few weeks away now from using them all the time!), and noticed the same thing. No, that is old language that Flame King is currently working on updating, they all are good for indoor or outdoor use with the proper ventilation. This is straight from Flame King on the top of indoor/outdoor use: "This heater is safe for indoor use in small recreational enclosures having means for providing combustion air and ventilation, such as enclosed porches, cabins, fishing huts, trailers, tent trailers, tents, truck caps and vans. It may be used for emergency indoor heating when connected to a disposable 1 lb. propane cylinder and for indoor use in commercial enclosures, having means for providing combustion air and ventilation, such as construction trailers or temporary work enclosures."

    Can a filter be used with flame king when using 20# tank, especially since it doesn’t have oscillating head?

    • @AlexTimm
      @AlexTimm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it will still fit, just a bit more difficult to put on than the buddy heater

    I like the new designs with tilting and thermostats. But neither of the Mr Heater competitors are made in USA. Hopefully team red improves their designs in the coming years. Or at least makes premium versions of the large models with these improvements.
    Great presentation by the way, much better than all the other heater vids I found. If you have more passions, consider more device categories.

    Could you compare these heaters as well as the dewalt heater as well?

      I don't have the Dewalt heater right now to do a comparison, but if I get my hands on one I for sure will.

      And I keep seeing where they say if you hook up a 20 lbs tank, to put the tank outside, but I’m confused how to get the hose inside then without leaving the door open which would let more cold air in if you’re using it in a house. Any thoughts/tips on that?

    How do you know what size quick connect to get for the 20,000 BTU Flame King heater ?
    Asking because I Ordered a BIG Flame King and never have hooked up a quick connect to a propane heater So want to make sure I get the right one.

      Same one as the Big Buddy, here is a link to the one with the regulator already attached: amzn.to/3moGj4Q

    Does the Flame King need a special hose or a filter like BB?

    • @AlexTimm
      @AlexTimm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, it should be treated the same way, either a hose that is resistant to the pressure of the propane, a regulator on the tank side of the hose, or a fuel filter on the end of the hose. Either will work

    Do you know why only 20 lb? I have been using 30 lb on the porch outside and feed the tube though a hole.

    • @AlexTimm

      I believe back when they made that as the max size it was a cap on what classified as being portable. There really isn't a reason larger tanks wouldn't be compatible outside of not being classified as portable from my understanding

    *At **6:20** you demonstrated the first improved feature over the buddy. As to price and availability the Big Buddy is currently out of production in a supply chain issue, I have Retail leftovers and I have been selling them all day long at $184.99 Plus shipping. Flame King is $159.99 on Amazon and is in supply. Now the big difference, the Canadian made Big Buddy are ONLY for outdoor use, as is Flame King. The US spec Big Buddy is INDOOR SAFE. Depending on your need that is a CRITICAL factor.*

      Gailm, thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, supply issues will continue into this season unfortunately. According to Flame King when I reached out, they confirmed that their 2 heaters are indoor safe. Now, I don't know if they have a special Canada version that I just haven't seen that is maybe only for outdoors, but for us here in the US, we are good.

    • @loboheeler
      @loboheeler 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no physical difference between the US and Canada versions, just the use point certifications. Massachusetts is also restricted. As far as supply chain problems, that applies to many products and not getting any better.

      @@AlexTimm If Flame King says they are good indoors, they need to change their Amazon Listing which says FOR OUTDOOR USE ONLY. As to the difference between the US and Canada Version (CA has its own cert standards) it has to do with the Oxygen sensor, which if you check the part number is different.

    • @AlexTimm
      @AlexTimm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On the Amazon listing it shows in the title and additional detail it is indoor and outdoor safe for me. Is it showing different for you? (Are you in Canada by chance? )
