If you put 3-4 big strips of wax paper over-hanging your serving plate,then place the first cake layer, any drips, smears, crumbs etc from the frosting process will be on the wax paper strips and can be pulled away at the end for a spotless serving plate

I made this cake … delicious. The frosting was 3T tequila, added to buttercream. Lime zest for garnish, and sprinkle of salt around the circumference. Margarita Cake 😘

Looks good, will try it. Here's a suggestion... Please watch chef Jean Pierre, and learn the proper way to use a zester. The tool on TOP so you can see where you are on the lime or lemon. The channel on the tool is designed to hold the zest, and then you avoid getting the white pith. You definitely are getting too much pith, and it will add bitterness. Of course, it seems many of the TV chefs are not schooled on how to use kitchen tools either. This is one of the best and most useful lessons Chef Jean Pierre has taught me, including mis en place....
It really depends on the cake. It could a little bit sturdier because it's a bit more dense, but I use different methods depending on the cake and desired outcome. :)

Have you tried this with cake flour? I'm always wanting to use cake flour more and hope it would give this cake a lighter texture.
I have not tried it with cake flour, but it could work. My preference here is the all purpose flour. 😊

Can you use 9 inch pans? I don't have 3 8 inch ones.
9 inch pans will work. Your cakes will be a little bit thinner and need a couple of minutes less in the oven. 😊
It is a wonderful cake but the amount of sugar is way too high. If you reduce the sugar will the result be the same? Just asking.
The cake won’t be as soft and moist if you reduce the sugar.
